Mayer Hawthorne Brings New Tunes to Sold-Out Music Hall of Williamsburg

DJ-turned-crooner Mayer Hawthorne drips rizz. For more than a decade, he’s charmed with his throwback falsetto, and expanding his swagger, he teamed up with fellow producer Jake One in 2015 to form Tuxedo, a soulful pop duo that asks, “Do you Fux with the Tux?” He returned to his solo outfit last fall with his fifth studio album, For All Time, a soundtrack that welcomes you through a beaded curtain into a smoky jazz club. With interludes of “Hawthorne Rides Again” throughout, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist took his latest release for a spin at Music Hall Of Williamsburg on Wednesday night.  A trio of ladies, sporting matching black-and-white herringbone-print pants, cascaded onto the stage followed by the man himself. They kicked off the set with the new LP’s “The Pool.” Hawthorne donned a smoking jacket to fully embody the night’s relaxed and playful vibes, as they performed music from across his catalog. The crowd was fully in the palm of Hawthorne’s hand happily obeying when asked to sing, “Na na na nana” on “Back Seat Lover.” Beatboxing to introduce the funky “Out of Pocket,” Hawthorne spotlighted the bassist as she throbbed the beat for this toe-tapping ditty. 

The disco ball rotated for “On the Floor” as the man of the hour indicated that his shiny shoes were meant for dancing. While the ladies continued on with “Deuce and a Quarter,” he departed for a brief wardrobe change, returning in a snazzy, brick-colored suit with flared slacks. The back half of the set featured classics from his debut studio album, A Strange Arrangement, including “Green Eyed Love,” a dancehall version of “Maybe So, Maybe No” and a brief outro of “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” before Hawthorne capped off a spin through New York City with a two-song encore of “Eyes of Love” and “Henny & Gingerale.” —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck
