Throwback Video
This was one of my favorite and best sci-fi films of the 2010’s. Probably one of the best films of the 2010’s also.
Since it’s having its 10th anniversary this month (or so) I wanted to throwback to it. A real low budget scifi wonder that gets into the some real mind bending stuff on a small budget.
Also a sequel was finally announced and I’m really excited for that. Not sure it can live up to this but who cares cause this is a genuine great sci-fi movie.

Jack Griffin with Principal Durbin from AP Bio at SXSW23
Apparently, Patton Oswalt was moderating a panel for an old movie called Coherence (2013) directed by the guy on the left, James Ward Byrkit, at SXSW 2023 — and we know Glenn was at the festival for the North American premiere of his Blackberry movie.
James and Patton were there mainly because they had a new show called Shatter Belt premiering at the event.

Coherence (2013)
Coherence is a science-fiction movie for those who like to think. You’ll have difficulty wrapping your mind around the story unless you really pay attention and when you do, get ready to be scared. It isn't gory, there aren't any jump scares or anything like that. It's that the film explores an aspect of human nature that'll put you on edge. Writer/director James Ward Byrkit demands your full attention and rewards you for it.
During a dinner party, Emily (Emily Baldoni) and her friends experience a power outage as a comet flies overhead. After turning on the auxiliary generator, they notice another house nearby also has lights on. Inside, they discover duplicate versions of themselves.
The premise is simple. What would you do if you met a copy of yourself? Would you trust them? What does it say about you if you wouldn't? Can you be sure they would trust you? Who’s to say this duplicate version of yourself, simply by walking up to you/being approached by you, wouldn't have already started becoming a different person? I can already hear your mind racing. Now picture the scenario with eight people in total. As Emily, Kevin (Maury Sterling), Mike (Nicholas Brendon), Lee (Lorene Scafaria), Hugh (Hugo Armstrong), Beth (Elizabeth Gracen), Amir (Alex Manugian) and Laurie (Lauren Maher) come to grips with what is happening, their true selves start to shine through. Who panics? Who stays cool? Who does everyone turn on? Who do people trust? You never know how anyone will react or where the plot is going. That’s the intrigue you get when you encounter a scenario this crazy. Who knows what’s next?
What we have here is the kind of film you’d love to go back to with a pencil and pad of paper to map out where everyone begins and where they end. On your first ride, you’ll be swept up in the paranoia, claustrophobia and the dread created by the characters’ assumptions and decisions. You'll worry too much about the here and now to think about the true implications of what is happening but once you seen the whole thing, you'll be itching to re-examine all the puzzle pieces and see if they fit as hermitically as they seem to – trust me, they do. If you think you know where things are going, you don't. There are many juicy twists and turns coming. That second viewing might also allow you to notice the cast, which all play off each other wonderfully.
Coherence shows how much work a robust idea can do. It’s ingenious and inventive. You’ll be gripped… and the whole film is basically set in one house with minimal special effects. That proves to be one of its strength because – and I’m starting to repeat myself – the core is so good. There are so many different directions this setup could’ve taken, and so many different tones too! I could easily see someone taking this premise and going for a comedic or romantic drama story instead and that makes it great fun. (October 12, 2018)

COHERENCE (2013) Grade: B-
Felt like a classic sci-fi plot, like a classic Star Trek episode, just a level darker. Clever twist and ending. Got a little slow in the 2nd act. It's low budget but well produced.

October 8th: Psychological Horror | Coherence
Coherence was released in 2013 and was directed by James Ward Byrkit. Em (played by Emily Baldoni) is at a dinner party with a group of her friends on the night Miller's Comet is going to pass over the earth. The night seems normal at first, with only a few mishaps of mysteriously broken phones and the power going out. But as time goes on the group finds themselves in a similar position to Schrodinger's cat as they are caught in a state of paranoia and confusion at the hands of themselves.
Coherence's psychological horror is deeply routed in a feel of reality that is heightened by almost an exclusive use of handheld shots, very little music, and a setting that many can see as familiar. It had a very low budget and is comprised of a dialog that is primarily improvised, with the only guide the actors having being a short paragraph that showed their character's "goals". These aspects, combined with a mind-bending premises, help to make this movie feel raw and almost scarily natural, which in turn makes the situation the main character's find themselves in that more captivating. Despite Coherence mainly going under the radar, it exceeds in encapsulating the audience with it's unique production and incredible plot twist.
It can be watched for free on PLEX, Pluto TV, Peacock, and Tubi
Content Warnings for the Film (may contain spoilers): violence, adultery (mentioned), drug usage (we see it being put in a syringe, but never injected. It was also consensually put in someone's drink), slight flashing lights in the final part of the movie
#starting off strong with Coherence!#goddamn this movie would be horrifying to watch high I'll have to do that one day#definitely go into this movie as blind as possible trust me it's a ride#meso's movies#coherence

Coherence (2013) - James Ward Byrkit
“What if we’re the dark version?”
Coherence is the best example that plot trumps budget. Although the setting and the characters were limited, its concept was immeasurably thought provoking. Homey and eerie: a deadly combination.
Coherence is one of the films that laid a mark on the “gatherings gone wrong” genre. Similar to The Invitation (2015), a group of friends host a dinner, but at the same time as a comet event. This comet event distorts space and time causing doppelgängers, parallel universe, and madness.
The film is an example of how situations can turn us into different people. When we decide we are “good” or “bad”, it is simply relative to what we know about ourselves already. As life is fragile, so too are we.
