A paisagem è maravilhosa.

La Paz to Rurrenabaque (& day 1 of Pampas tour) Saturday 10th - Sunday 11th June
After a very long wait at the airport, we finally boarded the Amazonas plane to Rurrenabaque. We say plane but on first impressions it seemed to be more like a model aircraft - similar in size to the ones Patrick’s grandad used to build and fly! To get in to the plane we had to hunch right over and walk along to our seats which were across the aisle from each other. Again we say across from each other but in reality we could both touch the other side of the plane from the seat on the other side. The plane filled up pretty quickly with the 15 passengers and we set off for our (fairly bumpy) ride. The views were spectacular from the plane, especially as we came down towards Rurrenabaque, flying low over the jungle covered hills. It brought a whole new meaning to a fear or flying and it was quite a relief to get off the plane in the end, and we waited for our bags at the smallest airport either of us had ever seen, it was strange to think that just 35 minutes before we’d been 4000 metres higher in the chaos of La Paz. From the horror stories we’d heard about the 18 hour bus journey from La Paz, we felt good about our choice even with the turbulence.
Paying a couple of quid for a taxi, we drove into Rurrenabaque and across to our hostel on the far side of town. We’d decided to book into a dorm room for the night before our Pampas tour because the prices for what was available in terms of private rooms on Booking.com/ Hostelworld were pretty extortionate. After what seems to be a bit of a Bolivian habit of being welcomed to our hostel with uninterest/ disappointment, we checked in to the 7 bed dorm which at first glance seemed okay and was all to ourselves. We had a quick explore of the town, spoke to our Pampas tour operator and eventually found a bar with some other tourists in it to have a quick alcohol / sugar boost with some caprinhas. As it got dark we realised that the hostel room that looked passable wasn’t particularly pleasant, and with no walls/windows in parts was completely open to the jungle. After quick cold showers (lack of hot water seems to be another Bolivian trait) we ate (pretty shit) pizza for tea and got into bed to hide in mosquito nets. The major downside of being in a dorm was being in single beds and having to brave the night alone. What followed was a very interrupted night of sleep, interrupted by dogs barking and cockrels squaking all night, combined with the dorm light going on for new arrivals in the middle of the night, and mattresses that can only be described as concrete hammocks - it was nearly impossible to get out of the dip in the middle. Needless to say we were both pretty happy when morning arrived. It’s become a bit of a running joke that at some point on this trip the ‘holiday’ will start and we’ll get a bit of relaxation!
We set off early the next morning after a breakfast of raw boiled eggs to meet our tour for the next few days for the Pampas experience, which would be 2 nights/3 days on the Jacuma rivers and surrounding plains (Pampas) near the Bolivian jungle. We met our guide Roberto, and an Italian girl, Caterina, who was joining us (who is nearing the end of an 8 month trip!) and set off from Rurrenabaque with only our day rucksacks in a jeep for a three hour drive to the starting point on the river, spotting a sloth and its baby sleeping in a tree on the way. For this tour Megan was being a pretend vegetarian again which has yet to work in her favour, and on the drive we had a quick stop for lunch which consisted of a fried egg with rice and a slightly dodgy beef stew. When we arrived at the river we decamped into the motorised canoe for the three hour ride to our jungle lodgings.
The ride was definitely a highlight: the sun came out, and it was so relaxing pootling along the river, and the wildlife was just incredible. Roberto slowed and stopped loads to tell us about the birds and animals we were seeing and give us amazing views of them in their natural habitats. We quickly stumbled across a group of pink river dolphins and stopped to sit mesmerised for about 20 minutes watching them pop up to the surface to breathe. We also caught our first glimpses of caiman, small yellow squirrel monkeys and a red howler monkey, plus a huge variety of birds which Patrick loved - quite the twitcher. The pictures of the animals from the first afternoon aren’t the best as we (Patrick) were a little over excited by every appearance and went snap happy! Looking back at some of them we’ve got no idea of what we (he) were even trying to capture.
We arrived at the jungle lodgings around 5pm for juice and snacks and the pleasant surprise that we’d have our own room/double bed for the next two nights. We were also pretty pleasantly surprised by the heavy duty mosquito net hanging over the bed which became the safe zone for the next few days. The lodges were wooden and very basic, with cold running water and electricity generated between 7-9pm. Brave faces on for the bed (Megan was again questioning why Patrick was insisting on doing these adventures/experiences and dreaming of clean, non bug infested hotel rooms). It was buggy at 5pm but as the sun went down it increased to a whole new level. We jumped back on the boat for 5 minutes to visit a jungle sunset bar (read shack selling beer, happy Patrick) to watch the sun go down which went from pleasant to bug infested in a matter of minutes. We were grateful that we were taking anti-malarials and the bug spray was out in full force. Then we had dinner back at the lodge, played some cards and got ready for bed before the generator switched off. Then the fun really began… as it had gone dark the sound of the generator was masking the sounds of the jungle, and as it turned off, we were suddenly surrounded by bugs, mice, frogs, bats and birds. From the safety of our mosquito net, it felt like everything was flying/crawling around our room and on the net - we were convinced at one point that a bird/bat was clinging to the outside but we didn’t dare turn our torch on to check. We decided that the only way to survive the night was to put our ear plugs in to drown out the noise and to avoid needing the loo so as not to have to leave the safety of the bed and mosquito net.
Stay tuned for days 2 and 3!
