(OOPS MY HAND SLIPPED HAVE SOME SOLLAVELLEN ANGST)

No. He didn’t kill her. He couldn’t have. Chuckles, what have you done?

Varric held his breath as the inquisition group stepped through the eluvian. Cassandra charged ahead of Blackwall and Dorian, shouting orders to other soldiers who had been waiting with bated breath for the Inquisition's return from facing the Qunari. Varric barely heard the seeker as he stared in horror at what was in front of him. Clutched in Tom Rainer’s arms was the Inquisitor, Nyx Lavllen. The Dalish woman hung limply in his arms, clearly unconscious. Her red hair was falling out of its usual braid, laying loosely across her freckled covered cheeks. Her mage robes were stained with dark crimson blood. Yet that wasn’t what Varric couldn’t take his eyes off of. 

Her arm and the anchor were gone. 

How is that even possible? Chuckles, what did you do?

Varric wondered as he stared at the blood dripping stump. Strings of sinew and flesh hung freely, their edges burned black. 

“The Inquisitor needs a doctor now!” Cassandra yelled again. 

“Yes, your worship!” one of the soldiers yelled, running off.

Varric swallowed, finally finding his feet. He walked over to his two former companions, as Dorian was vigorously wrapping Nyx’s bloody stump. He opened his mouth to speak, but for the first time ever in Varric’s life he couldn’t seem to find what to say. 

“What happened? He finally managed to stammer out. 

“He happened. Solas. Nyx charged off without us, yelling that she needed to help him from the Saarebas.” Dorian said, his voice weary.

“That bastard. I’ll kill him!” Blackwall growled. The gray warden’s hands tightened around the limp body, protectively.

“If we ever even find him! You saw the crossroads! The place is bigger than all of Tevinter!” the mage cursed. 

Varric’s ears rang and his head swam. Everything became background noise, as he tried to comprehend everything. Yet his brain refused to believe it. 

Chuckles…he loved her…he would have never hurt her. 

He stepped aside and watched as two Inquisition soldiers came forward with a stretcher. Gently, Blackwall laid Nyx down. Her eyes fluttered for a moment as if she was waking, but didn’t open. Her lips twitched as if she was trying to speak. Varric didn’t need to guess who’s name she was trying to say. 

He swallowed once more, letting the chaos pass him by as she was carried away.

Hours later he sat outside the large overly embellished door to the guest room that the Inquisitor was staying in. By his side was the seeker once again, now wearing her normal Victoria outfit once more.

He grunted as he stared at the floor. 

“I can’t imagine you find this situation amusing, Varric.” Cassandra hissed with her usual cold tone. 

“I don’t.” The dwarf grunted. “But I do find comfort in that no matter what happens, somehow we always end up sitting in the same room together, Seeker” 

Cassandra gave him a small smile. A rare look for her stern face. 

Varric sighed leaning back against the cold wall. A quiet horror and dismay had covered the winter palace. Cullen and Leliana were busy trying to see if they could open the Eluvian Solas had gone through again. While Josephine was busy trying to convince the council to hold a recess until everything was solved. While the inquisitor’s inner circle had gone to deal with their emotions about the situation in their own way. 

The door creaked open and the physician walked out. Varric jumped to his feet with Cassandra. 

“She’ll be alright. She just needs a lot of rest right now. However, her arm is gone for good I’m afraid.” The doctor said, wiping his bloodied hands with a rag. “The good news is that her life is no longer in danger from the Anchor.”

“So the Anchor is completely gone? How is that even possible?” Cassandra asked, clearly befuddled. The seeker turned and looked at Varric. “We need to find Solas as soon as possible. Whatever he plans to do with the anchor…” Cassandra trailed off, not wanting to finish the sentence.  

Varric nodded. 

“I know. Why don’t you go see what Curly and Nightingale have found. I’ll stay with the kid.” He said. 

Cassandra nodded, walking away with the doctor. 

Varric walked into the Inquisitor's room. Nyx laid in the oversized bed embellished bed. Her red hair stuck out against the white sheets and her pale skin. She looked so fragile and breakable. The stump that used to be her arm was wrapped tightly in white bandages that were becoming slightly crimson with blood. Her chest rose and fell slowly with shallow breaths. 

Varric sighed, pulling the chair from the desk in the corner. He sat it down next to the bedside, sinking down into it. 

“I told you kid. This story is no good for heroes.”

Nyx fluttered in between dreams and memories. She watched her mother cry as her clan's keeper told her that her daughter was cursed. She remembered the warmth of the sun on her face as she was finally able to cast her first spell. She felt her knees scrap against stone as she tried to climb to freedom from the fade, as she ran from the fear spiders. She felt the warmth blossom in her chest as Solas kissed her for the first time. She then felt the pain of her heart tear into two as she watched her lover walk away from the secluded cove. She remembered his warmth, his love for the fade, his stories and artistry as he painted the rotunda at Skyhold. She felt the warmth and bitter sadness as he kissed her goodbye, promising to never forget her. 

Nyx flexed her fingers feeling the soft Orleasian sheets, as all the memories and dreams faded away. She dared not open her eyes as she desperately wanted to sink back down into blissful oblivion.

“Varric?” She croaked. She could hear the familiar sound of his pen scratching against paper. 

“I’m here kid.” Varric said, grabbing her remaining hand. His calloused hand was warm and comforting. 

“He’s gone isn’t he?” she whimpered. 

“Yeah…he’s gone.” 

Nyx turned her head, and for the first time since before the Conclave she allowed herself to cry.

Okay, I've been in angst for so long I re-watched a much of older Jane Austin moves on Netflix and... you guys... they're all solavellan.

Solas & Predjudice

A slew of miscommunications and “prejudices” cause a kerfuffle for the Bennet family. The main couple, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, eventually find love after throwing away their pride, and the prejudices they heard about the other from untrustworthy sources. All of the attraction between the two is conveyed without them touching, halted broken voices, the infamous “hand,” etc.

Austen is thought to have taken her title from a passage in Fanny Burney's Cecilia (1782), a novel she is known to have admired: "The whole of this unfortunate business," said Dr Lyster, "has been the result of PRIDE and PREJUDICE. ... if to PRIDE and PREJUDICE you owe your miseries, so wonderfully is good and evil balanced, that to PRIDE and PREJUDICE you will also owe their termination."

The American novelist Anna Quindlen observed in an introduction to an edition of Austen's novel in 1995: Pride and Prejudice is also about that thing that all great novels consider, the search for self. And it is the first great novel that teaches us this search is as surely undertaken in the drawing room making small talk  (hello, DragonAge Dialogue) as in the pursuit of a great white whale...

Next is Jane Eyre, in which the male Protag, Edward, might be the best comparison to Solas I can imagine.

Jane (well spoken, soft, witty, good, kind) falls in love with a loner but rich landowner (Edward). There is something fishy about him tho, we are led to believe there's something dangerous/off about him, if he is housing a demon/animal, or is in fact a demon himself. They attempt to marry, but the ceremony is stopped. Its discovered "the demon" is his wife, a mentally unstable woman who Edward married to save. He literally calls her “My own demon.” He wants to protect this deranged woman (out of duty? misplaced duty?) but loves Jane deeply. Jane runs away, makes a life for herself, feel guilt, then goes back to him to find his house burned, the woman dead, and Edward blind. They kiss, you assume happy ending.

Edward thought to protect Jane by NOT FUCKING TALKING TO HER Bro like come on what are you even... like you should have fucking told her. Gods damn it Solas Edward just use your outdoor voice and talk to the pretty lady.

They do end up together, but only after Edward has gone through great physical and emotional strife, pretty much of his own doing, I think we can all agree.

And I'd be remis to not talk about Persuasion, because the scene is set so perfectly for Veilguard.

In Persuasion, the book starts up several years after protag Anne breaks off her Engagement with Love Interest (TM) Captain Frederick Wentworth.

Once AGAIN, through NOT FUCKING TALKING TO EACH OTHER, they think the other has moved on, and they try not to intrude on the others life. But (in the movie), Wentworth writes her a beautiful confession letter, which I will put here with some *minor* modifications:

Dearest Inquisitor Levellan, I can listen no longer in silence. Vhenan, you pierce my soul. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I am half agony, half hope. I know too much time has passed, and you have moved on, but I will never forgive myself if I do not tell you this. You alone have brought me to heel. For you alone, I think and plan. But of course, you have not seen this, how could you? Because your love has not lasted as long as mine. Vhenan, I have loved no one but you and I don’t think I ever will. I have thought many times about how to tell you this. But the pain of a love unrequited (except for Soals it’s the pain of perceived duty/guilt) rendered me silent.  Tell me not that I am too late. My love for you has never faltered. Yours, eternal, Solas Fen’Harel What is even your real name just tell me cuz its NOT FUCKING WISDOM YOU DUMB EGG

Solas is so ANCIENT, and GDL voices him SO WELL, with that welsh-tinge, its so hard NOT to put this love story in with the romance classics. Especially with the main theme being JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER YOU FUCKING IDIOTS.

I am just hoping and praying and huffing that copium that we get a happy ending, and not a sad one.

Or even better, through our interactions with Solas' memories, that we get to choose.

it was mostly about a solavellan reunion

it suddenly hit me and unblocked a bonus fear: solavellan ending just like in the movie/book. like a bit melancholic yet happy ending in which love wins and future seems much brighter than before and... then you found out it isn't real, it's just a story told by someone else as a try to make things right for them and bring a happiness because they deserved it even if the reality was never kind to them.

Varric, a storyteller, if you will try to make this Atonement thing to me, I will find you and I will kill you.

hi hello, i’ve been in the group since about 2018 so some of you have probably seen me around i was That Void that had all the fate muses and it’s been a Hot Minute. i love fate a lot and am also a big fan of dragon age, elden ring, dark souls, mass effect, and bloodborne so if you ever ask me about that just. just i am so sorry if i start rambling. i am also an artist and draw a lot, i have a lot of hobbies i kinda dip my toes in a lot of things. i'm very easily distracted or can hyperfocus to an alarming degree hence with how sporadic i can be

Aaaaa thank you darling!! Gonna try and include a variety of fandoms I've written for over the years

Something Old, Something New Percy/Vex wedding fic feat. Syldor (back when his name was spelled with an i)! This got superseded by canon in multiple ways, but I really feel like I nailed the dynamic between Vex and her father and I'm still really happy with how this turned out.

In Our Bedroom After the War Terra/Aqua post-Kingdom Hearts 3. Written for a Terraqua Fanzine, I think that this might be some of my best prose. I still love how this turned out, and it's my headcanon for Post-KH3 Terra and Aqua.

Hiding in Plain Sight Jodie/Shuuichi Detective Conan casefic. I think that I managed to write a credible murder mystery here, and it was really fun to explore the multiple clandestine angles in this one.

Worldgating Jane Foster/Thor, this was my fusion fic with the Young Wizards universe and my love letter to Jane Foster. I'm still delighted with some of the twists on both canons that I managed with this story.

The Day the World Ended Solas/Lavellan, unfinished and tragically to probably remain so, but it's still 60k of slowburn time travel fic. I really love the beginning/first act of this and think it has some excellent momentum. It was once I got to the middle of the fic that I got bogged down and didn't know where I was going.

Right, so...I have a lot of OC's. Holy crap, did this get long. I'll go by fandom to keep them organized, and listed here are just the main player types, not background characters. And if you want to know more about any of them, they can all be found here.

Fallout 4

Nora Howard (Junkyard 'Verse series): My first SoSu. Nora is the default name and I struggled for a long time to come up with a last name for her. At the time, I thought it would be funny for her to share a name with Todd Howard, and then it stuck.

Valara Thorsgaard (Set to Repeat, Subject to Change): Lamb the Younger gave me the first name and I liked it. Val, for short. The Scandinavian last name was just...I dunno, it felt right?

Honoria Wilcox (No One Knows): 'Honoria' is a version of Nora. Her maiden name was Beaufort, because it was slightly pretentious and so was Honoria's mother. Wilcox was her late husband's name and she was glad to take it.

Eleanor (Nights series): Another Nora variant, no last name.

Joan Whitfield (The Bargain): I wanted something different for this OC since she ends up with Kellogg. (All my Nora variants end up with Hancock.) The first name comes from my extended family, and the last name sounds lawyerish. 😆

Tien Xu (Unexpected): Ahh, the SoSu from my first real AU. She's a Chinese prisoner of war who ended up in the Vault. No real reason for her given name, but 'Tien' was my favorite chemistry professor's last name back when I was in college.

Alice Monroe (Amends to the Dead): My most recent SoSu. From the get go I wanted her to be a badass, because let's face it, you get pretty OP'd with some of those skills in-game. 'Alice' is a nod to Resident Evil. 'Monroe' is just because it sounded good.

Mass Effect Trilogy

Jayne Shepard (Soldier, Spectre, Savior series): It's the default FemShep name, but I changed the spelling. That's really it.

Jehanne Shepard (Some Kind of Resolution): Henna, for short. Jehanne is a phonetic variant of Jane.

The Wayhaven Chronicles

Aya Batra (Little Things): Batra is one of the surnames you can choose when making your Detective, but Aya was my own invention. It's a variation of an old D&D character (Aeo, who in turn is a variation on Io). Someday I want to write more for her.

Dragon Age

(oh boy, here we go)

Da'Fen Carlisle Mayers Lavellan (Until It Squeaks series): Carly, to her friends. My first MGIT. When I created her I wanted her to be a 'just some person' kind of character, so she needed a name that didn't stand out much. Tbh, I don't even like it. I think I was halfway through writing Twist when I decided it was short for Carlisle, which eased my meh a little. Then as time went on in the story, she earned the rest. Abelas was the first to call her 'Da'Fen' because she was the Consort of Fen'Harel, and she was formally adopted into Clan Lavellan after the events of the main game.

Imogen McLean (Wicked Things series): My ex wouldn't let me name Lamb the Younger Imogen when she was born, so I decided I would save it for a character someday. And so I did. 'McLean' because she's of Irish descent, and I knew a girl by that family name when I was a kid.

Eliana Hawke (Wicked Things series): I tend to give my F!Hawkes unique names, I guess. But this one was for the purpose of Imogen getting to call her Elly and Elly getting to call her Genny. It was a deliberate 'the names you use denote intimacy level' kind of thing.

Terisin Mahariel (Wicked Things series): It means 'Flint-like'. I wanted something hefty for the HoF, something that would give the impression of gravity and determination. And then everyone in the fic shortens it to 'Ter'. 🤣

Mira Foret (Driftwood series): This is actually a nickname, her full name is Almira. Her family name on Earth was 'Wood', and upon being transported to Thedas, she changed it to 'Foret', which is the Orlesian version of the word. There is actually a reason she has these names in particular, but that gets into level 40 IRL stuff, so I shan't say.

Carmilla Hawke (Maker Damned Fools): Cara, for short, and only if you have her permission. Back when I first wrote MDF, I had a notion that Leandra wanted to give all her children names beginning with the same letter. "How'd Bethany happen?" Varric asked. Because they didn't know they were having twins and had to come up with a name on the fly and Malcolm had a twisted sense of humor. It makes more sense in the fic. Anyway, she hates the name, and thus goes mostly by Hawke.

Hera Trevelyan (No More My Heart Beats Without You): I just liked it. Didn't even know it was the default name of F!Adaar. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ellisora Lavellan (Flowers For Fen'Harel series): Everyone uses Ellana. It's the default. I don't like defaults (usually) and will twist them around any which way until I find something I do like.

Sa'vir Lavellan (No Strings): It means 'the First Path' or, more precisely for her character, 'the Only Way'. It was both to give some backstory to her and was a nod to her being inspired by The Unending Wake's Vir.

Lahalaan Lavellan (My Blood On Your Hands, Your Teeth In My Skin): Ahh, my poor Laani. She kicked around as an OC for a long time before I finally was able to write something for her. She was always meant to have a longfic, but it never happened. It means 'Like the Foxes', and it suits her as a redhead and a rogue class.

La'Vise Lavellan (Just Like Fire): The title of the fic is the definition of the name. She is my one canon story. I am utterly unsurprised at myself for not finishing it.

Lark Cadash (All the Earth and Air series): Again, default is bleh. Malika > Lika > Lark. Then I leaned into the bird symbolism.

Shae Cadash (Destiny Is Just In the Timing): This is apparently a popular name for a Cadash, lol. In order to set her apart (both in fandom and in my head), it's actually a nickname. Her full name is Shaelgat, meaning 'Unto Shale', and it has Lore(tm). A daughter of every generation is named this, and will be until they find the golem they're named after.

Banal'ras Nydha, the Twice-Born (Hope Is a Fragile Thing): She's actually a MGIT, who was given the name 'the Shadow of Night' by Solas in the Fade before she became corporeal in Thedas. She has a shtick that goes with it, the ability to use Fade cloak even though she isn't a mage otherwise. Ya know, like Cole. Her story and name are part and parcel with each other and mostly because I wanted to make an OC who was Deeply Mysterious(tm) without ever explaining it. The legend-mark comes from the Avvar, among whom she lives at the start of her fic.

Virlas Lavellan (I'll tell you my sins (and you can sharpen your knife)): Default, bleh. Symbolically fitting name, yay. It means 'the Way That is Given' or something like that. This was a giftfic turned treat for the Solavellan Hell Exchange, and I didn't think too hard about the name other than something that would fit for a post-canon Lavellan.

Rinna Cadash (What Lies Beneath): Another giftfic OC. Dwarven names tend towards being short and this one just felt right.

Eshali'nan Lavellan (A Wolf Named Vengeance): This fic is a modern AU collab with my beloved Angel, and someday we'll finish it, lol. Esha, for short, was another OC that kicked around for a long time like Laani. She has quite a backstory that will likely never get told because frankly, I'm tired of writing DA retellings. Originally she was a Sentinel in Arlathan, who spent most of the intervening years in uthenera like Solas, but woke a generation ago. She lived with the Lavellan clan and was chosen to go to the Conclave. The name means 'Daughter of Vengeance' and was chosen for her at her elevation to Sentinel status.
