I can’t believe that a) Toby Hadoke read out some of the quotes from Joe Orton’s diary to Frazer Hines and b) this interaction occurred on the publicly-available dvd commentary of The Moonbase
#honestly i was on the edge of my seat listening to them discuss the sloane casting#genuinely thought this was gonna be how i learned whether or not they were allowed to say fuck on dr who dvds for a moment there#the moonbase#second doctor era#i mean the diary's also like a published book so i agree it was fair to assume he'd know about them#but there's knowing someone's probably aware of something and then there's choosing to say it to them yourself lmao#brave man#also unless im mistaken#this might be evidence that they knew the planned underwater menace animation had already fallen thru?#(bc he points out the quotes refer to episodes of underwater menace and faceless ones instead of the moonbase#so i assume him bringing it up now indicates that they didn't think they'd be recording commentary for those stories any time soon?)#which is mainly interesting bc i think they recorded the commentary before the animated episodes were completed -#& that's why there are audio interviews that aren't commentary over ep's 1 & 3 -#but that would mean they'd already axed the menace animation before even completing the one for the moonbase#i guess it just surprises me since they bothered putting them in their menace costumes in the first scene#idk i'll always be curious about why that one never wound up happening#... do you ever stop what you're doing and look at yourself and go wow i really am extremely ace?#bc im pretty sure i just derailed my own post about jamie mccrimmon the sex object into yet another discussion about missing episodes#whoops

What makes Gallifrey One so special? What makes it the hot ticket for Whovians and DWeeks? We are going to give you a general overview about what Gallifrey One is, what you can expect there and tips on how to get your hands on these hard to get tickets!
Gallifrey One is the world’s largest and longest-running annual Doctor Who fan convention. It is a fully non-profit event founded in 1989 by active fans in local Los Angeles science fiction fandom. Gallifrey One boasts some of the best Doctor Who celebrity guests while still maintaining its small con feel. This convention is completely fan run. It features one of kind panels, guest from all walks of science fiction and the non fiction science community, not just the Doctor Who universe. Taking place every February over Presidents’ Day Weekend at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel, this con is an experience not to be missed.
2018 Highlights:
Gally (as it is often called) is one of those cons that have a jammed packed schedule. Programming goes from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm. And even after there are after parties, screenings, dances, masquerades, karaoke events and so much more. There is probably way more that went on at the 2018 event than I could possibly list. I recommend checking out the 2018 Gallifrey One Wrap Up on the convention website. But for now, here are some attendee photos of some of the guest highlights from the con!
The Great Steven Moffat. Showrunner for #DoctorWho, #Sherlock and soon #Dracula. Still highly passionate about his work and at times combative. Struggling mightily against those who might accuse him of writing the same female characters over and over again and promoting a false image of sexism against the first Doctor. An extremely entertaining panel. #whovian #scifi #timelord #tardis #gallifreyone #thedoctor #gally1

Beware when #DavidBradley shows up to your event especially if it’s a wedding. Here at #gallifreyone talking about his experience portraying the first #DoctorWho. No thoughts on #WalderFrey and #GameOfThrones. Spoke about his early days acting and meeting the family of #WillaimHartnell before he portrayed him.   I had the absolute pleasure to shoot with @BigFinishprod writers Matt Fitton and John Dorney while running around #GallifreyOne last weekend. Matt and John were the highlight on the panels they were featured and as you can see above, they brought their unique brand of mirth to these portraits! Be sure to check out their work by supporting #BigFinishProductions and a HUGE THANK YOU to both John and Matt for taking the time to work with me. • • • #mattfitton #johndorney #portraitphotographer #writersofinstagram #bigfinish #portraitphotographer #gally1 #doctorwho

Outside the Con:
The convention is held at the Marriott Los Angeles Airport Hotel. It is just steps from LAX international airport. There are plenty of hotels in the area, as well as a variety of places to eat within walking distance.
  Child Friendly:
This is probably the most child friendly convention I have come across. There is a ton of children’s programming available as well as babysitting available.  Children programming does fill up quickly, so I suggest keeping signing up as soon as the programming is announced. There is a courtyard just outside of the convention floor that gives children some room to run around and wind down a bit. There are plenty of food options available at the convention as well as in the nearby neighborhoods. I was able to find food options for even the pickiest of eaters.
Pros of this Con:
There is so much great programming that there really is something for everyone. There are guest from the audio series, from the comic book creators, there are even guests from other fandoms. If you are interested in cosplay, there are panels on cosplay as well. There are writing workshops, discussion groups, ribbon trading, meet ups of all types. There is a bar and lounge area on the main floor of the hotel that is lovingly referred to as “Lobby Con”.  At this 2018 Convention Steven Moffat and Sylvester McCoy were both spotted in the lobby with fans, interacting and hanging out with fans. The con takes place in the same hotel that many of the guest stay in, so seeing the guest walk around is very common. They are not guarded by security like they are at larger conventions. This gives the convention a more intimate feeling and allows for experiences that would not normally happen at other conventions. One of the benefits of a convention that is specifically geared towards Doctor Who fans is that everyone at the convention is a Doctor Who fan. You are in a safe place to express your total love for Doctor Who. It creates a very welcoming and open environment. You are all there to celebrate the thing that you all have in common. The thing that you all love.

Cons of this Con:
The Vendor/Dealer’s room at Gallifrey One is pretty small compared to most Southern California conventions. It boast only a few rows of vendors. It seems fine for a convention that holds less than 4,000 attendees and despite being small you can still find some truly unique merchandise that you wont find anywhere else, but it would be nice to see an artist alley with a nice variety of Doctor Who art for sale. The con takes place during a holiday weekend and it takes place at the same time as a gaming con in a neighboring hotel. This can make it difficult and pricey to find both room accommodations and parking. If you plan to stay at the hotel from Thursday until Sunday night, be prepared to spend upwards of $800 for the 4 days, 3 night stay.
A fullsize volunteer owned TARDIS on display at the end of the Dealers Room.
Rubber Toe Replica Booth at Gallifrey One 2018
Cosplay:
The Cosplay is pretty top notch at Gallifrey One. The fun thing about cosplay at this convention as opposed to other pop culture conventions, is that because it all centers around one fandom, you find some of the most clever, creative and even obscure cosplays. At any given time you can fins cosplayers portraying characters from all walks of the Doctor Who universe. You can find cosplays from Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Class and even the Big Finish Audio Series (yes, they even cosplay from audio cover art).
Con Costs:
$110.00 Adult Full Weekend $50.00 Teen Full Weekend (Ages 12-16) $20.00 Child Full Weekend (Ages 3-11) Note that the above prices do not include a small EventBrite processing fee, which will be added to each order ($6.22 per adult ticket, less for the others).
Gallifrey One only sells weekend badges. Single day passes are no available.
Parking for locals:
Parking can be reserved in advance  (AND YOU SHOULD). Parking ranges anywhere from $15 a day to $35 a day. General airport parking lots are available within walking distance of the convention. Arriving early is highly recommened.
Hotel Accommodations:
Hotel rooms at the Marriott are in high demand and are filled up almost immediately after reservations open. There are many hotels within walking distance near by.  *See YouTube Video Below*
Pro-tip:
We recommend turning on post notifications for the Gallifrey One Twitter and Facebook accounts so that you stay up to date on hotel announcements, ticket sales, guest announcements and programming information. If you are trying to get tickets or hotel room accommodations on the day they go live, don’t give up on the first sold out screen. try again for the first 20 minutes. Many times the systems just need to refresh and catch up, and you may be able to score the tickets/room that you need.
Overall Impression: It can probably best be explained in this quote from veteran Con-goer and Temple of Geek photographer, Nathaniel Peinado, “Gally isn’t just a convention experience. It’s a family. A yearly reunion, if you will. A chance to see your closest friends that come from distant places, and an opportunity to make new ones. It’s a place where everyone and everything is celebrated and it doesn’t matter if you’re there in an old TARDIS t-shirt or a screen accurate costume. The amount of joy and love you receive from this convention will leave you wishing the next one wasn’t another year away. It’s definitely an experience that makes you believe things really are bigger on the inside.”
My babies ❤

Tag game - Torchwood edition
Tagged by:  @humany-wumany-stuff
Rules: Always post the rules. Answer the 11 random questions posted for you. Create 11 new ones and tag 11 people. Let the person who tagged you know that you answered.
1. When did you start watching Torchwood and what (or who) got you to start watching?
I was actually a bit late to the party, since my personal history with Doctor Who is... complicated (and waaaaay too long to relate here, though I’m happy to share the story if anyone ever gets really bored). The net result is that I didn’t catch up with New Who and, by extension, Torchwood until long after Torchwood had finished its TV run. I think it was 2014, maybe? (Sadly, I’d already been spoiled for most major series events, so I didn’t get to experience the shock and dismay of those who watched when it was new.)
I started watching because yes please, more Captain Jack Harkness, thank you. But I stayed for Ianto Jones.
2. What is your go-to episode to watch when you’re feeling down/bored and why?
You know, I really don’t have that kind of relationship with television. I watch TV so rarely (by which I mean I went for 13 years without even having TV and didn’t miss it), and I have so little free time in my schedule, that I don’t tend to rewatch shows unless I’m 1) showing the series to someone new (which I’ve done with Torchwood) or 2) looking for specific costume references (which I have also done with Torchwood).
That said, I think KKBB probably packs the most pure, shameless entertainment value, so if I really needed a Torchwood fix I’d probably go for that one.
3. Which of the TW villains/aliens/whatevers did you find the scariest and why?
I think Torchwood’s storytelling was at its best when the team wasn’t facing camp alien monsters, but rather dealing with concepts and issues rooted in our reality. Suzie Costello was a decent person, slowly warped into a serial killer by the things she’d seen and done. Out of Time touched on aging and cultural disconnect and loss. Meat was about exploitation. Children of Earth used aliens as a frame to explore political corruption and the abuse of power. Those stories were much darker and stayed with me longer than, say, a poorly-CGed “fairy” with improbable dentition. (Apologies to The Mill, but those effects... weren’t scary at all.)
4. If you had to pick 2 characters to do a BF audio, who would it be and what would it be about?
Ianto Jones and Norton Folgate. Probably having to join forces to save Jack, or something. I don’t even care what the plot is, I just want a full hour of catty insults and cutting dialogue between those two. SO MUCH SASS.
5. What is your favourite fanfic-trope to read/write?
To read? Probably slow burn, but it has to be done really well. I also enjoy emotional H/C, if it’s believable and not just abusing or woobifying the characters.
To write? The pen-dulum (ha!) swings liberally between angst and dry humor/snark. I also have a tendency to get characters into really heated, emotional arguments, possibly because they’re all so stupidly repressed and it’s nice to see them let loose once in a while.
6. If you could assemble your own TW team (post-CoE) with canon characters from the extended Who-niverse (any show related to DW), who would be in it?
So this is basically just a list of all my favorite companions, right?
Core Modern-Day Team:
Martha Jones - brilliant medic; worked for UNIT; saved the world a few times. Won’t take guff from anyone.
River Song - Jack’s equal in every way, only far more likely to shoot you. Tolerates even less nonsense than Martha.
Zoe Heriot - super genius from the future who can calculate pretty much any mathematical solution in her head faster than a computer. Adorably perky, but not afraid to hit bad guys over the head.
Sara Kingdom - by-the-book former Space Security officer. The one who would constantly be reminding Jack that he’s in violation of Torchwood code #439.27 subsection A. Also handy with a blaster.
Ianto Jones - because of course he’s still around, why wouldn’t he be?
Victorian Team:
The Paternoster Gang (Lady Vastra, Jenny, and Strax) - They’re pretty much doing Torchwood’s job for them already. so why not?
Jamie McCrimmon - 18th-century Highlander. Only barred from the main team because if Jack actually had a young, athletic, kilt-wearing man on his regular team, he’d never get ANYTHING accomplished (also, Ianto would probably have to intervene due to Olympic levels of workplace sexual harassment).
Consultant:
Sarah Jane Smith and K-9 - journalist-turned-suburban-mom who still saves the world on a weekly basis, and her robot dog. She doesn’t really approve of Torchwood (that’s actually canon!), but helps out when they need it.
7. A question you would like to ask the actors on a panel (assume they are all present :p)
Since we know that the storylines and character arcs were often in flux as the series was being written, what grounding concept or idea allowed you to keep your character’s portrayal consistent throughout the series?
8. If there was another season and they would do a crossover with any show/movie/book/whatever of your choosing for 1 episode, what would it be and why?
This is a little bit cracked, but someone recently posted about a Dirk Gently/Torchwood crossover, and I think, with enough suspension of disbelief, there’s actually some potential there. I mean, except for the conflict of Samuel Barnett being in both series. (Though I could see some good material there, too...)
Apart from that, it’s already been, er, “established” that Sherlock and Doctor Who/Torchwood exist in the same universe (oh, Arwel Wyn Jones, did you know the chaos you were unleashing?), so... why not?
9. If you were to find out tomorrow that Torchwood is real and Jack is leading a Torchwood team in your home city, how would you convince him to let you join them?
Oh, man. Would I want to? I mean, what are my odds of survival?
I am (among other things) a professional animal trainer with some certification letters after my name, so I would probably just point out that they really need someone to train their pteranodon so it stops eating livestock and pooping on all the war memorials.
10. How would you recast the original Torchwood team? (Jack, Owen, Tosh, Ianto and Gwen)
Hmm, I’m not sure I would. The characters are so closely tied to the actors in my mind, I can’t picture anyone else playing them. I can only come up with alternate faces if we port it completely out of context. So here’s my completely ridiculous Golden Age of Hollywood Torchwood cast:
Jack - Errol Flynn (dat jawline, yo)
Owen - James Cagney
Gwen - Barbara Stanwyck
Ianto - Marlon Brando (young Brando. Not Jor-El.)
Tosh - Miiko Taka? (This is a hard one to cast in that era, because Toshiko’s Japanese heritage is so significant to her character, but there were so few headlining Asian actresses during the GAoH. Or... well, even today, for that matter.)
11. If you could pick any author to write a Torchwood novel, who would it be and why?
Are we excluding fanfic writers? Because if we’re going to talk novel-length Torchwood stories, I could name a few that are more consistent and true to character than the official ones... *sidelong glance at @gmariam321*
But while we’re dreaming of impossible things, how about Douglas Adams? He wrote for Doctor Who, and his own books spanned the bizarre (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and the tragic (Last Chance to See), so I think he would bring an interesting perspective to a bunch of alien hunters trying to save the world from their glorified sewer in Cardiff.
Also, potential sofa cameos.
In all honesty, I was going to do the 11-new-questions-and-tag-people thing, but it’s now 4:59 a.m. (ZOMG1 what am I still doing awake at this hour?!) and I really, really need to turn off the computer instead of thinking up creative new asks. So I’ll just open this up to anyone who hasn’t yet been tagged and offer them the same questions @humany-wumany-stuff posed!

For the Doctor who ask meme numbers 2 and 8?
2. Top 3 companions
This list usually changes, except for my Number 1 spot. In fact I think I answered this same question last time I did this meme so it might be a different order to that.
Number 3: Jo Grant - I have a real soft spot for Jo. She’s the companion I identify with the most. She’s not very bright, has poor eyesight (or at least Katy does, I headcanon Jo did as well but UNIT gave her contact lenses), is a bit of a clutz, yet does have skills that come in needed like her escapology and some level of trained self-defence. She’s also just incredibly adorable and I think she gets a bit unfairly overshadowed by Liz and Sarah Jane, who are both awesome but Jo often gets called a ‘weak female character’ in comparison to them and I really don’t see it. Just because someone isn’t super smart or always assertive doesn’t make them ‘weak’ - and Jo had a lot of courage, and while she wasn’t avert in pushing feminism as Sarah Jane, she rarely paid attention to the male characters telling her to stay put and be a good girl, including the slightly sexist Three. She’s the only companion in Classic Who to save the world TWICE by offering to sacrifice herself.  Even the Master seemed fond of her!
Number 2: Jamie McCrimmon - For very similar reasons as Jo but I won’t go into too much depth because Jamie is already a popular companion. Like Jo he’s not very bright but it’s mainly due to the era he’s from and put in contrast to the Doctor and then Zoe. He’s clever in other areas and always brave. Out of all the male companions the Doctor has had on the show, he’s the only one who never felt like a rival for ‘alpha TARDIS male’. They were best friends all the way through and Jamie always had the Doctor’s back. All the Two and Jamie clinging helps as well!
Number 1: Donna Noble. Always Donna. Much like Jo, I can relate to Donna a lot but for different reasons. Drifting through life, not sure what to do, going from temporary job to another to make ends meat, wishing for adventure but needing someone to give you that push and be there with you. And once she’s out there, among the stars, she drives so much of the story and tries to help as many people as she can, while not being afraid to shout down those who are in the wrong. The relationship with her mother was interesting as well, I much preferred Sylvia as a character over Jackie or Francine, there was a lot more layers there, both resentment and disappointment but still with a loving foundation there. And her relationship with her gramps, Wilf, was adorable. But the main relationship was her with Ten and for me that just made Series 4 and, best of all, made me really enjoy Ten. I thought she brought out the best in him so much more than Rose or Martha or any character during the Specials (even Wilf). For reasons I’m not sure, because I adore David Tennant, I just couldn’t warm to his Doctor in the first two series…maybe I was a bitter Nine fan, I dunno, but when he was with Donna it was like they were a complete. They really were the DoctorDonna.
Honorable mention: the Brigadier. Never sure whether to count him as a companion but I adore him so much. Vastra, Jenny and Strax are also fun non-companions. Also Bill was so close to making my list and probably would have if she had stayed around for another series to give her more development and go into the stuff with her and her foster mum.
8. OTPS?
The Doctor/TARDIS. Honestly I feel like it’s the only One True Pairing this show can have as they are the only two ‘characters’ who are an eternal part of the show. As much as I might want some companions to stay forever, they just can’t. I know that doesn’t get in the way of everyones ships but it is a distraction for me. But honestly this was solidified in the beautiful episode The Doctor’s Wife which is one of my favourite episodes of Moffat’s era, even if I feel it’s a subject which would have been better explored in a longer, anniversary special (think Zagreus but…less crazy and shorter).
I know I always make Doctor x Master references, and I do honestly think there is a deep love between them beneath the hatred, at the same time I think too much has gone on and the Master CONSTANTLY keeps doing these horribly evil things that go against everything the Doctor stands for, which even after Missy’s fate I’m certain s/he will do again because the show just always needs to have the Master be the Doctor’s ‘Moriarty’ to his Holmes. I could be wrong, it depends if Chibs decides to bring the Master back, and if there is hope for redemption. I would like to think so.
Doctor/Companion ships are something I enjoy more for fun but never really a serious ‘OTP’ thing. My closest to that would be Two/Jamie, Three/Jo, Four/Romana, Eight/Charley and Nine/Rose/Jack. Not a fan of the River Song arc, sorry. Tegan/Nyssa and Bill/Heather were precious, the latter obviously being beautifully explicit. Ian/Barbara is the best developed companion-character romance in my opinion of the show. I am still a heartbroken Janto fan, even though that’s Torchwood. Also I shipped the hell out of Orcini and Bostock in Revelation of the Daleks - now those two should have got a BF spin-off!

Valentines Day companion speed-dating fics. Fic 3
Jamie and Amy requested by @sushigal007
..
Ding. An apprehensive Jamie sat down at the table opposite a red-haired beauty that was looking at him, grinning.
The woman smiled, checking him over as he made himself comfortable. “Oh yeah I’m digging the kilt, I’m giving you a ten already!”
Jamie was elated as soon as he heard her accent. “You’re from Scotland too? Finally someone from my part of the world! I was starting to think the whole universe was made of wee English folk. The name’s Jamie, Jamie McCrimmon.”
She cackled. “I’m Pond, Amy Pond. So, what brings you speed dating then, Jamie?” she said as she leaned forward across the table, her chin rested on her hands.
Jamie was about to reply when he noticed something sparkling on Amy’s finger. “Now hang on a minute here, I think I may have my wires crossed or something but my friend told me all about lassies having rings on that finger when they got wed.”
“Oh.” Amy looked down at her wedding ring. “I’m separated.”
“Aye, it can be hard to be away from loved ones but I’m not sure going on dates is the answer.”
“No I don’t mean we’re ‘far away’ separated, I mean we’ve split up.”
“Oh.” Jamie’s face fell. He wasn’t sure how to console a woman when she looked sad and clearly seemed to be on the date to feel better. He assumed it was something Zoe had referred to as ‘a rebound’ once when she’d explained practises of future dating. “Well, I hope he knows what he’s missing, this ex-lad of yours.”
“I didn’t come here to talk about Rory. I came here to flirt with a sexy man. Preferably one in a kilt.”
Jamie’s cheeks blushed. “Oh I see, well, whatever ye need to do to move on, I’m happy to oblige.”
For the next couple of minutes, they laughed and joked and shared stories about their homes in Scotland. When the bell finally rang, they were both disappointed their conversation had to come to an abrupt end.
“Well it was nice meeting you, Amy. I hope this wee bit of flirting put the colour back into your cheeks and a passion into your heart.”
Amy smiled. “It did, thank you, Jamie. Stay cool yeah?”
He nodded and waved goodbye. As he left the table he glanced at Amy’s long legs under the table and began to wonder whether it was he or she who had the better pins.
