Originally, he was going to apologize to her. Jamie wasn't the best when it came to sensitive situations, and he'd learned that after his divorce and since raising the hellish teenager that was Avery. But something about apologizing didn't feel right. He knew he had to do something else.
"Well, men are worthless, so that doesn't surprise me," he spoke casually, letting out a snort. He stood up straighter and shrugged his shoulders at her. "What do you need 'im for? The new year's gonna start with or without him. Let's enjoy it together."
He glanced at the crowd over at his side and then flashed her a smile; the lights of the big screens and the holographic confetti shone on his face, and reflected against her hair. "Times Square on New Year's Eve. I couldn't think of anywhere else I want to be right now, at this moment," he said, attempting to be sincere. The announcers on the nearest stage told the crowd there was less than a minute left until the new year. "And, it's not so bad that you're here, too."
callmewhenyougetthis:
The further they walked, the more Jamie sensed the sudden drop in Norah’s mood. Sure, they were still strangers, but some tonal shifts were more obvious than others. And he couldn’t help but wonder if this Billiam had anything to do with it, but he kept quiet as they walked for now, not wanting to pry. At least, just yet.
He let Norah speak first. “Oh, I wouldn’t say that,” he said, chuckling. “I lost her tonight, after all. But… I haven’t accidentally killed her yet, so I guess I could say I’m doin’ alright.” His relationship with Avery was fickle, though it felt good to have his efforts recognized.
Once they were as close to the ball drop as they could get, Jamie asked, “Do you wanna try calling him?”
The mother of four couldn’t bring herself to even laugh at Jamie’s joke, as even though he stated he was doing the bare minimum, she realized that she couldn’t even do that. Norah nodded at his suggestion and dialed his number, bringing the receiver close to her ear so Billiam could get a good lecture from her or to hide him from her new acquaintance.
Endless ringing, endless ringing and she felt the blood rush from her face. You’ve reached Billiam Worthin—— and before he outgoing message could even finish she hung up and threw her phone back into her purse. “I, uh, I think his phone is dead… Super bummer.”

THE VINYL SCRATCH SERVES ITS FIRST SEASON
New Post has been published on https://tileyardeducation.co.uk/vinyl-scratch-first-season/
THE VINYL SCRATCH SERVES ITS FIRST SEASON
As part of Tileyard Education’s lustrous new events programme, a brand-new, all-inclusive, inspiring open mic night has been born – The Vinyl Scratch.
The Vinyl Scratch is a platform for Tileyard Education’s own MA students to showcase their talent, but it’s also an open call to any musicians who want a platform to perform in front of the industry, to build connections with our students, as well as the wider networks based within Tileyard’s creative hub.
Hosted within The Vinyl Cafe, Tileyard Studios, London, it is beating heart that serves the local community, and for one night a month, it is dressed in neon pink for some added ambience, fitted with a mobile backline, courtesy of EPA Sound, and is transformed into a fit-for-purpose live performance venue. The launch of the event was also supported Kazbar Systems, who have been nurturing the event through it’s first season.
The Vinyl Scratch kicked off with ‘Round One’, in January, 2018, serving the last Tuesday of every month. For each event, The Vinyl Cafe opened its doors for a sharp 7pm sign up, with a maximum of 12 acts per night. Each performer got to play one original song, or a cover of their choice, and at the end of the night, the audience were all invited to vote for their ‘Top 3’, which was tallied up to conclude with the 3 winners. Each winner got to take home a prize (including online music vouchers from Music Gurus and a £50 bar tab), and the ‘Top 2’ recieved an exclusive invitation to play the final Vinyl Scratch of the season, the ‘Industry Showcase’.
The event has also welcomed guest appearances throughout the season, including Emma Stakes (X-Factor), Penny Foster (Lana Del Ray), Sarah Goodwin, John Zazzaro (Media Tech Ventures), Horus Music and many more.
After serving 5 rounds, The Vinyl Scratch invited back their Top 10 for their Industry Showcase. With an ecclectic mix of Tileyard Education’s own students, ICMP students, beatboxing pros and solo artists, the diversity stunned the audience as The Vinyl Cafe packed out for it’s climatic grande finale. It of course, couldn’t have been an industry showcase without judges. Tileyard Education put together a line-up of A&R scouts and Label Managers. Joining the Industry Showcase was Jason Sharpe – A&R, Tileyard Music, David Rowell & James Corbitt – Autonomy Music Group, Vanesh – SYCO (scout), and Richard Hannan – Executive Vice President, Big Indie Records.
The judges were asked to mark each act out of 10 and provide feedback on their overall performance. Then, at the end of the night, they were given a final 15 minutes after to tally up the results and pick their winner.
The winner was granted access to Tileyard Education’s Summer Music Camp (worth £1999!), a meeting with Big Indie Records, and a half-day recording in TYe London’s world-class studio (used by Duke Dumont, Sam Smith, Ella Eyre).
Richard Hannan (Big Indie), announced the winner live to the audience, and it was ‘Begut’ that stole the show. Begut (Bea) is a Spanish singer-songwriter currently living in London, she is an ex-ICMP student and has been busy travelling Europe with her music. With neo-soul and jazz tones, her main influences are Lianne La Havas, Norah Jones, Jamie Woon and Leon Bridges. Bea and her band were thrilled with their win! We caught up with Bea after the event to ask her how she felt;
“Thank you so so much, I feel so honoured to be the winner! We had a lovely time playing and the atmosphere was amazing.”
We also caught up with Richard, to ask him what made Begut stand out from the other acts;
“There was so much talent to choose from on the night, but there could only be one winner – it was a difficult task for the judges. But in the end, it’s about the overall presentation, not just the song. Begut were a great overall band, their song was a cool indie pop rendition with a lot of heartfelt emotion by lead singer Bea. Likewise, the band were really tight, and performed flawlessly and with gusto. I personally feel they can fit in nicely alongside old-school Paramore and Wolf Alice.”
Richard and Bea are arranging their first meeting to discuss ways in which Big Indie Records may be able to support her and her music. Not bad for winning an open mic night!
The Vinyl Scratch will be back for its Second Season in September 2018, with some new twists! Dates to be announced soon. If you want to be one of the first to know when the new date is announced, sign up to our event mailing list here.

This tag was created by Jamie at The Perpetual Page Turner. It’s a lovely blog that y’all should definitely check out.
Now, I’m always looking for an interesting book tag, because I personally think they’re tons of fun! When I stumbled across this one, I was positively enchanted. So, without further ado, the A-Z book tag!
Author you’ve read the most books from
I’ve never gotten into a really long series of books (and stuck with it), so I think the answer to this question is David Levithan, at six books.
Best Sequel Ever
Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness, #3 in the Chaos Walking Trilogy. I really liked The Ask and the Answer (#2), but Monsters of Men blew me away.
Currently Reading
Paradise by Toni Morrison.
Drink of choice while reading
Coffee, definitely. I drink coffee while I write, and I drink coffee while I read. My newest tactic to get out of my latest slump is to keep reading until I run out of coffee. So far, so good.
E-reader or physical book
Physical book. I understand the appeal of an e-reader, sure, but I’m an extremely tactile person and having the physical book where I can physically turn the pages actually really helps me focus.
Fictional character you probably would have dated in high school
Jacob from North of Beautiful. I don’t necessarily have a type, but he just tickles me. That said, my biggest fictional high school crush was (and still is) Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars: The Clones Wars. If I have a type, she’s it.
Glad you gave this book a chance
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
Hidden gem book
Nevermore by Kelly Creagh.
Important moment in your reading life
Reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It’s the book that really inspired me to write.
Just finished
I’ve been in a slump for a few months, but the last book I read was The Gunslinger by Stephen King.
Kinds of books you won’t read
Erotica and like hard romance. It’s just not for me.
Longest book you’ve read
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J.K. Rowling, 784 pages.
Major book hangover because of
The Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness.
Number of bookcases you own
One. It’s not big enough.
One book you have read multiple times
The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff. It’s not necessarily a good book, but it’s extremely imaginative and I love it.
Preferred place to read
In bed.
Quote that inspires you/gives you all the feels from a book you’ve read
“And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.” – Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Reading Regret
I regret never finishing the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I read The Lightning Thief years ago and absolutely loved it, but I just never got around to reading the rest of them.
Series you started and need to finish (all books are out in the series)
See above.
Three of your all-time favorite books
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
Unapologetic fangirl for
Toni Morrison, light of my life.
Very excited for this release more than all the others
I don’t currently have a book release I’m extremely excited for. I’m somewhat excited for Patrick Ness’ new book, Release. Honestly, the thing I’m most excited for right now is Mass Effect: Andromeda. I’m a gamer, you see, and a total slut for everything BioWare.
Worst bookish habit
Starting books and not finishing them. I got a third of the way through Kindred by Octavia Butler and just … stopped. Can’t tell you why. I was really enjoying the book.
X marks the spot: start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book
Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn.
Your latest book purchase
ZZZ-snatcher book (last book that kept you up WAY late)
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
That’s the A-Z Bookish Survey! If you want to do this, consider yourself tagged! Make sure you leave me a link so I can read your responses.
A-Z Book Tag This tag was created by Jamie at The Perpetual Page Turner. It's a lovely blog that y'all should definitely check out.

The further they walked, the more Jamie sensed the sudden drop in Norah's mood. Sure, they were still strangers, but some tonal shifts were more obvious than others. And he couldn't help but wonder if this Billiam had anything to do with it, but he kept quiet as they walked for now, not wanting to pry. At least, just yet.
He let Norah speak first. "Oh, I wouldn't say that," he said, chuckling. "I lost her tonight, after all. But... I haven't accidentally killed her yet, so I guess I could say I'm doin' alright." His relationship with Avery was fickle, though it felt good to have his efforts recognized.
Once they were as close to the ball drop as they could get, Jamie asked, "Do you wanna try calling him?"
callmewhenyougetthis:
“Thanks for your help,” Jamie spoke with a soft smile. In truth, if it wasn’t for Norah, he might’ve berated Avery for a little while longer. There were some helpful strangers left around after all.
Just as he was about to let her go enjoy the rest of her New Year’s Eve, another debacle had stumbled upon them. It was now her doofish-sounding boyfriend who was missing. “Ah, yeah, we’re all kinda like that,” he agreed, chuckling. “You helped me out, it’s only right I help you out. Maybe he’s over by where the ball’s going to be dropped, saving you a front row spot? I’ll walk you over there.”
How was she going to confess that she thinks that Billiam didn’t show up after all? That she was left to be humiliated in front of thousands of strangers on the one night that a midnight kiss was supposed to matter. Heat rose to her cheeks and a heavy sigh pulled from her chest. “Sure,” she agreed, trying to save face and started walking to the front in silence to conceal the embarrassment.
With every step, the timer counted down and the sooner she was going to have to admit she was all alone. “Your daughter is really lucky to have you, you know.” She said finally.

Jamie had a hard time telling when his attempts at sincerity worked, since they were often brushed under the rug. But he could tell, when he peered back over at the shorter brunette beside him, that for once, he'd been successful. She looked at him in a way that no one—not even his ex-wife—had looked at him before. Maybe it was the glittering New Year's Eve night producing this feeling; he wasn't quite sure. Either way, she asked him... and he couldn't say no to that face.
Five, four...
"Absolutely," he said, letting out a chuckle, trying to convince himself that she'd really asked that and he wasn't just dreaming.
Three, two...
Without another word, as couples crashed into each other with their first kiss of the new year, Jamie had done the same with Norah. He pulled her in by the small of her back and kissed her, his other hand gingerly grabbing onto the side of her face before they curled in her hair as their lips met.
One!
callmewhenyougetthis:
Originally, he was going to apologize to her. Jamie wasn’t the best when it came to sensitive situations, and he’d learned that after his divorce and since raising the hellish teenager that was Avery. But something about apologizing didn’t feel right. He knew he had to do something else.
“Well, men are worthless, so that doesn’t surprise me,” he spoke casually, letting out a snort. He stood up straighter and shrugged his shoulders at her. “What do you need ‘im for? The new year’s gonna start with or without him. Let’s enjoy it together.”
He glanced at the crowd over at his side and then flashed her a smile; the lights of the big screens and the holographic confetti shone on his face, and reflected against her hair. “Times Square on New Year’s Eve. I couldn’t think of anywhere else I want to be right now, at this moment,” he said, attempting to be sincere. The announcers on the nearest stage told the crowd there was less than a minute left until the new year. “And, it’s not so bad that you’re here, too.”
Not for the first time in her life did someone she cared about decided to bail. Jaw clenched and hands shaking slightly, Norah fought back tears from falling because once again, she was abandoned. And when she heard the word —— together, the thought of Billiam, for a short moment, dissipated. The woman looked to Jamie, catching the twinkle in his eyes and hers began to mirror. How odd that someone she’d met only minutes ago could bring her the most comfort she’d felt in years.
At the announcement that midnight was about strike, rather than panic, she locked eyes with the man she’d just met. She didn’t know if he had a partner or was even married. But she had to take a chance. “Will you?”

"Thanks for your help," Jamie spoke with a soft smile. In truth, if it wasn't for Norah, he might've berated Avery for a little while longer. There were some helpful strangers left around after all.
Just as he was about to let her go enjoy the rest of her New Year's Eve, another debacle had stumbled upon them. It was now her doofish-sounding boyfriend who was missing. "Ah, yeah, we're all kinda like that," he agreed, chuckling. "You helped me out, it's only right I help you out. Maybe he's over by where the ball's going to be dropped, saving you a front row spot? I'll walk you over there."

Finally someone had recognized his effort. “See, I’m not all that bad,” Jamie said, feeling a little proud of himself. He chuckled. “Nice to meet you. I’m Jamie.”
-
A few minutes later, once they were at that stupid rapper’s stage, he scanned the crowd for his crazy daughter. And, as Norah pointed her out, there she was: all 5'8’’ of her bratty, ungrateful self. “Yeah, that’s her.” Before he approached Avery, though, he noticed how much fun she was having with the two friends she’d snuck off to meet. It was much more fun than she’d been having with him. He glanced at Norah. “Wait here a sec, okay?”
He disappeared into the crowd for a moment, catching up with Avery. After briefly berating her for ditching him, he eventually let her hang out with her friends, giving her phone back as well. It was better this way; they’d meet back up at the hotel later tonight. Once they reached an agreement, he filtered back to the outskirts of the crowd to find Norah.
“Totally handled that well.”
Norah didn’t know why she listened — they found his daughter and she had all the reason to leave in search of Billiam — but she stayed put and watched the conversation between father and daughter. A small smile painted her lips as she witnessed the healthy interaction (healthy, she wasn’t sure how to define, but he was there and concerned for her).
She concealed her smile when Jamie returned. “Well… that’s good. I’m glad we found her.”
There was a pause before the announcement that there was five minutes left until the ball drop was made. Her hazel eyes widened as she frantically searched over the crowd to find her boyfriend. “This is so typical! I have never known a reliable man in my life.”

Twice Jamie almost burst out laughing; first at the fact that her boyfriend’s name was Billiam and second that she thought he was hitting on her. “Trust me, if I wanted to hit on you, I would be doing a much better job at it,” he spoke matter-of-factly, listening for the sound of bad rap music through the crowd. Surely, Avery would be near there. “I just looked for the first trustworthy person I could find, and it was you. I couldn’t find security anywhere, and even if I did, they’d probably just laugh in my face. Like you said, I dragged her to see Bruce Springsteen.”
What did it even mean that someone could do a better job at hitting on someone? Norah just rolled her eyes and continued on — following the sound of rap bars. She was silent for a beat; no one had ever called her trustworthy before — especially not her own children. It took everything in her to not burst out laughing, not because of how funny it was, but it was almost sad that a mere stranger had called her so. “I actually think it’s kinda sweet you brought her to see The Boss. It’s something my mom would do. I’m Norah, by the way.”
They arrived at the stage where the trending rapper would be. She saw someone who looks vaguely like the man, and pointed straight ahead. “Is that her over there?”

Though it was the first time they held hands, Jamie could've been convinced that it wasn't with the way it all just felt comfortable. It was like he'd known Norah for longer than the couple of hours they had spent together on one fateful New Year's Eve. (He supposed it was New Year's Day now.) He walked alongside her in the busy streets of New York City, following her lead.
"I would call it... a tasteful kiss," he responded jokingly. 'Making out' sounded so juvenile, but maybe the two of them needed that exact thing. "The last time I went on a date was—jeez. It's embarrassing how I don't even remember. Probably abut six months or so after my divorce got finalized. So about a year and a half ago at this point." Hopefully he didn't lose her after that. "I've just been too busy working on my book to even think about it, honestly."
Jamie laughed at the brunette’s coy remark. Her words took him by surprise, though not completely. “Alright, I hear ya. That’s fair,” he said, pulling out his wallet as he saw the waitress begin to approach them from across the diner. As she dropped the receipt on the table, he gave her a smile and set down two $20 dollar bills on top.
He flashed a grin across at Norah before standing up. “And for the record,” he said, leading the way out of the diner, “I wouldn’t call what we did making out.” Typical dad, always wanting to correct things that didn’t need to be corrected.

The conversation fell into a bit of a lull, but Jamie didn’t mind it. It was actually comfortable. There was something so intimate and personal about sharing a meal with someone, and at the same time, it was an easy way to tell if you were easily going to get along with this person. If they could coast through the silences just as they coasted through the conversation, it was a good sign.
And anyway, it gave Jamie ample opportunity to finish his food.
As he took his last bites, he caught Norah’s gaze just as she looked at him. His brows furrowed and he immediately sensed the air of mischief that suddenly contaminated the peaceful air. He snickered at her out-of-the-blue question, admiring her spontaneity but also taken aback by it. “Ice skating? You mean like, right now? I don’t know the last time I put on a pair of ice skates. Norah, you don’t know how old I am. I might break my hip.”

No matter what happened between him and his ex-wife, Jamie couldn’t imagine not being involved in Avery’s life. He couldn’t picture not being there for every birthday, every graduation, the milestones big and small. At least it seemed like Norah was present and involved in her children’s life, and for her they should be very grateful.
“Gettin’ right into the meat and bones of it, eh?” Jamie teased. “As far as why my marriage didn’t work out… I was pretty selfish for a lot of my time with Lily. We got divorced only a few years ago, but if I was in her shoes I would’a kicked me to the curb a long time ago.” He shrugged. “I’ve just always been one of those people who are super career-focused. It gets in the way sometimes.”
He took a sip of his drink and, just in time, the waitress came by with their food. It was a feast for the eyes. Taking a bite of his food, he asked Norah, “You have a lotta family back home? Ever make it back there once in a while?”
He happily listened to the woman’s vignettes of her children. Though Jamie grew up unsure he’d be the best father (and he still harbored those feelings to this day), he never found himself regretting ever having Avery. Those feelings never crossed his mind; she was as spectacular as she was a headache, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Hearing Norah talk about her own children filled him with warmth. Parenthood was truly remarkable, even if it made him want to pull his hair out sometimes.
“They sound like awesome kids,” he affirmed with a nod.
As a parent and a divorcee, he found that no questions were off the table for him. He didn’t mind answering anything and certainly wasn’t shy in asking anything. So, he was comfortable in saying, “I’m hoping Billiam isn’t the father of all of those kids.” He teased. “No offense. They just sound a little too incredible for someone of his caliber.
“Ah. We’re flying back home Tuesday afternoon, so a little bit over a day-and-a-half,” he responded.

“But then Adele wouldn’t have as big of a career,” Jamie pointed out. “Did anybody really like Rolling in the Deep? I think we all jumped on the Adele boat once Hello came out.” That was a hot take nobody needed, but it was his infamous, signature rambling that his daughter often rolled her eyes over.
Her background was a bit grim, though, and he couldn’t help but wear a soft, sympathetic expression. “I’m sorry to hear that,” he said. “At least you’ve got your kids, too.”
When the topic shifted to him, he took a deep breath and thought for a second. As narcissistic as he could be sometimes, he never once took a look at where it all came from. “Part of it is so I can have an easier time at making up my curriculum for students,” he said. “I teach some sports history classes. But, uh, besides that, I think I just like having a few projects going on at a time and having a place where I can put all my thoughts down. Books do that for me.”

He happily listened to the woman's vignettes of her children. Though Jamie grew up unsure he'd be the best father (and he still harbored those feelings to this day), he never found himself regretting ever having Avery. Those feelings never crossed his mind; she was as spectacular as she was a headache, and he wouldn't have it any other way. Hearing Norah talk about her own children filled him with warmth. "Ah. We're flying back home Tuesday afternoon, so a little bit over a day-and-a-half," he responded.
There she went again, calling him a prince. “You know, the more you say that, the more it’s gonna get to my head,” he mentioned. “I mean, it’s not there yet, so you could probably get away with it one or two more times—but eventually, you may just create a monster.” Of course he was joking around, but perhaps Jamie did have somewhat of an ego. Anyone who went out of their way to teach thought they were smart enough to, and that must mean having some kind of ego.
He chuckled at her words, finishing up another bite he’d taken. “Ah, there’s too much noise here,” he said, gesturing to his ear. “But in all seriousness, I think I just have too much Kan City pride to really try and go anywhere else. It’s a part of who I am. And well, you’re here, and I don’t know if I could really take how beautiful you are for too long.”
It had been a while since Jamie outright flirted with anyone, much less genuinely. This felt genuine. Even if they were just feeling the sparks for the night because it was New Year’s Eve, why not chase it? “Anyway, ‘nough about me. I wanna hear about you. You know Avery and I are a little dysfunctional. What’s your family like?”
