Sega Mega Drive - James Pond 2 Codename Robocod
Title: James Pond 2 Codename Robocod / ジェームスポンドII コードネーム・ロボコッド
Developer: Millennium Interactive / Vectordean
Publisher: Electronic Arts Victor
Release date: 9 June 1993
Catalogue No.: EM20015
Genre: Platform Action
Tumblr media
The Mega Drive was home to various Amiga ports, and James Pond 2 is no exception. A sequel to James Pond Underwater Agent; and it is a prequel to James Pond 3 Operation STARFI5H. Looks superb, sounds great, and plays like a platform gamer's dream. Add the fact that the gameplay constantly throws out new challenges and surprises for the player to cope with and you have one of many definitive Mega Drive platformers. The Japanese Mega Drive version has a different title screen borrowed from the Super Famicom version (the western title screen is a bit basic by comparison), and this is one of few examples where a Mega Drive game came with a spine card.

Mega Drive UK #1 Games: 1992
Data gathered from Mean Machines/Mean Machines Sega magazines. Note: due to print lead times, the obvious #1 from late 1992 doesn’t show up until 1993. I know. But without reliable information connecting the charts to an actual sales period, mag publication dates are the best I’ve got.
Quackshot Starring Donald Duck Due to the lead times involved in print, this would have been the strong seller over the Christmas period, which makes sense - platform games starring famous characters, right?. I always forget how well this reviewed, too - it’s crazy to think that Disney games were pretty great as a rule once upon a time. Two months at #1, dropping to #2 for two months before reclaiming the top spot.
James Pond II: Codename Robocod Hey look, another cutesy platformer! This one feels like a market peculiarity - although it reviewed well, the momentum came from a big multi-platform launch that took in the 16-bit computers as well as the Mega Drive. That said, having EA’s backing didn’t hurt, nor did a Penguin biscuit tie-in. Amazingly, this would later go on to be a best-seller on PS1 circa 2003. This spent two months at #1.
Desert Strike Although it’s easy to question the taste of this isometric helicopter shooter in the aftermath of the Gulf War, it’s hard to deny that the game was good. The open-ended mission structure was unusual at the time, and allowed for some pretty daring approaches by seasoned players. This claimed the top spot for three straight months, and made top 10 comebacks for well over two years.
Taz-Mania Another month, another cute platform game. This is another one that I forget reviewed well, probably because I had a Master System at the time and that version was less well regarded. Looking back, it’s pretty chaotic and gets away with it by having a forgiving lifebar. This one only managed to claim the top spot for a month, but hung around the top 10 for another five months afterwards.
European Club Soccer Hey, look - the first half-way decent football game on the Mega Drive racks up a #1, no doubt buoyed by Euro 1992 (despite featuring club teams). This is the worst reviewed #1 of the year by some way, and only stayed at #1 for a month. Still, it somehow made periodic chart appearances up until FIFA finally killed it, and remained a “mediocre bundled game” staple for the console’s whole life.
Alien 3 So here’s a weird one. Alien 3 was a dud film, and the licensed game arrived so late you’d think it would suffer by association. However, the game - a rock hard run-and-gun - turned out so well that it became a hit in spite of the tie-in. This spent two months at #1, which was its realistic ceiling due to the impending release of Sonic 2, but only survived in the top ten for one month after that.
