Liveblog: Wakfu Season 2 (episodes 13-16)
Episode 13 - The Night of the Thirsters
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Proof Amalia and Joris are not close friends number 829342345: if she knew the alcohol he drinks and what he considers "a clean environment to live in" she'd get scared.
Tumblr media
WoT twitter would kill Amalia.
Tumblr media
I know it's more likely that both alcoholic and non-alcoholic bamboo milk exists, but the thought of everyone being a-ok with Yugo underage drinking makes me giggle for some reason. Ruel would fucking do that.
Tumblr media
Are your villains 1. indestructible, 2. want to consume something that could theoretically fix them, 3. in the process, inflict a fate worse than death upon their victim, who 4. becomes one of them?
...Necromes were a missed opportunity. Shoulda called them Wakfu Thirsters instead.
Episode 14 - The Voice Thief
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's always sad to see the way the world has been devastated by Ogrest's Chaos.
Tumblr media
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...This says:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her singing is so cute!
She is now fully bamboo milk-pilled. GOOD.
Tumblr media
New Krosmoz music lore: We already know that vinyls and their players exist, as well as the fact that rock music exists (due to the fact that The Blues of a Hypermage (parody of the IRL song The Blues of a Buisinessman) exists).
Now we have the confirmation that metal bands are real.
Tumblr media
Also, electric guitars are also real.
Tumblr media
Mics are also real. (I am totally not noting all of this down because I want to write a "Joris, Kerubim, and Atcham go to karaoke" scene in one of my fics in the future, nuh-uh...)
Hummina hummina hummina bazooooooooing! eyes pop out AROOOOOOOOGA! jaw drops tongue rolls out WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF.
Tumblr media
It's very rare to see, within the show, characters who differ from their usual class skin and hair colours, which is a shame. (I am 99% sure this is an iop due to his clothes and his hair pointing upwards)
Tumblr media
Text behind Eva: rien ne sert de payer il faut en fuir / there is no point in paying, you have to run away
Text behind Amalia is too shielded to transcribe fully.
Tumblr media
This is written in Brakmarian. It says:
Tumblr media
This means that, metal music is stereotypically a Brakmarian form of music (big news: spoon found in kitchen)
Tumblr media
I usually don't point this sort of stuff out but, man, this tavern is really well off. Not only is there a lot of food, there are also huge hot baths...
Also, once again, canalization and running water are real in this setting.
Tumblr media
I choose to believe that this bubble thing is the Krosmoz equivalent of vaping because it's funny.
[blushing] Would!
Tumblr media
Jpop is real in this setting, and someday, I will be able to prove to you, that Joris is a fan of it, using some proof besides "well ecaflips are kind of japanese-coded sometimes" and "it just makes sense."
Tumblr media
Good rooms in taverns like these not only have hot baths but also fruit, candles, and drinks... [starts writing down "Joris, Kerubim and Atcham go to an expensive tavern and start talking about some convoluted topic, with vivid descriptions of delicious fruit-eating, how good the wine is, and how soft the bubbles in the bath are" in my fic self-indulgent scene ideas document. I can live my vacation fantasies vicariously through those three men]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course metal music from Brakmar is about the fact that the apocalypse caused inflation and that it's Good.
Tumblr media
This says:

Episode 15 - Wabbit Island
Tumblr media
Hhh she is a very good artist.
Tumblr media
[guy who is insane voice] This means that if I ever want to use the expression "canary in a coalmine" in a fic it'll be "tofu in a coalmine" instead.
Tumblr media
The word Sayonara exists in Krosmoz which implies that some sort of fantasy Japanese is real. Big win.
Episode 16 - The Cursed Fountain
Tumblr media
:(
Tumblr media
While I usually talk a lot about character parallels between Yugo and Joris (these men who had to grow up far too fast will someday commit acts which no human being can be forgiven for in the name of goodness—-) there is a lot to be said about parallels betwen Eva and Joris.
They're both artistic, kind people who try to appear logic-driven (and sadly, they are both basically the wranglers/babysitters of their entire adventuring groups).

Demon Slayer Sound Headcannons
Recently, someone asked me about my writing and how I describe sounds from Zenitsu's POV, and it really got me thinking about how every character's "sound" is, so here you go:
Tanjirou- like a small creek trickling over rounded riverstones. As his emotions get stronger, it sounds like the creek gets bigger, like it is leading towards a waterfall.
Inosuke- a sound of drums and hoofbeats. An occassional rockslide. When he is excited, the sound gets faster. It is a very adventurous rhythm made completely of percussion
Zenitsu- he really flips a lot from the sounds of a monsoon to that of light rain. The storm is accompanied by pizzicato strings that echo in contrast to the wind and the rain
Kanao- for a very long time she sounds almost completely silent. There is an empty sort of echo to it that gives the allussion of sound when there is nothing. As the story progresses, she begins to sound more like wind in high grass, and the echoing nature of her sound fades away
Genya- quiet but convoluted woodwind ensemble. Usually the oboe or bassoon take the lead, but in his softer and more vulnerable moments, the flute and piccolo pick up the melody
Aoi- piano accompanied by a violin melody. They turn to a minor key when she is feeling self-concious. The melody is very sweet and light, but the piano can become heavier on the low notes when she gets annoyed
Giyuu- a soft waltz, very echo-y, the flutter of tree-leaves
Shinobu- those tiny metal windchimes, with a faint background sound like the scratching of nails on glass
Sanemi- okay, so you've heard Ride of the Valkyries, right? It sounds like the begining of that song, but the woodwinds and strings messing around and swooping in the back are louder
Muichiro- wind rattling the branches of dead trees. It isnt the kind that scared you as a kid, but a softer kind that sounds like autumn.
Mitsuri- bamboo windchimes, the purring of a cat, a joyful marimba tune
Obanai- a soft flute tone that doesn't really change much. It goes well with Mitsuri’s sound
Himejima- there are fountains found in some Japanese gardens called shishi-odoshi. They are made to keep deer away from the garden by filling up a bamboo pipe with water until it tips over and moves back up, making a clack sound against the rocks
Tengen- the burning of a candle, a choir, cymbals and fireworks. A very flashy sound
Rengoku- very loud organ and trumpet music. Almost obnoxiously loud at times. It sounds like the triumphant music that plays in video games when you win a battle. A campfire crackles in the back
Nezuko- like a campfire, crickets, and the lower notes of a cello. As a demon there is an added sound like the faint high-pitched tremolo of an out-of-tune note that clashes with the rest of her sound.
I think demon's sounds are closer to how they sounded as a human the more they remember/are in touch with their human lives, but there will always be a note that clashes with the rest. Sometimes it almost drowns out the "human" sound. Most demons, however, have a completely discordant sound

META   + dreams (Chrome)
Tumblr media
Chrome has a different dreamscape for each of the Guardians of the Vongola.  Yamamoto’s is an empty baseball stadium during Golden Week.  It drizzles in the dreamscape.  Gokudera’s is a concert hall and library of various music pieces.  It is covered by a storm.  For Lambo, it is the day when he left the Bovino family in Italy for Japan.  Chrome appears with Lambo in the car while it is thundering out.  For Ryohei, it is an empty boxing ring with sunlight pouring in through the skylights.  Mukuro’s dreamscape is usually the meadow or an art gallery.  Somewhere serene as Mukuro wishes so hard for a peaceful place to rest.  For Hibari, it is one of the side rooms in a traditional Japanese home.  The sky is cloudy and the bamboo fountain is tapping away gently in the garden.  For Tsuna, it’s hard to see his dreamscape.
For Chrome, her dreamscape is the ruins of a structure breaking down.  It represents the car accident Chrome was badly injured.  She wears a white dress while having to navigate the entirety of her dreamscape.  It’s in shambles because she is not sure who she should be.  Nagi or Chrome.  She tries to keep this dreamscape covered in a fog, but Mukuro can pierce through the misty veil.
The dreamscape often shows up reminding Chrome she needs to decide who she is of the two.  She is not sure she could be Chrome always for Mukuro, for as M.M. puts it one day he will abandon Chrome.  As for Nagi, she is not sure she could be Nagi again.  She thinks Nagi is dead.  Her mother and stepfather abandoned her in her time of need.  However, there will be a time when she will integrate the two, and her dreamscape will be complete.  Until that time, she leans on Mukuro both to his detriment and her own.

BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Pre-marriage Todoroki Enji (Part 2)
So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.
Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.
Resources:
Chap. 301 "The Wrong Way to Put Out a Fire, Part 1" (火の不始末前編Hi no Fushimatsu Zenpen) Chap. 31 "The Boy Born with Everything" (全てを持って生まれた男の子 Subete o Motte Umareta Otoko no Ko) Chap. 302 "The Wrong Way to Put Out a Fire, Part 2" (火の不始末後編 Hi no Fushimatsu Kōhen) Chap. 187 "Flaming Roar! vs. Nomu: High-End" (燃えよ轟け!VS 脳無:ハイエンド Moeyo Todoroke! vs. Nōmu: High-End) Chap. 387 "Congealing" (煮凝り 'Nikogori')
Ep. 130 "The Wrong Way to Put Out a Fire" (火の不始末 Hi no Fushimatsu) Ep. 19 "The Boy Born with Everything" (全てを持って生まれた男の子 Subete o Motte Umareta Otoko no Ko) Ep. 88 "His Start" (始まりの Hajimarino)
School Briefs I "Notice from School"
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
As of now we only have two more scenes which depict Enji pre marriage, the first being his 'Miai' with Rei and the second being their first 'date'.
The scene are flashbacks placed while Enji is at the hospital so first let's look at...
THE FULL SEQUENCE AS IT IS IN THE MANGA
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So now let's focus solely on the scene in question and, since it has been transposed in anime version (and the anime added scenes) let's have a...
COMPARISON BETWEEN THE MANGA AND THE ANIME
The anime starts by adding more scenery, we see what could be the Himura house, which is also a traditional Japanese house... though with all the green it has around it seems its garden is a lot bigger than the one of the Todoroki mansion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Actually it might also not be the Himura mansion but some place they have chosen for the meeting but it seems more a traditional Japanese house than anything else and the Himura used to be wealthy so they might still have their old residence and anyway... who knows?
The anime gives us also a close up of the Shishiodoshi (鹿威し literally, "deer-frightening" or "boar-frightening") device or Sōzu (添水 "Adding water") fountain, a bamboo water funtain originally derived by a devices to frighten away animals that pose a threat to agriculture and who's currently part of the visual and aural design of gardens, and are used primarily for their aesthetic value.
Tumblr media
We also see the Soribashi (反り橋 "Arched bridge"), a red arched bridge, over a pond (probably a Koike (鯉池 "koi pond") filled with Koi (鯉) carps, or, more specifically, Nishikigoi (錦鯉 “brocaded carp”) carps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Jiki No.1 no yobigoe takai Endeavor-sama kara o koe kake itadakeru to wa yume ni mo omoi masendeshita! Gyōkō no kiwami ni gozaimasu!!' 「次期No.1の呼び声高いエンデヴァー様からお声掛けいただけるとは夢にも思いませんでした!僥倖の極みにございます!!」 "I never dreamed that I would be approached by Endeavor, who has been hailed as the next No. 1! We are at the height of luck!!"
The anime shows Rei's father bowing to Enji while the dialogue has him calling Endeavor-sama. He uses his Hero name and the -sama (様) suffix which is highly respectful.
Interesting enough, even if Enji is marrying Rei because he doesn't think he can surpass All Might, according to Rei's father there's many people who think he'll do it.
All Might and Endeavor have around 10 years of difference as, during the final fight with All for One All Might says he's more than halfway through 50 while Enji should be 46.
In chap 165 Enji has said at 20 he figured out he couldn't surpass All Might, and we know Touya was born when he was 22 so, considering Touya should have been conceived when he was 21, either he's still 20 or he's just turned 21 and he and Rei will have a fast marriage.
On another side, Rei's father never mention Enji also coming from a prestigious family, just that he's the Number 2 Hero and, possibly, will become the Number 1, which might hint to how Enji didn't come from an equally prestigious family and make a name for himself after he became a Hero.
The anime partially shows us Rei's father's face. In teh manga he's just a black shadow but he gives me the feeling Horikoshi planned him to look different than in the anime.
The anime changes the background a little, in the manga there's a scroll on the wall, in the anime we see white Fusuma (襖) doors, vertical rectangular panels which can slide from side to side (they're often painted with scenery but not in this case).
Also the glass window in the manga is close while in the anime is open.
They are in a Washitsu (和室) room, a Japanese-style room with a Tatami (畳) mat flooring and they're sitting on Zaisu (座椅子) chairs, Japanese chairs with a back and no legs.
Tumblr media
In the garden there's also a Ishi-dōrō (石灯籠 "stone lantern"') lantern, a lantern made of stone in its Yukimi doro (織部灯籠 "Snow-viewing Lantern") variant. The customary placement is at the edge of land and water and the original Japanese character describing this lantern may have meant ”floating light”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anime adds Rei's father turning toward her but doesn't show Rei looking at the side. She's just staring down. As for Enji he seems to frown a little.
The group is drinking tea. In the manga they're probably using normal Chawan (茶碗 "tea bowl") bowls, traditional Japanese bowls used for preparing and drinking tea.
Tumblr media
In the anime though they seem to be using the Chinese Gaiwan (盖碗) bowls, Chinese lidded bowls without a handle, used for the infusion of tea leaves and the consumption of tea, which consists of a bowl, a lid, and a saucer and they are still used by tea connoisseurs all around the world, as a simple piece of teaware that gives the brewer a lot of control over the tea.
Tumblr media
I might be wrong though, maybe they're just Chawan bowls or maybe the Himura are using their best tea set, which happens to be a Chinese one.
The anime then adds exposition from Enji's point of view.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Ichiō, miai to iu katachi o totte wa iruga, koreha "kosei" kon' 一応、見合いという形をとってはいるが、れは"個性"婚 "Just in case, although it was made to look like an arranged marriage meeting, this was a "Quirk" marriage."
'Jishin no "kosei" o yori kyōka shite tsuga seru tame ni haigūsha o erabi, kodomo o uma seru tame no kekkon' 自身の"個性"をより強化して継がせるために配偶者を選び、子どもを産ませる為の結婚 "A marriage to have children in which the spouse is chosen in order to strengthen and pass on one's "Quirk""
'Ore wa nozonda noda. Ore no honō no "kosei" to kōri himura-ke ichizoku no kōri no "kosei" ga majiwareba, All Might o mo koeru Hero ga umidaseru to' 俺は望んだのだ。俺の炎の"個性"と氷叢家一族の氷の"個性"が交われば、オールマイトをも超えるヒーローが生み出せると I wanted it. If my fire "Quirk" and the ice "Quirk" of the Himura family were combined, I could create a hero that would surpass All Might.
'Katsute wa meikadatta Himura-ke mo ima wa aoikitoiki…' かつては名家だった氷叢家も今は青息吐息… "The Himura family, which was once a prestigious family, was now in deep distress…"
'No.2 Hero no chii to meiyo, soshite djisankin meate ni Himura-ke no tōshu wa ore no teian o assari to ukeireta' No.2ヒーローの地位と名誉、そして持参金目当てに氷叢家の当主は俺の提案をあっさりと受け入れた "The head of the Himura family easily accepted my proposal, aiming for the status and prestige of the No. 2 hero, as well as the dowry."
'Kotowaru koto mo dekita hazuda' 断る事もできたハズだ "She could have refused."
'Daga kanojo wa "kosei" kondearu koto mo shōchi no ue de, ie no tame ni ore no tsuma ni naru to iu' だが彼女は"個性"婚である事も承知の上で、家の為に俺の妻になると言う "However, even if she was aware that it was a "Quirk" marriage, and said that she will become my wife for the sake of her family."
So... this exposition remarks it's a Quirk Marriage but they don't quite want to admit it so they make it pass for an arranged marriage. Because if your family sells you off but it's not for the purpose to strenghten your husband's Quirk, it's so much better. -_-
Anyway at the meeting there's just Enji, Rei and the "family head" (当主 'tōshu'), which is generally assumed to be Rei's father (but it could have been her grandfather if he was still alive... or her brother if her father died prematurely).
Generally in arranged marriages, or better in the 'Miai' (見合い, "matchmaking"), the marmatching meetings made to organize arranged marriages there's either a mediator or the parents of the two who're meant to marry. Enji though is alone. We can speculate that Rei's mother (whom we know is alive) is absent because she's preparing more tea or retrieving sweets... but Enji went there alone and we'll never, through the whole story, hear about his mother.
Maybe she died too.
While in the manga the family head only sounds honoured to receive Enji's proposition in the anime he looks at Rei greedily, as if instead than Rei she's saying a stack of bills. I feel bad for Rei.
On a sidenote this clashes a bit with how Shouto presented the whole thing back in the past. Shouto made it look as if they were pressured into agreeing to him marrying Rei...
Tumblr media
...while in the manga they just seem glad he asked to marry her and in the anime they seem delighted to sell her to him.
Also the anime in this scene and the manga in another scene implied Rei could still have refused. She was likely pressured but could still say no, while Shouto paints it as if she and her family had no choice but to sell her off... though it can be a matter of translation.
'Jisseki to kin dake wa aru otokoda… Oyaji wa haha no shinzoku o marumekomi' 「実績と金だけはある男だ... 親父は母の親族を丸め込み」 "He is a man with accomplishments and money. . . My old man won over/seduced/persuaded my mother's relatives"
'Marumekomi' (丸め込み) seems to have a not so positive implication as it's used to imply you manage to talk someone into doing what you want, as if the Himura didn't really want to sell Rei and needed to be persuaded.
Tōya too also seem to imply the Himura were forced into selling Rei...
Tumblr media
'Endeavor wa katsute chikara ni kogarete imashita. 「エンデヴァーはかつて力に焦がれていました」 "Endeavor was once thirsty for power."
'Soshite All Might o koe renai zetsubō kara yori tsuyoi "kosei" o motta ko o tsukuru tame' 「そしてオールマイトを超えれない絶望からより強い"個性"を持った子を作る為」 "And out of despair of not being able to surpass All Might, in order to create a child with a stronger "Quirk"
'Muriyari tsuma o metorimashita' 「無理やり妻を娶りました」 "He took a wife by force"
Tōya uses 'muriyari' (無理やり), which means "Forcibily, against one's will".
In the manga he'll also say (without Rei correcting him)...
Tumblr media
'Obāchan-tachi ga binbō shi tetakara okāsan o uttandaro' 「おばあちゃん達が貧乏してたからお母んを売ったんだろ」 "Grandmother and the others were poor so they sold mother, isn't that it?"
'Okāsan wa sō suru shika nakattandaro' 「お母さんはそうするしかなかったんだろ」 "Mother had no choice but to do that, isn't that it?"
Here it doesn't say his father forced them to sell his mother, but that his grandparents did it because they were poor and insists on how Rei "had no choices" (しかなかった 'shikanakatta')... which Rei doesn't deny with him but will later deny in an inner monologue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'Sentakushi wa kagira rete itakeredo' 選択肢は限られていたけれど "Although my options were limited"
'Erande susunda no wa watashi no ashi de' 選んで進んだのは私の足でーーー "I chose to move forward with my feet."
'Semete sono-sakide wa waratte iyou to' せめてその先では笑っていようと "At least I'll try to smile there"
'Omotte ita no ni...' 思っていたのにーーー… "That's what I was thinking…"
She claims she had limited options but, confirming Enji's words, she still could choose.
I should probably say that the impression I get from Tōya first saying it was Enji who forced Rei to marry against her will (same as Shouto), and then him instead choosing to blame his grandparents for Rei's marriage, with Enji and, more important, Rei, feels like a retcon (and since this chapter already contained a retcon in its magazine version I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case here as well).
Of course we can excuse it with an 'at the time Tōya was still longing for Enji's love and didn't want to blame him too much...' only to remember he was blaming him in that same chapter in his chat with Natsuo so... whatever.
And, in addition to this, there's also the narrator in "School Briefs I: Notice from School" which says Enji "singled out his would-be wife and forced her into a Quirk marriage".
Really, this doesn't make it look like Rei even had the option to refuse... only for chap 301/302 to change the situation having Enji say she could refuse, Rei saying she chose that path for her family's sake and Tōya not blaming anymore his father but his grandparents for that marriage.
So, skipping the old bits as retconned out of the story, honestly the impression I got of the Himura from the scene was they saw this as their golden chance as soon as they were asked out so Enji didn't really have to work on being persuasive. Maybe it's just me, though we'll later learn the Himura were already into organized Quirk marriages... however their own were to strenghten their own Quirk as they tended to marry among distant relatives.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Japan is considered incest only if you marry someone who's a second or a third degree relative so I guess they could safely marry among forth degree relatives.
Rei also will claim she
Anyway really, I doubt Enji had to do much work to persuade the Himura and, if he hadn't shown up, her family would have still likely try to organize her marriage so...
Tumblr media
The anime cuts Enji's pouting face as he and Rei walks around the place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flowers Rei is watching are Gentians.
In the series we see Enji gifting them to Rei in November as she has them during the Second Hero Billboard chart which takes place in November but she also has them during the Paranormal Liberation War which takes place in March.
Tumblr media
Now, we can assume the first kind of Gentians Rei has are likely the ‘gentiana scabra’, a specie of gentian with a blue (青色)/purple color (紫色), also called Japanese Gentian. In Japan their name is Rindō (リンドウ/竜胆) and well, they're basically The Gentian in Japan as when you mean to say just gentian in Japan you say 'Rindō'.
However this comes with a problem. In Japan the ‘gentiana scabra’ blossoms in Autumn, from September to November... so it's fine for Enji to gift them to Rei in November for the Hero Billboard chart... but it would be difficult to do the same in March, before/after the Paranormal Liberation War,
The alternative is that the second gentian we see, the one she's holding in March is actually a 'gentiana zollingeri' or Fude Rindō (フデリンドウ), another gentian typical of Asia which is either white or blue and whose flowering period is Spring, usually from April to May... but the problem is I've heard this gentian is usually quite small so... no idea. For now I'll let the guessing to who knows more about gentians than me.
Tumblr media
Now let's focus a moment on what Rei says...
Tumblr media
'Kono ohana watashi ga suki tte itta no' 「このお花私が好きって言ったの」 "I told him I like/love these flowers"
'?' 「?」 "?"
'Hajimete atta koro tatta ichido' 「初めて会った頃たった一度」 "Only once when we first met"
Actually, the Japanese text in this scene matches more with how we saw it being played out. In the flashback Rei never said they were her favourite flowers and here she confirms she only told him she liked/loved them.
Anyway, according to this scene, this mean they have that walk in which they saw the gentians on their first meeting.
And that's all we know about Enji pre marriage form the manga.

Autumn in a Japanese garden by Yeshaya Dank (hanging on the wall) by Yeshaya Dank Via Flickr: Your strolling through a Japanese garden during the autumn. Gazing across the slow moving stream, many things catch your eye. There is a Japanese maple tree whose leaves are changing colours. A stone lantern and a bonsai tree without leaves. You also see and hear the relaxing sound of water slowly pouring out of a bamboo fountain. Allow yourself to relax and soak in your beautiful surroundings!

Passed Impressions; Threads Sewn with Word and Image
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2 >Tokyo >Helsinki >Lisbon >Waking Life
Tokyo
Japan air flew me like a special guest to Tokyo, a delightful transportation in the air. When I arrived, I had no real idea of how to get around, nor had I any Japanese in the lexicon (if only) - so anything like beer and soba noodles would grasp towards comfort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Call me cringe, but there was something magical about eating Japanese food in Japan. Though I did only had a brief gesture, a taste or morsel if you will, it encouraged a more detailed dive into food there. Hiromi had told me about a miniature car racetrack that they had inside of the airport, but unfortunately it wasn’t open late, so instead I sat on the Haneda observation deck in the rain and watched the planes takeoff. In the gate there were a deluge of people waiting to board to Singapore too, I sat with a family while their kids made up games to play with their temporary terminal friends. “I like to learn but I don’t like school, I like to read but I don’t like books,” one of them riddled. I sipped on a Japanese electrolyte drink and smiled at them as they laughed.
Helsinki
Helsinki is a strange aura, in the airport at least… people at customs are very nice and all have healthy silver blonde hair. I am looking around a while, finally settling at a bar on the observation deck; I talk with the man at the bar, estimating an expensive cocktail about to be billed. Aspiring for a Finnish Vodka martini, and settling for a gin & tonic with Juniper berries, the bartender and I exchange some broken English pleasantries before I sit down and draw.
Lisbon
After about one and a half days of transit, the eventual arrival to destino Lisboa was a relief. I would walk to the bustling metro station conveniently placed 100 metres or so from the airport and try to find myself a ticket. There was a palpable stickiness to the air underground, and feeling the atmosphere inside the train grew a distant unknown. Embarrassingly I had forgotten the PIN number on the debit card I have had for half a decade, which only left me with about €50 until further notice. I would buy anything I could online, guessing items from the images with the websites all in Portuguese… Before I reached the hostel, four men on the street offered to sell me weed and cocaine (sure it was…). Oversharing, I explained that even if I wanted to, I only had €20 in cash to last me for some days and I had no access to other money. Also a heavy bag on my shoulders and way finding eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having passed metrics of time and space now, eaten a yummy tomato and cheese baguette and 2 pastel de nata, and snapped images of old fountains - I was tired. I think I stepped over 20,000 this day and finally made it to the ‘Good Night’ hostel (phew). I listened to the sounds of the accordion on the cobblestone street from the balcony, it felt like a shift in time.
Waking Life
In the morning, I would arrange to meet two people from the meta verse to share a car out to a 6 day festival in the Portuguese countryside (Crato). Miguel from Porto, Harry from Glasgow, and myself found each other at the aeroporto before getting picked up in an Uber, and taken for a loooong drive in context. I think it was about 200km, with 20km of that being unsealed and dust-cloud birthing abaft our bumper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The festival was lush (to put it lightly), and impressed with the natural mounded structures, bamboo assemblage, stage designs, and the lake (c/o mother nature, not WL of course…). There were bridges built, pontoon ferries across the lake (and if you’re lucky, with little chaperone children helpers), nests, treehouses, safe spaces, shade structures, a cinema, and regenerative forests. If one was to dream, i’m sure they would find some common ground with this festival.
Tumblr media
Personally, I spent lots of time reading, swimming, dancing, and listening. Some musical highlights were Donna Leake, ADAB, Cosmo Sofi, Greg Foat, Baba Sissoko & Jean-Philippe Rykiel, Daphni, ALABASTER DEPLUME, Mark Ernestus Ndagga Rhythm Force, Zozo, Palms Trax, Aleksi Perälä, and Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra. The music didn’t stop the whole time, so there was lots that missed too.
Tumblr media
Flying a kite really high next to the music at the Praia stage provided a moment of bliss, watching others get lost in the hypnotic floating in the sky, the wavering dance, it made others smile which made me happy. There was a lot of gentle motion throughout the week; beauty in stillness, and comparative liberation through movement. Learning from each other was another noticeable effort, space being allocated to apuoro - where generous a exchange of lessons culminated around topics of dream and sensation. Specifically I enjoyed learning about reversing and remembering dreams, which has sent me on a path since.
Tumblr media
Another special moment was in approach of the Má Estrela set (contemporary Portuguese experimental jazz{?}). The curiosity was well and truly high in the soundcheck, in fact, only few could distinguish what was going on. I sat next to this man as he rolled some sort of smoke, he was British and we had polite conversation. On my other shoulder was a mademoiselle whom seemed to know about the band upcoming. “I’m not sure if you’ll like it…” she said throwing caution, I said “We’ll see” and we sat alone but together in observation and listening. Experiencing waves of synthesis, saxophone, drone, and erratic drums in very different ways I predict, we tilted our heads with different signatures. The British man could not handle the jazz, and left before the first song would conclude. Following the set, it seemed like there was the world to talk about with my neighbour, so we stayed in each others space together for some moments to unfold our introspections.
Tumblr media
Enjoy the images, and a couple field recordings I snapped along the way of some of the music. I appreciate you reading these memories.

Top 5 Trending Interior Design Styles 2024
As we step into 2024, the world of interior design is brimming with innovative ideas and fresh aesthetics.
Staying updated on the newest design trends is important for making a home that looks modern and welcoming.
This article delves into the top 5 trending interior design styles for 2024, providing inspiration and insights to help you transform your home into a modern masterpiece.
1. Biophilic Design
Biophilic design is all about bringing the outdoors inside, creating a seamless connection between nature and your living spaces. This trend is rooted in the concept that incorporating natural elements into our homes can enhance our well-being and boost our mood.
Key Features of Biophilic Design
Biophilic design emphasizes the use of natural materials, such as wood, stone, and plants. Large windows and skylights are essential for maximizing natural light, while indoor gardens and green walls add a touch of nature to any room. Water features, like small fountains or aquariums, can also enhance the serene atmosphere.
Benefits of Biophilic Design
Incorporating biophilic elements can improve air quality by increasing oxygen levels, reduce stress by providing a calming environment, and enhance creativity by creating a stimulating yet relaxing space. Studies have shown that exposure to nature can have significant psychological and physiological benefits, making biophilic design not just aesthetically pleasing but also health-promoting.
How to Incorporate Biophilic Design
To integrate biophilic design into your home, start by incorporating more plants and natural materials. Use earthy color palettes and opt for furniture made from sustainable resources. Consider adding a green wall or a vertical garden to bring a lush, vibrant feel to your living space. Additionally, think about incorporating water elements such as a small indoor fountain or an aquarium to enhance the natural ambiance.
Tumblr media
Practical Tips for Biophilic Design
Choose plants that are easy to maintain and suitable for indoor environments. Incorporate natural textures through wooden furniture, stone accents, and woven textiles. Utilize large windows or skylights to maximize natural light, and consider using mirrors to reflect light and make the space feel larger and more open. Lastly, don't forget to use natural scents like essential oils to further elevate the biophilic experience.
2. Japandi Style
The Japandi style is a serene fusion of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian practicality. This design movement highlights simplicity, crisp lines, and a clutter-less space, forming a peaceful and visually appealing environment. current design trends.
Tumblr media
Key Features of Japandi Style
Japandi style focuses on neutral color palettes, natural materials, and functional furniture. The combination of Japanese and Scandinavian elements results in a balanced and serene atmosphere. Key features include low-profile furniture, tatami mats, and shoji screens. This style also incorporates elements of wabi-sabi, which celebrates imperfection and transience.
The Philosophy Behind Japandi
Japandi is not just a design style but a philosophy that emphasizes mindfulness and intentional living. It encourages you to live with less but better-quality items, fostering a sense of calm and well-being. This approach to design promotes a connection to nature and an appreciation for craftsmanship and simplicity.
How to Incorporate Japandi Style
To achieve a Japandi look, start with a neutral color scheme and incorporate natural materials like wood and bamboo. Choose simple, functional furniture with clean lines and minimal ornamentation. Keep your space clutter-free and focus on creating a sense of calm and tranquility. Incorporate traditional Japanese elements like sliding doors and floor seating to enhance the cultural blend.
Practical Tips for Japandi Style
Opt for high-quality, sustainable materials that age well over time. Use soft, muted tones like beige, gray, and white to create a soothing backdrop. Add texture with natural fibers like linen, wool, and cotton. Incorporate handcrafted items and art pieces to add a personal touch and celebrate the beauty of imperfection.
