Power of the Dream Inspires, Educates and Pumps up the WNBA's Activism
Dawn Porter has done it again! This time, she cinematically captures the awesome courage of the WNBA https://wp.me/p2v8yf-6vC #WNBA #powerofthedream #primevideo
Imagine being exposed to your first group of women of color ball players in Australia who shared their joys, frustrations and accomplishments with me about playing ball.  How wonderful is it for a whole new generation to be aspired and inspired women who are athletic, intelligent and not afraid to break barriers one hoop at a time.  But, nothing could prepare me for the WNBA  activism and power…

This is Judge Peter Cahill. A few months ago, he released Jamel Hill-Moore (41) back onto the streets.
Hill-Moore was sentenced to 21 months in prison over domestic abuse, but this judge granted him a stay.
Last week, Hill-Moore stabbed and kiIIed Meredith Martell in her bed.
Judge Peter Cahill is the same judge who sentenced Derek Chauvin to 22.5 years.
Below is he is pictured. He admitted that his rulings are all guided by racial justice…

Quote
As UNC–Chapel Hill Professor Emeritus Donald G. Mathews writes in the Journal of Southern Religion, “Religion permeated communal lynching because the act occurred within the context of a sacred order designed to sustain holiness.” The “sacred order” was white supremacy and the “holiness” was white virtue
Donald Mathews quoted by Jamelle Bouie at Slate (2015). Christian SoldiersThe lynching and torture of blacks in the Jim Crow South weren’t just acts of racism. They were religious rituals.

The Current Case of YNW Melly
By Juan Cruz, California State University Dominguez Hills Class of 2024
August 10, 2023
Tumblr media
This year's most talked about criminal case has been the trial of YNW Melly. YNW Melly, whose real name is Jamell Demons, faces multiple charges of allegedly shooting and murdering both his friends and fellow rappers, Anthony Williams (YNW Sakchaser) and Christopher Thomas Jr. (YNW Juvy) in October 2018 alongside his colleague Cortlen Henry (YNW Bortlen). 1 Both he and Henry were given first-degree murder charges in February of 2019; Melly pleaded not guilty in March 2019. 2 Henry did not plead guilty, but he is set to be tried separately for two counts of premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of being an accessory to murder by the same judge presiding YNW Melly case, Broward County Circuit Judge John Murphy. 3
The trial started just shy of 2 months ago as of writing on Monday, June 12, 2023, in the Broward County court for the deaths of his alleged friends that were mentioned earlier along with the jury being shown footage of Melly, Bortlen, and two other men that Melly and Bortlen murdered allegedly while leaving the recording studio before the shooting. The trial started with the alleged involvement of Fredo Bang (Frederick Givens) in a court statement in which Fredo Bang picked up Melly in a vehicle after Melly allegedly committed the double homicide on his friends. Prosecutor Kristine Bradley states in her opening statement that Melly was on the road around 4 am when Melly gave his current location via drop pin to Mr. Givens, who’s involved in the music industry, asking to be picked up after the alleged homicide. Mr. Givens before the trial through his attorney stated that he doesn’t intend to cooperate with the prosecution of this case. 4
The following day, the jury was given more surveillance footage from both inside and outside the studio. After a break in the morning, the jury was given 65 photographs of the crime scene that mainly evolved around a blue Jeep Compass that the state is claiming both Melly and Bortlen used in the drive-by shooting. More photos were shown to the courtroom with one showing a bright yellow jacket with red blood stains. These photos were provided by crime scene investigator, Kristopher Carter, who took all the photos that were shown in the courtroom. 5
Melly’s defense started the process of cross-examination into Kristopher Carter and 14 items that were found in the vehicle along with securing a slew of admissions from the state’s witness. 6 Cross-examination is the process of ensuring accuracy and completeness of the testimony along with shedding light on the credibility of direct testimony and bringing out more facts with probable value. 7 The defense wants to question the investigator and the witness about the direct examination and verify the allegations along with having witnesses say something that will help their side. Carter answered the cross-examination questions by admitting freely that he processed the vehicle at 2:57 pm and concluded at 9:31 pm on that day. The cross-examination investigated if any law enforcement officer looked for DNA or fingerprints and if anyone touched any contents of the vehicle. Carter went on to state that he used a few pair of gloves during his thorough search of the Jeep from the front to back. He alleges that he was unaware of any other LEOs, detectives, or investigators going back to the vehicle after Carter concluded his work. 8
Some back and forth later occurred between Melly’s defense team and Carter on the visibility of latent fingerprints and if it can be seen “to the naked eye”. The defense pushed to prove that visual aids do not mean it is visible to the naked eye. Carter noted to the defense team that he doesn’t compare fingerprints himself personally. During the re-direct, Carter discussed the latent fingerprints with the prosecution and how he picks and chooses on what to swab for DNA. He testified to the defense that he never reviewed the surveillance footage prior to swabbing or doing any investigative work in the Jeep. 9
Tara Carrol was the second investigator that was with Carter working to process the car thoroughly and took 14 hours to complete their work. They found ”an empty tea bottle, a crumpled and empty water bottle, a small bottle of Sutter Home wine, gold teeth, a cell phone, shoes, spent bullets, and a small canister of marijuana – which was initially described as a “green, leafy substance.” 10 Melly defense stipulated that while the green leafy substance is marijuana; they wanted to object to it on relevance grounds. This defense was accepted by the state and the jury was notified about the substance by the court.
Some time passed during the cross examination of Tara Carrol, she answered during the affirmative about the risk of cross-contamination of not change latex gloves between picking up items. The defense elicited the admission from Carrol as she stated that she couldn’t recall switching out gloves between various bottles. She however, states that she made sure to switch gloves at any time she needed to move from different parts of the Jeep. 11 She even stated that the glass was not of high interest in “maintaining the sterility” as it was not being tested for DNA. She testifies that she swabbed 15 items from the Jeep one day and another 5 at a later date from the same Jeep; making sure to change her gloves during each swab. 12
As publicized before, the trial ended in a mistrial with the jury unable to come with a final decision on Melly’s two murder charges after three days of deliberation. This caused the judge to call for a mistrial. 13 The mistrial does not mean Melly is free but rather the state will try for a new trial. The state of Florida has 90 days to bring the case back up to trial. The state’s attorney’s office can still strike a deal in the meantime. They are currently seeking to get a death penalty sentence to Melly and with the new Florida law, it will only require a 8-4 vote with the jury. The case is still developing and nothing is certain on what will happen for a while. 14

Late night read — re: Brittney Griner, The Atlantic
The US gov should do everything in their power to get Brittney Griner out of Russia! Every fucking thing. It’s disgusting how badly they treat the women playing for their country’s teams from Basketball to Soccer! It’s a fucking travesty and I hope that Brittney is holding on and doing the best she can to stay sane over there.
Important late night read and great reporting from Jamele Hill!
