Capital Steez & Timeless Consciousness
(x)
The American political and social climate feels that it has grown in vocalization within the past five years. Rappers and singers alike have been expressing their thoughts about social issues through their art; like Kendrick’s 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly and more recently J. Cole’s 2018 album K.O.D. An artist less remembered is Jamal Deware, who went by his stage name of “Capital Steez”. A young black American east coast rapper who formed Pro (Progressive) Era Radio in 2011 with members like Joey Bada$$ and Kirk Knight, released his first solo mixtape AmeriKKKan Korruption in 2012 at age 19. He is most tragically known for his apparent “suicide” in December of that same year (or he was murdered by the Illuminati, or he is on the same island as Tupac. Conspiracy theories surrounding his death are all too rampant.), along with his “New Age” spiritual beliefs—such as the supernatural, the third eye, and “indigo” energy.
Capital Steez’s lyricism and art is eternal. Even now, his haunting beats and mysticism speak to the mood of today’s society. As social unrest and dissatisfaction with the current system grows, the youth of this country are becoming restless. Capital Steez’s track “Free the Robots” speaks to an array of social issues that were relevant in 2012 and have seemed to span through the passed six years since it’s release.

Illuminati tryin’ to read my mind with a eagle eye And the haze got me thinkin’, why We killed Osama and plenty innocent people died
Capital Steez was notorious for his paranoid thinking and conspiracy enticing thoughts. He seems to be referencing more the Surveillance State and the consistent monitoring of our activity on the internet—which seems more and more relevant as our phones and laptops nowadays really do seem to be listening in on our conversations. Through the haze of pot smoke, he postulates on the celebration of the killing of Osama Bin Laden in 2011 by the Obama administration. Despite the wiping out of an apparent major threat to America: Steez wonders about the lives of innocent people that were taken in the midsts of a “justified” war. It seems as though these anti-war, or at least questioning-war sentiments remain as the youth of today question the purpose of bombing innocent civilians in the name of American interventionism.
We should see the signs, but we Stevie blind No disrespect to the man or the legend, but I’m sick and tired of askin’ my brethren if It all ends in 2011 Would God come through or would he actually forget us? Cause, apocalypse is getting closer But they’re more focused on our lil youth sippin’ soda Fuck the sugar act, n**** * out pushing crack And I lost my father figure because of that.
Convinced of an oncoming ‘apocalypse’ (perhaps societal disturbance? But most likely a reference to the second coming of Christ from Rastafarianism), he criticizes the focus of the government, this entire verse seems to ridicule the dismissal of the real issue of crack/cocaine in black communities and the hyperfocus on something as trivial as sugar. While whole communities are being destroyed by this drug (his own father’s involvement leading to his death)—the government fails to advert our attention to how much sugar our youth is consuming: as if they aren’t shoveling a deadlier molecule into their community.
So can I live, or is my brother tryin’ to gun me down? Scuffle a couple rounds ‘til we hear the thunder sound No lightning, clash of the titans And after the violence a moment of silence Cause I want mine the fast way The ski mask way, lookin’ for a fast pay And instead of stickin’ up for each other We pickin’ up guns and stickin’ up our brothers
Here Capital Steez addresses the huge issue of gun violence. He begins this verse with questioning if he is even allowed to live in this violence ridden world. In four lines he deconstructs gun violence. He uncovers the appealing grandness and power some see within guns (“thunder sound”). He strips it of its appeal and flashiness that attracts. Further, he might even be commenting on societal response to gun violence when he says “and after the violence a moment of silence”. Is a moment of silence enough to make a difference? To solve the issue at hand? As if “thoughts and prayers” fix broken communities? He expands on violence as he continues on. He discusses how members of his community would rather commit violence upon each other for a quick buck instead of protecting each other from a greater threat.
So fuck ‘em all, I’m comin’ through ragin’ And I won’t stop ‘til Reagan is caged in Mom tell me I should let the Lord handle it The arm of the law is tryin’ to man-handle us A man’s world, but a white man’s planet And the doors are slowly closing while we fallin’ through the cracks of it It’s a shame that flippin’ crack will be The best alternative if you don’t make it rappin’ These crack houses and trap houses are trappin’ us in And in the end we’re gonna remain stagnant I ain’t havin’ it.
This last portion hits a lot of topics that seemed to be on Capital Steez’s mind. Firstly, he very clearly references police brutality when he discusses the “arm of the law” trying to “man-handle” them. He further discusses race issues as the societal dominance of white males continuously close doors of opportunity for black Americans. He assesses approaches to success, and the common dichotomy of rapping and drug involvement. Capital Steez seems to have believed that he’s forced into two choices: being a drug dealer or be successful in rapping—which in the end, both seem to leave him unfulfilled.
These lyrics pasted over a haunting beat with intertwined piano notes and organs seem to bring to life this dissatisfaction, and the ominously insidious unrest and paranoia. Touching on drug addiction and crime in his community, along with institutionalized racism and gun violence: Steez shared his personalized commentary in this track on these topics. His interesting beats and cutting lyricism live in the pure continuous relevance to society even now in 2018. It is almost disheartening that these issues live on; but we must continue to utilize art and music to shed light on these issues so that we may address them and come up with viable progressive solutions.

Capital Steez was also the founder of the Beast Coast movement which consists of 3 main groups based in Flatbush: Pro Era, Flatbush Zombies and The Underachievers. On the night of December 23, 2012 he made his way to the rooftop of the Cinematic Music Group headquarters in Manhattan’s Flatiron District where he texted a few of his closest friends to tell them that he loved them and at 10:59 PM posted a tweet saying "The end". He jumped off the rooftop later that night.
