Keith is in a place he never imagined he’d return to.

He’s walking down the Garrison halls, following Commander Holt and Shiro as they bring each other up to speed. Pidge and her mom are behind him, with the rest of their group and those soldiers that helped them trailing behind. At least Lance’s sister managed to divide him from their swarm of a family, explaining the need for a debrief.

Hunk’s family is still out there, missing. Keith makes a mental note to check in on him soon.

Keith figures Adam is somewhere in the Garrison, biding his time until he can talk to Shiro. His hands tighten reflexively into fists, remembering how hurt Shiro had been over their breakup. They’d been together a long time, ever since they were cadets and flight partners…

Flight partners. Adam was a pilot as well as a teacher. One of the best ones in the Garrison at the time.

Suddenly Keith is sure that Adam is not in the Garrison anymore.

Keith feels eyes on him as the debriefing begins.

He’s already uncomfortable, wearing a Garrison uniform for the first time in many years. He never liked the stiff edges of the high collar or the combination of orange and beige. The uniform makes him feel like a kid again and it’s an effort at first to speak up, to remember he is the leader of Voltron.

He glances around at one point and realizes who’s staring at him. James—or Officer Griffin as he’s known now—is looking at him from his place on the other side of the room. Keith frowns at him, not sure why he’s getting the death-glare, but focuses back on the conversation when Hunk starts arguing about trying to rescue his family.

James snaps, “Hey, do paladins not understand the chain of command? Your CO said it was too dangerous.”

Keith is ready to smack him down and Shiro has stiffened beside him, but Sam cuts James off and redirects the conversation. Then Allura stands up as she offers a possibility; Keith has to remember that trick the next time he needs to make a point to this room full of people who are increasingly aware that their authority can’t help them in this situation.

It’s so different from working with Voltron, where the chain of command is fluid at best and everyone is used to voicing their thoughts or acting when they see a need. The Blades had been a bit more organized, with a specific operative in charge of a given mission, but everyone knew circumstances could change in an instant and was prepared to act on their own if need be.

Keith wonders what James would do mid-battle if the command center was taken down and he suddenly had no commanding officer. Or what his squadron would do if he were shot down.

And then he remembers the boy who apologized to him and reached out. He resolves to do what he can to make sure James never has to face either of those situations.

They win.

Keith’s still not sure how they managed it. The team’s last desperate efforts to move the unknown robeast far enough into space to save Earth succeeded, but sent the lions spiraling back down to the planet at terminal velocity. Keith had been the first to be pulled from his lion, but the last to recover; by the time the doctors brought him out of a medically- induced coma, his mother and Kolivan had arrived in answer to Shiro’s summons.

His recovery takes a while, between the skull fracture, other broken bones, and internal injuries. Shiro visits every day, even if only for a few minutes, and the other paladins come as their own injuries permit. Kolivan stays long enough to establish a few Blades at the new headquarters of the coalition and Krolia makes it clear she’s staying for the duration.

Matt brings Pidge to visit. She rides in a hoverchair because her broken ankle is still healing, and the three of them are having fun trading stories about the others. Keith is still laughing over Lance’s “Tailor” moment in the sims when James comes to the door and hovers.

Pidge notices and elbows Matt. “We gotta get back before the nurses come looking for me. They’re supposed to scan my ankle and see what’s up with it this afternoon.”

Keith waves them goodbye, then beckons a little impatiently as James hesitates. “Come on, then.”

James looks back at the door. “Who was that guy?” His voice betrays more than a bit of interest.

“You didn’t recognize him? That’s Matt Holt, Pidge’s brother.”

James does a classic double-take back at the door, his mouth hanging open. “Wait, him? That shrimpy nerd?”

Keith smirks a little and responds in his driest tone. “Amazing what being kidnapped by aliens, thrown into a gladiator ring, rescued by rebels, and training with them to help overthrow an evil empire will do.”

James’ eyes narrow. After all the time they’ve known each other, he still has to pause in order to detect Keith’s sarcasm level. He looks Keith up and down.

“Funny, could say similar things about you. How did you get so beefed up compared to McLain?”

Keith shrugs. “I wound up going through a quantum abyss where time was slowed down. Gained two extra years on everyone else.” Seeing James’ eyebrows go up, Keith decides to muddy the waters even more. “And then there’s the fact that apparently three years went by in a few minutes when we managed to prevent all alternate realities from collapsing and destroying the entire universe.”

“Wait, what? Alternate realities? That’s actually a thing?”

Keith nods and James draws closer to sit at the foot of the bed.

“Like when someone makes a decision one way and that’s our reality, but when they make the opposite choice there’s a split and things happen differently? Infinite possibilities?”

Keith shrugs. “I don’t know exactly. We discovered one alternate reality where Allura’s people ended up being the bad guys. She had died ten thousand years before instead of being placed in cryosleep, and those Alteans enforced the peace by implanting mind-control devices in everyone who was against them.”

James shudders at that thought. “Okay, yeah, not a good place to visit.”

“It wasn’t. And it was weird; there was a version of Shiro there—he was a member of a resistance group—and it was the strangest thing. His hair was different, and his voice, but it was still him. Our Shiro had been missing for a while at that point, which made it even harder.”

James tilts his head and looks at Keith assessingly. His lips tighten, as if he’s made some kind of unpleasant discovery. “So, have you and Shiro made it official yet?”

Keith frowns and looks away, trying to ignore the spike in his heartbeat at those words. “What are you talking about?”

“You haven’t. Oh my god. You carry a torch for a dead man, follow him into space when it turns out he’s not so dead, even gain two years on him, and, from what I heard, took out a Galra commander up close and personal with your sword to protect him? And you haven’t told him how you feel? What’s it gonna take?”

Keith stares down at his hands, willing himself not to clutch the sheets or cover his reddening face. “It’s not like that.”

“It is totally like that! I mean,” James glances at the open door and lowers his voice. “The last time you and I had sex, you were pretending I was him the whole time.”

Is it possible to spontaneously combust from embarrassment and guilt? Keith almost wishes it were. He shakes his head, sure he’ll stutter if he tries to speak.

“You were. You said his name after. I heard you.”

That startles Keith’s voice out of him. “I didn’t… I didn’t mean to. God, James, I’m sorry.”

James reaches out with one hand, running it up and down Keith’s leg. “Apology accepted.”

Keith almost can’t breathe, the absolution is so unexpected. “But I hurt you!”

“Yeah, you did. But there’s no expiration date on an apology conversation.”

Keith smiles a little, hearing that old phrase, but James keeps going before he can say anything.

“And I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you faster. I wanted to go home and really think about what to say. Had it all planned out, with the best approach to get you to deal with your grief and everything. And then you apparently wrecked a sim and got thrown out before I could get back?” James’ voice lilts up in curiosity.

Now Keith clutches the sheets, remembering.

“I went to get some practice in and found a new program in the menu.” Keith swallows hard, remembering the grief and rage that had poured out of him at the time. “It was a rescue objective...with a target of Kerberos.”

James’ hand tightens on Keith’s leg. “Holy shit,” he breathes. “You saw that with no warning?”

Keith nods. “Smashed the menu display with my bare hand before I realized it.”

James lets go of Keith’s leg and holds his hand out. “I’m sorry I didn’t say something sooner.”

Keith accepts the apology by completing the handshake and goes back to twisting up the sheets. “Thanks. But I think it mostly worked out for the best anyway. If I’d still been in the Garrison when Shiro escaped, I doubt we’d have been able to find the Blue Lion before that first Galra ship arrived.”

James is about to reply when there’s a burst of bright light and the bed is filled with seventy-five kilos of cosmic wolf. He squirms up to lick Keith’s face, and Keith happily goes for the ears while James is whacked with a wagging tail.

“Shiro’s on the way, then?” Keith asks and the wolf gives that chirpy sort of growl that means assent rather than aggression.

James stands, holding his hands out to keep the wolf’s tail off him. “I better go.”

“You don’t have to,” Keith protests.

“Yeah, I do. You have something to tell Shiro. I’ll drop in again day after tomorrow. We’re in training all day tomorrow with the squadron for the new wave of MFEs.”

Keith smiles at James as the wolf settles on his legs. “Good luck with that.”

“Should be fine. No signs of anyone being a fancypants pilot in this bunch.”

“Hey, I can outfly anyone in this building...or what’s left of it.”

James’ expression turns fond. “Maybe once you’re healed up we can take a couple of the MFEs for a spin. See if you can find any room for improvement.”

“Only if you come for a ride in the Black Lion.”

“Deal.” James reaches out to shake on it and Keith tugs so he can slap James on the back with his free hand. James returns the embrace, ruffling Keith’s hair.

“Am I interrupting?” Shiro is standing in the door, looking a little curious.

“No sir, just saying goodbye for now.” James straightens and salutes.

“At ease, Griffin. I’ll see you at training tomorrow.”

James departs, but gives Keith a significant look as he does so. Keith gets the message: if he doesn’t talk to Shiro now, James is going to have ample opportunity to drop hints or otherwise make Keith’s life miserable.

Shiro comes to sit on the bed, patting the wolf with his prosthesis. “How are you feeling today?”

“Pretty good.” Keith reaches out and takes Shiro’s other hand. With one deep breath for courage, he begins. “I need to talk to you about something.”

Two evenings later, James turns up at Keith’s door, bearing a plate of caramel brownies and praising Hunk for helping him sub some of the ingredients that are still scarce during a post-war recovery.

They’re still warm from the oven.

my thoughts: Still low key shipping them, and I’m salty they didn’t have a single convo as adults in the damn show. I wanted resolving, but guess not

what makes me happy about them: They’re both team leaders, so I think they could lean on each other for support when they gotta be strong for their respective team. Plus, they’re both pretty ppl so they’d make a damn hot couple

Ok ...so why is everyone so convinced Kaxca is end game? Like this isn't to shit on the ship or anything. But like for people who don't like the ship they seem convinced the writers are trying to make them endgame. And maybe they are right maybe it is endgame but ...what convinced you of that?

But like no one is convinced or paranoid Jaith /Jeith or Heith is end game.

My theory was Axca might secretly be related because in that end scene where she shows up Keith and Krolia are at Keith father's grave. It's not like the Hunk and Shay scene where its anyone who cares comes to visit. It's this very personal family moment the family that could have been, all together again.

And then theres Axca who looks on from the distance a part of that scene but still disconnected from it.

Which to me implies that shes connected to that family yet still distant from it.

Which hey I could be wrong but like it's not like this clearly unambiguous end game ship everyone seems to be making it out to be.

And this is especially weird to me since the other ship people think is a unambiguous end game ship( whether they like or are afraid of the idea ) is Allurance.

Which you can argue that they shouldn't have had Allura realize her feelings so quickly after Lotor, or there should have been more ovbious indications of her feelings, because otherwise it makes Lance look like a rebound. You can say that you always just saw them as platonic .

Fine but what you can't deny is whether you see it as platonic or romantic this relationship has has been explored

They had moments together

Their relationship progressed

They became very close whether you see that as romantic or platonic.

This is the other relationship many are convinced is endgame now.

Maybe Keith and Axca will have a boat load of moments next season and end up together I dont know. But as of now given how you have seem one potential example of how voltron handles romantic relationships I just dont get why people are so convinced that Keith and Axca destined to be together from this season alone.

Like I said nothing against the ship if you do think it's going to be a thing or want it to be a thing . I'm not saying you are wrong. I'm just saying it's far from gaurenteed that you are right based just on what shipping fuel you got.

Similarly I'm not saying that allurance has no chance of not being canon. I'm just saying its unlikely they won't be canon with how much build up it got.

hi! So, I wanted to write a klance ff in a cool zombie survival au but mid-creating it I realised it wasn't klance dynamic at all but 100% pure jaith material. Except. I haven't even READ jaith yet. Could I possibly get the chance to be guided through my ignorance by the illustrious Official Jaith Guardian themself and get some fanfic recs? All of my headcanons and stuff come from these two fics. Theyre so good. Also be sure to listen to the jaith playlist (in order! Not shuffled) i linked while reading. Double ouchie.

Their relationship is very much a constant push and pull.

Keith pushes james away because he doesn’t even know if he can love and doesnt want to lead james on (aroace spec keith for the win) and because of his perceived faults and flaws, james tries to pull him closer because keith has been one of the only people to like him for him, not for the facade he puts up in public and because he doesn’t care about Keith’s small flaws he makes out to be huge

James pushes keith away out of fear that his constantly suppressed anger and jealousy will rear its head and hurt keith (and also because of internalized homophobia), keith tries to pull him closer because james was the only one who stubbornly stuck by his side even through all the years where he was horrible to james

Basically one of the fundamental differences i feel exists between jaith and klance is the idea that james and keith grew up together and only had eachother for a significant period of time. Keith lost his father and tried closing himself off to the world, but james refused to let that happen. Keith saw right past james’ charade of charming smiles and well ironed shirts to see the real him who was in desperate need of a significant connection. For every insecurity one of them has the other vehemently insists on loving them despite (or because of) it. For every bad thing one of them does the other will insist that its alright and that people grow and change.

They exist together through mutual respect, mutual rivalry, mutual love for eachother, and mutual hatred. They’re complicated little guys but no matter how much they claim to hate eachother they know that if they were separated they’d miss eachother desperately, almost violently.

Only when they’ve matured emotionally do they finally realize just how much they like eachother lol. Things get much better when teenage hormone’s aren’t in the mix

Only when they’re older do they realize how much they needed, and still need, eachother

Theyre made for eachother but the universe seems hell bent on tearing them apart.

They are mirrors of eachother but also opposites. They love eachother so much but dont dare to let that love fully show. Im in pain i hate them sm 😞

why do you reblog poly content/endgame other ship content?

In the beginning, we reblogged shaith and other jaith + other person/people ships because:

There wasn’t a lot of jaith posts so we reblogged anything we could get, even if it was a poly ship, endgame other ship

Since most of the jaith shippers are sheith shippers, most of the jaith content had endgame sheith. And since people mostly shipped sheith, no one had any real problems with that being the case.

Clearly, it’s different now as there are people who want solely jaith/aren’t sheith shippers. There are definitely more shippers than there were before and with that, there are different preferences than there were at the beginning.

We still reblog poly content, endgame other ship content because of the reason that there still isn’t a lot of jaith content and we want to keep the blog on a consistent reblogging schedule as much as possible. So we will reblog what we can get. But now, since we want to keep this blog mainly jaith, we have one rule that we abide by when reblogging poly content/other endgame ship content. Jaith must be the main focus.

That means even if the creation has keith or james pining after someone else and they use each other to get over that person, we will reblog it since the creation will mostly be jaith. My opinion on Season 8 of Voltron

I'm just going to write down my honest opinion on this season, so for those who are not interested or don't want to be spoilered: DON'T READ THIS!

I'm not writing this to receive hate or anything, but I have to get this out of my system.

First if all: I've always loved Voltron. I really enjoyed the first 7 seasons (although many people hated s7, I actually liked it (I did hate how they killed off Adam (if they wanted to kill him they could've done it in a better way) or how Allura suddenly seemed interested in Lance after always telling him off but overall I enjoyed s7) but let's be real: S8 was just poorly done (they forced Allurance, had no good plotline during the whole season, there are still too many unanswered questions ...).

I loved the show, I really did (and still do, if you ignore s8) but not only did they hint at a ship (Klance) throughout the whole show just to force Allurance and kill Allura off at the very end (honestly I kinda guessed they'd kill her after S7 but after S8E1 I knew for sure ... The way they made Allura and Lance canon made it obvious (I never shipped Allurance and I never will (in my opinion they just don't fit each other) but even if I did ship them, I wouldn't have been happy with how they made them canon ... Allura always tell's him off, then falls in love with Lotor and just a few month later she suddenly loves Lance? This doesn't make sense at all)

I mean what was the point in this show? I don't get why they ended it like this.

They said we would be happy: who could be happy with this kind of ending?

They said Lance would get an endgame and Allura wouldn't get one: Allurance is forced canon and she's killed.

Now, where is Lance's endgame? He's single, surrounded with things that will always remind him of her and has these altean-marks for some reason (I'm a fan of altean-Lance theories but why and how did he get these marks?! Because he and Allura kissed "one last time"? It was never explained, probably never will, and just doesn't make sense). He'll probably never be able to let her go and that's just sad and definitely not healthy. Lance should move on and not stay trapped in the past.

They also said Lance would be someones first choice but who's first choice was he exactly? Allura choose Lotor first, THEN she "fell in love" with Lance. In the end he was a rebound for her, nothing more, and that's just sad.

This is not about "my" ship not being canon, this is about a overall poorly done plot and lovestory, and a show which had so much potential, which was just wasted away.

They could have done better. While I was watching the season I was bored to death half the time, the ending was just unsatisfying and too many characters ignored.

Let's talk about Honerva for a minute: she was simply a side character throughout the first few seasons, just to end up as the main villain? Why? And she get's redemption and Lotor doesn't? He would have deserved redemption but Honerva? No, she's done too many bad things to deserve this.

Then there are the original paladins: they weren't mentioned much, but apparently their souls were hold prison by Honerva? ... If Voltron hadn't traveled into her mind, they would've never known ... And why was Zarkon there too? I mean wasn't he killed for good by someone else? And if it wasn't his soul but simply a projection of Honerva's mind: how was Voltron able to save him? Just because, at that moment, Honerva didn't know they were there? I'm confused (but maybe that's just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

Let's move to the MFE pilots: what exactly were they there for? Don't get me wrong, I really like them (James is one of my favourite characters) but that's exactly why I'm confused. They are all great characters but it seems like they only had "major" importance in S7 and were just kinda "there" in S8 and I'm sad? It feels like great characters were just wasted away .... Why?

And what about Shiro? He deserves happiness and I am happy that he found someone to be happy with but there was no real interaction between them. We never saw Shiro and Curtis talking outside the Atlas and it just feels like after killing off Adam and seeing the major backlash they received they wanted to make sure Shiro ended up with at least someone so they could say: "We have LGBTQ+ rep!"

Another thing I'm salty about: from the very beginning they hinted at Bi-Lance and Gay-Keith: why? Why did they hint at something like this, give us hope (not only to shippers but to people who wanted LGBTQ+ rep) to reduce everything to Shiro ending up happy with a guy who had almost no screentime? Seriously, if they knew from the start they would end it like this they shouldn't have had Lance hold the sign in this one picture. In the end there was no reason for him to hold it, that was no more and no less than queerbating. They wanted us to get excited, to get more and more people to watch the show, to earn more money or whatever.

The only one who seems to have gotten a "real" character-development throughout the whole show was Keith:

Season 2: we learn that he's part Galra

Season 3: he becomes the leader of Voltron

Season 4: he leaves for the BoM because he thinks he's not good enough as a leader

Season 5: he finds his mom

Season 6: they bond for two years, he safes Shiro and he returns to Voltron

He's my favourite character (I can relate to him so much it's almost sad) so I'm not really complaining about that, but why only him? Is it too much to want this kind of development for the other characters as well? For example: what about Romelle? What was she there for in s8? I like her but in the end she didn't really do anything.

Everything just feels rushed and unfinished. Like, no love was used when they thought up the storyline and they just wanted to end it. If that's the case, I would've been happy if they had simply dropped the show after s6 or s7.

Especially if they leave so many questions unanswered:

What about Keith's (almost) sacrifice in s4?

What about Lance dying in s6?

Where is Keith's reaction to Lance using a sword? (What even was the point in him having a sword if he's not going to use it after obtaining it?)

Where is Lance's earth arc?

Lance wanted to be a pilote but in the end he became a farmer .... Why?

Why did James never apologizing to Keith? Did everyone forget about it or was it just unnecessary?

Voltron is supposed to be the defender of the universe, right? Then why do they need to fuse with the Atlas to safe everyone? So Shiro could be a "real" part of the boss-fight? For old times sake, when he was still the black paladin?

Keith somehow changed his bayard to some kind of canon: why did no one talk about that? (Would have been a great reason for Keith and Lance to talk about Lance's sword ....)

What happened to Kova?

Why was Altea back?

Why did the Atean's just accept Voltron after being told by Honerva that Voltron killed Lotor?

What did Lance take from the castle?

Where did the Olkari go after their planet was destroyed? We saw some of them escape but where did they go? Were they killed?

There is even more (I'm sure all of you could add a few things) but I'll stop here.

In a nutshell: Allurance was forced, Klance wrongly hinted at, the plot in s8 just poorly done and rushed, many great characters ignored and there are too many unanswered questions left.

If you don't like my opinion, that's fine. I didn't write this down to receive hate. I simply wanted to get these feelings of sadness, anger, hurt and betrayal out of my system.

I won't stop loving or shipping Klance, Shadam, Jaith, Griffkink, Shatt, Katt, Thulaz, Romura, Veracxa and Zezor but after this season I need a break.
