.. in Allahabad .. perhaps a first conscious moment of what a photograph means for me .. never ever thought it would become a life line - pictures !! that bush shirt was special .. very ahead of all the fashion in those days .. but Ma had it made .. her aesthetics were always supreme !

The making of a pure pashmina shawl begins in the Changtang area of Ladakh, India a remote and barren landscape 17000ft above sea level and home to the Lena Rama goat also known as the Pashmina goat. Twice a year the under belly of the goat is combed and the hair which is extremely sort after and expensive is traded in Leh and Srinagar. 

 The pashmina fibres are distributed to women in Srinagar and villages in the Vale of Kashmir who are renowned for their ablity to spin these incredible fine, short fibres. This is a skill that has been passed down from mother to daughter over generations and in these traditional Kashmiri homes the spinning wheel will be brought out after dinner or during a quiet moment in the afternoon. It takes approximately 25 days to spin enough yarn to make one shawl (weighing approximately 250g). 

 The pashmina yarn is taken to weavers, skilled craftsmen who work at old foot powered looms in the roofs of their houses. The loom is set up with 2,200 warp threads for a Pashmina Shawl and over the next 10 days 100,000 wafts will be added to create the shawl. Due to the fineness of the threads it is a slow process which can only be done by hand on foot powered looms as it is frequently necessary to ‘re knot any breakage in the weft by twisting the ends together. The finished product is a completely handcrafted and incredibly fine pashmina shawl. 

 The shawl is now ready to be washed and pressed ready for sale in the natural colour or dyed if required or taken onto the next stage to be hand embroidered by master craftsmen. 

 Kashmir is renowned for its exquisite, fine hand embroidered Pashmina shawls. The art of fine hand embroidery had been passed down through 7 generations since the time of the Murghal Empire and is practised traditionally by men. The pattern will be applied to the plain shawl using wood blocks and a vegetable ink that easily washes out. Then the master craftsman will begin the art of hand embroidery working in one colour at a time using silk threads traditionally from Kashmir. A short needle is used and the fabric tension is held in the hand rather than using a frame. Each thread is left unknotted but is secured by additional threads crossing over. Some of these patterns completely cover the shawl and are called Jamawar shawls, which can take the artisan over 3 years to completely embroider these unique and exquisite shawls, many of these beautiful designs were introduced from Persia and are inspired by nature. Once completed the shawl will then be washed and pressed.
