Tre Kronor and the death of everyone

Expanding on my previous post on soaps doing all the outrageous things first: I really do want to celebrate the worst, best, and silliest final scene of a TV show, namely the old Swedish TV soap Tre Kronor.

The script writer Cilla Jackert recently explained in the podcast Snedtänkt that she'd previously worked at the TV station's call center, where she had to take calls from people who wanted to know "what happened later" about shows that had ended. And she tried to say, "nothing happened later, the show is over," but it didn't work.

Hence, when she was given the chance to write the final episode of Tre Kronor, she decided to make sure no one would have to ask what happened later. So the show ends with resident psycho priest Sten Frisk (a name that ironically means Super Healthy) loading himself up with explosions and blowing up nearly all the characters.

Now, the ACTUAL music after that shocking event was the regular theme song for Tre Kronor. Which is this:

I didn't see the ep at the time - I watched the show in the early seasons but had long since tuned out by then - but I heard of it. EVERYONE heard of it. It was a massive topic of conversation. The newspapers wrote of it.

I don't think anyone went, "Ah, what a stunningly great idea!" But if all PR is good PR, Tre Kronor succeeded.
