This one's a long walk. Get comfy. SO my brother from another mother, Kyle, was working at this biker bar between Tahoe and Vegas. It's a ways on the Nevada side of the highway, kind of out in the middle of nowhere. Just a couple gas pumps and the bar itself, no souvenir shops, no attached casino, just BOOM, here's your biker bar that looks like it's been here since Lords of Flatbush was released (and tbh it has been).

So it was around 2 AM and there was only one guy around who had fallen asleep in a booth, and Kyle was getting ready to get up from the bar, wake him up and get him a ride home, that usual stuff that bartenders DO before they close up. He'd already weighed the bottles and done inventory, didn't feel like anyone was going to be coming in, when the saloon doors flap open... And no one's there. Kyle frowns a little at that `cause it's not windy out there tonight. Kinda weird. But all's calm and quiet and he can ignore that, until he starts hearing this loud, wet WHAPping. And he leans over the counter to look... and there's a three foot long trout on the floor. Now, Kyle is not the brightest bulb in the marquee (I love the man, but it is what it is). So rather than do anything else, he just stands there, staring, watching this fish flop across the floor, as he tries to puzzle out how a trout ended up on a highway in the middle of the Mojave desert. Fell off the back of a truck? Someone was fishing at a reservoir somewhere and he got out of the creel? And no matter what, he can't quite figure out anything that makes sense, because he hasn't heard anything bigger than a Honda Civic passing close in hours. And the trout just keeps flopping closer and closer and closer and finally it does this weirdly acrobatic FLOP and ends up on the barstool in front of Kyle. Kyle stares at the fish. The fish stares at Kyle. And Kyle goes into autopilot. "What'll you have, mac?" And the fish stares up at Kyle with its huge, unblinking eyes.

"WATER!"

Kate Winslet as Mildred Pierce (2011) in a publicity still with Evan Rachel Wood as her daughter Vida. The film was photographed by Edward Lachman. Ed was born in Morristown, New Jersey, and has 81 cinematography credits from The Lords of Flatbush (1974) to 2023. He has three Oscar nominations for Far from Heaven and Carol, both also with Todd Haynes, and El Conde. This is his second honorable mention, after Erin Brockovich.

His other notable credits include Say Amen Somebody, a New Order video, Desperately Seeking Susan, Mudonna's Into the Groove video, True Stories, Less Than Zero, Mississippi Masala, Selena, The Limey, The Virgin Suicides, Ken Park, I'm Not There, Life During Wartime, Dark Waters, and Louis Armstrong's Black and Blues.

It's been nearly 50 years since Sylvester Stallone broke through in Hollywood, first with a starring role in The Lords of Flatbush and then with the film that made him famous, Rocky. Now, Stallone's life and career has been chronicled in the new documentary, Sly. As an actor, writer, and director, Stallone has often gone above and beyond in his involvement with films. Perhaps no film exemplifies this more than the first Rambo movie he made, First Blood. Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival's Conversation With... event, Stallone told the story about how he turned First Blood from a movie nobody wanted to make into one that everybody wanted to watch.

One reason I'm ambivalent about Rikers closing is because I would love to see Goldenberg and Samet spend some time there. No management company should be able to advertise how effective it is at refusing to spend the money necessary to keep units inhabitable.

End the incentives to be a slum lord. Where there are so many violations committed by management, rent strikers should be protected from retaliation from landlords.
