Home again. 5th March 2022

We arrived home on Friday after a trouble-free journey via Qatar.  Covid adds to the hurdles to be cleared and bits of paper to be carried: “PCR result must be shown in hard copy”. It was a bit special then to arrive in Manchester soon after 6 as only the second plane of the day, the whole place gleaming and serene as we smoothed our way through immigration then collected both cases, hurrah.

The other couple from JF, Linda and Stewart have had the complication that Stewart was positive on his PCR test despite feeling well.  He has to self-isolate in Entebbe for five days and see if his PCR is then negative to allow him to fly home.

We enjoyed our break in a pleasant hotel in Jinja on the banks of the Nile.  We needed the time to catch up and we read, swam, exercised and walked.  The hotel wasn’t busy.  Unfortunately, I picked up a stomach bug there – possibly because the hotel was less busy and food put out for a buffet was then not well enough stored/cooked before reuse.

This in some ways feels as though it reflects how Uganda felt to us.  It felt a bit depressed and impoverished due mainly to Covid.  Schools being closed for 2 years has had various ramifications – increase in teenage pregnancies, fewer children able to return to school, more domestic violence, increase in burglary in some of the towns we visited, more begging on the street in Kampala, fewer tourists with the income and jobs they create.  We spoke to one lady, Joyce, sitting by the roadside near the hotel. She said she can make any handicrafts we wanted – beads from paper, baskets etc.  She used to make them but her markets had disappeared because almost no tourists come now.

In one hotel we stayed in, they had had to close for several months.  Fortunately for Carol, the head receptionist, the owner also has a furniture factory and she was able to go and work there, though all she could do was hand sand wood. Not the kind of work she was used, to but she was grateful for it.  A trained accountant we know was recently suddenly forcibly evicted from his accommodation due to his being behind with the rent.

Some of the hospitals we visited expressed frustration that they have raised the profile of mental illness and the locals have responded, bringing their relatives – but then they ask for fees to be waived as they can’t afford to pay for the treatment.

Other hospitals are being more creative, by finding some funding for those who really can’t afford medicine., I am thinking that although Jamie’s Fund can’t afford to fund medicines directly, we need to be looking at ways to be a channel for funding if others are willing to help.

The last two days we spent in Kampala.  We had set up some meetings and most of them didn’t go to plan.  We pitched up for a 2 pm meeting to be told no, he wasn’t around today.  That was reorganised to 8 am the next day.  Mo’s 9 am meeting was cancelled at 7 am, so she came with me to meet Dr Ronald at the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau.  We had a very good meeting with him.  He is well organised (mostly!) and as we went over various issues his level of grip on the whole organisation was reassuring.  We will see how things evolve.

Mukono hospital asked us to drop by as they would like to make a presentation to Jamie’s Fund.  It was from the chairman of the hospital board thanking JF for their support. Similarly we had received a presentation from Lubaga Hospital. We think it’s almost symbolic of these two high performing hospitals, where there is excellent leadership as well as very enthusiastic professionals in the team that they should think of giving us a gift.

We are very glad of hospitals like this where there is a real drive to reach people with mental illness and epilepsy, and to make a difference. We love to meet the committed leaders and the young professionals who clearly care so much for their patients. They are a great joy.

Jamie Otis is feeling emotional amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

On Wednesday, the Married at First Sight alum, 33, got candid about what’s it like being 37 weeks pregnant during the health crisis, breaking down in tears in an Instagram video after getting tested for COVID-19 under the recommendation of her doctor.

“I feel really, really ridiculous. I’m crying like all the time these days. I feel so silly,” she says in the video filmed in the car. “I don’t know why, but I’m genuinely just so nervous.”

Otis said she started doubting herself after getting the coronavirus test, which typically involved medical professionals taking nose and throat swabs from the patient.

“Just the swab — I mean, that hurt really bad,” she shared through tears. “I was like, if I can’t handle the swab going up my nose, how am I gonna have an unmedicated childbirth? I think I’m just a little overwhelmed that I feel so annoyed at myself for being such a wimp about this.”

Otis, who shares 2½-year-old daughter Henley Grace with husband Doug Hehner, then expresses her worries of “annoying” her family with her emotions, telling fans, “I’m impatient. I don’t know how to reset my brain so I can just chill the F out.”

“This is not how I want to behave or how I want to feel going into delivering my baby,” she continues. “Gosh, this is a nightmare.”

However, Otis says she is trying to “stay positive” amid the outbreak.

“I’m trying to meditate. I’m trying to think happy thoughts,” she shares, before taking a deep sigh. “I don’t know how to calm my brain and be just a positive, happy person. I am so fortunate that I am able to stay home and quarantine, and I’m lucky that I have a low-risk pregnancy so I’m able to do a home birth. I know all these things and I’m trying to be thankful for that.”

“I feel very embarrassed,” the mom adds. “I just feel very annoying and a wimp because other women have it so much worse than I do, and here I am whining over just everything.”

Otis ended the clip by apologizing to viewers, telling followers that she’ll “get it together” soon.

Otis told PeopleTV earlier this month that she and Hehner, 36, chose to have a home birth for their son on the way because “the pros outweighed the cons.”

“You learn in nursing school that the safest place is the hospital to have a baby because then they have everything there handy, God forbid  happens last minute,” noted Otis.

Hehner said the couple “did a ton of research” on home birth before making their decision, explaining, “The fact that I may or may not be able to be a support person at the delivery in the hospital what do we do with our daughter if I can’t leave the hospital? At least with our house, we know it’s a more controlled environment.”

Otis has experienced several health-related concerns throughout her pregnancy. The former reality star revealed in December that she had been diagnosed with human papillomavirus (HPV), but would “have to wait to biopsy my cervix until after I have the baby.”

Gallup: Democrats Now Outnumber Republicans By 9 Percentage Points Thanks To Independents

“I think what we have to do as a party is battle the damage to the Democratic brand,” Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison said on The Daily Beast‘s . Gallup reported Wednesday that, at least relatively speaking, the Democratic brand is doing pretty good.

In the first quarter of 2021, 49 percent of U.S. adults identified as Democrats or independents with Democratic leanings, versus 40 percent for Republicans and GOP leaders, Gallup said. “The 9-percentage-point Democratic advantage is the largest Gallup has measured since the fourth quarter of 2012. In recent years, Democratic advantages have typically been between 4 and 6 percentage points.”

New Gallup polling finds that in the first quarter of 2021, an average of 49% of Americans identify with/lean toward the Democratic Party, versus 40 percent for Republicans.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll has found a startling difference between Democrats and Republicans as it relates to COVID-19 vaccination. The poll found that while 86% of Democrats have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot, only 45% of Republicans have.

In addition, the survey found that while only 6% of Democrats said they would probably decline the vaccine, 47% of Republicans said they would probably not be inoculated. 

The poll also found that 60% of unvaccinated Americans believe the U.S. is exaggerating the dangers of the COVID-19 delta variant, while 18% of the unvaccinated say the government is accurately describing the variant’s risks.

However, 64% of vaccinated Americans believe the government is accurately describing the dangers of the delta variant.

Congressional Republicans Moderate Democrats Balk At $35 Trillion Budget

Top congressional Republicans announced their opposition to Democratic leaders’ pursuit of a $3.5 trillion budget plan that would be considered alongside a big-ticket infrastructure package. Separately, a small group of moderate House Democrats took issue with their party’s legislative timeline.

Kevin McCarthy of California, the U.S. House of Representatives’ top Republican, is leading the opposition to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s aim of kicking off an intricate budget process in the chamber. Pelosi scheduled a vote Aug. 23 to begin consideration of the multitrillion dollar budget and infrastructure measures.

“Democrats want to crush hard-working Americans and their families. With prices hitting a 13-year high, Biden’s inflation is wiping away wage gains made during the Trump years. Democrats are determined to make it worse by passing a $3.5 trillion socialist spending binge that will crush families, dismantle our economy, and reshape our country in the worst possible way,” McCarthy said.

A Democrat favors Democratic Liberalism, and a Republican favors a more Conservative Aristocratic Republicanism .

WASHINGTON, Aug 11 – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Wednesday he did not believe Republicans would let the United States default on its debt as the government approaches its borrowing capacity, warning such a lapse would be perilousfor the country.

Dozens of Republicans have signed a pledge not to raise the debt limit, in an effort to curtail Democrats who passed a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill in March and this week floated a $3.5 trillion bill on other spending priorities.

“For Republicans to say they will never do it is typically irresponsible,” House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi told House Democrats, according to a source familiar with their conference call.

Democrats, however, were somewhat more generous in their answers.  More than four in ten Democratic voters   felt that most Republican voters had the country’s best interests at heart .  And many tried their best to answer from the other’s perspective. A 45-year-old male voter from Ohio imagined that as a Republican, he was motivated by Republicans’ “harsh stance on immigration; standing up for the 2nd Amendment; promised tax cuts.”  A 30-year-old woman from Colorado felt that Republican votes reflected the desires to “stop abortion… stop gay marriage from ruining our country… and give us our coal jobs back.”

Other Democrats felt that their opponents were mostly motivated by the GOP’s “opposition to Obamacare,” “lower taxes” and to support a party that “reduced unemployment.” 

Democrats Return The Favor: Republicans Uninformed Or Self

The 429 Democratic voters in our sample returned the favor and raised many of the same themes. Democrats inferred that Republicans must be “VERY ill-informed,” or that “Fox news told me to vote for Republicans.”  Or that Republicans are “uneducated and misguided people guided by what the media is feeding them.”

Many also attributed votes to individual self-interest – whereas GOP voters feel Democrats want “free stuff,” many Democrats believe Republicans think that “I got mine and don’t want the libs to take it away,” or that “some day I will be rich and then I can get the benefits that rich people get now.”

Many used the question to express their anger and outrage at the other side.  Rather than really try to take the position of their opponents, they said things like, “I like a dictatorial system of Government, I’m a racist, I hate non-whites.”

Similarly, a 53-year-old Republican from Virginia said, “I honestly cannot even pretend to be a Democrat and try to come up with anything positive at all, but, I guess they would vote Democrat because they are illegal immigrants and they are promised many benefits to voting for that party. Also, just to follow what others are doing. And third would be just because they hate Trump so much.” The picture she paints of the typical Democratic voter being an immigrant, who goes along with their party or simply hates Trump will seem like a strange caricature to most Democratic voters. But her answer seems to lack the animus of many.  

Democrats struggled just as much as Republicans. A 33-year-old woman from California told said, “i really am going to have a hard time doing this” but then offered that Republicans “are morally right as in values, … going to protect us from terrorest and immigrants, … going to create jobs.”

Of course, there are many differences between 1850 and 2017, so we find elements of both old parties in the modern parties. Consider figures like John McCain and Bernie Sanders. McCain is more classically Republican like Eisenhower while Sanders is more classically Democratic like William Jennings Bryan.

All the complexities of today and yesterday aside, for all our differences, we can see a longstanding unity.

Trends in partisan identification among those with different levels of education have undergone major changes over the last two decades. Less-educated voters – once a strong Democratic bloc – have moved toward the Republican Party, while college graduates have moved toward the Democratic Party.

Jefferson’s original faction, which essentially became the Democrats, was called the Anti-Federalists, as in “Against Big Government Federalism and for States’ Rights.”
