FEEDBACK, COMMENTS, AND REBLOGS ARE ENCOURAGED AND APPRECIATED!
Things are different now. You are different now. Not in a bad way, you suppose. Just different. You’re more social, more outgoing, you feel more at peace with yourself. To think that it’s all because of a group project.
Never would you have thought that a randomized group project would lead you to your newfound friends. Never would you have thought they would be Frat boys. Bradley Bradshaw and Jake Seresin somehow wormed their way into your little friend group, bringing Javy Machado and Reuben Fitch with them. Suddenly, your little group of five became nine. You used to think you’d hate it, but now you wouldn’t have things any other way.
Even Jake Seresin, who you found absolutely infuriating, added something to the dynamic of the group. Despite your clear distaste for him, it just wouldn’t be the same without him.
You couldn’t explain it, but you felt complete. Had you told yourself five months ago that you’d become friends with Delta Chi’s most notorious you would have laughed in your own face. Never, in a million years, did you think that would ever happen. Yet here you were, spending your Saturday night in your apartment playing board games and drinking (they were drinking, you were supervising) with your expanded group.
“I call bullshit! That’s a hit!” Javy drunkenly slurs at Bob who holds his hands up with clear offense.
Bob pushes his glasses up the slope of his nose. His flushed skin and pink tipped ears are a tell tale sign that he is intoxicated. “Is not!”
Javy shakes his head vigorously. “Is to! Let me see that,” he clumsily reaches over towards Bob’s Battleship board. Javy’s lack of coordination sends the board flying, along with the rain of tiny red and white playing pieces that scatter across the living room.
The room erupts in a chorus of shouts and groans upon the inevitable clean up of the game and you sigh from your place on the couch. “I think that’s enough of that for tonight.” You wipe your palms on the fabric of your pants before bringing yourself to a stand.
Carefully maneuvering around your friends who are now scattered all across the room picking up little red and white bullets, you gather the last of stray cups of alcohol that was left on the coffee table.
“Hey!” Bradley catches sight of you whisking away their stash for the night.
“Nope, no more drinks for tonight.” Bradley opens his mouth in protest as you continue, “Unless you want to spend the rest of the night cleaning the apartment of the mess you guys made.”
The pointed look you give him makes his mouth snap shut and he sends you a mock salute before clumsily going back to picking up stray playing pieces.
“Thank you,” you chide, sauntering over to the kitchen. You laugh at the sound of your friends’ overlapping chatter and Natasha’s mothering as she commands the boys to quit stalling and clean.
There was no denying that your apartment was loud. Louder than it should be for ten o’clock at night. But you couldn’t bring yourself to care about quieting your friends down. You’ve spent so long living in silence that you embrace the sounds of joy and laughter that surround you.
Silence isn’t unfamiliar to you. You grew up as an only child in a big house with emotionally absent parents. Silence was the only thing you ever knew. Then it wasn’t.
You found a new home, a new family. One you wouldn’t give up for anything.
You were too deep in your own musings to notice the faint footsteps creeping up behind you.
“You missed a few,” a deep voice from behind you makes your heart jump.
You almost drop the cups in your hand as you spin on your heel to see Jake Seresin standing in front of you with a few more glasses in hand.
Your shoulders drop from your ears once you get a hold of your surroundings. “Geez, Seresin! You almost scared me half to death.”
He winces at your wide eyes, biting his bottom lip to stifle the smile that threatens to cross his face. “Sorry,” he shrugs, stepping in front of you to place the cups on the counter behind you.
You’re unsure whether or not he decided to step into your space intentionally. Either way, he was close enough for your chests to touch. The thought set your cheeks on fire, causing you to shove his arm away with a scoff. “Ever heard of personal space, Hangman?”
Rather than the witty retort you were expecting out of him, Jake mumbles a soft apology before stepping back to keep an arm's length between you two.
The silence that follows is unsettling. You realize that you have never been alone with Jake for longer than a few minutes at a time. When you were working on the group project together, Bradley was always around. The one time you tried to help him study for his American History final, you fell asleep halfway into your study session, cutting it short. For some reason you didn’t know how to act around him in any way other than hostile.
You were glad he fought you back with just as much fire. It kept the strange feelings in your stomach at bay.
The way he was looking at you now, however, this was different from the Jake you were so used to seeing. There was no puff to his chest or arrogance in his gaze. Only softness and dare you say, ease in his posture.
“They’re showing the Twilight movies at the theaters this weekend if you were interested in going,” Jake breaks the silence.
It takes you a moment to comprehend what he’s saying or to even realize that he’s talking to you. You thought Natasha must have stumbled her way into the kitchen but you glanced around to see no one but you two still there. You could no longer hear the noise being made by your friends in the living room. It was like all your senses had suddenly attuned to the man in front of you. The only thing you were aware of was him. You stutter embarrassingly over your words as you respond. “Oh, you mean wi–with you?”
Jake’s eyes grow wide before he shakes his head. “No, well, yeah if you want to. I wasn’t trying to imply that you should go with me or anything. You could go with anyone you want. Doesn’t have to be me, I just thought that you’d like to know since you’re such a huge fan of the series.”
Jake wants the ground to open up and swallow him whole right now. Smooth, Seresin, he scolds himself. Just when he thought he might have been reaching some middle ground with you, he had to go and make it weird by making you think he was asking you out. Not that he was opposed to the idea, rather that he wanted to ask you out the right way. Not while he was slightly tipsy in your kitchen.
Your lips twitch unexpectedly, pulling upwards at the corners. There was something about seeing this side of Jake Seresin–the nervous, rambly side of him– that you found endearing. You preferred him more than the cocky, self centered frat boy he usually was. “How did you know I like the Twilight series?”
He shrugs nonchalantly, a proud smile over taking his worried features. “You aren’t the only one who pays attention to things, Ace.”
You put your hands up in surrender with light laughter, shaking your head softly. “Sorry, I’m just surprised that Jake Seresin pays attention to things other than sorority girls and himself.”
“I pay attention to you,” the words just almost fall from his lips. Instead what comes out is, “And football. I pay attention to football too.”
You snort, crossing your arms across your chest with a smirk. “Right, sorority girls, yourself, and the Dallas Cowboys.”
“You got it, sweetheart,” he winks.
The corner of his mouth lifts slightly when he winks and you find it absolutely amusing. A small fit of giggles erupt from you causing him to tilt his head with confusion.
“What’s so funny, Ace?” he questions with his hands on his hips.
His own lips quirk up as he tries not to laugh, finding your own incredibly contagious. That and he couldn’t help but think of just how much he loved seeing you this way. So open and carefree.
Love. That isn’t the first time the word has popped into Jake’s head when he thought of you. It was, however, the first time he truly welcomed the thought.
It wasn’t like in the movies, where the main character has this big revelation that they're in love. Rather, it slowly crept up on him. Always being in the back of his mind, but never clear enough for him to make out what it was exactly he was feeling.
But things have changed lately, he has changed. You made him want to be better.
You two weren’t close, far from it actually. But he wants to get close to you. He wants to be someone worth your time. He wants to be able to have more moments like this with you.
He was willing to prove that he was no longer the immature playboy you think he is.
The question is on the tip of his tongue. Maybe he should just take this as an opportunity to ask you out. He opens his mouth, ready to take the leap when—
“Bradley!” Natasha shouts from the living room. “Ace, can you grab the Clorox? Bradley just threw up on the floor!”
Mickey moans, “I think I might be next!”
You curse under your breath sending Jake a look he reciprocated with a tired sigh.
“Well, looks like we’re on babysitting duty,” you weakly smile.
He nods halfheartedly, watching you grab the wipes before hurrying out to the living room. His chest physically hurt as he watched you walk away. He was so close. However, he knew his feelings would have to wait.
The old Jake didn’t do commitment or girlfriends. The old Jake didn’t fall in love.
The new Jake was falling hard, and he was falling fast. He had a feeling things were only going to get more complicated from here. He doesn’t mind it, though. In fact, he kind of likes it.

Choism's 2023 Kinktober
Hello and welcome to my first ever kinktober! I will be doing 15 days of kinks featuring various fictional characters and kpop idols from all of my hyperfixations. If there is a kink you don't like, then don't interact! There will be absolutely no kink shaming on this blog and if I find out you are making fun of any of the kinks mentioned you will be executed (blocked). Anyway, enjoy this collection of my special interests <3
Every single kink will have a definition in the fic intro, as well as additional tag warnings and word count! None of this are in any particular order and will be posted as I write them, as opposed to in order from the day set. I may start posting before october starts just to get a head start since I know I am a slower writer. I hope you all love it 🫶🏻
All fics are under the cut!

Neteyam didn’t know what to do in all honesty, he didn’t know what to begin with. How should he court you? What should he do first? Weave a necklace for you? No.. that would be too much, too early. Perhaps.. let you watch him hunt and prepare the food, to see how he’s good at providing and hunting? Maybe. But, what he did know was that he would not let you down with his advances. He would try his utmost best to impress you, in the hopes of you becoming his one and only mate.
Today, Neteyam, had offered you to watch him hunt and you obviously agreed, not only could you spend more time with him but you could also see him in action, like the day before. Neteyam moves smoothly and swiftly into the forest while you on the other hand, stumbled and definenetly did not walk as smoothly as Neteyam.
While trudging through the forest you heard in front of you, Neteyam chuckling before slowing down his pace, "can't keep up?", you roll your eyes at his words, "uhm, yes, i can't keep up." you huff and jogged to his side.
He hums and nods, looking down at your smaller figure walking beside him, trying to keep up with his strides. Neteyam smiles but not before slowing down much more this time, allowing you two to walk in sync.
You sigh in relief when noticing this, thank God. Once you two were finally side by side and walking slowly, you noticed how it was oddly quiet. Normally Neteyam would be rambling about what happened that morning or just about anything but right now, it was quiet, way too quiet for your liking.
Neteyam was thinking about how he should make himself more appealing to you. Hunting or not. Should he face you while releasing the arrow, piercing the animal while still looking at you? it would most likely get out a praise from you.
But a praise is very little to what he actually wanted. He wanted you to think of him as strong just like a warrior, he wanted you to think of someone who could provide for their mate. He wanted you to think of him as though he was a peacock (or the equivalent of an attractive male). Trying to attract you to him, letting you know that he was available.
Unable to withstand the silence, you decided to spark up a conversation. "So.. what are you going to be hunting today?" you question, your hands clutching the strap of your satchel as you spoke, looking up at Neteyam you see him shake his head, as if he was in another world.
He clears his throat quickly before answering your question, "a Sturmbeest. It is one of the main delicacies in our clan. You know about them, right?" Neteyam responded—pursing his lips before whipping his head around quickly. His ears perked up, his tail had stopped swaying and was now still. You jumped ever so lightly, his actions had caught you off guard.
Before you could mouth a word Neteyam immediately pressed his hand against your mouth, cupping it whole. Your eyes widened, again, his actions had caught you off guard. You tensed up, looking up and Neteyam who was staring off at the distance. Trying to make some sense out of this situation you held your breath and tried to listen to what Neteyam was presumably listening to.
And there you heard it, the stomps and soft but heavy footsteps. It was no doubt, a Sturmbeest. Neteyam releases his hand from your mouth and apologizes before putting his two fingers in mouth, he whistled in a pattern for his Ikran to hear, and thankfully, it did.
Normally, Neteyam would be mounting his Ikran to kill the Sturmbeest but since he wanted you to be there with him (for courting reasons and overall) and you weren't ready to be on Ikran let alone be up thousands of feet up in the air he decided to just go through the forest to see one, and then call his Ikran, hop on it and then kill it from up there with you down at the forest at a reasonable feet away to see the killing. But Neteyam secretly hoped that you would finally agree to flying with him on his Ikran. After a few seconds you heard the screeches of an Ikran and the flaps of its wing, finally, you saw the familiar blue figure fly down to where you and Neteyam were at, it was no doubt, säsìlpey. The leaves and twigs that laid on the ground were now being thrown around, some of the leaves hitting your face which caused you to bring your arm up—protecting your face. "Good morning to you too, säsìlpey." Neteyam spoke, patting his Ikran on its head to which it nuzzled its head against his hand. You smiled from this little interaction. But your smile slowly falls once his Ikran spots you. You clench your fists tightly, almost turning your knuckles completely white. "Easy, säsìlpey, she's harmless." He whispers. His Ikran shakes its head like it was trying to contemplate whether or not they should listen to its tamer or not, but they did anyways. Once Neteyam's Ikran backs down he immediately connects both of their tendrils before hopping on its back and pressing his thighs tightly against his Ikran. Neteyam looked up at you who was standing still and tense. There was silence at first, but it was broken when he spoke. "You could join me if you would like. You could see me in action, you know, shooting the Sturmbeest closely. It's a nice view." he offers while holding onto the Ikran's ear-like tendril. You put on your thinking face (which consists of a pursed lip and furrowed brows) and eyed both Neteyam and his Ikran. Finally, you sighed and gave him a small nod and begrudging dragged your feet towards his Ikran, you were quite hesitant at first, to walk near Neteyam's Ikran but since it was looking the other way your nerves eased.. a bit.
Once you were beside the belly of his Ikran, Neteyam grabbed onto your waist and hoisted you up – causing you to shriek and hold your breath – before seating you down in front of him. You heard Neteyam let out a hearty laugh. Seeing you tense up once his hands met with your body amused him greatly.
Never in your life have you ever felt so afraid. Sitting on an Ikran that was shrieking, head shaking side to side as the wings flapped slightly. "Hold onto here, very tightly. Or you can hold my arm.. whichever suits you the best" Neteyam says and points to säsìlpey's ear-like tendril.
You seem to have disregarded his last sentence as you (unfortunately) did not hold onto his arm, which Neteyam noticed and frowned. Turning your head back around to look at where he pointed you nodded and held onto them and you made sure to grip onto them tightly. "Not that tight-" he snorts, his comment made your cheeks warm from embarrassment. All you could do was mutter a quiet "whoops" and loosen your grip.
You felt Neteyam lean over you, his broad chest making contact with your back, strangely enough, it warmed your back almost immediately. After settling on the Ikran's back you looked up at Neteyam, squinting your eyes as the rays of light – that cut right through the small slits of the large leaves – hit your face, you were thankful for the canopy, if it weren't for the large leaves covering the sky you would've been blind.
Neteyam raised his brow and gave you a look. A look you knew all too well. You thought for a second, were you ready? or should you re-think your decision? Scraping your thoughts you gave him a nod and turned back around. Even though this was your first experience of flying on a Ikran with Neteyam and you were nervous, there was a small tingly sensation in your chest, you were excited.
Slowing, a smile crept onto your face, and before you knew it you were being pushed back, your back pressed firmly against his chest as his Ikran flapped its wing and flew into the air. As soon as you knew you were up in the air you closed your eyes shut.
Your grip on säsìlpey's tendril tightened but remembering what Neteyam had said and the thought of hurting them made you loosen the grip slightly, but as you did so you could only shut your eyes more tightly.
The air whooshed past you aggressively, making your hair fly everywhere as you released one of your hands that were holding the tendril and placed it on top of your head to try to stop it from going anywhere but to no avail so you gave up and placed it back on its tendril. At first, it felt as if the air itself was a living being, slapping your body and skin harshly as you two flew in the air.
"Open your eyes, you're missing out on the view." Neteyam stated, and just as he said that the air that was striking your body with force was now light, airy, and less aggressive than what you had gone through a few seconds ago. You were hesitant to open your eyes, not wanting to know how high you two were up in the air but you could not deny the fact that you indeed, did, want to see the view. You knew how absolutely breathtaking it would be, so a little peek wouldn't hurt, right?
As your eyes shot open the first thing that you could not miss was the bright, blue and cloudy sky with a canopy of trees below you. There were little slits amidst the trees where you could see the bioluminescent leaves and shrubs that surrounded small ponds. It would've looked like a bouquet if you were extremely up high. It would've looked like a bouquet if you were extremely high up. You could see everything from up there, where your lab was, all the tents and huts where all the people were and most importantly, the Sturmbeest.
As soon as you spotted them, your eyes immediately lit up; they were running in a large group to some place else. But the most eye-catching thing of all was how one of the Sturmbeest was separated from the rest of the group—they were slightly apart from the large herd, as if they were trying to separate him from the rest, an outsider.
"Hold on tight!" was the last thing you heard before you felt the air whooshing around you as you were diving down to (where you assumed) where the Sturmbeest were. You gladly took Neteyam's advice as you clutched the tendril tightly, not planning on letting go of it anytime.
You squint your eyes by instinct, not wanting the air to hit your face violently when you realized.. you were wearing a mask.. right.. you purse your lips upon realizing that there was no need to be squinting and scrunching up your face.
Within a few seconds you were already flying above the left out Sturmbeest, "that one, do you see it?" Neteyam says before pointing at the Sturmbeest. You nodded and loosened your grip on the tendril—your palms were slightly sweaty as you wiped your palms on your shirt.
Neteyam's Ikran flew smoothly now, gliding through the air unseen and unheard by the Sturmbeest. "Stay put." he states and stands up, his feet on his Ikran with you in front of him, panicking. "Wha- what on earth are you doing?! Get back down now! You could fall you kno-" you commanded while looking between the Sturmbeest and Neteyam in a nervous manner. Before you could finish your sentence, Neteyam had cut you off when he fired an arrow straight towards the Sturmbeest.
As he shot the arrow you followed where it gone and saw how it had pierced through a small gap in its front shoulders, the Sturmbeest shrieked in pain before falling down and continuing to shriek in pain. You heard its scream falter away as it laid there, still and dead-looking.
The herd still kept on galloping and running, none moved out of the line to check on the other Sturmbeest, no, rather, they seemed to have not cared at all. They did not flinch, they did not scream, they did absolutely nothing, only running and running while the dust surrounded their legs as they ran.
Once the area was slightly cleared – with only a few Sturmbeests running – Neteyam's Ikran flew down to the now dead Sturmbeest and flapped its wing upon reaching the ground. Your head was panging as if someone was repeatedly hitting your head, except for that there was no pain whatsoever.
Neteyam jumped off his Ikran before holding onto your arm, his queue still connected to his Ikran as he slowly and carefully hoisted you off the Ikran and making sure that you landed softly on the ground. His touches were tender and gentle, nothing alike how tough and coarse his hands were.
Once making sure that you were fine he disconnected his queue and patted his Ikran, "thank you säsìlpey." he muttered as his forehead touched his Ikran's neck, it only shrieked and shook its head in response before flying off, the dirt and dust flying around as it took off.
Neteyam turns around and spots you crouched down beside the Sturmbeest while stroking its skin. He raises his eyebrow in both confusion and amusement, "what are you doing?" he asks while walking towards you before kneeling down beside you. You don't answer, instead, you hum and run your fingers over the Sturmbeest's armor-like skin.
"It's beautiful, but I wish I could say that when it's not dead." you say softly, Neteyam hums, letting his gaze flicker between the animal to you. After gazing at you for a few seconds he cleared his throat, prompting you to turn your head towards him.
"Yes? What is it?" you question, retracting your hand back and wiping off the dust on your clothes. Neteyam does not respond, only eyeing the Sturmbeest before looking at you again quickly. Your brows furrowed as you squint your eyes, what was he trying to do?
As Neteyam opens his mouth to explain he's immediately cut off by you finally realizing what he was trying to say. "Ohhhhh- right right, yes of course..", Neteyam gives you a nod before standing up with you mirroring his actions.
While Neteyam was taking the arrow out of the Sturmbeest you were standing there awkwardly, embarrassed about what had just happened. Were you that dumb? Could you really not realize what Neteyam had been trying to tell you for mere seconds? Gee, you really were dense.
Neteyam pressed his two fingers on the choker device before speaking, "dad, I got a large one for tonight, call some of my men to come get it?" he asked, and not long before asking that question he nodded and thanked him before releasing his fingers from the device.
"For tonight? Who's cooking?" you questioned while fiddling with your shirt, your head downcast before looking up at Neteyam with those eyes. It wasn't suggestive or had ill intentions, he knew that you didn't mean anything when you gave him those eyes. They looked so innocent, so doe-like. So beautiful.
He shook his head slightly, trying to get rid of the inappropriate thoughts before answering your question. "Mo'at is."
You nod your head while humming, stating that you obviously enjoyed Mo'at's cooking. You look behind Neteyam and notice all the greenery all around you. What a nice view, might as well sketch it out! you thought, you zip open your pocket and pull out a small notebook and with the click of your pen you're off to sketching the scenery right in front of you.
While you were drawing Neteyam on the other hand, was thinking. Thinking of how else he should impress you, what should he do? That was when something clicked in his mind, that's right! Sharing a piece of the meat that you had caught and killed to someone is significant. Not all na'vi share their food with one another unless it's their parents, siblings or their mate.
If he gave you a plate full of everything that he had caught and (partially) made, surely you would get the hint and gladly accept his advances? Maybe, you would maybe, just maybe, by any chance, you would notice his attempts and save his poor heart and just confess your love to him—if you felt the same way of course.
His fists clenched tightly with just the thought of you accepting his advances, his tail whipping side to side in excitement. But both you and Neteyam were out of your trance upon hearing the sound of a twig snapping. His ears perked up to where the direction of the sound was coming from.
Neteyam stood over you protectively in no time, arms splayed out that covered your body. Both you and Neteyam's heart was racing, who was there? Or, more like, what was there?
Your breath hitched as you heard another twig snapping. Suddenly Neteyam's arm slowly lowers, you notice his body relaxing as well. Then you heard someone yell out his name, you tilt your head to the side to see who it was and your eyes laid on another na'vi, supposedly one of Neteyam's friends or men.
"Neteyam! Oh- that is a big one, it'll be enough for tonight." one said while a couple more of the men emerge from behind and head towards the Sturmbeest. As they all walked toward the Sturmbeest and started the hoist and dragged the animal some noticed you behind Neteyam.
Upon noticing this he stiffens and raises his arm slightly, as if telling them to look away and to back off. They glanced between you and Neteyam, they gave you odd looks and some even raised their brow from what Neteyam had done, he was protecting you and they didn't know why.
When they finally took their eyes off you they continued to drag the Sturmbeest further into the forest. Neteyam offered to help as well. He told you to stay right next to him and to be at least 3 feet away from his men, he didn't trust them to be near you.
After what felt like hours (when it was really just maybe one of two) everybody managed to get to the village in no time. Neteyam ordered the men to call for father and mother to come to see what they would be cooking, the men all nodded and went separate ways. Some calling the cooks for tonight and some for the news.
While waiting for his parents to return he ushered you to sit down by a tree with him following right behind you and sat beside you. People were giving you stares there and then, the children would smile and wave at you as they have grown fond of you from seeing you many times in the village, while the adults on the other hand scowled and gave you nasty looks.
You could see Neteyam clenching his fists when he saw how the people were looking at you. Hearing his tail thumping on the ground and how his knuckles were almost completely white you decide to break the tension. "So.. there's going to be a feast tonight?" you started, Neteyam turned his face to face you and nodded. "Yes, there will be a feast tonight..."
His voice trailed off like he was going to say something but decided not to, this only made you curious, quirking your brow you nudged him lightly which prompted Neteyam to raise his brows. "And? Anything else?" you hummed, "Well.. there's something" he mused.
Your back now straightened, sitting properly now, beaming from his comment. Neteyam sighed in defeat, he could never not tell you anything on his mind. Clearing his throat he spoke up, "I was thinking if you wanted to.. come to tonight's feast?" when you don't respond for a few seconds he takes that as a no, which disappointed him as this was what he had been waiting for.
His ears flattened as you parted your lips to speak but nothing came out. His tail slowly rose and fell, you could barely hear it now. Neteyam hung his head low as he sucked in a deep breath. "Look-", "I'm sorry! I know I should've said something but I didn't—I do want to go!" you blurted out.
Your face was red and hot from embarrassment, how could you just leave him with no response? You felt extremely bad for Neteyam. His eyes were wide as if he had seen a ghost. Your sudden burst stunned him as he didn't expect you to speak. But nonetheless, he smiled like a madman.
"Come to the village at... what do you call it?" Neteyam muttered, "what time?" you replied, "at uh.. 11 pm, is it?", "yes, I'll come by at 11 pm. Got it." As you stood up and turned away, like before, Neteyam stopped you. Turning around you smiled at him, "hm?", "...make sure someone brings you here, okay? Don't go out alone." he said with a look of genuine concern. You nodded.
"Neteyam! Come here, we need to speak." Jake yelled while motioning for him to come over. Neteyam obliged and walked over to where his father stood and placed himself in front of Jake.
"Now, we know that you are to become the next Olo'eyktan, correct?" Jake stated, Neteyam nodded with furrowed brows, trying to guess what his father was about to talk to him about. "You are of that age now, Neteyam. You have tamed a Banshee, you have sought your spirit animal, you have done all your tasks and training,"
Neteyam nodded, telling his father to go on. "In a few days, you will be considered an adult amongst the Omaticaya." upon hearing his father's words his eyes shone. Jake could only grin. "And... you must find a mate."
Jake continues to smirk while Neteyam on the other hand froze, a.. mate? No, he refused to find another mate besides you. He didn't want anybody but you. He wanted you. He shakes his head, even though you weren't na'vi, you could still be his mate and he won't back down, he won't give up on you or his advances "I already have a mate in mind. Did Neytiri not tell you?"
He saw his father's smile turn into a frown, "Neytiri.. didn't.. tell me?" Neteyam shook his head, "I'm assuming no?" Jake blinked once, twice, before looking at his son before sighing, "well.. you better court her now.. who knows? Maybe someone will snatch her up!"
That's exactly what Neytiri said.. Neteyam thought, and as Jake patted his shoulder before walking away he remembered what his father had said, 'who knows? Maybe someone will snatch her up!' the thought of you being with someone else that wasn't him made his mind go dizzy.
No. He will not fail to court you, he will not fail to become your mate. And today would prove his skills of courtship and how what a worthy mate he is.
"Ak! I'm going to be late- Norm come here right now! We need to leave." you yelled while hurriedly putting your jacket on while hopping on your shoes, trying to put them on. Norm groaned in response as he face-palmed, "why can't you go alone- I mean, it's not that dangerous out there-"
"When It's in the morning? Yeah, but it's night! Anything could be out there ready to pounce on me and eat me, besides, Neteyam told me that someone had to be with me to escort me." you say, finally getting your shoes on before grabbing your oxygen mask.
You grabbed one for Norm as well but looking up and remembering that he was in his avatar you put it down and opened the door, "bye you guys!" you cheerily said before walking down the stairs and jumping off at the last one. "Bye y/n! Come back at.. uh, soon, okay?" you hummed before yelling out an "okay!"
Norm stuck by your side, holding your arm even though it should be you. "Y-y/n maybe we should just go bac-" muttered Norm, "Oh- shush you, big baby! Really, I thought I was the one meant to be scared." Norm took a big gulp and clutched your arm tighter which only got a yelp out of you and a slap on his hand.
When you two finally arrived at the hut you saw that nobody was inside their homes, instead, you heard loud noises, chattering, and the sounds of footsteps. You noticed how they were all in one big hut with bright orange light emitting out of the room. As you turned around to talk to Norm he immediately blurted out that he was going to leave and rushed off back to the lab. You rolled your eyes and sighed heavily. Looking back at the hut you start to make your way towards it and with each step the more your stomach starts to churn and contort. You had no idea why but you were nervous. Clutching your stomach you continued to walk until you were right in front of the door, the door-way was large and much wider, obviously. Taking a deep breath you closed your eyes shut and opened them.
Your stomach felt much better now. As you stepped inside the noisy and crowded room you noticed how the room seemed a bit more dimmer and less noisy. When one head turned so did the other which led everybody to turn their head towards you. Just great, you thought to yourself as your heart skipped a beat. The children that were sitting down with their parents now smiled brightly and set their food down before standing up and running towards you, some of the children were immediately sat down by their parents who hissed angrily. “Y/n! Why are you here?” one of the children asked, “yeah! Shouldn’t you be back home?” another said, You giggled to make yourself feel better but also from their cuteness, “well, Neteyam invited me here! I hope I’m not intruding, am I?” The children tilted their heads in confusion as they didn’t know what ‘intruding’ meant, but they didn’t ask any more questions, only taking your hand to drag you to where they and their parents sat and offered you some food. You politely refused them with a wave of your hand, and you could even see how some of the parents smiled when you declined their offer, while some parents insisted that you eat and frowned when you told them that you couldn’t because of your mask. Many whispers flooded the room and some even spoke louder for you to hear, “why is she here? Shouldn’t she be with her people?” and so on. Suddenly, Neteyam entered the hut from all the commotion he heard from the other room. “What is going on-” Neteyam cuts himself off upon seeing you surrounded by children. Your body tensed up from hearing his voice, his thick na’vi accent when he spoke English never failed to make your knees feel like jelly. “Y/n?” He knew it was you, yet he had no idea why he asked if it was you, of course it was you. You turned around and gave him an awkward smile. “Come.” say no more, you thought and smiled apologetically to the children before running over to Neteyam. Once you were by his side you were glued to his side immediately when he wrapped his arm around your shoulders. He had brought you into a room further into the hut, glaring at anybody who was staring at you weirdly or was looking at you too intently. Once you reached an area where you assumed where everybody that was his family sat, Neytiri mumbled something under her breath, Mo’at smiled and gestured for you to come sit down while Jake and the rest of his children welcomed you. Your lips thinned as you bowed slightly before Neteyam ushered you to sit beside Mo’at. “smon nìprrte” you said when you sat down beside her, she only smiled in return and raised you a large leaf full of all sorts of meat and vegetables. Neteyam moved his siblings away from you and sat down beside you.
You held the leaf that had meat and veggies on it. It looked tasty, actually, although you were wearing a mask you could still smell it and did it smell good! You licked your lips but still held onto it. Neteyam gazed at you, wondering why you wouldn’t eat even though you looked hungry, you didn’t even eat from this afternoon to now! “Y/n- are you not hung-”, “Neteyam, Did you invite her?” Neytiri asked nonchalantly while peeling the skin off the fruit with a knife. He nodded and looked at you who was still looking at the food, moving it side to side to get a better view of it. Clearing his throat he spoke, “y/n. Are you not hungry? This is the meat of the Sturmbeest I caught.” he said and pointed at a piece of meat that looked tender and meaty. You gulped, it looked so good. But your stupid mask prevented you from eating it which annoyed you greatly. “Really?” you inquired, he hummed in response and nodded. Both you and Neteyam sat in silence, you were busy admiring and eyeing the food while Neteyam sat with you and patiently waited for you to start eating. His tail swished and thumped on the ground as he continued to stare between you and the food. After a while you spoke again. “It looks really nice! And delicious, I could and would eat it but uhm.. My mask..” Neteyam felt like someone had hit his head hard, how could be so stupid? Of course the reason why you couldn't eat was because of your mask! His face flushed purple-ish red when he realized his very obvious mistake.
Noticing how he paused for a second before shaking his head slightly, made you feel horrible. You didn't want to decline his offer nor did you want to make him feel embarrassed so you came up with a solution. "Hey.. how about I take it to the lab with me? I could eat it there without the trouble of my mask, sound good? And I could tell you my thoughts on it once we meet again!" you say with a gentle smile.
Neteyam gazed at you, thinking about what you had said. "Hm, that would be a good idea." His body relaxed as his back straightened. As if he was trying to look more proper and appealing but you paid no mind to it, only focusing on and admiring the plate of food. "Hey, Neteyam?" you ask while turning your head and looking up. He hums and nods slightly, motioning for you to continue.
"Is it okay.." You probably sound so stupid and rude right now. "If I leave? I know it's rude! But if I want to eat it.. I should probably eat it while it's still hot." You hold in your breath while waiting for his reply, the silence has a strong grip on your throat as your face turns red from embarrassment. I probably shouldn’t have said that. An overwhelming feeling of guilt washes over you. How could you just hurt his feelings like that? The feelings of the boy that you loved so dearly? Your heart aches with the thought of Neteyam sulking and ignoring you because of what you had done. Your musing was interrupted by his response which made you feel a bit better and relieved. "That… is also a good idea. I'll escort you.. And I will meet you here tomorrow." Neteyam states, doing a good job at hiding his disappointment although his ear movement and tail doesn't listen.
Lo'ak and Neytiri notices. Of course! She's one of the sky-people, breaking hearts and being arrogant! Just what I had thought. Neytiri said in her mind. Lo'ak on the other hand, just side-eyed them and went back to gobbling his food which caused Jake to slap his arm. Nodding, you stood up with Neteyam following your movements.
Everybody turned their heads around and stared at both of you in confusion. "Sorry everybody.. I'm going now, Again, I deeply apologize." you murmur before bowing slightly. Tuk whined along with Lo'ak while Kiri, Mo'at and Jake nodded and said their goodbye's. Neytiri on the other hand smiled happily but did not say goodbye.
Neteyam waved before walking off with you beside him. As you two walked through the forest and navigated where your lab was, you were looking downcast the entire time, only looking up when you thought you had seen your lab. You were embarrassed. You felt guilty. And you were sure Neteyam felt the same way except he may be blaming you.
When you stood outside the door that led inside the lab you finally mustered up the courage to face Neteyam who was already looking at you. Oh. Your heart skipped a beat, how freckles were glowing brightly that adorned his face. The darkness wrapped around every part of your body and face yet you could still see his bioluminescent freckles and god, was he pretty.
Gulping down nothing you smiled sheepishly before opening the door, "I'll uh.. thank you for the food, really, I'm so sorry that I left abruptly. I'll tell you about the meal and we can meet up tomorrow as usual! Thanks, again." and with that he nodded and you opened the door. Neteyam reached out for you and opened his mouth but nothing came out. He retracted his hand when you had already stepped inside and turned around to close the door.
"Bye.." you mumbled, click. The door closed. Neteyam heaved a sigh and closed his eyes. He was unsure whether or not he had failed his first courting step but he was determined and was confident in himself. But then again, maybe you will like the meal which means that you've accepted his advances!
Entering the lab you noticed how little scientists there were. Some were still typing and checking some plants and fruits while some of the chairs were empty. You didn't care though, all that mattered right now was taking off that damn mask and eating the delicious looking food. You ran into your room and took off your mask quickly before plopping down on your bed and took a look at the meal, it was still nice and hot. Thank god. You picked up a piece of meat before putting it in your mouth and chewed. Your taste buds were immediately overwhelmed by all the spices and flavors, and the texture was amazing. You could've sworn you saw stars as you chewed and swallowed. Sooner or later you ate more and more and finished everything. Wiping your mouth with a tissue you patted your stomach, "that was amazing.. I'll have to tell Neteyam about that tomorrow!" you thought. But as usual a problem had happened. You went feeling well, well, more like your stomach. It felt weird.. It made your stomach churn uncomfortably even as you lay on your back or on your side. No matter what position, you still felt uncomfortable and you were definitely not enjoying it.
You decided to just sleep through it, since there was nothing better to do. You grabbed some of the extra pillows you kept near your bed and set it near your stomach and head, trying to make yourself comfortable. And even though you weren't comfortable you still managed to fall asleep.
While you slept uncomfortably but without any interruptions, Neteyam on the other hand was quite the opposite. On his way back to his hut the only thing on his mind was you, both good and bad thoughts. He remembered how happy he felt when you accepted the plate of food of the meat he had successfully caught and killed, and you were there to see it. He could barely contain his excitement when you happily took the plate and scanned it, he could see the glimmer in your eyes as you stared at it more and more. But he also remembered feeling nervous. Neteyam is not the type to get nervous but this was his crush, and this was his first time courting. His heart was racing as he patiently waited for your response as he hunted, as he patiently waited for you to eat the food. He was patient. And he didn’t mind, as long as you were satisfied. Neteyam thought he had done a good job with successfully killing the Sturmbeest with you there to witness his skills, when you gladly took the plate of food with the meat of the animal that he hunted on it. So when you didn’t take a bite, when you asked if you could leave, his heart sank. Was it not good enough? Did you not want to be around him? Or his family? No, that wouldn’t make sense. He has been with you ever since he laid eyes on you. So what could it possibly be that made you want to leave? But he felt more relieved when you told him that you would eat the meal at the lab and tell him your thoughts about it but still, he wants to see your reaction, he wants to be there to see whether you enjoy it or not. Neteyam leaves the lab with many things on his mind, his head downcast as he thinks about all the possibilities. Neteyam will never give up, he will never give up on you. When Neteyam reaches his place he immediately flops down on the bed, not bothered to say goodnight to his parents or siblings. And as he falls asleep the only thing that lulls him asleep is the sound of water trickling down the stream and the leaves rattling as the wind rushes past them. The last thing he can think about is you and how else he could impress you before his heavy-eyelids take over.
The whole night was terrible. Sometimes your stomach ache would return and sometimes it wouldn’t. You had to get up multiple times to go to the toilet and your stomach was definitely not okay. And along with your terrible stomach ache you had a minor headache as well. You dreaded the thought of not showing up to Neteyam’s hut but with all your problems you were sure that it was going to happen. You felt too ill to go walk out and to even stand up at most times. During the middle of the night you clutched onto your stomach and stood up. You had to see if anyone was awake so maybe that they could tell Neteyam and his siblings that you wouldn’t be able to come. As you stood up your stomach hurt even more, wincing, you clutched your stomach tighter and made your way around to the main area where you, fortunately, saw another scientist typing on their computer before moving to a tube where an avatar remained. “Ace..?” you whispered, your voice was hoarse and dry. He immediately turned around and looked at you. “Oh shit.. are you okay?” he asked, his voice was filled with worry as he walked over to you and placed his hand on your shoulder. “Do I look okay?” you chuckle and swatted his hand off. He hummed and observed your face. “Favor?” you asked, he nodded. “I’m not feeling the best, so if you could please tell Neteyam and his siblings–you know who they are right?“ he nodded again, “good. Tell them that I’m feeling sick and that I won’t be able to see them today.. or a few days.. thank you.” You didn’t give Ace a chance to speak as you already turned away and walked off to your room. “Alright..” Ace sighed before continuing his work. The next day you slept in your bed with the occasional knocks there and then, to tell you that food was ready. Your head was panging harshly every time you got up which made you hold your head tightly. As you sat there, slept, ate, drew and did anything, you felt guilty. You already felt bad enough from last night and now that you’re not seeing them? It hurts you, and you’re sure that it’s hurting them as well, but there was nothing you could do, but you wish you could. Neteyam stood outside his hut waiting for you, and when you didn’t show up he walked over to where the makeshift path was that connected the lab to the village. He stood there, waiting for you, and he waited and waited and when you didn’t show up he felt a tug at his heart. But he didn’t let this affect him, rather, he stood there for almost a two hours before Lo’ak yells at him to come back inside. He was reluctant to go but did so anyways, looking back occasionally to see i you were going to come but you never did. He knew it. You did not enjoy the food, in fact, you hated it and you probably did not want to see him ever again which explains your absence. But that isn’t enough to ruin his determination. Although he is quite sad at the fact that you did not show up for today, this was just one of the many ways to court and he will do just about anything just to see you satisfied, to hear your praises and see how he can be your potential mate. A few hours past and Neteyam stayed with his siblings, playing with his younger sister and scolding both Kiri and Lo’ak when they argued with the other na’vi. But he just could not shake off the feeling that you were going to come any moment, always looking over his shoulder in the hopes of seeing you there with your oh, so sweet smile and a friendly wave, watching as Tuk runs over to you and engulfed you with her hug. But it doesn’t happen. Rather, every time he looks back and doesn’t see you he frowns. “Bro, you have got to stop looking behind you! She won’t come, not yet anyways..” Lo’ak said in an annoyed tone, Kiri nodded. Neteyam only rolled his eyes before going back to picking the grass. Suddenly they heard the rustle of leaves behind them, their ears all pointed to the direction of the sound. Neteyam stood up quickly and stood in front of his siblings. He squints, trying to see who was hiding behind the bushes. Lo’ak had grabbed his knife while Tuk hid behind Kiri. They all sucked in their breaths in order for their breaths to not be heard but they all soon exhaled loudly upon seeing who it was, it was the scientist, Ace. “Who are you?” asked Neteyam, holding a bow with the arrow pointing at the man’s head. He immediately froze. “I-im just a friend of y/n! She told me to come here to tell you that she’s sick and she won’t be able to see you guys for maybe a few days..” he blurted out before shrinking slightly, trying to make himself appear smaller, like a prey. Neteyam and his siblings all exchanged looks and nodded, “thank you, now leave!” he stated before turning around to face his siblings. The scientist made a sound of relief and scrambled away. “Y/n’s sick?” Lo’ak asked, “I hope she’s okay!! I want to see her!” Tuk said, Kiri shook her head, “we can’t Tuk.. she’s sick.” Tuk looked down and sighed, “okay..” Sick? Y/n is sick? Neteyam thought to himself, it was his fault. Again, he was stupid. How could he have not thought of that possibility? The human digestive system, what you call it, is different to the na’vi’s. Oh how stupid he is. Gulping down nothing Neteyam quickly excused himself before rushing off to the village. Sick, sick, sick. There has got to be medicine for her! He thought as he ran to where the Tsahìk was. He was out of breath when he entered the room, the Tsahìk who was tending the wounded boy and the boy himself looked up at Neteyam. The boy’s eyes widen at the sight of the ‘Mighty warrior’ himself, standing right in front of him. “Neteya–!” the boy yelled before getting cut off by Mo’at, “what is it this time, boy? What are you in a rush for?” Mo’at asked while still spreading a translucent ointment on the boys wound. “Mo’at- Grandmother. Do you have some ‘umtsa? It’s urgent!” he hurriedly asked, Mo’at raised her brows before answering, “yes I do.. why is it that you need it?” Neteyam only shook his head, “for y/n–she’s sick.” She sighed and got up, unfolding one of the leaves which showed a variety of herbs. She selected a few before going to another place and placing them in a grinder bowl, Mo’at started to crush the herbs together and added some water. “Here, tell her to drink it, head ache, stomach ache, any pain will be gone.” Neteyam grabbed the bowl full of herbs and water, bowed slightly and thanked her. “Irayo, Mo’at.” Neteyam ran further into the forest, looking down occasionally to see if he was on the right path even though he has followed the same route for years now, remembering the scent and the pattern of trees and bushes. He clutched onto the bowl and covered the top, not wanting to let go of it and let it spill. You needed it, to heal, from his stupid mistake. He only hoped you weren’t mad at him, there may as well be a chance where you at least talk to him. You may even tell him that you liked the food! When he was right in front of the door that led inside the lab he closed his eyes, took a breath and exhaled, trying to let all the anxiety he had bundled up in his chest and mind slip away. Opening his eyes he lifted his hand and balled his fist before knocking. Please.. I hope you aren’t mad at me y/n.

Dbd Male Survivors first impressions bf headcanons:
___________________
Dwight Fairfield
He’s very cautious, but still eager to greet you since you’re new to the fog
Immediately introduces you to everyone so you’re all on the same page
He’s intrigued about your background and begins asking you questions about anything and everything to get to know you(seems like more of an interview than light banter but you don’t mind)
Your first trial is with him and he quickly assumes a leading position and shows you the ropes
Extremely patient with you(which you appreciate)
No matter what he was very encouraging
Slowly but surely he felt himself developing a small crush for you
____________________
Jake Park
Jake didn’t immediately warm up to you, he’s just a wary person by nature
And he wasn’t malicious by any means, just kept his distance
But after the sight of you being startled by a crow he knew he had to intervene
When he finally got the chance to see you in a trial he sought you out
He was leaning behind a brick wall as he waved you over, you were a bit concerned but followed him anyway
You both took a stroll before reaching an area near a crow
“They can be a little frantic but if you can compose yourself than they won’t fly away”
You nod and follow his lead
He grabs your hands and outstretches them towards the crow
The crow quirks it’s head at you both, looking to Jake and then you before hopping into your palms
“See, you’re a natural”
Jake finds himself smiling at the sight, he’s swooning alright
And when you turn to him with the biggest smile on your face, he falls even harder
____________________
Ace Visconti
Since you’re the newbie he’s always gifting you items in chests whenever he’s in a trial with you
It’s warms his heart to see how appreciative you are
You’re amazed how how he always seems to find the greatest things
Whenever you ask how, he always dodges by hitting you with a cheesy flirtatious line that always makes you roll your eyes
“Hey, wanna see a cool party trick?”
You quirk a brow at him as he grins
He starts taunting the killer and after a long chase gets caught and hooked
You run for the unhook and when you arrive he’s got this cocky grin plastered on his face
“Prepare to be amazed…” he mumbles
He begins to attempt to unhook himself to which he ends up hurting himself twice
You start to reach out but he begins to attempt again and actually pulls himself off
He leaps into your arms, tackling you both into the ground
“Amazed?”
You frown at him and start stitching up his wound while scolding him for being reckless
He finds you incredibly attractive for being this concerned for his wellbeing
____________________
David King
Despite you being new, he doesn’t immediately put himself in harms way for you
You need to prove yourself worthy enough to be protected
Once you start pulling your own weight during trials he takes notice
Something unexpected happened in one trial however, you protected him when he was on death hook
He wasn’t used to this kind of treatment but he didn’t dislike it
Just when he thought his time was up, you appeared with a flashlight in hand and got your first successful flashlight save
You both rushed to the exit gates but before you could make it out, you took a down for David
He didn’t want to leave you behind but was pushed out by the killer
When you returned to the campfire he gave you a pat on the back and applauded you for your bravery
“Cheeky bastard…puttin’ yerself in arms way fer me…”
Now he’s definitely got a soft spot for you
____________________
Adam Francis
Adam’s very quiet on the outside but has a lot going on inside
At first he watches how you do tasks, not really saying anything which makes you nervous
He’s very hands on with his teaching methods
While working on a generator together he grabs your hands and adjusts them
“If you keep your hands down like this, you won’t burn yourself with the wire”
Your lips form an ‘O’ shape as you find yourself in a groove
His heart warms at seeing you learn from him and he doesn’t stop after that
He’s always teaching you something new, which you appreciate
That’s not all, he also makes diversions to keep you out of harms way
He’s got his pockets stuffed with pebbles just for you, what a sweetheart

Jeff Johansen
Jeff typically liked to keep to himself, unless he was around someone with similar interests to him
Kate for example, literally best friends
They could talk about music for hours
While on one of these music excursions, you joined in
The three of you all had an amazing and engaging conversation that everyone enjoyed, even outsiders
Seeing how passionate you were about your music taste made Jeff kinda interested in you
Once while he was carving some art into a distant log you joined him and asked questions about his art
This dude is such a softie for people interested in his art, especially when they ask questions
He’ll go in depth about his processes and you’ll just listen intently
He realizes how long he was talking for and turns red
“Sorry for talking so much…I’m sure you didn’t wanna hear that much…”
You assure him that you didn’t mind
And just like that, he melts like putty

Felix Richter
Felix is a quiet yet intense person, whether in or out of a trial
But most of the time, he’s introverted like most of the other male survivors
He didn’t really think much of you at first, noticing how much you struggled
But he chose to help where could
Oh you used up that medkit you spend your precious bloodpoints on? Built to last now
You remember him doing it the first time, when you complained about how you used everything in the medkit
“Can I see? I’ll bring it back in a sec…”
You reluctantly handed it to him and watched him scurry off to the nearest locker before coming back to you and opening it like a briefcase
“Almost good as new”
You grab it in awe with your mouth slightly agape “H-How did you do that?”
He just shrugs with a smile
Once on Léry’s Memorial Institute he watched you walk around in circles trying to find a generator
You groaned in frustration “I’m so close to giving up”
He hears you and gets off his generator to come help you
“Follow me”
You perk up and follow suit instantly
You both work together before you asked him how he finds generators
“In my spare time I make floor plans of each realm and log every generator location”
“Wow that’s amazing Felix!”
He was used to receiving praise like this before he came to the fog and even now but it felt somehow different when you said it
He could feel his heart beat in his chest whenever he was around you, and no the killer didn’t have dark devotion…

Jonah Vasquez
Jonah is an amazing teammate and quick to help you when he sees you
He’ll guide your hands to the correct motions so you don’t mess up but notices your looking more at him
“Hey pay attention…” he mutters before looking away
Out of trials Jonah kept to himself, if not then he was seen with Adam having some sort of academic conversation
Whenever you joined him he was very appreciative and never let it go unsaid
“You should come by with Adam and I some more!”
He loves positive affirmations especially from you, he melts like putty whenever you praise him

Vittorio Toscano
He was very unsure how to approach everyone else, including you considering you all were from different time periods
But he had ways of showing his consideration such as;transferring gen progress to help you finish a gen, telling you where the killer was, and even providing moral support while being chased
He enjoyed your calm demeanor, it was refreshing from the chaos but when you freaked out he didn’t mind leveling you out
“Don’t worry, think about how peaceful it will be when we escape, I know you can do it.”
You both talked whenever out of trials, he always had something to teach you about the fog
He also liked talking about his life before the fog and he enjoyed hearing about your life before the fog
He also had some poetry that he would read to you(although he would never admit you were his muse)

—LOVING YOU IS ENOUGH
frat!jake seresin x f!reader
dagger squad college!au
summary: a week after the fight that tore you apart, jake finds out about the accident. (part 2 of a losing game)
wc: 9.3k
warning(s): 18+, fem!reader, no y/n (reader goes by nickname ace), recommended to read a losing game first, angst galore, swearing, mentions of alcohol, drunk driving (don't do it), bad parental relationships, academic pressure, hospitals, description of injuries
part of the loving you universe || find it on ao3 here
𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊, 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒, 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐁𝐋𝐎𝐆𝐒 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃!
Jake Seresin used to think he had no regrets in his life. Every time he was close to feeling as if that were so, the universe found a way to turn it around and prove to him that he made the right choice. Choosing to go to USC for instance, instead of staying in his home state of Texas, he thought was the biggest mistake he had made in his life. Then USC led him to Delta Chi where he made lifelong friends, and ultimately he met you. So no, Jake Seresin had no regrets in life. Yet as he sat under the fluorescent white lights of the sterile hospital waiting room, Jake was able to think of one.
All the days passed by in a blur, with Jake finding himself in a robotic routine that helped him get through the day:
Wake up
Go to class
Eat
Do not think about Ace
Nap
Eat
Do not think about Ace
(attempt to) Sleep
It wasn’t the healthiest of routines, but it was enough to keep him surviving. At least until he began receiving your texts. Your apologies and declarations of love made him weak, making it much harder for him to stand his ground and give himself the space that he told himself he needed. With each passing day, he found it harder to convince himself that space is what he actually wanted. So he silenced your notifications. The bright red badge continued to grow in number and it took all of his power to not give in and click your contact.
By the fifth day, Jake thought he was actually doing pretty well. He was even studying for his finals and going to every single one of his study groups that you had suggested he try. Even as one thing or another always led back to a reminder of you, his self control was much more restrained and he felt just a little bit lighter.
Jake missed you like hell, that was for sure. But maybe this fight was a sign for him to work on himself. To be better not just for you, but for himself as well.
So he did what he thought was best by pulling a page from your book and choosing to throw himself into his work. He shut everyone out, refusing to go to any outings with Javy and the gang. He didn’t answer his phone and barely left his room other than to go to classes or use the bathroom. Jake ignored the fact that in doing so, he was neglecting his physical and mental health. In turn, making this coping strategy of his more harmful than good. While he thought his obsession with his isolation and studying was “making himself better,” he didn’t realize that the only thing he was really doing was actively avoiding the problem at hand.
But as day seven rolled around, Jake’s fake it till you make it attitude came crashing down. Upon returning back to his and Javy’s shared room in the Frat House after his final exam, Jake fell onto his bed and finally let himself feel.
Jake Seresin has never felt so alone. After days of avoiding, he gave himself permission to think about you–to miss you. Remembering the last time he saw you and the last moment you shared, he could feel the tears that began to gather on his lash line. Too tired to hold it in, he let his emotions go. He let the sobs and cries for help he has been burying in his chest break free. He was tired, so damn tired, of pretending like everything was okay. Like he was okay.
He wanted someone to notice that something was off with him, that something happened to make him feel absolutely miserable in his own skin. However, everyone was too caught up in their own whirlwinds of final exams, studying, and relationships to notice that Jake was struggling to stay afloat without his life preserver–without you.
His heart ached and longed for you. Your voice, your touch, your love. If he could take it all back he would. He would’ve come back to you without a second thought. Jake would have gathered you in his arms and sat with you all night long until the two of you could work it out. Because he wasn’t Hangman anymore. He wouldn’t leave you out to dry. Yet somehow he managed to do exactly that.
With the only thing on his mind being you, he finally mustered up the courage to read all of the texts you had sent him days prior. The first few made his heart ache, reading your heartfelt apologies and declarations of love was enough to make him start crying all over again. Teary eyed smiles graced his features at your small anecdotes and pictures of things that reminded you of him.
He could hear your voice and see your mannerisms in his head at each text he reads through.
Jake’s euphoria is interrupted by the fifth call he has received from Natasha. He rolls his eyes before immediately declining her call. Nat probably finally talked to you about what happened and he figured she was calling to rip him a new one. He definitely wasn’t in the mood for that right now.
His smile grows as he scrolls through his phone, especially at the photo of a golden retriever you saw on campus that “looked like him.” A playful scoff leaves him at that as he imagines the way you would’ve jumped up and down on the tips of your toes, clutching onto his arm, as you justified how he was a golden retriever in human form. This was the closest he felt to you in days and he wished for it to never end.
Jake continued on, savoring every good night and “I love you” text, every apology, and every good luck you wished him on his exams. Though one series of texts was enough to have the fullness in Jake’s heart flushed empty. He reads them over and over again, praying that he read them wrong.
I failed my exams, Jake. I don’t know what to do.
His heart skips a beat.
I can’t go home this summer. I won’t. I can’t face my parents, they’ll hate me forever.
But the worst of them all, the one he begs was a prank being played on him by the universe read: I’m taking your silence as a sign that I’ve fucked us up beyond repair. I love you, Jake Seresin, even if you no longer love me.
He’s going to be sick. Sure he was mad, but he never wanted you to ever think that he didn’t love you anymore. That was just a statement that could never be true. Jake was done wallowing. He was done making you both suffer because he wasn’t man enough to confront you. Swallowing his fears and his pride, he begins formulating a text to ask you to meet him at The Hard Deck–somewhere familiar, though not too intimate just yet.
He’s about to press send when a phone call from Javy interrupts his screen. Jake instantly presses decline, however, he barely has another second before Javy’s name pops up again.
With an agitated sigh, Jake finally answers the phone, swearing up and down that whatever he was calling for better be something good. “The hell you want, Javy?”
“Jake–” he starts.
“Look, I’ve been getting calls from Nat all day and I’m assuming that’s why you’re calling me right now,” Jake vents. “But I really, really don’t have time for a lecture from either of you right now, man.”
“Jake.” Javy’s voice shifts into something more somber, more serious. “Ace’s been in an accident.”
It’s as if his feet have processed the information long before his brain did. Jake blacks out, barely recognizing the actions in which he’s pulling on his shoes and rushing out of his room and into the common living area.
The air is knocked out of his lungs, forcing him to grasp for leverage on the edge of the table. Jake can hear Bradley asking what’s wrong but all he can focus on is Javy’s breathing, the sound of people rushing around in the background. The phone slips from his hand and he feels like his entire rib cage is caving in on itself, crushing his heart. Black spots swim on his vision and there’s a hand on his chest telling him to breathe.
“Come on, Seresin,” Bradley’s voice comes through. “Breathe.”
A heavy exhale escapes him as he desperately tries to catch his breath. He’s muttering an incoherent string of words, stumbling his way through the room and trying to get to the front door.
Bradley is right on his tail, yanking on his own pair of shoes and grabbing the phone that Jake haphazardly dropped on the floor in the middle of his attack. “You gotta tell me what’s going on, man, you’re scaring me.”
Jake abruptly stops at the front door, turning to look at Bradley over his shoulder with something worse than heartbreak in his eyes. He doesn’t say anything more other than, “Ace. It’s Ace.”
That’s all Bradley needs to hear before he’s grabbing the car keys from Jake’s hands and dialing Javy’s number back into Jake’s phone.
Jake could hardly remember when he got to the hospital, let alone how he was able to navigate himself to get to the ER without help when the only thing on his mind was you. He couldn’t even recall what Javy had said about the extent of your injuries, just that you were still unconscious from the car accident.
Upon reaching the ER Jake saw Nat sitting in the waiting room with her head in her hands while Javy sat beside her and gently rubbed a comforting hand up and down her back.
Bradley and Jake’s heavy footsteps alert the couple. Nat’s head shoots up, her red rimmed and teary eyes locking on Jake’s. She’s storming over in seconds, pushing at his chest angrily.
“Why the hell didn’t you pick up your phone?”
“Nat–” he starts, only to be silenced with another harsh shove. He takes the brunt of the hit, knowing he deserved every single one and worse. “I’m sorry.” Jake winces at how pathetic he sounds.
Natasha shakes her head with disappointment clouding her features. “Sorry isn’t gonna fix this.”
Javy joins the group, nodding at Bradley as he gestures for him to sit down. He places a hand on Jake’s shoulder asking him to do the same. He only brushes Javy’s hand off, taking a step closer to Nat.
“Is she…is she okay?” He braces himself for the worst. Jake’s heart beats so fast against his ribcage that he swears he could feel the muscle begin to ache.
Natasha inhales shakily before collapsing into the nearest seat. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?” The fear in his veins begins to mix with annoyance and fury. The rational side of him knew he shouldn’t be mad at Nat, but the only thing occupying his thoughts was the idea of you not being okay. Having to hear that you were in the hospital was already bad enough. He doesn’t think he could take anything more.
“I mean, I don’t know!” Nat’s voice rises with that same frustration and fear. “All the lady on the phone said was that she was in a car accident with four other people from our school. From what I understand, the others made it out okay, but the car that t-boned them…” Her voice wavers, recalling the words she heard earlier that evening and imagining the worst. “The other car hit Ace’s side head on. She took most of the impact. The other four made it out okay with barely any scratches.”
Jake’s hands are shaking as he braces them on his knees, desperate to catch his breath. He didn’t realize his knees had hit the floor until he felt the sting from the solid ground. But he didn’t have it in him to care about anything other than you right now. Jake desperately tries to piece everything together from your texts from the night before but nothing was making sense. Everything he was trying to understand came out between shallow breaths. “Where did she go? Why was she out so late? Who was she with? Why weren’t any of you with her?”
“Jake,” Bradley interferes, squeezing his shoulder as a gentle reminder to breathe.
Jake catches the way Javy clenches his jaw from the corner of his eye which has him demanding answers. “Javy.” There was something his friends weren’t telling him, making the searing hot anger in his blood begin to boil.
Nat saves her boyfriend by giving up the information for him. “Before you get upset, you need to understand that she didn’t tell any of us where she was going. None of us had really seen her lately and just assumed she was stressed out from finals. We didn’t think things were this bad.”
“What aren’t you guys telling me?”
“Jake,” Javy starts cautiously. He kneels down beside his friend, speaking nice and slow, almost like he was conversing with a child. “If we tell you, you have to promise to stay calm.”
He scoffs in disbelief, rolling his eyes at his best friend. “How do you think I’ll be able to stay calm? I just found out my girlfriend has been in an accident and no one wants to tell me what the hell is going on!”
“Javy, just tell him. He deserves to know,” Bradley sighs.
“Damn right, I deserve to know. I’m her boyfriend!” Jake’s seething as he gets up and starts pacing back and forth. People are beginning to stare but he doesn’t give a damn.
It’s Nat’s turn to grow agitated. “Really? Because last I heard the two of you were on a break.”
“Wait, what?” Javy looks at his best friend in bewilderment.
Nat shoots him a look that says, I’ll explain it all later.
“Doesn’t matter if we were on a break or not. She’s still my girl and I need to know what happened.”
The conviction in his tone and the strength on his face are enough to make Javy and Nat cave. Hiding this from him would only make things worse than they already were.
Nat doesn’t dare to meet Jake’s eye as she says, “She was with some Alpha Sigs and their girlfriends. Everyone in the car was intoxicated. Even the guy at the wheel. They were coming from the Alpha Sig house. I don’t know what the hell they were doing in a car like that but I know the Sigs are in interrogation with the police right now.”
Bradley clenches his fist. “Those bastards.”
“Ace was the only one whose condition was critical.” The word critical falls short on her tongue, being whispered into the tense atmosphere.
Jake’s silence is unnerving. They were expecting an outburst of some sort. Some screaming, maybe even some physical aggression yet not of it came. The sound that fell from Jake’s lips was worse than anything they could’ve imagined.
It was as if everyone in the room heard his heartbreak as he was unable to control the tears that fell from his eyes. The feeling of overwhelming guilt rushed over him at the realization that he should have been there. That this was all his fault. You would have never humored the idea of an Alpha Sig party in the first place if the two of you had just talked everything out. But you weren’t thinking straight, and neither was he, leading the both of you towards the path of least resistance. Instead, Jake had to be stubborn and sensitive. He couldn’t just man up and admit that you were more important than his ego and pride.
Nothing matters to him anymore upon his epiphany other than needing to see you. You were the only one that could help him.
“I need to see her,” he says through nasally breaths.
During Jake’s spiral, Nat had let tears of her own fall. “They’re not letting any of us see her right now. Just family.” The last part tastes like acid on her tongue.
“We’re her family. They need to let me see her,” he begs. Jake remembers you telling him that he and your friends were truly the only family you have ever known.
“Biological, Jake. We can’t. Not until her parents get here.” She doesn’t even try to hide the scowl on her face.
“Well, where the hell are they?” Jake questions.
“Bora Bora? Or was it Barbados? I have no fucking clue. The nurse said it sounded like they were more upset about their vacation being cut short than their own daughter being in the hospital.”
Jake hates that he wasn’t too surprised to hear that. How ironic that the real people you considered family were here and yet they wouldn’t even let them see you.
Jake swallows, trying his best to ignore the stickiness of his throat. “Then I guess I’m staying here until then.”
Javy, Natasha, and Bradley share a look of uncertainty at his words. Certainly, it wasn’t healthy for him to be there all day and all night waiting for your parents to get there. It was Jake’s determined look and sureness that also let them know that there was no talking him out of this. The three make a silent, unspoken pact to watch over the boy until then.
Jake wasn’t giving up. Not now, not ever. Leaving you was the biggest mistake he has ever made. He was never going to let that happen again.
Seventy-two hours later and Jake was still left in the dark about your condition. He desperately wanted to sneak into your room and see you. He was close to lying to the nurses and saying he was your cousin if that was what he needed to do. But the rest of his friends convinced him to be patient. Though it hurt, the pain lessened with them around.
Like clockwork, the group would come to the hospital to wait for any news and to take care of Jake. The mornings would consist of Javy and Natasha bringing Jake a new change of clothes and breakfast. His afternoons were spent with Bradley dragging him back home to take a quick shower while Bob stayed at the hospital until they returned. The first day was like pulling teeth with Jake. The scene would have been quite amusing, if not for the seriousness of their situation. Bradley looked like he was dragging a child through the hospital with how stubborn Jake was being. A quick phone call to Javy had him fixing his attitude.
“You don’t want the first impression Ace gets of you after so long to be that you stink, do you?” he had said.
So he reluctantly obliged, returning back to the hospital freshly bathed under 45 minutes flat.
Jake’s evenings were spent with Mickey and Reuben force feeding him dinner and trying to distract him with mediocre board games.
The next day, the cycle would repeat. Then again on the next. Their distractions were welcomed and he appreciated how they have been there for the both of you through everything. When night fell and the waiting room emptied, Jake stayed right where he was.
He would bury himself into the neck of his sweatshirt and try to get as much sleep as he could. Sleep didn’t come easy to Jake. All of the “what if’s” and the fear of missing the moment you’d wake clouded his thoughts to the point where sleep just seemed absolutely impossible.
The only ones left in the waiting room were the few straggling family members waiting for their loved ones and the nurses who passed by every now and then. The dim lighting and eerie silence, bar the sound of heart monitors and the occasional code call, were more than enough to have the voices in Jake’s head amplify in volume.
It was his own voice, berating him for not checking up on him sooner. For being hard headed and too full of pride to approach you first. It was Javy’s, telling him that you got into an accident. It was your last I love you. No, not last. He won’t entertain that idea.
No matter how much he willed himself not to, he couldn’t help but think to the last time the both of you spoke. Jake hated himself for not saying those three words back to you. He never thought that one choice would lead to the possibility of never hearing your voice again, touching your soft skin, or seeing your bright eyes full of life. Of never loving you again. What hurt him the most though, was the possibility that your last thought of him may be that he didn’t love you anymore. That was far from the truth.
He loved you more than he thought he was capable of loving someone. Jake has had his fair share of girlfriends and flings, but not one of them made him feel the way you did with something as simple as a look in his direction. That’s all it took with you. One look and Jake knew you were it for him. Nothing else mattered.
Jake hated himself for making you doubt that. Jake hated himself for leaving that night and most of all he hated himself for not saying it back. Now, all he wanted to do was shower you in love and reassure you that despite the sting of your words, he never stopped loving you. He can’t imagine what he would’ve done if he was in your shoes. Right now, he wished he was. If he could be in your place and take your pain, he would.
But he can’t and if something worse were to happen to you, Jake would be the one to live with that pain and burden. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if it came to that.
It’s funny to think that three years ago, Jake would have rolled his eyes and scoffed at the image of himself being hopelessly in love. Now you were his everything–the thing he couldn’t imagine his life without.
It was a miracle that he was able to fall asleep that night with no nightmares. The exhaustion must have finally caught up to him because his sleep was so deep that he woke up to Javy frantically shaking his shoulders to get him to wake.
His eyes snapped open as he came to. His senses readjusted to the environment around him before remembering where he was and why he was there.
Javy sounded like he was underwater as Jake shook himself awake. His vision finally clears and he sees the rest of his friends already there in the room. A quick glance outside was enough to tell him he slept through breakfast and probably lunchtime too.
Jake, still feeling groggy, was completely disregarding everything his best friend was saying. He assumed he was being given the same spiel he’s heard for the past three days about needing to eat and take care of himself.
Then Javy says something that has Jake snapping wide awake.
He barely gives him another chance to repeat himself before Jake is scrambling to his feet with bleary eyes and disheveled hair. He had no other cares in the world right now other than to confirm that what Javy had said is true.
The sweet nurse who Jake had familiarized himself with during his stay gently caught him by the wrist and tugged him towards the hall.
“Her parents got here an hour ago, but since she woke she’s only been asking for you,” Nurse Donna informed him.
A small flutter works its way around Jake’s rib cage and down to his stomach upon hearing her words. He can no longer contain the nerves that flood through his system as he continues to clumsily follow Donna, tripping over his own feet in the process.
When Donna finally lets go of his wrist, he stops outside the door marked with your last name for just a moment. Hesitation and fear cloud his mind. Maybe Donna was mistaken. What if you weren’t actually asking for him? What if she had misheard? What if–
“It’s okay, honey. Go see your girl.” Donna urges him with an encouraging smile.
His girl. God, he missed hearing that. He gives her a small nod of gratitude and exhales softly. Jake’s shaky hand reaches for the silver knob. Giving it a forceful push, he makes his way through the door frame. His feet skid to stop at the threshold and his breath hitches in his throat as he’s met with the sight of those beautiful eyes he’s been praying to see for days on end.
Two Years Ago
Jake didn’t understand why you were so cold towards him. You were even able to warm up to his frat brothers Javy and Reuben. He was dying for it to be his turn. It got to the point where Jake would just breathe while standing beside you and you’d let out a loud groan and move beside Bradley.
Jake hated to admit that he was jealous of Bradley’s ability to get along with you so easily. After your little moment in the library, he thought things between the two of you would be easier, lighter. Instead, it became the absolute opposite and Jake was close to doing something stupid just so you would pay attention to him again. He doesn’t know why, but ever since that day in the library, he found himself desperate for your attention. He was filled with the satisfaction he used to get when flirting with sorority girls. He hasn’t been able to feel that since you.
He doesn’t know what he did to make you dislike him so much. If only he knew, then maybe he could do something to rectify your predetermined notions of him.
Even now as he attempted to butter up an Alpha Phi girl, his green eyes were constantly drawn back to your figure on the other side of the aisle. The high pitched voice of the girl in front of him turned into white noise as Jake zeroed in on you. Suddenly, getting this girl to come to the party tonight was the last thing on his mind.
You hadn’t noticed him yet. If you had, you probably would’ve made a B-line toward the exit already. You were standing on your tiptoes with your tongue slightly poking out from the corner of your mouth. Brows furrowed in concentration, you desperately tried to grab a book on the top shelf. After a lousy first attempt, you try a second time. This time, you rock back on your heels for momentum before launching yourself upwards. Your second try is just as unsuccessful as your first.
Jake shakes his head with amusement as he watches you try for a third time. Your third attempt was just as successful as the last two, leaving you standing empty handed.
“Hey, Becky? Why don’t we finish this conversation another time, yeah?” He gently pats the girl on the arm, all while keeping his gaze trained on you. Jake barely waits for the girl’s response, missing her disgruntled correction of, My name’s Brittany! that falls from her lips.
You’re staring heatedly at the book on the top shelf. He strides over to you, patiently waiting for you to notice him. He stands beside you, also looking up intently at the book, with his arms crossed over his chest. His lips quirk up at the corners as he notes the way your body tenses upon sensing his presence.
All you do is roll back your shoulders as if preparing for one last jump. Jake stops you before you can even make your attempt.
“Sit tight, Ace, your savior’s here.” His left hand hovers over the small of your back while he extends his right arm to reach the book you were looking for. An over dramatic sigh leaves his lips as he brings his arm down and hands the book out to you. His green eyes twinkle with delight as you cross your arms in annoyance.
You turn to meet his gaze, your own stare burning into his.
Jake’s stomach does the strangest thing upon catching your eye. He suddenly finds himself mesmerized by their beautiful color. The intensity of your stare makes him feel like you can see right through him, all the way into the depths of the most hidden parts of his soul. He could get lost in them if you let him.
Breaking eye contact at the intensity of his gaze, you scoff, snatching the book from his hands. Swiftly turning on your heels, you make your way toward the end of the aisle. You stop right at the end and pause before turning over your shoulder to see Jake still eyeing you in bewilderment. “Careful on your way out, Seresin. Your head’s getting so big I’m afraid it might be a bit of a tight squeeze.”
For once, his brain seems to have shut off and he’s unable to think up a cocky or witty remark. He watches you go with intrigue and admiration. His stomach does another somersault as he recalls the exact shade of your eyes and the sway of your hips.
You are going to be the death of him.
“Jake?”
Just like that, he can finally breathe again. Tears gather in his eyes faster than his feet can bring him to the edge of the bed. Jake’s sweeping your hand that’s not hooked up to the IV in his and he lets out a breath of relief at the feeling of your skin on his. A feeling that he was afraid he’d never get to have again.
“Jake,” you sigh, the moment his hand is in yours. You breathe his name like it was your first full breath of fresh air. It falls from your lips like a prayer. Soft, sweet, and full of conviction.
He gives himself a moment to scan your body. Jake’s heart fractures even more than he thought was possible given everything he’s been through this past week. Upon seeing the state you were in, anguish crashes down onto his body. His shoulders feel heavy and his knees are weak at the sight of your pretty face all battered and bruised from various hits you took. There’s a nasty gash on your forehead that was barely holding itself together with the bandage that was placed there. Your right arm was in a cast and your left knee was propped up and wrapped up in a bandage of its own. He hopes that this was the worst of your injuries, but he knows that the extent of them goes deeper than what he can see with his naked eye. Your skin was adorned in a variety of scrapes and scratches, all of which Jake desperately wished he could kiss away.
The shallow movements of your chest and the pained whimper that leaves your lips have him carefully running his other hand over the side of your head, softly soothing you. He bends down to gently rest his forehead against yours and the second his skin makes contact with yours, he’s unable to stop the tears that begin to fall. Jake’s eyes squeeze shut and the heaviness that has been pushing on his chest since the moment he walked away from you finally subsides. His grip on your hand tightens ever so slightly as if to tell himself you’re here, you’re alive, you’re okay. The same words leave him in a hushed whisper that he shares between the two of you. Though they were more of a reassurance for himself.
A shaky exhale escapes you at his words and the way you’re gasping for air signifies that you’ve started crying as well. Part of it was from the tight pain in your chest and the other from the utter disbelief that this was real–that Jake was really here.
The first thing you thought of the second you woke was Jake. You were positive that he wasn’t going to be there, but you desperately begged for him anyway. The shock on your parents' faces that clouded your vision quickly turned to disgust as you refused to listen to their words. Your mother had tried to reach out to you, but you thrashed in her touch and frantically shook your head as you cried out for Jake.
You were in near hysterics and your parents were staring at you in shock and horror but you didn’t care. You didn’t care that they were there when all you wanted was Jake.
Your mother begged Nurse Donna to sedate you. The sour look on Donna’s face was missed by your mother as she left the room. She thought that Donna had gone to grab the sedative. However, when she returned without a syringe and with a boy, your mother almost fainted.
You, on the other hand, thought you were dreaming when you saw him walk through that door. You just couldn’t believe that even after everything, Jake was there. Then he touched you and you broke down. His scent invaded you. His touch that you’ve craved like a drug for days on end was finally yours again. The reality that he was there was more than enough to have you breaking down again.
“I’m sorry,” you slur, still slightly drowsy from the medications. “I’m sorry,” you mutter over and over again as he places his forehead on yours.
You feel him pull you closer and shush you gently as tears of his own run down his face. You did this. You made him cry. If your limbs weren’t so heavy and numb you would’ve brushed away all the tears that ran down his perfect face until his eyes were finally dry.
Jake’s elation shatters at your words. You had absolutely nothing to be sorry for right now. If anything, he should be the one on his knees begging for your forgiveness. He opens his mouth to speak before getting cut off by someone in the corner of the room clearing their throat.
Jake’s attention was so focused on you that he hadn’t noticed your parents standing there this entire time. Hot, white fury fuels him at the sight of them looking more bothered than worried for their daughter.
“You didn’t tell us you had a boyfriend,” your mother practically sneers at him.
Jake wills himself to pull it together, for your sake.
“Mom–” you start.
“How does that make you feel, son? Knowing your girlfriend didn’t tell her own parents about you?” This time, it’s your father who speaks up, eyeing Jake up and down. “Insignificant, I would say.”
“Dad! Stop it!”
The stress in your voice is evident and the spike of your heart monitor grabs Jake’s attention.
You barely had enough strength to defend Jake against their venomous words. He looks at you with wide eyes, asking for your permission to speak to them. Had this been under different circumstances, Jake wouldn’t need to think twice about biting his tongue. He probably would have snapped back at them too if he didn’t notice the unnecessary stress this entire situation was putting on your shoulders.
You shake your head at him before glancing toward your parents. “Please. Please leave.” You didn’t want them here right now. You didn’t need anyone but Jake right now.
Offended, your mother scoffs. “You’re choosing a boy over your own parents?”
This time, Jake decides to jump to your defense. “I believe she asked you to leave.” He looks over his shoulder, narrowing his gaze at your parents who stand unbothered across the room.
“Why should we listen to you?” Your mother fights back.
You start feeling lightheaded from the entire situation and you lay your head back, sliding out of Jake’s hold slightly. “Please,” you ask with the little strength you have.
Noticing the warmth of your skin leaving him, Jake gently follows the movement of your head and cradles it while helping you lower your head to the pillow. His full attention is back on you as he scans you for any more distress. Jake was getting angrier by the minute. Couldn’t your parents see how much stress they were causing you? Why wouldn’t they just leave? He was close to yelling at them now but was saved by Donna entering the room.
“Your daughter asked you to leave,” she tells them sternly. “Now I suggest you listen before I call security to have you both dragged out of here.”
Your mother’s jaw drops and your father shakes his head with a scowl. Putting his hands up in surrender, your father is the first to leave.
Your mother, however, lingers for just a moment more. “I can’t believe we left the Bahamas for this.” She always had to have the last word.
Once the room is free of their presence you heavily exhale, looking at Donna with a grateful smile.
She nods with a small smile of her own. “I’ll let you kids have a moment. Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll be right outside in case your parents try to come back.”
“Thanks, Donna,” Jake sighs, his eyes never leaving yours.
She winks at the both of you before softly closing the door on her way out.
“Are you–” the both of you say at the same time.
You avert your gaze with a nervous chuckle and Jake smiles, urging you to go first.
You take a moment to observe the boy in front of you. This Jake was not the one you saw the last time. This Jake was tired and worn out. If the dullness of his green eyes and the dark circles that surrounded them weren’t a telltale sign of his exhaustion, it was the paleness of his skin and his sullen cheeks.
“Are you okay?” You ask timidly. For the first time since you started dating, you find yourself feeling incredibly anxious about him. You were the reason why he looked like this, so empty and void of life. You didn’t even deserve for him to be here right now.
Jake shakes his head with a sad smile playing on his lips. “You’re the one in a hospital gown and you’re asking if I’m okay?”
He presses a sweet kiss to your forehead and you almost cry from the contact.
“That’s my Ace, always worrying about me.” So much fondness shines in his eyes, causing you to finally break.
The tears start flowing again, scaring Jake just a little bit.
“Your Ace?” You sob. Somehow, you knew he had already forgiven you, but you still didn’t think you deserved it. “How can you even stand being here with me after everything I did? I hurt you, Jake. I hurt you and I am so, so sorry.”
“Hey,” he whispers, softly stroking your hair. “It’s okay.”
“No, no it’s not okay. Nothing about this is okay!” You hiccup and hiss at the sting it causes in your rib cage.
“Ace, breathe for me sweetheart, come on.” He gently coaxes you with teary eyes of his own. He needs to hold it together for your sake. He needs to be strong for both of you.
“It’s not okay,” you sniffle.
“Shh…” Jake sees how much of a toll this entire thing has taken on you.
Your eyelids are drooping heavily, but you will to keep them open. You’re afraid that once you close them, you’ll wake up to find that this was all just a dream. That Jake was never really here to begin with and that you were all alone.
Jake pulls the empty chair that was beneath your bed closer to him and takes a seat. He encapsulates your hand between both of his and brings them to his lips. “It’s okay, Ace. Sleep,” he guides.
“No.” You tiredly fight against the exhaustion that is threatening to take over. “No.”
“Sleep,” Jake requests again. “I’ll still be here when you wake up.”
“You promise?” You whimper.
“I promise.” He gives your hand another kiss for safe measure, already seeing that your eyes have already begun to close. With his lips still pressed against your skin, he swears, “I’ll be here, Ace. I promise I’m never leaving you again. I love you. So fucking much.”
Jake doesn’t miss the faint smile that ghosts your lips as sleep finally takes control of your body.
Two Years Ago
He finds you lying on the dewy lawn of the Delta Chi house splayed out like a starfish. “What in the…” he mutters to himself as he makes his way towards you.
Jake stands over you, coming into your vision upside down causing you to giggle.
“Ace?”
“Hangman!” You exclaim with a dopey smile on your lips.
He rolls his eyes at the name and crouches down above you. “What are you doing out here all alone?”
You sigh dreamily. “Stargazing.”
Jake catches the scent of cheap beer and jungle juice on your lips, letting him know you were currently far from sober. That makes him worry just a little bit. Last he heard you didn’t drink. You despised it actually.
“How much have you had to drink?” He asks for safe measures.
Another giggle erupts from your lips as you hold up all ten of your fingers and even your feet, wiggling your toes in your sandals. “This many.”
That’s all Jake needs to confirm that you are long gone. “Where’s the rest of your friends?” He glances around looking for any sign of your roommates. All he sees are drunk couples making out on the front porch and the occasional flash of disco lights that escapes through the front windows and open door.
“Dunno,” is all you say with a lazy shrug.
Jake sighs, finding himself caught in a dilemma. He had a smoking hot blonde waiting for him to come back inside and bring her upstairs. So why did he feel so guilty about the thought of leaving you out here to fend for yourself? The two of you were hardly even friends, acquaintances at most. He only saw you after your group project because his friends mingled with your circle of friends after miraculously getting along upon meeting each other.
Yet as he looked down at you staring awe struck up at the sky, he knew he couldn’t just leave you out here alone. Pushing himself off his knees, he groans. “Mind if I join you?”
You shrug. “Mi casa es tu casa. Or no, wait. Tu casa es mi casa. Get it? Cause this is your house?” You laugh at your own joke.
Your laughter is infectious, plaguing Jake with a few chuckles of his own. He lays on the damp ground beside you, resting his arms behind his head. “Not really my house, darling. It’s the fraternity’s.”
“Same thing,” you wave him off.
The two of you lay there in comfortable silence, watching the night sky. Jake had to admit, this was the most fun he has probably had all night even if you were doing nothing but looking at the sky.
Out here with you, Jake felt like he could let his guard down. His cocky, playboy, frat boy persona disappeared. When around everyone else, he felt like he was expected to act a certain way but being out here with you, he knew you expected nothing of the sort.
That was one of the first things that caught him completely off guard when he met you. All it took was one look at him and you were picking him apart, dissecting all of the fronts he put up around others. That’s why you bothered him so much. He barely knew anything about you and somehow, it was like you knew everything about him. You saw through his charms and arrogance, leaving no room for any funny business.
Jake’s shoulders fall from his ears and he lets himself relax.
Hearing you shift beside him, he wants to ask you what was on your mind. His curiosity never failed to make itself known when you were around. Again, he knew that you didn’t drink, so why were you absolutely wasted right now?
The question is on the tip of his tongue, begging to be asked, but he exhales gratefully when you speak up first.
“My parents are assholes who care about nothing but my grades and their image.”
He’s not sure if he was meant to hear what you just said or if you realize it’s him that you’re talking to. So he stays quiet and patiently waits for you to continue.
“It’s parents’ weekend next week and they don’t even bother to answer any of my calls or texts about it. And when I do hear back from them it’s a halfhearted apology that they can’t make because they’re off on the other side of the world.” A dry laugh escapes you. “I don’t know what I was thinking when I invited them. I knew they weren’t going to show up, whether they were actually here or not. I mean… is it too much to ask for them to just show up and be proud of me?”
Jake sits up with a frown on his lips upon hearing your voice crack. He hesitates, unsure of what to say. He was never good at the whole comfort thing, especially when it came to crying girls. He used to try to comfort his sisters when they would cry, but he always just seemed to make things worse. He didn’t want to make you feel worse than you already did. “I’m sure they’re proud of you, Ace. They’d be idiots not to be.”
You scoff, seemingly sobering up just enough to push yourself to sit up beside him. “I guess they’re idiots then.”
Jake’s mouth runs faster than his brain can manage to keep up.“Hey, at least you have parents. I mean...look at Bradley.”
That pulls a snort and a teary laugh from you. “Oh my god! Jesus, Seresin…” You’re laughing. You feel bad that you are, but the delivery of Jake’s words was so nonchalant that you couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “You’re insane.”
He joins in your laughter, glad that he was able to pull your attention from your inner turmoil even if it was just for a minute. “What? Am I wrong?”
“You’re not, but come on. That was so uncalled for,” you shake your head in amusement.
Jake sends you a toothy grin, captivated by the way your smile grows.
“Jake!” The sound of another feminine voice catches both of your attention. The blonde he left inside earlier was running down the porch steps and in their direction. “There you are,” the girl exclaims, throwing her arms around him as she joins him on the ground. She presses an obnoxiously loud kiss to his neck with a smile. “I’ve been waiting for you, Cowboy.”
As if suddenly realizing where you were and who you were with, you tuck your chin to your sternum and avoid his gaze. He grimaces in the other girl’s hold.“Ace–”
You go to stand, still wobbling from the alcohol but you’re coherent enough to know where you were going. “Looks like duty calls, Hangman.”
The girl gives you a cheeky smile as she moves her lips from his neck to the side of his face.
He doesn’t miss the somber note of your tone. Jake watches you sway on your feet as you make your way back inside. He wants to reach out to you, beg you to stay but he holds himself back. With a sigh, he pulls the girl who’s clinging to his side up to her feet and flashes her a halfhearted grin.
Even with his newfound company, Jake couldn’t get you out of his head.
True to his word, Jake never left your side since you woke up. If the doctor’s needed to personally evaluate your condition, he would step outside but immediately come back in once the doctor gave him the okay.
Your parents haven’t made another appearance since that first day and you were relieved. Your friends have been in and out of your hospital room once you were moved to the regular hospital floor from Urgent Care.
Your body was still pretty weak due to the severity of your injuries but you felt stronger than you have in weeks. Being surrounded by your friends, your family, gave you some of that strength back. Most important of all, being with Jake had you feeling invincible.
The doctors were thrilled with your rate of recovery and predicted you would be discharged in the next couple of days.
Though Jake kept his promise to you, you still had a sliver of doubt about where the two of you stood relationship wise. You tried to bring it up a couple of times, but Jake would only respond with a shake of his before telling you not to worry about it now.
You were just a bit afraid that this was his way of letting you down easily. That this was his way of telling you that he loved you, but he just couldn’t be in a relationship with you anymore.
But then he’d do something as small as brushing your hair gently from your face as you ate or held your hand before you fell asleep at night and that little bit of worry would subside, if only for a moment.
You’re laughing at Reuben’s lame attempt to sink Nat’s battleship when Jake gives you a quick kiss on the cheek muttering a soft, “I’ll be right back,” into your ear.
You shoot him a soft smile and nod, before returning your attention to your friends’ antics.
Meanwhile, Jake makes a quick run to the coffee machine down the hall. He barely makes it five steps there when he runs into someone right outside your door.
He looks up and almost spews out an apology before realizing exactly who he ran into.
The look of distaste that falls upon his face is anything but subtle.
Your mother shares a look with your father, who sneers at the sight of him.
Being born and raised by his southern gentleman of a father and kind hearted mother, he knew he still had to show some respect towards your parents despite his dislike for them.
He gives them a nod as a form of greeting and silently prays that they let him slip past them.
“You should leave now before it gets worse,” your mother speaks up.
Jake knew he should probably ignore it. Leave your mother without the satisfaction of getting under his skin. But he couldn’t. He stops in his tracks. Glaring at them from over his shoulder, he hissed, “Excuse me?”
Your mother only shrugs, pulling her handbag tighter over her shoulder. “She’s not worth your time or the trouble. Trust us. As her parents, we would know. How does it make you feel? Knowing you must mean so little to her that she didn’t even mention your existence to her parents.”
Jake was finally tired of biting his tongue. No one, not even your own parents, talked about you like that. Not if he could help it. “With all due respect, I know she didn’t tell you about me and frankly, I don’t blame her considering the way you treat your daughter. Besides, how would either of you know anything? You’re never here so you’d never know just how worth it your daughter is. I would walk through hell for her. Something I know neither of you would ever do.
So no, you don’t know. You don't know just how thoughtful and sweet and caring she is. You don’t know just how incredibly smart she is. Most of all, you would never understand that she is worth everything.”
Jake is breathless at the end of his speech. His chest heaves as he catches his breath and harshly swallows from his passionate spiel. You were everything and the idea that anyone would think otherwise astonished him.
Your mother barely bats an eye. “Well, I guess you wouldn’t mind completely taking her off our hands then. Considering she moved so far away from us for college, you can tell my daughter to not even bother coming back home to visit us because apparently, we’re never here for her anyway.” She storms past Jake in suppressed fury, muttering to herself, “The Bahamas!”
Your father, on the other hand, pauses for a moment. He opens his mouth like he wants to say something and glances through the doorway before looking back at Jake and clearing his throat. “Just, um, just tell her the hospital bill will be taken care of once it comes in the mail.” He gives one last look at your hospital room before scurrying in the same direction your mother had gone.
A sigh of relief escapes Jake’s lips from the encounter, diminishing his prior craving for caffeine.
He makes his way back into the room to see three pairs of eyes settled on him. Jake’s a bit unnerved at all the attention he’s receiving and he’s slightly confused by the way Nat, Reuben, and you were all staring at him.
He nervously chuckles, running a hand down the back of his neck.
Reuben suddenly stands up, grabbing his battleship board. “I think we should continue this outside, right Nat?”
She nods with a smile grabbing her board as well. “Yeah, let’s. We’ll give you two a minute.” Natasha squeezes your hand as she ushers out of the room.
Jake shifts back and forth on his feet, feeling a heat of embarrassment flow through him. “You heard all of that, didn’t you?”
A look he can’t fully decipher on your face. “Yeah, I did.”
“I am so sorry if I crossed a line I just—“
“I love you.” You cut him off teary eyed.
“What?” He breathes, the wideness of his growing smile no longer contained.
You give him a smile of your own that matches the look of love and pure happiness that lights up his features. “I said I love you. I heard you, that first night you stayed over but I was too afraid to say it back. Just in case you didn’t mean it the way I did anymore. But then you…”
Jake cups your face in his hands, nodding to encourage you to take your time.
“But then I heard what you said to my parents and no one has ever stood up for me that way.”
His thumbs begin to trace gentle patterns onto the apples of your cheeks.
“I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you and I’m sorry if I ever made you feel otherwise.” A tear finally escapes from the corner of your eye that gets gently pressed away by Jake’s lips.
“Oh, sweetheart. I’m sorry if I ever made you doubt my love.”
You shake your head, desperately hoping he understands that none of that matters now. “You’re here now. That’s what matters. I love you, Jake Seresin.”
Finally, after days of waiting, he kisses you softly on the lips. It’s not rough or hungry, despite how long he’s been waiting for this moment. It’s soft, delicate, and full of love. It’s passionate and heartwarming. It’s the kind that you could feel all the way to the tips of your toes. Just like the first time.
“I love you, Ace. You’ll never have to doubt that again.”
Your relationship, just like your body, wasn’t one hundred percent healed. There were still many things the two of you had to talk about.
However, knowing that Jake loved you didn’t make the unspoken parts so scary. Having him, loving him, is enough.

I’ve been obsess with this idea for a while, so I’d I’m one of the lucky Ducks … Anyone from the original AA trilogy who has the Medical Examiner as an S/O, but the medical examiner is selectively mute and prefers to talk to their deceased “patients”.
Heey anon! Nice to meet you <3
I choose two "new" characters to this blog, but I hope my choices will please you.
Enjoy and drink water regularly! ^^
-------------------------------------------
Phoenix Wright, Mia Fey, Dick Gumshoe and Jake Marshall x medical examiner S/O with selective mutism, but talk with their patients:
Phoenix Wright:
Since starting his law career (and Mia's case), Phoenix never handled the presence of dead bodies well;
Or whatever reminded him of one;
So you two rarely talked about their work;
Phoenix was one of the few people to whom they talked the most;
They felt free from all the things that blocked their voice and Phoenix quickly learned what tone of voice to use with them;
He also understands that they may have moments in which they prefer to just stay silent, even when with him;
When out with him, however, things drastically change;
They always stay close to him, let him do all the talking in every context and when people they don't know approach them and try to establish a conversation their throat tightens, they just stare and let their trembling hands talk;
All these problems, however, seem to disappear whenever they're at work, in their gown, hands tight in the gloves and religious silence;
Every day a new story, everyday a new someone to be with for hours;
Someone who doesn't talk, doesn't judge;
That's probably the reason why they find it so easy to talk with them;
It's strange, and they know it, but in some way they release all the stress in them;
Phoenix came to know when Gumshoe told him they heard them speaking inside the morgue, noticing there were just them and the "patients";
Phoenix never said anything, he tried to understand but never confronted them in a judicious, disgusted way;
He was just curious and didn't find it that strange, considering what he had been through and those around him.
Mia Fey:
Mia knew a bit of psychology, so she noticed almost immediately that they weren't able to speak in certain social contexts;
She tries to prevent them from getting into an anxious state by observing both their behavior and the people around them;
She likes to have them around when she works, so when it's sure that no one else is supposed to be in the office, they follow her and help with cases;
Mia likes to follow them to work as well, but she isn't allowed in the morgue or the laboratories, so she just waits somewhere nearby, making them know that if needed, she is in the area;
They told them about their habit, both because they wanted her to know and to ask for some advice to overcome this problem;
Surely it helped that she spoke outside the house, but maybe trying to have conversations with someone a little bit more lively would help more;
When together, Mia always tries to connect them with the outside by asking them to do something for her, if she's speaking with someone she tries to engage them too, in the conversation;
If they aren't able to do it anyway, Mia knows how to respect that and just let them interact with her.
Dick Gumshoe:
Gumshoe was always interested in their work;
He never understood a word about medicine, or anatomy, or anything of the sort;
But whenever the victims of his cases are handled by them, he makes sure to never miss a detail and if he doesn't understand, they will gladly explain to him;
However he finds it a little "strong" to be constantly inside a cold, silent room with a corpse you have to analyse in minimum details, even cut them if necessary;
Whenever they have business at the police station, he tries his best to be around them and spare them any kind of anxiety attack;
He never understood completely their difficulty with speaking in public, so sometimes he might be insensitive, but not in a malicious way;
He just doesn't get it, give him some time;
He once heard them talking to themselves when he was on his way to their "office";
But then he peeked at the door and saw they were talking while working;
Strangely, he completely got how much easier it was for them to "talk" with someone who didn't give them any kind of feedback, and thus no anxiety;
They tried to explain to him everything, so he wouldn't think badly of them;
But, sincerely, Gumshoe saw worse in his career, and as said, he didn't find that strange at all;
But probably they felt embarrassed knowing that Gumshoe knew their "habit";
So he always makes sure that whenever he wants to come visit, he warns them and doesn't burst in without them knowing.
Jake Marshall:
Jake was the one who introduced them to this work;
When they started specializing , he often posed as their professor of anything concerning the law and the investigation field;
He mostly did so whenever they had questions that couldn't bring themselves to ask his actual professors;
When they finally managed to graduate and get the job in his same division, whenever he could, he was with them;
He was always fascinated by this kind of work, so the two of them often started conversations about it;
(Mostly them explaining medical things to him, since he doesn't understand anything);
When together, he makes everything possible to keep them comfortable, but he also spurs them to overcome their anxiety, both at the office and in public;
That's because he clearly sees their difficulties in everyday life;
One day, when they were together at the morgue, he was checking some documents when he heard them talk;
He turned to answer but saw that they weren't talking to him;
Few seconds of silence before he giggled it off;
"What do they say about it?";
They shushed him and just hid their embarrassment, but at the same time were glad he didn't mock them;
If they thought talking with their patients could help, he was more than happy to leave them alone;
Even if he'll miss seeing them at work.

dating jake marshall
pairing: jake marshall x gn!reader
tags: spoilers for jake's backstory, wholesome fluff, established romantic relationship, angst (jake worrying about reader's safety)
jake seems like a laid back guy, who doesn't care about much, but this is just how he presents himself
he actually cares a lot, about the people he loves and especially you!
he's a very determined and caring person, but you're one of the few people who actually gets to see this side of him
after the loss of his brother, he doesn't want to lose anyone else, which leads to him being a overprotective of you, always having an eye on you, just to be sure
while jake seems very calm, he can get really upset, if you put yourself in danger. he lashes out at you, for being so reckless and careless, only to quickly feel bad for yelling at you
he doesn't want to lose you! he's so desperate to keep you safe, that sometimes his emotions just get the better of him
he always apologizes right after and you can always see he's genuine! he's been through a lot and those wounds just haven't properly healed yet…
jake isn't a good cook, so he can only really make rice and pasta, with some premade sauces. so most of the time, the two of you get take out for lunch and dinner!
you occasionally visit jake at work, bringing along some sandwiches or a bento box you made!
while at work, he always shows you around and he'll let you wear his cowboy hat, as he just loves how it looks on you!

dwight fairfield
aka: nervous leader
there it is again
the materialization of your incessant, solid heartbeat that felt like your rib cage was going to crack open whenever the killer was close
serving as an ominous warning for what was about to come next
the generator blows up beneath your imprecise fingers and a curse tumbles out of your mouth before you can consider better of it
and the crude expletive startles dwight
“sorry,” you hastily apologize before continuing to work alongside him, “just sounds like they’re close to us.”
dwight, however, maintains his swiftness while tugging the colorful wires within the generator, “you don’t need to apologize. just try to keep repairing.”
and although he desperately tries to steady his voice, you notice the nervous bounce of his knee because he’s aware that the killer is notified of your current location
honestly, he’s an enigma that you’re unable to solve
dwight carries the characteristics of being a pronounced leader,, locating and increasing the efficiency of teammates whenever he was in Trials
at times, however, his jumpy behavior or how you’ve caught him biting at the tips of his nails contradicts all previous logic
but he’s always like this: incredibly polite yet remarkably strategic
a reluctant brave leader
in your peripheral vision, you observe the methodical way his fingers pull at the wires,, how his dark brows furrowed from atop his thick-rimmed glasses due to his unrivaled concentration
and his efficiency bolsters a wave of confidence to wash over you
“good,” dwight hums in encouragement when the two of you work in flawless tandem, “that’s more like it.”
soon, the shared generator is more than halfway progressed,, the increase of repair speed having a huge impact
but the dire presence of the killer is forewarned in a vicious screech
you both need to make a run for it
dwight’s eyes hurriedly dart to yours before he tactfully orders, “get going, I’ll finish this!”
it’s an executive decision,, one that forces him to contemplate so thoroughly that the edge of his hand comes up to push at his glasses
“what? no,” you shake your head while desperately yanking at the wires in hopes of repairing the generator quicker, “we’re almost done with this and I can’t just leave you here.”
and the second half of your sweet comment has his expression softening because, of course, he knows you’re worried about his well-being
a corner of his lips lifted at the sentiment and it’s such a rare occurrence that you’re left stunned while he reassures you, “you’re always looking out for everyone but listen to me: let me watch over you.”
and sure, dwight’s voice cracks during his confession (which stiffly tumbles out of his mouth) but your cheeks heat up regardless while his next words send you sprinting away with a stronger mentality
“now,” he pauses to send you a single, assured nod, “show me what you can do!”

jake park
aka: solitary survivalist
typically known as a solo survivalist,, not the type to become sidetracked during Trials
prides himself in his ability to adapt in any circumstance
an excellent teammate to have, especially in the Realms that are centered around the woods
yet, he’ll struggle with building connections outside of Trials and is often found replenishing his toolbox alone while the others are gathered around the campfire
not the best at socializing due to his rebellious nature and tendency to flee when pressure grows, he’s uncertain on how to interact with the other survivors
dark eyes scanning the group, he’d be vigilant yet silent in group settings like this
everyone’s conversing,, attempting to take the edge off of the uncertainty of when the Entity would beckon them into another Trial
light chuckles could be heard but the rare noise doesn’t sway his attention
his fingers work methodically to clean off varying vice grips before laying them carefully in a metal toolbox resting by his feet
and it isn’t until you sidle in the space beside him does he glance up
“jake?”
his name on your lips sounds soft, friendly, and it immediately snatches his attention, “(y/n).”
it’s silent for a couple seconds,, but from the corner of his dark eyes he notes the skittish smile you offer him at the casual mention of your name
you’re fumbling with something
“made this for you to use in the next Trial,” you beckon for him to take the item from your hands, “I figured it might be helpful.”
his gloved hands brush against makeshift cutting wire made from jagged metal wire and two wooden handles
it’s an attempt,, that much is certain by the irregular and ragged notches in the design
but the sentiment is unbelievably sweet
“for me?”
the question sounds foolish coming from him but his awkwardness is overlooked by you when you eagerly nod in response
“you sure?”
just from the shape of it he’s aware that the cutting tool could be used to sabotage hooks (an action he’s never rationalized to commit during a Trial,, yet, it’s a consensus that he’s one of the most agile survivors that could pull off such a feat)
but your blind, compassionate trust in him is the most relevant factor that he’s dazed from
a bright grin tugs upon your lips at his realization, “of course. only you can pull it off, jake.”
and it’s this initial encounter that sparks the habit of jake risking his life to sabotage any hooks whenever you’re being carried by the killer
it’s a strange deed,, how the solo survivalist abandoned his previous ways if you were even in an ounce of danger
because he’s sprinting to your rescue
the time nor place never dwindles his ability to locate the closest hook, slide beside it, and grant you the chance to wiggle out of the killer’s grasp– all while clutching onto the cutting wire you gifted him
-
-
ace visconti
aka: lucky gambler
“ace, you can’t just keep giving me items during the Trial.”
your exasperation is lost on the male, however, because he’s already tipping the edge of his cobalt-colored hat towards you
he’s a gambler
a lucky one at that
will continually push his odds of being caught in the basement while looting the permanent chest that’s tucked away in one of the dingy corners
“just for you, sweetheart,” he casually mentions while bestowing the offering to you
his breathing is absurdly stable,, considering that he trekked across the entire Realm just to personally hand you the gift
pressing your lips in a firm line, you halfheartedly scold, “time is wasted if you keep this up, ya know.”
and, naturally, he shrugs his shoulders in feigned apology while shooting you a charming grin
despite your reprimand you’re still curious on what he gifted you this time
fingers digging through the contents, a noise of complete awe leaves your lips, “oh, ace.”
because nestled in the middle of the medkit is a plastic bottle of styptic agent,, used to stop wounds from hemorrhaging
highly beneficial to use while healing yourself or another teammate and the rarity of the item equates to it being incredibly valuable
“it’s great but I can’t take this from you,” you pause to close the medkit, “you should have it.”
his bright eyes peer down at you from behind his shades,, noticing the hesitant sweep of your gaze upon inspecting the item in your hands
but ace has different plans
shaking his head, he proceeds to place a gentle hand on your shoulder, “keep it. it should come in handy.”
and of course it’ll be useful because you realize there’s even added gauze within the medkit to heal a couple more injuries
it’ll give the team an advantage
“it’s just a lot,” you fiddle with the box’s metal handle, “this is really good loot.”
his brows shoot up at this but coolly responds, “what can I say? I’m just a lucky guy.”
he’s bargaining with you, you know that– except he isn’t expecting anything in return
ace’s charismatic grin is contagious and soon a bashful smile dances on your lips
and you’re not sure if it’s the warmth of his touch or the persuasive drawl of his voice,, but you cling onto the medkit with earnest

leon s. kennedy
aka: rookie police officer
“leon!”
the holler of his name causes his wide eyes to land on your crouched figure
naturally, you’re leaning into the side of the generator to pull at a bundle of wires and increase the probability of powering the exit gate
he treads forward before dropping to his knees to assist you in repairing the generator, “fancy seeing you here.”
and his voice is warm, welcoming, and everything that you adore about leon
his uniform is slightly covered with remnants of blood and dirt but otherwise he seems safe
“you scared me,” you sheepishly explained and gestured to the locker he just emerged from, “you need to tell us before you do that!”
your chiding is only for show, however, because the mutual infatuation you both share for each other is blatantly obvious
from lingering stares and giddy smiles, your fellow teammates are well informed of the potential relationship
which is why the third person that was helping you complete the generator stands up to leave
but not before giving you a discreet wink
and needless to say, the rookie cop comments about the strange behavior, “I– what was that about?”
he raises a brow but is immersed with guiding your fingers to the correct cluster of wires
responding with a quick shake of your head, you wager a glimpse at him when he abruptly digs in his belt pouch
“oh, before I forget,” leon opens his gloved hand to reveal a flashbang, “I got something for you.”
before you can sincerely thank him, he drags his hand up to scratch the back of his neck and murmurs, “in case you need it.”
and the sun’s sweltering rays only emphasize the tips of his reddened ears
“is this what you were crafting in the locker?”
you attempt– really, you do– to steady your voice but the gesture is just so overwhelmingly wholesome that your tone wavers
and your hands instinctively raise to cover your face before you add in muffles, “I’ll keep it then.”
he perks up at your declaration,, light-hued eyes glistening at the knowledge that you’ll hold onto his flash grenade
a soft grin dances on his lips, “okay.”
and there’s a comfortable silence that settles amongst you both
that is, until leon piques up, “you know, you’re kinda cute when you’re embarrassed. gimme your number when we make it out of the Trial?”
