Japanese Post-Hardcore albums
List from top left, clockwise
"あらためまして、はじめまして、ミドリです。" by ミドリ
"ソルファ" by ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION
"ワールドイズユアーズ" by Mass Of The Fermenting Dregs
"Unhappy Refrain" by wowaka
Often called Shimokita-Kei, this is a Japanese-based genre that takes influence from Post-Hardcore, Pop Punk, and even Noise Pop and Power Pop.
Gaining traction in the 90s/2000s, this genre continues to gain popularity over time, even gaining a foreign audience.
In the late 2000s/early 2010s, Shimokita-Kei became popular among people apart of the emo subculture, specifically in the US and Canada.
The mainstream interest seemed to have died down, but there is still a large base of fans today as it continues to dominate the indie scene.

PT.1 - ALBUM RECS [ FRI 20th Dec "24]
Tumblr media
My first album recommendation is “Vespertine” by our lord and saviour Björk. I’ve been a fan of björk for a while now ever since my friends wouldn’t stop recommending her to me last year i’ve been hooked ever since. This album is probably my favourite album of hers with “homogenic” coming 2nd in that respect. i recently bought this album on cd (thinking back i think i bought this cd before joining this site but id not given it a good listen on my player since buying it due to being wayyyy to busy) + gave it another proper sit down listen a couple of weeks ago + i don’t think i will ever find another album that both inspires me + effects me emotionally the way this one does. what an artist.
FFO: Arca, Thom Yorke + Aphex Twin
Favourite songs: “Undo” “Cocoon” “Frosti” “Pagan Poetry” + “its not up to you” (honestly the whole album may as well be here ngl)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My second album rec is “some heavy ocean” by Emma Ruth Rundle. I think the last time i was online here, i mentioned me seeing her live + honestly she was breath taking, i hope to be able to see her again some time soon. This album is tied with another album of hers called “Marked for Death” when it comes to my favourite album of hers, both of them have a place in my heart and explore different sonic realms while still maintaining her sound which i find fucking awesome. great staple artist for all the gothic rock fans out there.
FFO: Chelsea Wolfe, Ethel Cain, Fois Gras + King Woman
Favourite Song: “Run Forever”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Third EP Rec is “Up like a weather balloon” by Flip Top Head. i discovered these guys via a single of theirs called “Alfred Street” which is a fucking banger + in the search for more i discovered this EP. This is record defo for people who enjoy the British “post-punk” scene. these guys are definitely ones to look out for.
FFO: BCNR, Mary in the Junkyard + Do Nothing
Favourite Songs: “I Can’t Wait Till I’m Old” “ Weightlifter” + “Jesse Paints The Houses”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The last EP Rec is “ixtab” by my dead girlfriend. From memory, i found this band via another japanese band called “Kinokoteikoku” + just like i did with that band, i fell in love with this one. This year for some reason ever since finding and listening to “FLat7” + “Midori” I’ve been being fed all of these really fucking cool noise/shoegaze bands from japan + honestly i’m loving it. i need more.
FFO: Kinokoteikoku, Julie, FLat7 + CONDOR44
Favourite Song: “watashi no aishita manatsu no shinigami”

SONG OF THE DAY
Day #24
Today's track is Abnormalize by Japanese indie rock band Ling Tosite Sigure from their 2013 album I’mperfect. Released as a single in 2012, the track was featured in the opening credits for the mature cyber-punk inspired Japanese animated psychological/crime thriller Psycho-Pass. The original Psycho-Pass is one of my favourite animes of all time, and the band has also provided other works for Psycho-Pass’s other shows and films such as 2014’s Enigmatic Feeling. I have adored this song since it first blew my mind as a teenager. It opened me up to how expressive and experimental production, writing, and music composition can truly be. It really was the beginning of the end for me, especially in terms of my foray into darker alt-rock fantasies. The alt-rock/post-hardcore/math-rock track (I don't even know anymore guys) is one of my favourite Japanese alt-rock songs, I also love Japanese math-rock/alt-rock groups Toe and Lite. If you really wanna go down the anime opener spiral however: if you didn't already know the FAMOUS Tokyo Ghoul OP Unravel was performed by Toru Kitajima or TK who is the lead vocalist and Guitarist of Ling Tosite Sigure. This further proves the point that this band's library is worth checking out and Japanese alt-rock, especially math-rock, is worth your time and effort. I'm not gonna even attempt to describe this track, just please give it a go and if it doesn't blow your mind I'll eat my fucking shoe.

Bands
I know one necessarily asked and no one probably cares, but i wanted to list my favorite bands (not in order). Most are metal (folk metal/viking metal, most especially), but some are just general alternative rock, i guess.
Anyways, here they are:
Skáldmöld (iceland)
Fejd (sweden)
Månegarm (sweden)
Blind Guardian (germany)
9mm Parabellum Bullet (japan)
Merry (japan)
Honorable mentions: SuidAkrA (germany), Nightmare (japan), & Meijibray (japan). (i have only ever listened to exactly one song from each of them, but all three are very good songs)
Also. Another honorable mention is The Hu (mongolia). Not one of my favourites, but i think they are cool enough to mention.
When I don't listen to Metal/Alt Rock (since i am definitely not always in the mood), here are others i like:
Tchaikovsky (romantic/"classical")
Antonio Vivaldi (baroque/"classical")
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (classical/baroque/"classical")
Antonín Dvořák (romantic/"classical")
Joshua Messic (folk?/hammered dulcimer*)
Dancing Hammers (folk?/hammered dulcimer)
Victoria Van Arnam (folk?/hammered dulcimer)
*a hammered dulcimer is a string instrument sort of like a sideways harp or a guzheng, and is played by "hammering" it with little mallets.
**also. i cannot stand beethoven. i know he is popular but i can't stand it. there is a reason he was not on the list
***i do not know the moral standing of any of these bands, or if they've done anything problematic or anything. It's been a long time since i've been able to enjoy music, and i don't want to ruin what i have right now, because o don't know how long it will last
