A rare opinion post from me that's about a book!
Yahtzee Croshaw (of Zero Punctuation, and now Fully Ramblomatic) recently released the third instillment in the Jacques McKeown saga, Will Leave the Galaxy for Good. I re-read the first book last year and listened the audiobook of the latter two back to back upon the release of the third. I really enjoy Yahtzee's comedy reviews, but an issue with these books and most of his others is that, despite being british myself, I'm really not a fan of the british comedy style where the main character is rude and bad things happen to him, and the side characters are annoying idiots who bad things also happen to, I find it relentlessly negative and this particular trilogy is that comedy style in spades, I like Yahtzee's comedy in his reviews but a main character who has a non-stop monologue of put-downs is exhausting.
I'm just starting to listen to Differently Morphous now, between this and Jam, I think the Yahtzee-voice characters are more tolerable when they're not the point of view characters because I immediately rooted for Alison far more in the two chapters she's been in than Not-McKeown by virtue of the fact that she feels like a character and not just an author stand-in who speaks exclusively in clever put-downs. The premise of this series, being about the evils of political correctness, put me off a bit, but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I wrote something vanilla for me and, like, the two other people on tumblr who care that this book series exists.
Per usual, my gratitude to @bum-scum for beta-ing and also assuring me that I do know how to write words, and am not just a monkey with a typewriter.

I haven't actually read his books yet--I keep meaning to pick up Differently Morpheus, lol. I HAVE read every single short story on his Fully Ramblomatic website though. That is good to know!!
I definitely will also be playing some flavor of bitter character next for sure (leaning for Bitter Egoist atm tbh). I DO really enjoy the hero vibes, especially because the crew I've ended up with (as I just hit the 5 max) is like. only ONE of them has any heroic motivations, lol.
Upbeat altruist gang! (We are going to love and care for all our friends and have amazing space adventures and no one is ever gonna die or get hurt!!!!)
@lokis-wager Yes, exactly! Quite a rare archetype for Yahtzee to write tbh, hehe.
We're going to HELP OUT and HAVE A GOOD TIME and FIX THINGS.

The third book of Yahtzee's Jacques McKeown Saga, Will Leave the Galaxy For Good, is out now… on audible. I'm almost tempted to try it, as I get 2 free books if I start through my Prime account, but as fun as it would be to listen you Yahtzee's voice for about 10 hours it just doesn't hold the same appeal to me. So it's a matter of waiting until a physical release happens, like I am with Hamefura. Last book in the trilogy, promising answers to burning questions from the first book, and I just wish it would be picked up to be adapted as some low budget sci-fi show like it deserves to be.

Book Review: Will Save the Galaxy for Food by Yahtzee Croshaw
“We may die horribly the moment I turn this handle.” “I beg your pardon?” I turned the handle. You may know Yahtzee Croshaw from his Zero Punctuation Reviews. If you have not watched one, check them out. Regardless of how you may know Croshaw you need to give his Jacques McKeown series a read. Will Save the Galaxy for Food is book one in the budding series. If you enjoy comedy, silly adventures,…

Didn't have 'pursuit' but I did have 'chased'!
The only star pilot that would be able to get in without scrutiny would be someone famous, rich, and so high-status that no one would dare question him. There was only one man with that kind of ability, and my shoulders slumped. A sinking feeling gurgled in my stomach as I realized that my list of men to bring as a plus-one had been reduced to star pilots and ship mechanics. I had once been a very modern woman, one who would only date men with college degrees who called themselves feminists that had status instead of love. Now I was wondering which ship-monkey I could train well enough to drag to one gala without embarrassing myself completely.
I reassured myself with the thought of the impact Salvation Station was going to have on multiple industries, and how my legacy would always be part of galactic history. But before I could send a text to Jacques McKeown, something flared up in the back of my mind, a feeling that insisted on attention before I could contact him. Our last conversation echoed through my head. “I don’t belong here.”
Here being Salvation Station, among star pilots. It was strange to realize that I belonged here, that this was going to be my life’s work, and he didn’t. Managing a space station in the depths of the black was not only wholy suited to my strengths, but incredibly satisfying. I had chosen this life for myself - and McKeown had chosen to turn away. My leg wouldn’t stop jittering under my desk, foot tapping and knee bouncing as I worked through the complicated rainbow of emotions that chased themselves through my chest. I didn’t want to go to the Gala alone, and he was my only chance.

A bit of coloring practice from Will save the Galaxy for Food. Will say Warden does feel a bit more fleshed out this time. Also maybe should have put more thought into the background. The two are suppose to be squished against each other trying to stay out of range of some cyborg but I drew the background at a different angle.
But the main focus of this was color. I kept the shadows light and the lighting subtle and I feel it really added some pop.

Differently Morphous: Thoughts
The reason I listened to this book last out of Yahtzee's books is that the blurb saying the phrase "dealing with the forces of political correctness" made my eyes glaze over. The book is actually pretty good though, perhaps my favourite Yahtzee book so far, my only real complaint about it is the aforementioned angle, where it tries to be a satire of being overly politically correct, but the kind of satire that takes absolutely no meaningful stance stronger than "this thing is a little annoying".
Towards the end, I chose to interpret this side of the book as being a satire of poorly implemented political themes in other fantasy stories, I.E, stories like X-Men where something fantastical is a metaphor for a real social justice movement, and which doesn't make sense if you scrutinise it a little bit, for example because superpowers being genuinely dangerous goes against the message. Another part of the story's stance about political correctness is the idea that people will talk on behalf of a minority that they're not a part of, on the one hand it's good to raise awareness , but on the other hand it's patronising for those people, like how the title is a play on the fact that "Differently Abled" as a term does not see wide usable with disabled people, a lot of whom will just call themselves disabled without any qualifiers. If either of these points were Yahtzee's intention, then I think that's a point against the book for not having a clearly defined stance. Even in the story, none of the fluidics or "dual-consciousness persons" ever say what their stance is in this matter to clarify this point.
Other than that, it's a fun read. Yahtzee has a tendency to write characters who have one of three voices, which is either Sarcastic, Uptight and Dim. The Jacques McKeown saga was very bad for this, but Differently Morphous has much stronger characters across the board, and the de-facto protagonist Alison achieved the heights of being a genuinely likable protagonist in contrast to Yahtzee's other books. She's more of a straight-man to the rest of the story's bizarre antics rather than his other protagonists being constant snarkers in complement with other snarkers.

I made another oc for my favorite book but this is his boyfriend. Im in the middle of the second one so if he gets a partner well damn. But anyways his name is Link, he was a star pilot- to which when quantum tunneling came around was abandoned- so he started his own team of misfits so now hes a space pirate. But one of the good ones. And meets WHATEVER THE MCS REAL NAME IS as mckeown con. Also links a thief working with a hacker, whatever some other thief wants.. so does he. Its just down to whoever gets it first

What's even worse is that I was in the Second Wind discord, didnt realize i had turned off the setting, and initially was like 'hey my maintenance notifs arent appearing???' in the SsV channel. Literally Yahtzee himself responded and was like 'did you turn them off?' So then I went through my settings and realize I had fucked up LOL. I was soooo embarrased >.> but it was extremely immersive and I'll probably keep them off for an entire playthrough sometime.
On the upside I did help catch a couple of spelling errors in-game that I saw Yahtz fix afterwards so I feel slightly redeemed.
There's a point in the story where it won't let you proceed until at least 2 teammates have 3 hearts. This is intentional: the final choice is random between all your crewmates w 3 hearts. You can manually save beforehand and reload to try different rng if you want. Only crewmates w 3 hearts will come with you on the final ship, the rest will stay behind.
Also idk if you've read the Jacques McKeown books but it's kinda? Insane? Because due to the nature of the way the game resets the Captain is someone who can change their nature but can never change their name, but Jacques McKeown is someone who takes 3 books to realize he can constantly change his name but will never be able to change his nature. Which puts the two characters in stark relief by total accident lmao, the literary parallels are so good.
Hole is absolutely the best character skill wise, I would recommend picking him up every single playthrough because of how much of a time-save he is. I highly recommend playing through the different personality types, they make the game have such a different vibe. Also the different crewmates have slightly different stories based on whether they're romantically compatible or not, so look out for those changes as you try different personalities! My least favorite captain is absolutely private apathy, while bitter apathy and upbeat egoist are my favorite so far.
Have you finished Starstruck Vagabond yet???? What did you think of the ending??? :3
@lokis-wager i DID and i LOVED it. but also hated it. I married sarge and so he died and i was very sad for him. Something I LOVE about Yahtzee's writing is how he can take a comedic tone and flip it to serious and earnest in a second. It broke my HEART that sarge died alone and scared, even though death was something he knew from his whole life beforehand. He got to step out of his genre while on the ship with us and then stepped right back into it for his final moments. It GOT me.
The universe reset too? Wild. Insane. All the notes that your crewmembers leave you are CRAZY like they're so understandably pissed and its just. wild. I haven't gotten to a 2nd round yet, but I DID find the egg altar already in my 2nd run here, so I assume my 3rd reset will get me back into the normal plot zone.
The egg is so interesting too and the whims of the God of the egg, and their weird interactions with the protagonist and it. Like. So many funky ideas happening there.
