☼ ┈ Settling down and starting a family has always been low on Jack’s list of priorities. It just isn’t something that fits into the life he’s chosen for himself, the path he’s forged. But that’s all assuming a family has to be a spouse, kids with his genes, a suburban home and an office job. Jack doesn’t have a single one of those things (though the ‘office job’ part is debatable at this point), but he sure as hell has a family. His close friends in Overwatch fill that role in his life just fine, and… there’s her.

     Fareeha isn’t his daughter by blood, but the bond between them is awfully similar to what Jack imagines that must feel like. He adores that child, so much so that he often finds purpose where he thought he lost it. He wants to protect her; he wants to make the world safe for her.

     She’s asleep on his lap again, her small body curled up inside his strong arms as they sit on the couch. He’d worn her out. It’s easy to keep up with the five-year-old’s bursts of energy, and he’s gotten good at exhausting her with playtime to get her to take a nap. It gives Ana time to rest, and it gives him a chance to be with Fareeha. Now, with a children’s film playing softly on the television, Jack feels more at peace than he has in a long time. He’s careful as he shifts so he doesn’t wake her up as he leans down to press a kiss to her dark hair.

     It’s been too long, but nothing has changed for him. He knows he’s lost her, to some extent. He knows he’s let her down. He knows, and that awareness is a heart heavy with guilt, that sinking feeling in his gut. Despite what’s changed for her, he still feels the same looking at her now as he did when she was only five years old, safe and ignorant in his arms. He feels warmth. He feels adoration. Devotion. Pride. He feels all of it, and with it, tears stinging in his eyes.

     She’s fallen asleep at her workbench, pieces of her suit littered about the surface, surrounding her head. Jack knows from experience how uncomfortable it is to sleep in such a position, so he carries her to her quarters, gets her settled into bed as he used to do when she was young. Before leaving, he presses a soft kiss to her forehead.

     He doesn’t believe in the Recall, but he believes in her.

When Jesse arrived for his first day around Overwatch and Blackwatch, he was deadly silent. Each jeer or push was ignored. He seemed almost catatonic as he went wherever he was told. The hat that he kicked and screamed for when he was locked away was held loosely in his free hand as he was moved. Matted hair that was impossible to save was shaved away in front of the crowd that followed. He didn’t cry or fight it.

But it was plain as day that each movement was humiliating for him. The close he was pushed into was too big and the clothes he had were debated over. Some wanted to toss it all out, but some cared enough to at least try to save the thread worn clothes. Jesse didn’t voice a single thing. The new shaved head was hidden under the wide brim of the hat. 

When he was allowed, he vanished in a heart beat. He just kept running. His feet silent on the hard floors as he escaped out a window to sit on the out cropped roof. He wasn’t going to fall or jump, he was simply breathing. His hat was snatched off and tossed to his side, closer to the window. He was told he wasn’t technically alone. Other people near his age was around. But he hadn’t met a single one of them yet.
