TPC S2 E11 - Bargain-Bin Blockbusters And up finally to take on the category of commercial flop that should not have been is Kimbo and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) The Facts: IMDb - 6.9/10 Rotten Tomatoes -47% Metacritic - 52% Budget - 178 Million USD Box office - 543.9 Million USD Critics Reviews: Ignatiy Vishnevetsky of The A.V. Club commented, "Much of what makes X-Men: Apocalypse legitimately interesting also makes it frustrating and lopsided, since Singer and screenwriter-producer Simon Kinberg remain committed to the structure of an overlong comic-book blockbuster, complete with a climax in which the world has to be saved using as many different colors of energy beam as possible." Scott Mendelson of Forbes wrote, "X-Men: Apocalypse is the kind of weightless, soulless trifle of a bore that makes comic book superhero movies look bad and makes me not look forward to the next installment." Helen O'Hara of Empire criticized the performances of the main cast and stated that the film felt "messier and heavier than Days of Future Past." On the other hand, Mick LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle gave the film a positive review, calling it "a thinking person's action movie" and complimenting its high stakes. Richard Roeper called the film "a visual feast" and lauded its cast, saying "Even the hardcore geeks who like to get their Comic-Con on, might be feeling a little superhero fatigue right about now. Still. You owe it to yourself to see Quicksilver do his thing." 3 Reasons You Should Watch... TPC S2 E11 - Bargain-Bin Blockbusters Up next, Straughan Male and his hot take on the category of commercial flop that should not have been, he presents - Mallrats (1995) The Facts: IMDb - 7.1/10 Rotten Tomatoes -57% Budget - 6.1 Million USD Box office - 2.123 Million USD Critics Reviews: The film grossed $400,000 on its Friday gross on 800 screens. That's just $500 per screen. It made $1.2 million its opening weekend, and grossed $2,122,561 at the box office. Mallrats was the subject of much critical derision when it was released, with many critics comparing it unfavorably to Smith's first film, Clerks. In his review of the film, critic Roger Ebert gave the film 1 1/2 stars out of 4 and said "Before Mallrats was released, I chaired a panel that Smith participated in and Kevin Smith cheerfully said he'd be happy to do whatever the studios wanted, if they'd pay for his films. At the time, I thought he was joking." Despite the heat it took at the time, the film has gone on to be a cult classic with a huge following. It basically glowed up. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes lists a 57% positive rating for Mallrats based on 46 reviews. The site's critics consensus reads: "Mallrats colorfully expands the View Askewniverse, even if its snootchie has lost a few of the bootchies boasted by its beloved predecessor." 3 Reasons You Should Watch... Mallrats, by Straughan Male: * See the Stan Lee cameo that gets referenced in Captain Marvel, and pop-culture references galore * Smith beginners can start their journey through the View Askewniverse at its chronological begining * You will lose many happy hours laughing and referencing the movie once you've seen it - It's instantly quotable. To hear Straughan Male was lyrical about how underrated a movie for Mallrats was (at the time of release anyway) and why you should commit to giving it a watch, click the link below or find us on Spotify! -TPC https://shows.acast.com/namachal-productions/episodes/tpc-17-bargain-bin-blockbusters #TPC #trainpopculture #podcast #movies #cinema #underrated #flopsthatshouldhavebeenhuge #mallrats #kevinsmith #jayandsilentbob #itfoundloveeventually #snoochieboochies https://www.instagram.com/p/CIB0k16JmoU/?igshid=tk5kgdbjt290

TPC S2 E11 - Bargain-Bin Blockbusters First up, Johnson provides his hot take on a commercial flop that he feels shouldn't have been: Waterworld (1995) The Facts: IMDb - 6.2/10 Rotten Tomatoes -46% Metacritic - 56/100 Budget - 175 Million USD Box office -264.2 Million USD Critics Reviews: Contemporary reviews for the film were mixed. Roger Ebert gave Waterworld 2.5 stars out of 4 and Owen Gleiberman gave it a B in Entertainment Weekly. Gleiberman commented that while its massive budget had paid off by genuinely creating the sensation of a world built on water, the film generally came off as a second-rate rip-off of The Road Warrior, with weaker, slower-paced action sequences and less startling villains. He praised Costner's performance, but found the film's environmental message pretentious. A train of thought fairly common with Waterworld. In a 2020 retrospective, Ben Child of The Guardian described it as "a perfectly watchable sci-fi cult classic" that deserves reappraisal. He acknowledged that much of the plot was illogical and absurd and some of the action set-pieces "preposterously ambitious", but argued that both of them offer excitement and B-movie charm. 3 Reasons You Should Watch... Waterworld, by Johnson: * It's well acted * Brilliant choreography * Great world building For a fuller picture of what makes Waterworld an underrated movie for Johnson and why you should give it a chance, click the link below or find us on Spotify! -TPC https://shows.acast.com/namachal-productions/episodes/tpc-17-bargain-bin-blockbusters #TPC #trainpopculture #podcast #movies #cinema #underrated #flopsthatshouldhavebeenhuge #waterworld #kevincostner https://www.instagram.com/p/CH50DBMp_pZ/?igshid=1spqee10u16zl

TPC S2 E10 - The Rise of the Remake: Part Two - Pointless Princesses and Evil Glass Slippers So what did we think? After a little meander into picking holes with the footware (not to kink-shame) and ruining people's childhood memories of Cinderella, we did make it to opinions. Kimbo hit us with facts, which supported the overall consensus that it's just a bit... average. To quote the self proclaimed "least valued member of the podcast"- It's fine. It's just another Cinderella. And that's the problem, it offers nothing deeply or significantly new. But, at least the Prince recognised her face this time. It should've been breathtaking and it left us puffing out a sigh of 'meh'. It's perfectly lovely, but in accordance with the rules set, although Kimbo does make valid points if we're being strict on it, the overall vibe and majority suggests it doesn't really deserves to exist. But what was your hot take? TPC S2 E10 - The Rise of the Remake: Part Two - Pointless Princesses and Evil Glass Slippers Which brings us to the Live Action Remake, the 2015 adaptation. It features Lily James as Cinderella, and includes Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Stellan Skarsgård, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi, and Helena Bonham Carter. Cinderella had its world premiere on February 13, 2015, at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival and was released theatrically in the United States on March 13, 2015, and in the United Kingdom on March 27 in standard and IMAX formats by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It grossed over $542 million worldwide, becoming Branagh's highest-grossing film to date as a director. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with many praising the performances (particularly James, Blanchett, and Bonham Carter), Branagh's direction, musical score, costume design, production values, and faithfulness to the original animated film. It received a nomination at the 88th Academy Awards, 21st Critics' Choice Awards and 69th British Academy Film Awards, all for costume design. But what did we think? We're we hyped for this remake? TPC S2 E10 - The Rise of the Remake: Part Two - Pointless Princesses and Evil Glass Slippers Our views on the 1950s animated Cinderella? Overall we feel it is a perfectly nice movie, Cinderella has a little more substance than some other Disney Princesses, the animals are fun, engaging and entertaining. Is it any of the TPC four's favourite? No. But is it a bad film? Also no. Setting none of our souls on fire, but neither did it fill us with disappointment or rage. It's just...nice. Even if the overall moral of the story appears to be as flimsy as 'be nice...and if the opportunity presents, get your glad rags on and throw some shapes -you might land a fella!...even if he can't recall what you look like in the morning' Arguably we were not the target demographic however. What did you think of Cinderella? Did it fill you with joy and whimsy, or were you left feeling like the pumpkin at 12:01? TPC S2 E10 - The Rise of the Remake: Part Two - Pointless Princesses and Evil Glass Slippers Bibbidi-bobbidi-back the fuck up - Another contender enters the debate... Cinderella Vs Cinderella Cinderella was the 12th Disney animated feature film, and released in 1950 . During the mid to late 1940s, Walt Disney Productions had suffered financially after losing connections to the European film markets due to the outbreak of World War II, the studio was over $4 million in debt and was on the verge of bankruptcy. Walt Disney and his animators returned to feature film production in 1948, and after two years in production, Cinderella was released by RKO Radio Pictures on February 15, 1950. It became the greatest critical and commercial hit for the Disney studio since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Dumbo (1941), and helped reverse the studio's fortunes. It received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Music, Original Song for "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo". By the end of its original run, it had earned nearly $4.28 million in North American distributor rentals which made it the fifth highest-grossing film released in North America in 1950. It was the fifth most popular movie at the British box office in 1951. Where financially successful and generally well received as a whole, the characterization of Cinderella received a mixed reception, an example from Variety who claimed the film found "more success in projecting the lower animals than in its central character, Cinderella, who is on the colorless, doll-faced side, as is the Prince Charming." This aside, Cinderella provided what would become a global phenomenon with a happily ever after when on the brink of collapse, and may well be the foundation for many years In 2018, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". -TPC https://shows.acast.com/namachal-productions/episodes/tpc-10-the-podcast-of-evil-glass-slippers #trainpopculture #TPC #podcast #remakes #disney #sleepingbeauty #pointlessprincess #maleficent #phrasing #mistressofevil #cinderella #getinvolved https://www.instagram.com/p/CHi98ThlJeU/?igshid=1lwpv05fsmlma
