I had a thought. About the Jägers and Von Pinn. There's this page
And this bit in Agatha H and the Airship City (pg 133-134):
"After being rushed along several halls, Agatha realized exactly where the Jägermonster was holding her and demanded loudly to be put down. He did so with a laugh..." (by the butt, for those of you who forget this scene)
All gives me the impression that the Jägers won't necessarily ask first, but they will listen to a firm 'no'. From what we see, Von Pinn attempts to dissuade the Jägers' amorous advances with physical violence...which is not, technically, a 'no'.
It's another one of those 'the Jägers aren't delusional, it's a culture clash' things--they're assuming that Von Pinn knows, just as any Mechanicsburg girl would, that no means no and rupturing your spleen with my claws means I'm playing hard to get.
All of this to say, can you imagine the look on Von Pinn's face if she discovered that this entire time, all she had to do to get the Jägers to quit hitting on her was say so?

Headcanon on reasonable evidence, actually: Every Heterodyne gets their own specific pack of Jägermonster guards.
Yes, the Jägermonsters are all sworn to the family in general, but Heterodynes do unreasonable and dangerous things on absolutely no notice, and it's helpful to have a specific set of personal guards who know them as individuals well enough to respond immediately. (Of course, Jägers think this sounds like fun.)
Agatha having Dimo, Maxim, and Oggie on more or less permanent assignment to her isn't unusual; it's normal. They know this, and have encouraged her to fall into a pattern they were expecting, actually, and she didn't take any steering at all. On some instinctive level she was expecting it too. Even if Dimo keeps his promotion to General, he'll be a General on the move, from wherever Agatha happens to be. They'll be with her for the rest of her life.
Consorts get their own squads, too. At some point in the future, Gil and Tarvek both acquire a handful of their own personal Jägers, sottle-like. (They notice it happen anyway.)
Jorgi is absolutely one of Tarvek's squad, because there's no way he wasn't designed to be Tarvek's personal guard Jäger, and it will be hilarious.
I'd also love to see Agatha assign Jenka to him, because Tarvek's recently on record as missing his personal spy network, and he and Jenka would have that up and running in no time flat. They'd have fun. (Jenka doesn't hold "being Andronicus Valois' descendent" against him, because Tarvek's loyalties are firmly with Agatha, and they share a "to hell with that family in particular" attitude.) Also, it would be a neat little parallel with Tarvek giving Violetta to Agatha. Agatha could give him a sneaky lady who can kick his ass (and will if when needed) right back. For maximum humor, Füst should take to Tarvek exactly the same way the wasp eaters did.
(this, but with JAGER BEAR)
I don't know if Gil ends up with Vole as one of his pack, because I don't know where the Foglios are going with him. But I nominate this guy from book one:
And this guy from book 14:
to follow Gil around and be reassuring to him periodically.
Higgs has sort of ended up as immediate supervision of the entire triumvirate. Whichever of them is in reach, or all three of them at once. Insert Higgs looking really deadpan tired here. This face. Forever.
Jägers get EXTREMELY excited when they learn a new baby Heterodyne is on the way, and start campaigning to be on the baby's personal guard squad immediately. Of course, being Jägers, there's a lot of biting involved. I imagine months of Jägers challenging each other, not just to fights, because they did all that already, but to increasingly ridiculous and pointless challenges that they're both making up on the spot and obsessively keeping track of. The only real rule is that if you challenge someone to something, you have to do it too (otherwise how will you know who won?) They challenge each other one on one, or everyone in sight. This leads to things like most of the Jägerhorde running a screaming, pushing, biting, brawling egg-and-spoon race down the longest street in Mechanicsburg. The townsfolk line up to watch and cheer. (They're considered a course hazard, so they get to throw things.) Whoever's currently winning (don't ask me how that points math works) when the baby is born gets assigned to the baby.
Bill and Barry both had their own Jäger squads and never knew it, because their guards weren't allowed anywhere near them. Theodora was pretty much out there with a shotgun if she heard even the hint of a Jägermonster accent. Those Jägers still resent it. They feel robbed of their (most recent) chance to be trusted favorites. They might get special-pleading rights in the next tournament-to-guard-the-new-baby, assuming their brothers aren't completely fed up with their whining about it by now.
Klaus Barry had his own guards, but Bill didn't know because the Jägers were barely even allowed in the Castle by that point, so they just didn't tell him. Master of Mechanicsburg or not, the Jägers didn't trust him not to send them away even further (and rightly so).
Nobody volunteered to guard Lucrezia. Bill didn't understand the insult in that, and the townspeople didn't tell him. But every single one of them NOTICED. Ho yez.
There are only so many Jägermonsters, so by this point everyone who's still alive has been in a personal guard squad at least once. Collectively, the Jägermonsters know all the gossip, going back centuries. They'll never tell. If pressed, they suddenly lose the ability to remember last week, much less 1528. They can't be bribed, not even with alcohol, although they encourage people to try.
Canon: Jenka was in Euphrosnia's personal guard.
Seen elsewhere on Tumblr but I forgot to reblog it: Vole was one of Saturnus' pack, which is why he tried to kill Bill and Barry. Saturnus had tried, after all, and Vole was most loyal to Saturnus in particular. (If this was your theory, let me know! Credit to you.)
TL;DR: Jägers running an egg-and-spoon race through Mechanicsburg. There. Now you have the highlight of this post.
Also: ä is alt-132 (using the keypad). NOW YOU KNOW. (hopefully I also now know, because this is like the fifth time I've tried to memorize that)

The Jaeger faces collection
As a joke to use as reaction memes in chats with my friends I started collecting screenshots of the Jaegerkin being... well kind of skrunkly/uncanny/little bit weird/Jaegers.
More beneath the cut. Lots more. I have a problem. I collect more on each reread and it's fun. (sorry for bad quality on them, some are just background weirdness)
Lot's of Dimo and Oggie in here. Something about how their faces scrunch + screentime bias
#girl genius#jagermonster#please feel free to add more I want all the Jaegerfaces#I'll collect them like pokemon cards#save them on a thumb drive#and confuse the hell out of myself someday when I forget it

Chapter 21: More Lost Than Ever.
Higgs was left to die--no, he was lost in Skfiander, which was once again lost to her, to her relief and pain anew--The Brek'kah stone was gone. The artifacts gone. Agatha had passed out for three days after Zeetha couldn't help her at all.
But now Agatha wake and they can move froward.
Through a Lost Princess's Eyes is the Girl Genius Story post timeskip from Zeetha's point of view. It is mostly canon compliant so far, though I've adjusted some things (No more than you see between the comic and novels though, I think.) and will have an uncanon Skifander (Since I've implied to much already.)

Stosh snapped to attention. "Dis iz Mizz Agatha Clay, who smells verra nize, but tinks der Baron iz kippink uz like dose poncy useless Lackya." He thought for a moment. "Sir," he added. The general stared at Agatha through narrowed eyes. "She sees dot, does she?" He stared for another moment and then closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead. "Thank you, Stosh, I vill talk to her. Beck to hyu post."
-Agatha H and the Airship City, chapter 6
She sees that. Not, she thinks that.
Hundreds and hundreds of years of being Europa's boogeymen, being the hand picked army of the Heterodynes, and now they're just another one of the Baron's rescues. Still dangerous, still feared, but here because they have to be, not because they want to be.
I put both the book quote and the comic panel, because of the difference in Stosh's line:
"thinks the Baron is keeping us like [the] Lakya"
vs
"thinks we are like [the] Lakya"
Very similar, but the latter implies offense at the comparison with the Lakya themselves; while the former is focused on the comparison with the Lakya's situation.
On some level, I think the Jӓgers are aware that their situations are very similar, which is why Agatha's statement bothers Stosh so much. I don't think the Jӓgers and the Lakya would get along in any situation, for the same reason they don't get along with Boris, but I think they wouldn't loathe each other to the same degree.
[I wonder if the Lakya hate the Jӓgers because the Jӓgers started it, or if they see themselves in the Jӓgers, too. They were more powerful than you ever were, and yet this is what they are now and what they will be, forever. What does that mean for you? The Baron does say they are starting to get restless.]
But I think it's more subconcious for the average Jӓger (Jӓgers are more clever than they act, but not...super duper introspective, on the whole).
The generals on the other hand...
She sees that, does she?
The generals are very aware of their situation.
They never expected the Heterodynes to return! They never thought they would have to deal with this! They never thought they would have to look the Heterodyne in the face and have them know that the Jӓgers weren't strong enough.
From Khrizhan's perspective, the boss is (possibly) back and she has very quickly picked up on the situation, on how low you had to sink in the name of survival. Not to mention, she's a total unknown. Came out of nowhere. Is she like her father? Is she like the old Heterodynes?
Do you think the generals ever wondered, ever worried, that if Bill and Barry came back and saw Klaus had taken the Jӓger problem off their hands--Maybe the boys would have been just fine with that?
If this new Heterodyne doesn't know them, if this is her impression of them...is she going to want them? If she's like the old Heterodynes, would she want an army that isn't strong enough to defend itself, let alone her? If she's like her father, would she want an army of men who have done the things they've done?
He knows what she sees. What's she going to think?

The Mechanicsburg's Solstice celebration involving a role reversal of the Heterodyne being chased by the townspeople while the castle is asleep is very Saturnalia.
But I think my favorite thing is that the Jӓgers don't know. The entire city AND the Heterodynes made a game out of attempted regicide 1 night a year and decided the best way to keep it a secret from the Jӓgers so they don't interfere is getting them all shitfaced drunk for three days straight.
And it worked.

Hy really likes de simple details. Verra pretty. Hy dun know iffen iz practikal as a hat dtough? Vit how it curves at der sides, its gonna be blockink some periferal. Und iz so vide, its gonna catch all de vind vhen runnink or jumpink dat it flies off or tries to choke hyu. Vell hy guess de second izn't actually too much a concern. Und most hats vill do dat, dis vun chust look light veight und more flyink prone. Und de fabric in de back, hy guess it can get snagged or grabbed, but no more den hair, so hys not too vorried bouts it.
Overall, has potential as a jäger hat. But hy don't tink hyu vould find goot enemies dats vearink it.

I saw this panel with a Jagermonster shouting out, “HOY!” to a clank. I wish he’d say, “ANO BA?!” to it next. That would be cool.

Finished up an old goof exercise, furry Ognian from Girl Genius- he'd be an American badger, they look so soft but are oh so vicious. For the record, Maxim would be a fox and Dimo would be a grizzly bear.

I was revisiting the Maxim Buys a Hat short story and came upon this scene.
Maxim... That is, uh... Quite the tongue you have there...
Is that a jager feature or a Maxim exclusive?
