Considering A Conifer - Possibly Pondering A Ponderosa Pine - Individual Section Photos (although it could be a different species - if you’re a tree expert please confirm or correct me. I compared this with a Douglas Fir and a Southwestern White Pine and neither look quite right. The segments on the bark of this tree are not as wide as photos of Ponderosa Pine but it does seem a better match then other species) I took multiple shots panning up a ponderosa pine beside the Jacks Creek Trail in Cowles/Tererro, New Mexico. In the previous post I used a collage app to line them up (more or less) from top to bottom. In this post I have posted the individual photos with cross-sectional views. Daisies Alongside Jacks Creek Trail, Cowles, New Mexico - 2 One of my favorite places to get away from it all is up in the mountains and mountain valleys by Cowles & Tererro, New Mexico and the surrounding Santa Fe National Forest including The Pecos Wilderness. As I am disabled this is ideal because you can drive up into the mountain valley and take short hikes like this on the Jacks Creek Trail. In August of 2019 the flora was particularly lush due to an unusually wet year (well wet for New Mexico at least). This caused wildflowers to bloom along the mountain trails. You can also see ponderosa pine and aspens along the hillside. I really hope to visit again this year along with other locations in northern New Mexico. I have included a collage of Google Earth views of the area the photo was taken. Eye Of The Aspen - Santa Fe National Forest - Jack’s Creek Trail I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the trunk of this Aspen “looking” at me! It is a matter of being there to take the photo when the bark and it’s pattern just happened to look like an eye. Aspens by the Jack’s Creek Trail near Cowles, NM The aspens that grow here are Quaking Aspen and are a unique species because a group of Aspen are actually a single organism. More about that: “Quaking aspen propagates itself primarily through root sprouts, and extensive clonal colonies are common. Each colony is its own clone, and all trees in the clone have identical characteristics and share a single root structure. A clone may turn color earlier or later in the fall than its neighbouring aspen clones. Fall colors are usually bright tones of yellow; in some areas, red blushes may be occasionally seen. As all trees in a given clonal colony are considered part of the same organism, one clonal colony, named Pando, is considered the heaviest and oldest living organism at six million kilograms and perhaps 80,000 years old. Aspens do produce seeds, but seldom grow from them. Pollination is inhibited by the fact that aspens are either male or female, and large stands are usually all clones of the same sex. The reason for the profusion of wildflowers and other vegetation was last summer’s monsoon rains common to New Mexico during July and August, particularly in the mountains. In fact driving up last year we came across places where there’d been some flash flooding in the last day or two. There were wildflowers at every turn in the trail which made the hike a bit more enjoyable.
