I don't want to be a wet blanket, I love Halloween in pretty much all its ways of being... but when the decorative merch, t-shirts, etc, come out each year with the "witch this," "salem that" all emblazoned with "est 1692"...
Well, it always sort of leaves a bad taste in my mouth... because in the village in that year something really horrible happened.
Whether because of politics, land grabs, ageism/sexism, personal vendettas, economic competition, or ergot poisoned rye grain causing hallucinations and faulty thinking, it was all wrapped up in religious zeal and innocents were murdered.
So, every year at our Samhain program, I say their names and light a candle.

If you’re not familiar with the musical “Ride The Cyclone” and it’s current script situation with one of its main characters, this post is not for you! Thank you!
So I understand the “Ride the Cyclone” Fandom is really upset, including me ESPECIALLY and we all have a right to be, but I think at the same time, we all need to realize these four things regarding the “Ricky Potts script change” situation: Keep in mind I am NOT disabled so I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but I do want to share important things that I think most of the fandom needs to acknowledge:
Despite the change being an unnecessary piss poor decision and a HUGE downgrade compared to what the script was like before, we need to acknowledge that Ricky STILL has a disability. He may not have the same one he had before, but being mute from trauma is in fact a disability. I say this because everyone keeps saying he’s no longer disabled and that’s just not true. Again, it was still a bad change but his disability wasn’t completely erased like everyone keeps saying.
Disability representation in theater and casting more actors with said disability’s is something that NEEDS to be spoken up about, but harassing the creators and actors are NOT the way to do it. If you’re just telling the crew to off themselves and painting them as one note monsters, that is not getting anyone anywhere, and not helping.
Speaking of portraying people as one note, some of y’all honestly need to stop painting Brooke Maxwell and Jacob Richmond (the writers of the original script) as irredeemable monsters. Again, this issue in theater is something that desperately NEEDS to be spoken up about, and voices need to be heard, but as much as I hate to say it, we really DON’T know all the details on why the script was changed. We don’t know what was going through the writers heads, we DON’T know the full story, so seeing everyone say the writers changed it simply because they were ableist and nothing else are just jumping to conclusions way too early. Regardless if you think they’re truly ableist or not, regardless if you’ve lost all respect for them, these writers are still PEOPLE at the end of the day, and people make mistakes. There is always room to grow, there is always room to learn and improve. We need to actually speak up and inform them that this change was not a good one, instead of just screaming at them, sending threats and calling them ableist pieces of shit, something that I’ve seen SO many people do and it’s an issue. It’s hard to actually IMPROVE yourself when everyone is just calling you bad names and not seeing you as a layered person.
At this point of making this post, people really need to stop arguing with Kholby Wardwell (actor for Noel Gruber) on twitter. I don’t care if you like him, I don’t care if you don’t like him……STOP….arguing with him. I shouldn’t say everyone is, but there are a few, and there’s no point guys, stop harassing him. He’s made it clear on how he feels about all of this, and its obvious at this point, nobody can change his mind on his viewpoints. People also need to stop calling him ableist as well, because if you’ve read his twitter thread, you can tell he never had malicious intent. Of course I’m not excusing some of the way he worded or said things, but again, these issues for the RTC crew as a whole need to stop being viewed with a one note lens. While it’s not hard to say “theater needs to hire more disabled actors and make it accessible for them”- it’s ALSO not hard to NOT see everything as black and white, mainly the motivations behind the writers and actors. These are all things that need to coexist within the fandom, and people also need to stop pressuring the others to speak on this subject. Again, when you speak up about an important subject matter like this, doing it with aggression is not the way to go.
With all of that said, this script change has heavily disappointed me, even hurt me. I personally thought it was perfectly okay for Ricky to be a kid who got a degenerate disease at 6 years old and lost his ability to walk and talk, but somehow the writers felt the need to change it. It was unnecessary in my opinion, because I felt like the script wasn’t really the issue, it was casting able bodied actors as disabled characters, and getting rid of Ricky’s crutches five minutes into the show. That, as well as treating his disability as a joke, mainly the comments by Ocean. These were all criticisms the show has gotten over the years, so it hurts to see that what we got was the writers idea of “improving” that. Instead of “improving” it however, it felt more like they erased the issue so they wouldn’t get controversy and could avoid the problem, without putting in the effort. HOWEVER, despite that I don’t truly feel like that was the writers intentions. For now, I’ll give the writers the benefit of the doubt, because I do believe that they truly felt like they were helping and encouraging the disabled community, even if the outcome didn’t turn up that way. Again, we STILL don’t know the full story, so I sincerely hope Brooke Maxwell and Jacob Richmond come out with an official statement soon giving us the full insight to why they did what they did, since the new script has gotten so much backlash. It’s clear this change has done more harm than good, and with respect, I hope the writers can be educated and more open minded to why their idea wasn’t the best at all. I have always praised the writing of this musical, I haven’t been in the fandom that long but it has become one of my current favorite musicals of all time, and Ricky Potts has always been a character I adored, and he deserves SO much better. For all of this to happen because of one huge fuckup, hurts. At the end of the day, we all want the same thing. We all want disabled people to be treated like human beings, with respect, and have more accessibility, not just in theater, but EVERYWHERE. We all have a right to be mad, we all have a right to speak up, and I just hope that as a society we all can educate one another without it being taken too far. I sincerely wish the fandom, the writers, everyone, can bounce back from all of this, and society improves as a whole when it comes to the disabled. I will still continue to enjoy Ride the Cyclone, and watch it over and over because no script change can get in the way of my enjoyment of the show. With that said, things NEED to change, and I especially hope the Mccarter Theater gets the consequences to their horrendous action of illegally firing it’s only disabled actor. With that said, feel free to say your thoughts, feel free to disagree, I just needed to get this all out. Thank you for reading.

self para: monty’s song
mentions: jacob oh ( @jacoboh ), katherine russell ( @kattcalled ), brooks azar ( @brxxksazars ), kaeo ‘clem’ dupont ( @dearclem ), melany phillips ( @lanyphillips ), malachi phillips ( @malachiphillips ) and lunara kaplan ( @lukaplan ) trigger warnings: death, death mention, stabbing
something felt off.
it has been bothering him all night, yet montez has chosen to ignore it, nor speak about it, given how it was just the paranoia that the deaths have left him, and the fact that he had an encounter with death himself. it couldn’t just happen more than once in a span of a couple of months, right? he shrugs the thought off, and focused on the people whom he loves surrounding him.
jacob, who besides lu, has been there with him through it all, the ups and downs, the relationships that have blossomed, the heartbreaks, the one who witnessed his journal with the woman he loves, the one he holds close as they just enjoy everything around them, the game on the television and the people shouting. perhaps, jacob may be the first person who was well aware of how he truly felt for lu, the one who…even though his mind has forgotten, made his heart remember. he opened montez’s eyes and made him realize that all these years, he had been in love with her. he gives him a grateful look, even though he obviously was focused with something else.
kat, someone who has been with him through his recovery, the one who remained optimistic when he felt like he wasn’t anymore, hope stripped off of him. she is a ball of fire, one who encouraged him through the hardships, even though it’s evident that he will never have his memories of the past two years back again. he could always create new memories with her and their friends, and the rest of the people he loves dearly.
brooks, his work husband, someone who has never failed to make him laugh all the time, especially during on rough days for them, after a rough class, or rough meetings, he was always there for him as much as montez is also there for him. that may not be the case as of late ever since the accident, but that has never changed for him. brooks made his stay at wardwell comfortable, lifting the pressure of being as great as his parents off his shoulder without ever knowing it.
clem, his platonic soulmate, his bestest friend in the whole world, bubs. they may not have been best friends for as long as he had been with most, but his bond with clem is deep beyond words. she was that big sister he’s never had, one he’s always talked about and tinkered brains with, and he had been that one person she was comfortable sharing a part of her she hasn’t shared with anyone else, and he is honored by it, the feeling of knowing she trusts him greatly. despite of how her breakup with his brother has severed their friendship a little, it was just nice to have her back in his life. it was nice to have his bubs again.
melany, the person he looked up to the most, especially when him and malachi were both at their lowest when their parents have died. he knew he should’ve been there for her more, be the shoulder she leans on through it all, but she stood on her own and got through it all. if he were to be honest, she is not only the smartest, but also the strongest out of them three, and he truly admires her for that. he wouldn’t be as strong as he is today if he didn’t have her in his life.
malachi, someone he is lucky to call his brother, someone who stood as the parent for him and melany when their father passed, and their mother slipped away from them too. there were things they don’t get to agree on much sometimes, but they’re always there for each other, especially with all the trials and tribulations they’ve been through their lives together. he looks at him, with a smile on his face as his brother lovingly stares at aranya who stood beside him, no matter how hard and complex it is, he hopes this is the love his brother truly deserves this time.
and lastly, the woman in his arms, lu, who has been laughing along the joke that was just being said in their booth. he felt so complete, happy, contented with the person he loves. all he could do is look at her and think about the memories he still has of them for most of his life, how before he truly fully realized it, his heart knew, and even through the accident, it has never forgotten. he has never forgotten his love for her. lu looks up at him, and he smiles, whispering “hello,” as he kissed her softly on the lips, hoping she knows how grateful he is to have her with him, wherever they are.
being able to focus on the positive things, helped him shake off the negative ones, and he instantly felt better. after a couple of moments, he excuses himself to go to the bar and get himself a drink. he orders his father’s favorite, a whiskey sour, and he turns his back on it for a moment to take a photo of the booth he was in with lu and their friends, a memory he doesn’t want to lose this time, at least, now it stays through a photo. he then retreats from his previous position and takes a sip of his drink, attention on the television for a little bit, as he tries to understand the game his brother is invested to. out of nowhere, his vision starts to blur, and mindlessly, montez was making his way out of the place, through the swarm of the crowd, his needed some air. he then finds himself what seems like an exit, and without much thought, he runs out, not really noticing the fact that he has company. though, it doesn’t take him long to notice them, and the way they were watching him.
“m’sorry,” he blurts out, shaking his head to himself. “don’t mind me.”
“not minding it at all.”
what they say makes him glance up to get a glimpse of them, and as he was about to say something in response, there’s this feeling of something that has just pierced through his stomach, and without hesitation, it was pulled out, and once again punctured in different places, for at least two or three more times, until the last impales his chest, which makes him drop down to his knees, and eventually, he lies on his side.
“i think he’ll get the message.”
another figure shows up, and montez was too out of it to figure out who they are, blinking a couple of times as he still tries to, before he lays flatly on his back this time, gurgling up on blood and having it spill down his cheeks, whilst he looks up at the sky this time. and as he takes his final breath, a tear slips from his eyes.
'cause i've been waiting from that first sweet breath for to lay me down with my love and rest i know you're hurting, but it's not the end so hold on, darlin', i will see you again hold on, darlin', i will see you again hold on, darlin', i will see you again

I feel. Incredibly uncomfortable talking about this but I hate my grandfather with my whole being for what he did to me and what he made me do. He KNEW I was mentally unstable, he KNEW once my life started crumbling I would be reliant on him. He knew much much I loved my daughters, and my wife, and even that blasted horse...he knew and he made me kill them all and then used my body to make me write that I felt nothing. It hurt. I ate Catherine out of desperation, yes, but also love because she had been ripped away from me and I wanted her back! And...oh god, when I killed Erine, my friend Erine...I miss him. He only wanted what was best for me. He was so worried about me and Cathy and the girls...and I killed him and gave his soul to Grandfather because that's what he wanted. I had so much blood on my hands at that point and he KNEW I would go to him for comfort and I HATE what he did to me then. Then finally...my sweet Falcone...I nursed him back to health. I wasn't a monster. He was trapped on the island anyways, his boat was gone, he couldn't leave...oh, what I would give for one more night with him, feeling his warmth, his heartbeat under my hands...I didn't want to kill him. I didn't. But I had to. Because of Grandfather. I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him I hate him I HATE HIM.

Good evening. My name is Catherine Graves and this is Nightrest News.
Jacob Oh was found unconscious in Fog Gate just an hour ago after sustaining serious injuries due to a car crash. His Mercedes-Benz had travelled down the steep embankment leading into Collins Cove before colliding into nearby trees. According to our sources, Oh, a math teacher at Wardwell Academy, is currently receiving treatment at Griggs General.
What our eyes and ears on the ground are telling us is that law enforcement is treating this as an attempted murder and not as a vehicular accident. The crash site has been taped off and the local sherrif is on site. While we await an official statement from police, sources are saying that a cell phone, believed not to belong to Oh has been retrieved from the vehicle.
Oh was previously seen at Wardwell Academy, where the school acted as a shelter for numerous members of the community during this recent snowstorm. If anyone has any information in relation to Jacob Oh and the accident, please contact local law enforcement.
For those traveling on the road, drive slow and be aware of icy conditions as the snow plows continue to clear up the streets. As always, stay safe. I’m Catherine Graves and this has been Nightrest News.
