Oh my gosh, they all have gorgeous eyes! -🐈‍⬛
I will take this as an opportunity to give y’all some eye facts about the predecessors :)
- Qorbyn gets her eye color not just from Ozpin but also from Merle!
- Qrow’s eyes are slightly lighter than Qormac’s because of Merle’s genes, his eye shape also looks more like Merle’s :D
- Alloy’s eyes are a more silvery color because of his overuse of his silver eyes, also hence the scars around his eyes.
- I always imagined that Silver eyes come in different shades, but have a few distinct features that help so you can tell if they’re silver and not just grey, for instance, the two little marks both of them have on the right side of their irises (this is actually canon to rwby!) and the fact that their eyes appearance metallic when light hits them.
- Summer and Ruby get their darker shade of silver from Valentina
- Red eyes are a dominant gene in the Branwen family, Hence Jackdaw, Qormac, Qrow and Raven, and Olivia all having red eyes.
- Silver and Golden eyes are recessive genes. Because of this, both of Ozpin’s parents don’t have golden eyes, while he and his grandfather do.
- Alloy sight gets progressively worse the more he overuses his silver eyes. At the time of the Young Leaders AU he’s mildly nearsighted and light sensitive. By the time of the Remnant Heirs AU his nearsightedness and light sensitivity are worse, thus requiring him to wear sunglasses in buildings with fluorescent lights or outside on sunny days, unless he wants to be left with a headache.
- Branwen eyes glow when they’re mad/emotional and also glow in the dark :)
- Ozpin’s eyes also glow in the dark but that’s because of magic stuff
- yes Qorbyn is bitter that her eyes don’t glow in the dark.

Some ideas I had for RWBY:
Raven and Qrow’s dad is named Jackdaw Branwen and they have an aunt named Maggie “Magpie” Branwen.
They also have cousins named Rook and Jay. Jay has a daughter named Starling.
Starling is the decoy Spring Maiden instead of Vernal.

FORGED for a scene from my muse's past that they think made them stronger in the long run
GLIMPSES OF THE PAST || ACCEPTING tw: abuse
"How dare you!" The old man raised his hand, the backside and knuckles smacking soundly against teenage skin. Before his training at Beacon, that would have left a bruise against Qrow's cheek. But now, it just bubbled against his aura. "You can't just walk out on this family! I made you what you are!" It wasn't the first time that Jack Branwen laid hand against his son, but it was about to be the last.
Qrow barked a laugh. "You? You haven't done a damn thing for me since the day I was born! I'd say you make a better bandit than a father, but you're pretty shit at that too!"
The hand moved again to attempt harm towards Qrow, but Qrow caught it this time. "I'm not staying here anymore. I found people who like me for me, and I don't give a damn about you anymore."
Jack's lip curled in a snarl, turning his tan face into an ugly feral thing. He yanked his hand away, then pointed towards the camp gate. "Go on, then! Walk outta here, just like your bitch mother! But you go, and you don't come back! Or I'll kill you myself!"
Qrow would have let that go and just walk out with his pack of beloved items, but Jack had to get the last word in and drag Dauria's name into it. He swung on instinct, decking Jackdaw square in the jaw before Qrow turned and left.

🐦‍⬛Part 1
Before going sober, Qrow "relaxed" by getting blackout drunk, preferably on Black Daniel's Whiskey. After his recovery, he instead drinks tea or takes naps (like the old man he's always been).
Qrow likes to think he's a good kisser.
When Qrow "goes on holiday", it actually means he's putting his Scroll on Do Not Disturb and finding someplace to seclude for a week straight. At home? Camping? Another kingdom? Doesn't matter, as long as nobody knows who he is and he can remain largely unnoticed.
Qrow prefers to sleep in a pair of purely grey slacks and a red hoodie. The hoodie is mostly for utility. Get too hot? Unzip the hoodie! Too cold? Zip it back up. Sun too bright? Pull the hood over your eyes.
I like to think the outfits we see the characters wear in canon material are like custom Huntsman/Huntress uniforms. When he doesn't have to leave the house, Qrow opts for pants that are roughly 2 to 3 inches too long and any clean t-shirt that doesn't require buttoning. He goes for minimum effort and maximum comfort. Back in his drinking days, he'd wear designer dress shirts, expensive leather shoes with comfortable inserts, and black dress pants. Not much different from his Huntsman attire, but he wanted to have nice clothes to go out and drink in.
Qrow's earliest memory was watching his parents argue. Their parents were head of the Branwen tribe at the time, with Qrow's father, Jackdaw Branwen, being native-born to the tribe and inheriting the position when his father, Jay Branwen, died in ritual combat. Qrow's mother, Dauria Thrushman, eloped with Jackdaw after she unwittingly helped rob her aristocratic Atleasan parents blind. (I might write more about this memory later in a separate thread.)
Qrow doesn't go out of his way to greet people unless he knows them, and he has a few tiers based on closeness and fondness. For acquaintances, a simple perfunctory nod will do. For friends, a smile and a wave, maybe calling them by a nickname if they're close enough. For family, he gives them some nudge or pat to let them know he's around. Summer and Ruby are the only ones he'll spend more than fifteen seconds greeting. v:I Want To Break Free - Qrow keeps his head down for the most part, but always lets Yang know he's around by cawing in his bird form before he enters line of sight.
Qrow has the basic Huntsman education given to him from Beacon Academy. Beyond or before that? Nothing. Qrow never desired to earn an education.
This sort of flexes depending on the timeframe, so I'll try to narrow it down. (Note that most of these will be reflective towards the Last Day of Summer verse.) Prepare for a long one. Pre-Canon: Qrow never bothered to plan for his future. He saw his life as a straight, unremarkable march to the grave. One day, either by Huntsman, police, Grimm, or fellow bandit, someone was going to kill him. Maybe even his own kid, if Qrow ever went down the chieftain route. He lived exclusively in the present, often indulging hedonistically in whatever vices he pleased, notably alcohol. Ozpin later helped temper those self-destructive tendencies and gave Qrow a purpose that he was proud to uphold. When he began to notice his feelings for Summer, he began to readjust those plans to include her, and perhaps a quiet life in a cabin or cottage on Patch. Volumes 1-5: After Summer's death/disappearance, Qrow threw himself fully into his work for Ozpin and his vices. His vision for the future became blurrier, but he knew that if he could make Remnant a better place for Ruby and Yang to inherit, then he'd do what he could. Volume 6: Qrow was shattered at Ozpin's betrayal. Over twenty years of service, mutating his body with magic, cutting ties with his tribal family, losing his wife, and relinquishing any possible time spent with his daughter were each sacrificial pieces of himself he'd given over to his work for Oz. His hope for a better world for anyone was gone. He stopped caring and became apathetic, drinking himself into a stupor as often as possible and preying to the gods that something might finally come along and kill him. Volume 7: By now, Qrow was finally starting to heal from all his losses and recoup after the drunken waltz across Anima. He begins to open up to Ruby about Summer, wanting and planning to share their family history with her. He also made plans to try to find his estranged maternal grandparents while they were in Atlas and considered buying a second home if they were still alive. After all, he and Clover were starting to become as thick as thieves. Volume 8: Once again, Qrow's plans for the future were dashed. Atlas was about to fall, Clover had died, and Qrow had never been able to reconnect with his estranged family. He didn't allow himself to plan any further than surviving Salem's onslaught. Volume 9: Qrow nearly relapsed when he thought Ruby and Yang were dead. Thanks to Oscar, he managed to keep going and keep his torch of hope lit. His plan for the future was to keep Shade safe and as welcoming as possible for when Team RWBY returned. Post-Canon: With Team RWBY back, Qrow turned his attention towards Ruby. She'd learned in the Ever After that Qrow was her biological father...they had much to talk about and work on. He's generally focused on the present again, but harbors some small hope that Ruby might want to live with him on Patch for a year or two after the war is over.
Qrow's hair is one of his most recognizable features. Some of it has begun to grey in his age, but it's had a feather-like quality to it ever since Ozpin gave him corvid transformation. It makes his hair naturally fluffy, nearly always styled, and grants it a natural sheen.

Unexpected Reunion (Closed)
@jackdaw-branwen started following exbranwenbirds
“Starling, don’t let go of my hand just yet, ok? There are lots of people here.” King’s uneasy gaze scanned the marketplace, “We need to agree on a meeting place first.”
“At least Patch is pretty.” She thought to herself, paying more attention to her daughter’s excited commentary than where they were walking, and as a result, she bumped into someone else.
“Oh, pardon me, I’m so sor...” The words died in her throat, recognition lighting up her one uncovered eye, “J-Jackdaw? Jackdaw, is th-that... y-you?”

Ozpin: [stands up from chair, glancing at Raven, Kyra, and Cinder] What kind of fool do you take me for?! She's a Maiden, she's a Maiden, you're a Maiden?! I'm a Wizard! Are there any other Maidens I should know about?
Jackdaw: [walks in] Bad time?

He rolled his eyes. Ozpin had more grace and patience for people than anyone Qrow had ever met. If Raven came back, Qrow was certain Oz would be glad to have a returned ally. "I don't care if you worked for Oz or not. I'm talking about your real family. Not those cutthroats dad has roaming the countryside in Mistral." There were still many bitter feelings about the Branwen tribe within Qrow.
"You remember how they treated me," he remarked. "You didn't have to worry about that. You were dad's favorite. You always thrived in that environment and didn't have to worry about the beatings he dished out to people who 'didn't cut it'."
Their father, Jackdaw Branwen, was a vile bastard. Qrow wasn't sure if Jack ever laid hands on their mother the same way he did on Qrow, but he was certain she'd been welcomed back into the fold like a prodigal daughter if she didn't challenge him for ruler's right via lethal combat. "And wasn't just him. I got cursed and left for dead more times than I could count. They abandoned me way before I left."
This was a horrible reunion. He'd simply wanted to check in on his sister, enjoy his drink, then get back to work. But now it was a pissing contest to see which of them could get under the other's skin first.
"Mom knew it was a shit place to be, too." Dauria had vanished without a word one night, leaving them in the hands of their father. Qrow's thoughts occasionally drifted to where she'd ended up. But she'd never reached out, so must not have cared...or died. Either way, she wasn't in his life anymore.
Raven bit back a scoff with heroic effort; of course Qrow wouldn’t listen. Why did she even bother–?
…because even after all this, he was still her brother. Because she could see the black thunderheads piling up on the horizon, and it burned in her chest to leap right to Summer Rose and ask what the fuck she was thinking, going along with Salem’s madness even now that their daughters were attending Ozpin’s school—and she couldn’t do that, so here she was instead trying the next best thing.
“I’m not on Ozpin’s side.” She ground the words out through clenched teeth. He’s no better than Salem is. Monsters, both of them. Sourly, “And you know he wouldn’t trust me if I did come crawling back. That ship sailed when we lost track of Spring.”
Her gaze flickered in the direction of Qrow’s little assignment, pointed. Spring had been her responsibility—and when Raven saw the girl beginning to crack under pressure, she’d done what she had to do. Even if it meant burning her bridges when Ozpin told her to bring their runaway maiden back and Raven lied through her teeth about the girl’s semblance interfering with her own. Can’t find her. Sorry.
No one ever fucking believed her, but by then she was already halfway out the door.
But even if she wanted to come back now, she’d have to explain what happened to the last spring maiden after Raven helped her escape.
Lips thinning, she added, “Besides, I can’t just abandon the tribe.”

Vesna blinked. It had just been an offhand comment. She... she hadn’t expected that to work. She glanced down at her own hands and then back to the understandably shocked woman in front of her. “You... you can hear me? You can see me? Can I...?”
She reached out and grabbed (actually grabbed!) the other woman’s wrist. She could touch her! She was physical! Vesna let go as quickly as she had grabbed on. She slapped a hand to her forehead and let out a laugh that sounded equally desperate and relieved. “I can’t believe it, I’m...” She trailed off, remembering that the person could see all of this.

“Sorry! Sorry! I’m not used to...” Corporeality. Existence. “Everything. I didn’t think you’d respond. So sorry! You’re having this big moment, and then I trample in with my stuff, and ugh. No, please, go on! You were venting! I don’t want to interrupt.”

“Dumbass, you’re really hurt.” Karma was a mix of concerned and angry. “You didn’t need to step in, I could of handled it...” In reality, the Grimm they were trying to take out surly wasn’t like the others that they’ve encountered before.
She was careful as her hands moved over the spot that was injured but she was too inept to do anything about it. “We have to go back, and Ill have to carry you.” She saw no other way around it, even though her own wounds made it hard to do much, they would have a clear path back to their camp.

So, how would Qormac and/or Merle feel about Jackdaw meeting her grandkids?
What would a meeting between the twins be like with her?
So Jackdaw doesn’t even really get the chance to meet her grandkids.
As Merle (at age 14) promptly challenges her to a battle to the death for the title of chief and ends up killing her
But, in a hypothetical scenario where Jackdaw is still alive:
She wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near her grandkids.
After Qormac and Merle have the twins Qormac spends a lot of his time staring at and thinking about the kids and what they mean to him.
He just can’t wrap his head around his mom’s treatment of him. Was being a bastard child and a bringer of death that much of a burden that she felt the need to hurt him constantly like she did? Whatever the reason, he swears silently to never give the same sort of treatment to his kids, ever.
He’ll make sure they know nothing of what she did to him growing up. And that they never ever meet her.
Merle would be very protective of the twins at even the mention of her mother in law. Being trained into being the next spring maiden, she would take careful measures to ensure Raven would know how to take care of herself while still being very motherly to her, trying to show as much care towards her as possible. As for Qrow, she tries her best to reassure him when he finds out about his semblance, trying to make sure he doesn’t deal with the self hatred that his father got.
Merle eventually passing along the Maiden powers was never her intention. She doesn’t die, rather (mainly bc of a headcanon I have) just passes them along to Raven. But ultimately one she had to make when Salem’s people came knocking at her door.
Overall. No. Both in the hypothetical situation that she is alive, and in the canon of the predecessors and young leaders au, the Branwen twins know little to nothing about their grandmother.

"There's this... message. From the person I'd consider my father." She began, frowning slightly, "It's not... It's a pretty shitty message, but it was the first thing I saw when I, uh, first woke up and the last thing I have of him."
"And on my birthday, I'll rewatch it; wake up real early, get all my moping done before anyone else is awake."

“What do you mean?” She asked, cocking her head slightly.
“How is it your fault?”

Y'all I am very excited to say that I have a piece in the upcoming anthology "Clamour and Mischief" from Clan Destine Press!
Clamour & Mischief is about the corvidae family of birds (ravens & crows) and my story is a retelling of the tale "The 7 Ravens." It got downsized to only 3 ravens, but it did keep its creepy nature. <3
Edited by Narrelle M Harris @221b-hound
Artwork including spine art above by @altocello
A clamour of rooks. A mischief of magpies. A storytelling of crows.
All the corvids – the rooks and ravens, the jays and jackdaws, the crows and magpies – have the best collective nouns. A parliament and a party. Tidings and titterings, bands and trains. An unkindness.
Clamour and Mischief brings a veritable storytelling of crows to the corvidae, the bird family known for intelligence and cunning and for their connection with folklore and urban legends. These storytellers come from around the world and include award-winning and -shortlisted authors as well as emerging writers and fledgling authors in their professional debut.
This anthology’s sixteen striking stories are imbued with all the humour, darkness, wisdom, artfulness, vengefulness and magic of the birds that inspired them. Take them as a jest, a guide, or a warning – but don't, whatever you do, ignore them!
Narrelle M Harris and Clan Destine Press are proud to announce the Table of Contents for Clamour and Mischief, due for release in the last quarter of 2022.
