gotta love 2 eastern europeans coming to the states not knowing the language and being devoted to their emotional support canadian

What compels you most about the Mario/Jagr dynamic? 👀
lord where to start.
ok. i'm such a sucker for hero-worship, first, and like...this is Thee hero-worship story, you know? jagr had a picture of mario in his wallet. the only reason he dropped to fifth overall is because he lied to all the teams ahead of pittsburgh in the draft so they wouldn't take the risk of drafting him. like that is a man in LOVE idc what anyone says, he might not have realized it/been socialized to view it as impossible but holy fuck, you know?
and there's DRAMA. there's dying alive. there's retirements and returns and rumors of discontent and arguments and trade demands and decades without communicating. there's a fallen idol and championship rings and competition that brings out the best AND the worst in both of them.
and then! there's a reunion that goes so fucking well that mario follows jagr back to the czech republic for literally no reason? a week of listening to jagr talk and reminiscing together and jagr bringing mario up unsolicited all over the damn place again and they fell right back into it? jagr coming to games WEARING A LEMIEUX JERSEY? PLEAAAAASEEEEEEEEEE
they are toxic and messy and it's so fucking fascinating. i hope jagr stops playing hockey after this season and immediately moves to pittsburgh and is around more. i think we deserve that.

so do you think they have to talk to jaromir jagr after this. do you think sid and kris and geno have to go with their hats in their hands and their heads hung low up to jaromir jagr’s usually joyful face (not joyful now) and kick at the dirt and say gee mister sorry we couldn’t win on your literal once in a lifetime historic jersey retirement night. and what will jaromir jagr say. and will Kris only cry himself to sleep tonight or will he commit murder first
#I’m sure it’s fine. I’m sure they’re all professional and jagr will say good game mostly yes. powerplay sucks tho#and Sid will fake laugh while trying not to break every finger in his hand by clenching his fists#whatever#good night !#it was fun for a while. and that’s all that matters#pens lb

Penguins to retire Jaromir Jagr’s No. 68 during pre-game ceremony on Feb. 18
By Pittsburgh Penguins
November 10, 2023
The Pittsburgh Penguins will raise two-time Stanley Cup Champion Jaromir Jagr’s no. 68 jersey to the rafters at PPG Paints Arena on February 18 versus the Los Angeles Kings as part of a pre-game celebration, it was announced today by the club.
As part of the ‘Celebrate 68’ festivities, all fans in attendance that night will receive a replica Jagr No. 68 banner. In addition, a commemorative Jagr bobblehead has been added as a giveaway to all fans in attendance on Thursday, March 14 versus the San Jose Sharks.
Jagr, whose NHL career spanned over two decades, is one of the most accomplished players in NHL history and a member of the league’s ‘100 Greatest Players.’ In 1,733 career regular-season games, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound winger scored 766 goals, 1,155 assists and 1,921 points. He ranks fourth all-time in games played and goals, fifth in assists, and only Wayne Gretzky (2,857) has recorded more points than him. No player in NHL history has more game-winning goals than Jagr’s 135.
Drafted by Pittsburgh in the first round (5th overall) of the 1990 NHL Draft, Jagr spent the first 11 seasons of his 24-year NHL career with the Penguins, appearing in 806 regular-season games notching 439 goals, 640 assists, 1,079 points, 78 game-winning goals and was plus-208. He is in the top-5 in franchise history in games played (5th), goals (4th), assists (4th), points (4th), plus/minus (2nd) and game-winning goals (4th). He was one of 13 captains in team history, serving in the role from 1998-01.
Jagr was an instrumental piece of Pittsburgh’s back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1991 and ’92 – his first two seasons in the NHL. In that two-year span, Jagr suited up for 45 postseason contests, notching 37 points (14G-23A), which was sixth in the NHL over that stretch. Jagr shined during the 1992 Stanley Cup playoffs, recording a playoff career-high 24 points (11G-13A) in 21 games. In total, Jagr has dressed in 208 Stanley Cup Playoff contests, accumulating 201 points (78G-123A). He is one of just six players in NHL history with 200 or more playoff points.
The 10-time NHL All-Star has won a plethora of awards over the course of his NHL career. He is a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner (NHL Scoring Leader – 1995, ’98, ’99, ‘00, ’01), three-time Ted Lindsay Award winner (Most Outstanding Player – 1999, ’00, ’06), and was the recipient of the Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) in 1998-99 and Bill Masterton Trophy (Perseverance, Sportsmanship, and Dedication to Ice Hockey) in 2015-16. Jagr was named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team seven times (1995, ’96, ’98, ’99, ’00, ’01, ’06), the Second All-Star Team in 1996-97 and was a member of the All-Rookie Team in 1990-91.
Throughout NHL history, only Chris Chelios (26), Gordie Howe (26) and Mark Messier (25) have played more seasons in the NHL than Jagr’s 24. Of his 24 seasons, he notched 20-plus goals 19 times and 30-plus goals 15 times, which both rank third in league history. He’s also hit the 100-point plateau five times, and was the sixth-oldest player in NHL history to accomplish that feat during the 2005-06 season at 34 years and 31 days old.
The native of Kladno, Czechia has multiple accolades on the international stage. He’s won a gold medal (1998) and bronze medal (2006) at the Olympic Games, two gold medals (2005, ’10) and two bronze medals (1990, 2011) at the IIHF World Championship and a bronze medal at the 1990 IIHF World Junior Championship. Jagr is one of just 30 players in history to join the Triple Gold Club, which includes winning a Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal and an IIHF World Championship gold medal. He and Jiri Slegr are the only two players of Czech descent to accomplish this feat.
Jagr currently owns Rytiri Kladno of the Czech Extraliga and has been majority owner of the team since 2011-12.

Good News in Sports: Volume One, Issue One.
(PT: Good News In Sports: Volume One, Issue One. End PT).
Are you tired of reading into the bad side of sports culture or seeing the news be nothing but controversy after controversy. Well, this is your checkpoint! Welcome to Good News in Sports! Where we talk about the lighthearted side of sports and athletes, accomplishments and maybe a bit of comedic things that occur in the sport. Just... anything that can make you forget about the messed up culture and the injuries and the dirty hits and your team losing (unless one of these headlines involves your team losing... in that case, sorry about that). Let's get started! Ice Hockey
*Record* attendance in the PWHL, with over 19,825 fans in attendance at Montreal vs Toronto (which has been given the nickname "Battle on Bay Street").
High scoring game alert: The Minnesota Wild beat the Vancouver Canucks 10-7. Yes, you read that correctly. Ten. To. Seven. A total of 17 goals. As well as three different hattricks (One from J.T Miller, another from Kaprizov and another from Joel Eriksson Ek), an event that hasn't occurred since 1992. Jaromir Jagr's No.68 is officially going to the rafters, as the Pittsburgh Penguins retired his number Sunday. ...might I add that was immediately followed by an f-bomb from the mullet man himself ON LIVE TV. Brad Marchand's 1000th game celebration was... certainly interesting to say the least. More emotional than positive (and probably mostly for hawks fans than the rest of the league) but fuck it I'm including it anyway: Hawks fans, I hope you're ready to cry this Sunday. A lot. Well... atleast the refs are honest. Same ref behind the "everyone has a ten minute misconduct" comment too.
Baseball MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IS BACK BAYBEE, as spring training started Thursday between the Dodgers and Padres (Final score: 14-1 Dodgers. ...yes really).
Basketball Okay. The NBA All-Star was... kind of a let down. But you know what *wasn't* a let down? The NBA vs WNBA Three point challenge between Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu! While Stephen ultimately emerged victorious, Sabrina's skills have drawn a lot of praise from many basketball fans.
Brittney Griner's no.42 jersey has been retired by Baylor! Griner's jersey is the seventh to be retired by Baylor.
Motorsports Athletes? Admitting they messed up? Seems unlikely but that's exactly what NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Shane van Gisbergen did after Sunday's Xfinity race.
Natalie Decker became the first woman since 2013 to lead an Xfinity Series race! Soccer/Association Football
MLS season officially starting back up as their season started Wednesday with Inter Miami and Real Salt Lake (Final score: 2-0 Miami)

are you looking forward to a home world championships? the last time the worlds was in the czech republic was 2015, no? any interesting stuff to share regarding it?
Oh, yeah, I am definitely looking forward to it.
Going to sound like some shameful patriot here, but the Czech fans are undeniably the best at cheering at hockey games - boasting, but the main reason why for example the para hockey worlds are held so often here is because it was the first location where the organizers experienced a sold-out arena and people genuinely cheering for the guys -, even when the Czech team is not playing, so I can't wait to experience the atmosphere in the arenas (as I am lucky enough to be able to visit both Prague and Ostrava for a couple of games).
You're right, the last time the tournament was held here was in 2015 when Canada with Crosby, Spezza, Burns, and others won the gold medal - so many hockey fanfictions came out of that championship, it's quite hilarious looking back at how much inspiration the writers got out of that thing.
Interesting stuff? Well, from the Czech perspective, we have come back to our old jerseys with the national emblem cause people hated the Scania-looking-like lion on the new design, the mascots are (once again, just like back in 2015) going to be the bunnies Bob and Bobek, who are famous cartoon characters over here, the symbol on the official logo of the tournament is this drawn puck, which the foreign media thinks is absolutely adorable while the Czechs thinks it's cringe, and they also started releasing the official commercials, in which Jaromir Jagr acts.
youtube
Oh, and a bit of gossipy stuff - we have also kicked out the Finnish coach, who won a bronze medal for us two years back only because some old men at the head of our federation desperately wanted a Czech coach for the home championship so they made up reasons why he allegedly wasn't leading the national team well and replaced him with a coach, who had been until then coaching the junior national team.
On a positive note though, if some Bruins fans are out there, David Krejci is going to be playing there, he wants the tournament to be his official retirement from ice hockey so definitely tune in for the Czech games if you want to see him play for the last time.

Is anyone else thinking they wouldn't be entirely surprised if Jagr were actually in the lineup tonight?
I'm not sure he will be, considering the Pens' cap situation. (Even if the players would likely give up their own salary for the game to be able to play alongside him.) He wouldn't have to be used heavily. Opening faceoff, power plays, etc.
The only jersey retirement I've witnessed was the one earlier this season with the Kings (I think), which was sandwiched between warm-ups and puck drop, if I recall. This one appears to be slated for before warm-ups, with plenty of time allowed. Meaning everyone, theoretically, could attend the ceremony in suits and then go get changed for warmups. Everyone, including Jagr.
#icedbatik babbles about life#and hockey#I'm not saying it *will* happen#but it theoretically *could*#(can a guy play in a retired number if it's his own number that's retired?)
