“Ace, did you drive here?” Nancy asks incredulously as they make their way out the front door of The Claw. 

He shrugs. “Yeah.”

At least four questions play across her face before she settles on one. “How?”

“Florence has my back. We made it work.” 

Nancy bites back a smile, striving to look disapproving. “Okay, well, I’m driving.” 

“But Florence—”

“Has my back, right?” she parrots triumphantly. 

She has him there. 

Ace reluctantly climbs into the passenger seat. None of this is the way he imagined her driving Florence, but he’ll take what he can get. She starts up the engine and sets off while he fidgets, restlessly toying with the strap of his sling. 

Nancy huffs a soft laugh and spares him a glance before turning her eyes back to the road. “I promise I’m a good driver.”

“It’s not just that, it’s—” He gestures with his good hand, as if that will articulate what he means.

“Everything,” she finishes, anticipating his vague ending. “How are you? All things considered.”
