I've been seeing a lot of AEW fans who aren't sure how to watch the upcoming Wrestle Dynasty show, so here's a brief explanation!
Wrestle Kingdom, Wrestle Dynasty, and NJPW's big "mystery card" show New Year Dash are all included with a NJPW World subscription at no additional charge! All you have to do to watch them is subscribe to NJPW World.
A 30-day NJPW World subscription is $9.99 USD. The subscription will allow you to watch shows as they're streaming live, and watch them in the archive after they've aired. It also gives you access to the rest of the videos in the archive.
You can subscribe whenever you want - you'll get 30 days of membership starting when you subscribe. Just be aware that the subscription renews on Japan-time, so if you only want a month, cancel a day early to make sure the time zone difference doesn't get you.
All three shows will have live English language commentary. To change the commentary language on any match, click the gear button on the bottom left corner of the video and select English audio.
The app should default to English. The website is also available in English - If it doesn't default to English for you, just click the button on the upper right corner to switch it to English.
You can subscribe in the app, but I don't know if the app stores add any additional fees, so I'd suggest subscribing on their website to be safe.
Shows taking place in Japan will of course happen on Japan-time, which tends to be late night or early morning in the US.
Wrestle Dynasty is scheduled early to accommodate American viewers - it starts at 1 PM Japan-time, which is 11 pm EST / 8 pm PST. If you want to watch the livestream, I suggest hitting play about 5 minutes before the show is actually scheduled to begin - sometimes the service gets overwhelmed right as big shows start and everyone starts watching all at once.
The other shows air at more standard times in Japan, which means later at night from the US, so if you want to watch them live from the US you'll have to wake up early or stay up late. But you can also just watch the archived shows later.
Wrestle Kingdom is New Japan's biggest show of the year, and absolutely worth watching. It will air on 1/4, the day before Wrestle Dynasty. Each year of NJPW is structured like a season of a TV show, and Wrestle Kingdom is the climax of the different stories from the previous year. You can think of it as the "season finale" for NJPW's 2024 season.
New Year Dash is New Japan's annual "surprise card" show. It will be on 1/6 this year. New Year Dash functions as the first episode of a "new season" of NJPW, by introducing new storylines for the new year. There are always some big surprising events, and it's likely that at least some wrestlers from AEW will show up for it this year.
#aew#wrestle dynasty#wrestle kingdom#Don't be too intimidated to give NJPW a try#It's an incredibly easy promotion for English language fans to follow

2025 First Quarter Goals
This year, I'm switching up the way I make my goals for one very large reason: I'm moving to Japan! Instead of thinking about time in terms of 2024 moving over to 2025, I've been thinking about it more in terms of pre-Japan and in-Japan. However, this works out great since I'll be moving a quarter of the way into the year. Therefore, instead of making goals for the entire year, I have some goals that I want to accomplish before I move to Japan, or first quarter goals for 2025.
Read three Japanese novels. I had a goal last ear to read a Japanese novel each month which I completely bombed. I especially fell off when I started working towards moving abroad, because I wanted to get my physical tbr down fast, which meant I was neglecting my Japanese books even more than usual. I really want to make sure my Japanese is in tip top shape for moving there, which means buckling down and actually reading a novel a month this time.
Complete three TV series in Japanese. This is essentially the same goal as before, but with listening as my focus. Listening has always been my weakest skill and, although it's certainly improved recently, I'd really like to have to expend less effort on listening when I get to Japan. This is also one of the main reasons why I'm attending a language school instead of jumping directly into the senmongakkou that I want to go to afterwards. I also want to focus on series set in the Kansai region, since that's where I'll be.
Complete three levels on my kanji app. No I don't use WaniKani, yes it's because I'm too cheap. Right now, this is the easiest way for me to practice vocabulary and I don't want to let that go to the wayside.
Keep going to my local Japanese language meetup. I think this will be an easy goal to keep, as I haven't been able to go with the holidays recently and I'm missing speaking Japanese! These meetups will be my main way to practice speaking before I get to Japan, and as a mini goal, I'd like to speak more Japanese in these meetings instead of falling back on English.
Keep up with my Chinese. Although this is a significantly less tangible goal than my others, one thing that I found online was that there are a lot of Chinese language/culture meetups in the area of where I'll be in Japan and I'd really like to go to one while I'm there! So, I want to keep chugging away, even if it's a little more slow going than my Japanese progress.
And just because our lives can't revolve around one thing all the time, Finish three crochet projects. It's important to keep up other hobbies and I've been loving crochet recently! Next year, just to make sure I'm still crocheting, I'd like to finish at least one project each month, regardless of how big or small it is. One white whale crochet project I have an idea for is a shogi board blanket. I probably will not get to it this year.
皆さん、明けましておめでとうございます!As we all think about what we accomplished this year and what we want to accomplish next year, remember not to overextend yourself. Humans need variety, so don't beat yourself up if you find yourself attracted to other hobbies and interests- lean into it! Interests ebb and flow and it will come back if it is meant to be.
#i would also like to get back into german seriously and possibly (!?) pick up a new language (WOAH)#but those are less serious goals#and perhaps i will have to wait until im in japan to get to those#langblr#studyblr#language learning#benkyou posting#japanese langblr#日本語#polyglot#japanese

𝐏𝐎𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐅𝐔𝐋| 𝐁𝐚𝐤𝐢 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐗 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫
𝐈𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐧.
Let us forget all the menacing things that Yujiro has done, and give him a sprinkle of humanity. The relationship with him in this is either romantic or platonic, you pick, reader. Cuz idgaf <33 🥰
Life hasn't been that fair to me. They hit me with the worst luck possible and give me a chance, then hitting me again. My father wanted a son, a strong, brave one but he received a daughter. Of course, he disliked that. So, he would force me to do 'boyish stuff' such as: Basketball, football and more 'boyish' activities.
At the age of 20, he forced me to go to the army and train there. He was...proud, swaying pictures at peoples face of me in my uniform, saluting.
After training, i then decided it was enough and wanted to lead my own life, of course my father was upset, but i couldn't care less. At 24, i left the army and moved to Tokyo, Japan.
I was jobless and was staying at an apartment which was small but comfortable and had everything i needed. Japan is a unique country...i would say. '5 death row convicts escaped and are on their way to Tokyo, Japan.' the lady on the TV said, showing pictures and info.
"...Did God send me here to die?" I mumbled and opened my laptop, deciding to look for a job, while listening to the news. Japan is a unique country..they have 'Yujiro Hanma, the strongest and most feared man alive'. "Strongest? Well he definitely looks strong alright." I looked at pictures of the man.
He looked Intimidating, large and muscular. On one of his pictures, he had an ear to ear smile, i blinked. "...he looks like it." I scroll more. "...5 death row convicts...another death row convict...dead person... boxing match gone wrong...death row convict escap- ugh, since when did the world become so messed up!?"
"Yujiro Hanma looking for a... bodyguard? Why would he need a bodyguard...oh." The pay was BIG, so big that i can buy this whole building. Mr. Hanma looks like he could kill. Why would he want a bodyguard anyways?
I hesitate and ponder my decisions for a minute, glancing at the pay every now and then. I groan and slap my cheeks. I need money. And so, i contact the number.
A few seconds passed by. He picked up! "...Hello?" "A woman huh?" Yujiro spoke, amused. "...uhm, yeah. I would like to-" "Do you know how to fight?" "..yes." "You're hired." "O-oh?....Is the pay really for real?" "It's a fair pay. Your are protecting the strongest man in earth."
------
It has been a few months since you have been a bodyguard for The strongest man...creature on earth. It has been... exhausting. This man is literally a child inside a monster like mans body.
I think this man doesn't know what a bodyguard is, because he would make me fold his clothes, buy him food and throwing the money at me, orders me to threaten the president to do whatever.
But, the pay was large and made me live so much better than the time i lived with my father. I could afford more better clothes, food and make my apartment not look like a dump.
I had many experiences with this man, i wonder what his son is like.
-------
I stared at the tracker on my phone, Yujiro has a phone (which he barely use) where i downloaded a tracking app in it. 'Yujiro is in a motel again.' I thought, 'he's probably banging another girl. Damn. How does he even fit?' i shake my head, removing the thought out of my head.
I walk in and used the elevator, making my way on the floor where his room is. 'Room 23...24...25, okay.' i stood there, looking at my phone, gazing at the time.
'11:56' it read. 1...2...3. A woman came running out, crying while struggling to wear her heels. She looked at me for a second and ran away, sobbing.
Yujiro came out, half naked. "Your lunch." I faked a smile, due to my tiredness. "What happened?" I pointed with my thumb to the girl running away.
"She was too noisy. She sounds like a chew toy." He said harshly, taking the paper bag from my hand. "...of course, it's a normal human reaction." I mumbled.
"I'm not eating here, let's go." Yujiro said walking away, leaving the room open. "..sure." I quickly entered the room and saw the woman's earrings, along with a few pieces of jewelry that Yujiro left behind.
"Mr. Hanma isn't that bad after all." I hummed in delight, stealing the shiny jewels.
-------
I sat in my apartments rug, laptop in my lap, with Yujiro doing exercising stuff in the corner, breaking the wooden floor, leaving foot marks on it.
"You have a Gmail? I didn't know.." "Yeah. The government made it for me." He grunts, as he exercised. I made a disgusted sound as sweat rolled off his body. I scrolled through his Gmail "..You don't read your emails." "It's a waste of time."
Looking at the time, I notice that the news is on and reached for the remote, turning the TV on. On the news, the news reporter explained the prisoners who escaped.
I glanced at the man, feeling his murderous aura. His smile, amused. "You going to do something about it?" "Maybe." I hummed in response.
The door bell rang and it caught my attention. I stood up and walked to the door and opened it. "[Y/N]." "Father?" "Come home. Enough with this silly nonsense of yours, you can't live without me, look at this shithole you're living in!"
"...This shit hole, is my home. I'm more happier here than living in yours." I replied, eye twitching in annoyance. He came all the way here just to control you again? He could've asked how you've been doing all these years, like a good father would.
"That is no way of talking to your father! Come. Home. [Y/N], whether you like it or not, You still have my last name." "Fuck your last name!" I pull my hand away from him when he grabbed it, looking at him with disbelief and tears threatening to fall from my eyes.
He was much more stronger. I couldn't run away.
Then, he froze. His face turning into anger to fear, his eyes widening and his hands slowly quivering. He backed away, "W-w-who the fuck are you..?" "Who are you?" A voice from behind me spoke, his voice deep and menacing, almost like he wanted to kill my Father.
I gazed at my back, to see Yujiro. He had his hands crossed, with an eating-shitting grin. I can feel his aura, an aura that can kill. His eyes looked like it was glowing, his grin getting wider, more threatening.
My father was a soldier too, he was pretty strong, a large man with muscles, littered with scars all over his body. He scared people with his looks. But this time, he was scared. Maybe scared isn't the right word. Petrified, he was petrified.
Even if they were the same height, it was obvious whos much more stronger. "F-fuck." He backed away like a scared puppy and ran. "Such a shame. He ran away already." He said amused, keeping his grin.
"Pussy." He said, walking away while scratching the inside of his ear with his pinky. I blinked. Did he just.. protect me from my father?

The beginner's guide to the Pretty Series
With the recent announcement of the new Pretty Series installment titled Himitsu no AiPri, it's about time the Pretty Series returned after over a year since the Waccha PriMagi! series finale. In celebration of the newest installment, let's take a quick history lesson about the Pretty series.
The Pretty Rhythm Saga (2010-2014) - The Pretty Series saga began on July 15, 2010 with the arcade game titled Pretty Rhythm Mini Skirt. Made by Takara Tomy and developer SynSophia, this arcade game pits players in the role of Prism Stars, performing Prism Jumps, and collecting Prism Stones.
While the one that started it all made a slow start, the folks from Takara Tomy wanted to do more with the Pretty Rhythm saga, and with that, a TV anime titled Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream was made. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 9, 2011, for 51 episodes, this anime is the fruit of Japan-Korea collaboration thanks to Japan's Tatsunoko Production and South Korea's Dong Woo Animation. The TV anime is all about Aira, Rizumu, and Mion in their quest to take on the prestigious Prism Queen Cup.
As Aira Harune's journey to become Prism Queen is completed, Mia Ageha takes the baton as the star of the next Pretty Rhythm story; Dear My Future. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 7, 2012, for 51 episodes, Dear My Future centers on the rivalry between Prizmmy☆ and the K-Pop group PURETTY. Believe it or not, there are real-life versions of the groups as seen in the anime. There's even a live-action segment featuring Prizmmy☆ as well.
As Mia Ageha's road to Grateful Symphonia is well and truly over, Naru Ayase steps to the spotlight in the third and final chapter of the Pretty Rhythm saga, titled Rainbow Live. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 6, 2013, it features an original storyline unlike the previous two. It's about Naru, An, and Ito, who are working together at the Prism Stone Shop while trying to take good care of a mysterious girl named Rinne.
Although the Pretty Rhythm saga ended, the story continues with the KING OF PRISM spinoff films featuring male characters from the Pretty Rhythm saga. They even got a 2019 anime show as well showcasing the rise of the boys who would be Septentrion.
The PriPara saga (2014-2018, 2021~) After the end of the Pretty Rhythm saga, the folks of Takara Tomy prepped up what it seems to be the second generation of the Pretty series. It's called PriPara and it aired on TV Tokyo in the Summer of 2014 and lasted for three seasons, four if you count Idol Time PriPara of course. This anime series centers on the life and times of Laala Manaka, a little girl who wants to be the best PriPara idol. Together with Mirei Minami and Sophy Hojo, they became SoLaMi Smile and they fought their way against the best idol teams of PriPara, especially Dressing Pafe consisting of Dorothy, Reona, and Sion, Tricolore, and Gaarmageddon, among many others. PriPara is a huge win for the people behind it and such success prompted the show to spawn four movies and outrageous merchandising rights.
In the spring of 2017, the next chapter of PriPara begins with three new main characters penning the final pages of this saga. Titled Idol Time PriPara, it's all about Yui Yumekawa, whose fateful encounter with Laala Manaka changed everything following an accident. With Nino Nijiiro and Michiru Kouda joining alongside, the MY☆DREAM trio made the best closure to this saga.
Although the PriPara TV series is finished, the story continues with Idol Land PriPara. First announced in December 2020, it was originally slated to be released in the spring of 2021 until it became subject to long gestation and delayed launch dates. It was released on August 17, 2023. It is the second official PriPara app game after the defunct PriPuz puzzle app game. This app game also features an original anime series set moments after the events of Idol Time PriPara. It introduces new characters such as Amari Katasumi, Mario, and Pololo, among others.
The Kiratto PriChan years (2018-2021) - Aired in TV Tokyo since April 2018 for three seasons, Kiratto PriChan is set in a world where fame comes from social media just like in the real world. It's about a group of girls who called themselves the Miracle☆Kiratts who are striving to become the best PriChan idols above the rest. For three seasons, we watched Miracle Kiratts taking on big challenges such as heated competition with rival teams such as Meltic StAr and Ring Marry, the jewel idol competition, saving the world, the road to the Queens Grand Prix, and saving the world...again, while they do what they do best; showcasing the world that they're the best PriChan sensations ever known.
PriMagi (2021-2022) - Waccha PriMagi! is the fourth installment of the Pretty Series that revolves around the lives of Primagistas striving to become the best of the best. The show is about Matsuri Hibino, a middle-schooler who dreams of being the best just like her idol, the legendary Jennifer Sumire Sol.
AiPri - After over a year of void, the Pretty Series has returned with the newest installment coming to TV Tokyo this April 2024. Titled Himitsu no AiPri, the new series stars Minori Fujidera as Himari Aozora and Sae Hiratsuka as Mitsuki Hoshikawa. For the first time in Pretty Series, the animation sequences were provided by OLM, the studio behind the Pokemon and Yo-Kai Watch anime series, while South Korea's Dongwoo A&E returned to cooperate for it.
Welcome back, Pretty Series! The world can't wait for the franchise's comeback show this April.

Q&A:
How do you sign up/access sites that require JP address and phone number? A: I sign up to Tenso and use the address and number they provide. Most JP sites I've used accepts the address and phone number Tenso provides. None of the sites I've mentioned above require any sort of code to be sent to your Tenso phone number
How do you pay for the services that require JP bank accounts? A: I do not have any jp bank account and have only used my local (asean) bank account. I just pick a card and pray it's accepted by the payment site
Which site do you recommend the most for international fans? A: CL. Other than the fact that the contents are subbed, it is also the platform where you can openly post in other languages (not Japanese) whether in replies or live chats. I really encourage getting the Premium subscription to show LDH how international fans are supporting them.
What is the difference between Official Fan Club contents VS mobile sites? A: Mobile sites main contents are blog posts that are updated by members themselves so the contents mainly focus on individual members (good for people who are only fans of specific members of a group). Mobile site contents are also less formal (pictures/videos are not edited professionally). FC are mainly group-centered contents and the quantities are not as many as those that are posted in mobile sites. But no same contents are posted in both site. ※ Personal note: Mobile sites is worth your money more compared to FC
END. Thank for checking this out and feel free to hit me up if you have any questions regarding these services/sites as I've had a chance to use most of them
(e.g: I can answer questions such as how to sign up to site A, what kind of contents members A, B, C post in their blog or how regularly they post blogs, or which VPN do I use when using site A or B. Unfortunately I can't help with any question regarding payment)
Let's try to support our boys where we can :) 👍

[INFO] TVer: An Official Streaming Site
TVer is a free-to-watch official streaming site that offers archive streams for shows that are broadcast on television in Japan. While it doesn't offer streams of all the shows, it does offer streams for a good number of them.
Shows are usually made available on TVer right after their broadcast on television, and stay up on the site for about a week. During the time it is up, viewers can watch a show as many times as they like.
WHY USE TVER?
It is official, free-to-watch, and easily accessible online (with VPN). Shows are also available to watch at any time that is convenient to the user, which is an advantage for international fans who live in different time zones.
Speaking of the advantage for international fans, TVer also gives international fans the ability to contribute to the ratings of shows they like.
Viewership ratings of shows is one of the more important measurements of performances that has an impact on, not only the production staff, but also the actors and actresses in a show.
Previously, ratings were mostly taken from television broadcasts in Japan, but due to the shift in the viewing habits of the audience in recent years, official online streaming sites, like TVer, are now taken into consideration when it comes to ratings. As an example, in 2021, it was revealed that ratings on TVer is taken into account in the payment of actors and actresses as well as an indication of a show's audience reception and popularity.
These ratings are especially important for smaller shows that do not get good ratings during their television broadcasts for various reasons, such as the time a show is aired, and allow them to compete with bigger shows that are more heavily advertised.
RATINGS ON TVER
Ratings on TVer can be measured in several ways.
1. Viewership Ranking
Viewership rankings are denoted by the word "ランキング" on TVer's main homepage. Shows are divided into various categories for these rankings: TV drama, variety, anime/hero, news/documentary, and overall ranking.
Rankings are updated daily, and measure the number of a times a show is watched every day.
2. Number of Likes
Likes are denoted by a button with a thumb on it. Every time a new episode of a show is made available, the Like counter restarts. To Like a show, just click on the Like button.
This rating is especially important for shows with guests appearances, like variety shows, and is used to measure how well-received individual episodes of the show are.
3. Subscription / Bookmarks
The number of subscribers and bookmarks a show has is indicated by the number beside the words "お気に入り数". This acts similarly to the Like button, except that it applies to the whole show instead of individual episodes.
Subscribing or bookmarking a show can be done by clicking the button that says "❤ お気に入り登録". After clicking on the button, the words "❤ 登録済み" will appear. To see the shows that you have subscribed to or bookmarked, click on the word "マイページ" at the top of the page, and it will bring you to your page where all the shows you have subscribed to or bookmarked will be displayed.
This rating is used to measure the interest of viewers in a show.
HOW TO USE TVER
1. Switch your VPN on. Then, click on this link: HERE
NOTE: For anyone who is using TVer on their mobile phones, ensure that your VPN is switched on when downloading the app.
2. First time users might encounter a pop-up survey.
生年月: Fill in the year and month of your birth (ie: 199906)
性別 (Gender): The four options given (in order) are "male", "female", "other" and "don't want to answer"
郵便番号 (Postcode): Postcodes for different areas in Japan can be found online through Google.
After all the answers have been filled in, click the button that says "回答する".
NOTE: If the page does not reload after you have clicked on the "回答する" button, just refresh the page.
3. Look for the word "さがす", which is usually located at the top of the page. Clicking on it will bring you to the search page.
NOTE: If you have subscribed or bookmarked a show, click on the word "マイページ" at the top of the page.
4. In the blank under the words "番組タイトル・出演者で検索", fill in the title of the show you are searching for. Remember to use the Japanese title (ie. 仮面ライダーギーツ). Click enter, and it will bring you to a page which displays all the episodes that are currently available to watch on TVer.
5. Click on the episode you want to watch.
I hope that this is helpful for anyone who is interested in giving TVer a try, and if anyone has further questions on how to access the site, please feel free to contact me by dropping me a PM here on Tumblr or a DM over on Twitter @EvansLils.

Media Favorites of 2023
Who can't believe that 2023 is nearly over? *raises hand* As the year winds down, this seems like the time to reflect on the things that helped us or brought us joy. The following is a list (not exhaustive) of my favorite apps, books, music, TV, and video games from the last year, including many that I would recommend to others. You can find my list from 2021 here. (I missed compiling this list in 2022, in no small part because I was sampling eastern Germany’s best Christmas Markets all through December.)
Apps
Airalo. My new go-to for international data, but you’ll need an unlocked phone. I was able to save a ton of money by setting up a second e-SIM to access Japanese mobile data networks. (It cost $10 for 10GB of data across 30 days, which was plenty for the week I spent there, and much cheaper compared to my phone plan’s offerings.) I wish I’d heard of this before my trips to England and Europe this year, but I was able to try it out in Japan successfully. I’ll definitely be making use of this app when traveling in the future. The only downside is that I can’t have both e-sims active, so I had to restart my phone in order to check my text messages. Luckily, most communication is done over apps these days instead of SMS, so I wasn’t missing much.
Reverso. This app pulled more than its weight for me while I was traveling abroad this summer. The thing I liked most about it is how it pulls up example sentences so you can help see the context and usage of a given word. It also saves your searches for you, so if you were a more disciplined language student than me, you could write down any new vocabulary in a notebook to study later. Also, it’s free and works fairly well offline, and it’s able to handle multiple languages in the same app.
Vivino. When in France, drink as the French do, I suppose. But when you’re at the supermarket trying to decide between the many, many wines available for less than 10€, this app helps to narrow down the field. Scanning the label gives you the user score for that vintage, plus a personalized rating for how it compares to previous wines you’ve enjoyed. By rating the wines I tried, I was able to get a better sense of my preferred styles and remember which labels to avoid in the future. It was also excellent to have on hand when we went to Bordeaux and sampled various Grand Crus. The app helped me to get a sense for how much those bottles would fetch back home, and whether it was worth it to buy it in France to bring home or to seek it out at my local liquor store.
Books
Dracula by Bram Stoker. The vampire book that started it all (well, not quite), this one really does live up to its reputation as a classic. A few years ago, I read Stoker’s The Jewel of Seven Stars and enjoyed it tremendously (it even served as the inspiration for a Dark Sun one-shot scenario I wrote based around Queen Tara), so I’m not sure what took me so long to get to Dracula. The epistolary style is really well done and should serve as a reference point for any game masters who long to add handouts to their campaigns. It’s inspired me to try running Night’s Black Agents in the new year.
Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch. Apparently this book is the first in an urban fantasy series I’ve been sleeping on for some time. The easy comparison is Storm Front, the first book in the Dresden Files, but I have to say that this one comes out on top re: modern wizard investigator stories, mostly because of the protagonist’s sense of humor and the audiobook narrator’s brilliant delivery. I think fans of British TV will find themselves very much at home with this book. I had the happy accident of being in London while reading this, and I had been exploring Covent Garden and the alleys surrounding the Royal Opera House immediately before reading the finale, which helped tremendously when picturing the final scenes.
Slaying the Dragon by Ben Riggs. With the news of the recent Hasbro layoffs affecting the D&D team at Wizards of the Coast, this book feels like required reading to understand some of the boom and bust cycles of D&D (although, sadly, D&D seems to be doing better than ever, and the layoffs appear to be mandated to help cover losses elsewhere in the company). It’s hard to fact-check/cross-reference this book because so much of it is original research and interviews done by the author, but that’s precisely why it’s a must-read for fans of the franchise.
Music
All Quiet on the Western Front (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film). One word: haunting. The main “melody” is extremely simplistic, but it fits the subject matter so well. I also recommend the movie if you play any 20th century-based wargames or read any history. I found it interesting that this was only the first time a German production company adapted it from the book.
Seelie by CLANN. I’m not sure how to categorize this album, except it’s incredibly ambient and dark and pagan (especially Celtic). The tracks all kind of blend together in a good way, making it excellent for writing or focus work.
Gris (Original Game Soundtrack). Another great soundtrack I put on repeat this year, mostly while reading. It’s melancholic, sweeping, hopeful. I’ve never played the video game, but if it’s half as good as the score, it’ll be quite good.
Movies/TV
Barbie. I went for a “Barbenheimer” double-feature this summer, and I did not expect Barbie to hit way harder than Oppenheimer did. Ryan Gosling might have stolen the show, but the story and the feels really made this movie stay with us. Coming from a franchise development/IP approval perspective (and this is where I have to do the disclaimer that my opinions are my own, I’m not speaking on behalf of my employer Asmodee), I’m shocked that Mattel let this get made, but I’m so glad they did.
Blue Eye Samurai. (Netflix) I had little idea this was coming until a few weeks before the release, but this show blew me away and shattered any expectations I had for it. The character development, the animation, the voice acting, the themes… it’s hard to find faults with the show (although, perhaps Mizu’s ending was unexpected). If you enjoy samurai cinema or anime, if you’re at all interested in the history of Japan, or if you’re simply an appreciator of animation, this is a must-watch.
Vienna Blood. (PBS) I like to joke that I have a grandmother’s taste in TV, because BBC/ITV period dramas make up so much of my streaming diet, but this is a mystery/detective show first and foremost. Instead of Sherlock and Watson, you’ve got Detective Rheinhardt and Max Liebermann. Max is a Jew in 1900s Vienna and a student of Freud’s work, with the psychoanalysis lending the show an interesting frame, but I’ve also really appreciated how important his family is to the show. I’ve found it really fascinating how they explore the many peoples of the Austro-Hungarian empire before its collapse, and it’s made me want to run a Cthulhu by Gaslight campaign in Vienna (elements of which I might pull forward into the NBA game).
Video Games
Baldur’s Gate 3. (PC) It shouldn’t come as a surprise that someone whose hobbies center on Dungeons & Dragons and other roleplaying games should thoroughly enjoy this game, but I’m certain that even folks who have never rolled a d20 will be delighted by this CRPG from Larian Studios. The writing and voice performances are phenomenal, and the sheer amount of content (and thus, replayability) is staggering. I’ve logged over 60 hours playing and can easily see myself playing for 60 more. I’ve only just started Act II, so no spoilers, please!
Horizon: Forbidden West. (PS5) I was a bit of a latecomer to this game after it released in 2023, but once I started, I could barely put it down. Amazing characters? Check. Phenomenal gameplay? Check. Open-world exploration that actually evokes the feeling of discovery? Check. My only quibble is that the story isn’t quite as brilliant as the first game, but given that the first game was a masterpiece and easily in my top 5 games of all time, that’s a high bar to clear. I admit I bought a PlayStation 5 just so I could play the Burning Shores expansion when it came out in April, and while personally I had been shipping Aloy with Kotallo, I appreciate the romantic subplot being included.
What were some of your favorites from 2023? Did your list have any of the same titles as mine?

Back in the US for the first time in five years
(Wowww apparently posting on tumblr got waaaayy stupider during the time I was offline bahahahaha. took forever just to put in a cut and start a new line!)
Left home at 2:30 on Friday Japan time, got to my mom's new place around 9 pm New York time. About 22 hrs traveling in total. Not the longest and I didn't have to stop in like O'hare or any place I hate. Lots of usual flight nonsense occurred on the way, but it was overall smooth. The worst was when I got to New York and it took 30 min to get my bag because it was the very last one to be unloaded -.-; Then I was supposed to meet a driver to take me to my mom's place, but that driver got held up and sent someone else, who changed the plan, but I didn't know till I got out of baggage claim. And the driver couldn't get inside because it was so busy, so I had to just wait outside looking for his license plate amid all the many, many cars in the night. He did find me and then lectured me because I didn't have a good method of communication. I was going to rely on wifi because I couldn't find a US sim card for my old phone, a plan which would have been fine had the driver come into the airport like was the original plan. Because he was outside I couldn't access wifi. So. Anyway I tipped him with an apology... I do know better ways to have a phone when you travel internationally, but the problem is my current phone is just too old. It works just fine in Japan but can't do apps and no one makes anything for it. So I need a new one, but I just didn't want to pay through the nose for it so I didn't rush it...
Whatever. I got to the house in the end.
My mom's condo with her partner is small but really nice. It's weird being somewhere totally new, but much less weird than I expected because they made it so comfortable.
My mom's partner is really chill and doesn't have issues talking about my dad
The town they're living in is like Star's Hollow minus all the TV show over-decorating. It's really nice. Everyone is old though x'D I've seen like two youngish people outside of store employees. I'm no great conversationalist to begin with, and talking to people 30-40 years older than me is even harder. All I can say is "I like your scarf." In a conversation about raffles that falsely claim to be associated with charities, I made what I thought was a reasonable comment comparing that with psychics who promise people they're in touch with their loved one and take their money. Of course, one lady nearby totally believes psychics are real and "has done years of research on it." I'm like ok I'm not saying psychic powers can't exist, I'm saying taking people's money while lying to them is bad... and then uhhh just moved on to complimenting her scarf.
They're nice people but it is funny, watching a large crowd of people have conversations over each other, no one really interested in what each other is saying but just happy to be talking while another person is near and talking too...? My mom wants to talk about a movie she watched, so she's talking about that, at the same time her partner is talking about the food, their friend can't hear either of them because it's so loud so she's talking about the drinks at the bar. There was really no coherence! But everyone is happy and having fun. I don't get it but I guess that's why I suck at small talk.
Also talked to my dad. He said hello and then shared all his medical updates, which apparently includes he's got some very slow-acting form of leukemia! Sooo that was a fun surprise! I got to cry on my first day back!
I am also sick. Started with a sore throat literally the day before I was supposed to leave and bit by bit got other symptoms. Fortunately it didn't fuck me up too much on the plane. Probably just a cold. Keep crossing my fingers I'll be over it soon.
but I'm overall happy. I will feel better when I'm no longer sick and jetlagged, but it's nice to see my mom. I don't like all these crowds, but I like the area and I think during the week I won't be getting shuffled all over the place so much. it's gonna go by fast so I gotta appreciate

New TV live and TeamAyu app
Edit June 29: TeamAyu sent out an email updating international fans on the app’s status
—
Today marks the launch of the TeamAyu app that will replace the existing web-based version of Ayumi Hamasaki’s official fan club. Unfortunately, the app is only available in the Japan App Store. While initially Japan-only, the most recent iteration of the fan club was open to global fans for the past 10 years, and app pre-registration asked if fans lived outside of Japan. Because of this, it is unclear at this time if the region-locking is permanent. I have written to support and will report back if I hear anything. The current web-based version is still available through June 30th.
While having seemingly thrown international fans into chaos, Ayu also announced she will be performing three songs from her back catalog on MUSIC FAIR July 8th! The diverse offering includes “SEASONS,” “SURREAL,” and “talkin’ 2 myself.” The next day, she will embark on her 47 prefecture 25th anniversary tour.

God, do I miss the Wii?
For what it's worth, I don't think things from the past are inherently better than things from the present. And I also love the direction that Nintendo has taken the Switch in, and I think it was a wise and effective choice. That said...the Wii nostalgia is really starting to set in. Now that we're a sufficient distance away from the Wii, and Nintendo's current direction is significantly different, I think the pros and cons are starting to shine through. Mostly it was this video about ordering pizza on a defunct Japan-only food delivery channel that hit me hard with the feeling. The Wii was in that era where game companies were convinced that the future was making an "all-in-one" media device for the living room. We didn't know back in 2006 exactly how smartphones or smart TVs would become the ubiquitous all-in-one devices. So Nintendo designed the Wii to be a place to check the weather, check the news, share your Miis, vote on polls, and I guess maybe order dinner. There was no standard UX practices for how these things should be presented as apps back then, and Nintendo seemed adamant about crafting each of these experiences with their own charm and personality. It's also funny that I had thought that the Wii interface was personality-less and too "Apple" at the time, but looking back on it now, I miss that it at least had more of a visual identity. As people have already spilled a lot of ink about, the Switch UI, plus Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, Mario Tennis, etc. all share a somewhat unified "blank" modern aesthetic that seems mostly intent to avoid your notice. The Wii had big round buttons, and felt like a magical television set! That counts for something! That's not to say that these things were perfect or super useful. And obviously I wouldn't use my Switch to check the weather in 2023, even if I could. But still, it's a bummer to see the Switch's [probably well-advised] shift into being a pure gaming machine. From what I hear, even the lack of start-up music on the Switch was a necessary trade-off to get the load-times the be near-instant when docking, undocking, and turning the console on. I'm hoping that whatever Nintendo makes next tries to strike a balance. The Wii U/3DS era seemed like a smart compromise: largely gaming-focused devices that still allowed for charm, customization, cute presentation, social features with other players, and other unique gimmicks. Please just give me a little something to brighten my day.

How to Master Japanese Language Through Immersion Techniques
Mastering the Japanese Language can be both a challenging and rewarding journey. Among the most effective ways to achieve fluency is through immersion techniques. Immersion allows you to learn the language in a natural, context-rich environment, simulating how native speakers acquire their linguistic skills. In this guide, we’ll explore how you can use immersion techniques to master the Japanese Language effectively and efficiently.
What is Language Immersion?
Language immersion is a method of learning where you surround yourself with the target language as much as possible. By constantly interacting with the Japanese Language, you improve your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in a more organic manner compared to traditional study methods. Immersion can be achieved by living in Japan or creating a language-rich environment at home.
Benefits of Immersion in Learning Japanese Language
Contextual Learning: Exposure to real-life situations helps you understand how the Japanese Language is used in context.
Enhanced Retention: Constant repetition and exposure improve memory retention of vocabulary and grammar.
Cultural Understanding: Immersion introduces you to Japanese culture, traditions, and nuances, which are integral to mastering the language.
Natural Pronunciation: Listening to native speakers regularly improves your accent and intonation.
Strategies for Immersing Yourself in the Japanese Language
1. Live in Japan
The ultimate immersion experience is living in Japan. Being surrounded by the Japanese Language daily accelerates your learning process. Here’s how to make the most of your time:
Engage Locally: Participate in community activities, attend language exchange meetups, and interact with locals.
Work or Study: Enroll in a Japanese school or secure a job that requires you to use the Japanese Language regularly.
2. Create a Japanese Environment at Home
If living in Japan isn’t an option, you can still immerse yourself in the Japanese Language at home:
Watch Japanese Media: Stream Japanese movies, anime, or TV shows with subtitles to improve listening comprehension.
Listen to Japanese Podcasts and Music: Surround yourself with spoken Japanese during commutes or daily routines.
Set Your Devices to Japanese: Change the language settings on your phone, computer, and apps to practice daily.
3. Practice Speaking Daily
Speaking is a crucial aspect of mastering the Japanese Language. Practice daily by:
Joining Language Exchange Programs: Connect with native Japanese speakers online or in person to practice conversation.
Talking to Yourself: Narrate your day or describe what you see around you in Japanese to reinforce vocabulary.
Hire a Tutor: Work with a professional tutor who can provide feedback and guidance.
4. Immerse Through Reading and Writing
Read Japanese Books and Articles: Start with children’s books or manga and progress to newspapers and novels.
Write Daily: Keep a journal in Japanese to practice sentence structure and kanji.
Use Flashcards: Create flashcards for new words and phrases to reinforce memory.
5. Attend Immersion Events
Look for immersion-based programs or events that focus on the Japanese Language:
Language Retreats: Join intensive language programs that emphasize speaking and listening.
Cultural Workshops: Participate in workshops on Japanese cooking, calligraphy, or tea ceremonies to learn vocabulary related to these activities.
Overcoming Challenges in Japanese Language Immersion
Initial Overwhelm: It’s normal to feel overwhelmed at first. Start with manageable tasks, like learning 10 new words a day.
Consistency: Immersion requires consistent effort. Set aside dedicated time daily for your language practice.
Fear of Mistakes: Embrace mistakes as part of the learning process. The more you use the Japanese Language, the more confident you’ll become.
Combining Immersion with Structured Learning
While immersion is powerful, combining it with structured learning can enhance your progress. Consider enrolling in formal Japanese classes, using language apps, or studying textbooks alongside your immersion practices.
Conclusion
Mastering the Japanese Language through immersion techniques is an enriching way to achieve fluency. Whether you’re living in Japan or creating an immersive environment at home, consistency and active participation are key. By integrating these strategies into your daily routine, you can unlock the full potential of immersion and take your Japanese skills to new heights.
