Spotted Sandpiper on a rock in the Pecos River near Cowles, New Mexico I handed my camera to a friend to take the photo. It came out great but I didn’t know what it was. I contacted a New Mexico ornithologist who identified it. Daisies Alongside Jacks Creek Trail, Cowles, New Mexico - 2 One of my favorite places to get away from it all is up in the mountains and mountain valleys by Cowles & Tererro, New Mexico and the surrounding Santa Fe National Forest including The Pecos Wilderness. As I am disabled this is ideal because you can drive up into the mountain valley and take short hikes like this on the Jacks Creek Trail. In August of 2019 the flora was particularly lush due to an unusually wet year (well wet for New Mexico at least). This caused wildflowers to bloom along the mountain trails. You can also see ponderosa pine and aspens along the hillside. I really hope to visit again this year along with other locations in northern New Mexico. I have included a collage of Google Earth views of the area the photo was taken. Eye Of The Aspen - Santa Fe National Forest - Jack’s Creek Trail I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the trunk of this Aspen “looking” at me! It is a matter of being there to take the photo when the bark and it’s pattern just happened to look like an eye. Pecos River with a swimming muskrat (I think) or possibly a small beaver. After reviewing descriptions I believe this is most likely a muskrat as it is a bit small to be a beaver and there was no dam. I took this photo in the later 2000s in Cowles, NM where the Pecos River passes by the pond created by humans. The mammal is swimming with a stick or stem in its mouth near the far bank of the river to the right of the stump with a gathering of sticks and the little swimmer’s possible home. #PecosRiver #CowlesNewMexico #Muskrat #PossibleBeaver #AquaticMammal

The reason for the profusion of wildflowers and other vegetation was last summer’s monsoon rains common to New Mexico during July and August, particularly in the mountains. In fact driving up last year we came across places where there’d been some flash flooding in the last day or two.
