In a world where Arthur accepted Magic sooner, allowing it to thrive and grow, where Arthur himself became immortal due to that decision, Samhain became stronger over the years.
The day when the line between the living and the dead is thinnest, the line breaks and allows ghosts and monsters to rise from the shadows, forcing Arthur and Merlin to fight and/or mediate with them all year round.
With time, they get used to them. With time, they know what kind of creatures all exist and how to integrate them properly. So the castle is overrin by Jack'o lanterns, Werewolves, vampires, nymphs, hippogriffs, elves, gnomes, dwarfes, basiliscs and cockatrice.
Eventually, they made a feast out of it. Welcoming, instead of throwing the magical creatures out.
They called it Halloween.
Happy Samhain, everyone.
Bonus:
One of the first days, Morgana stepped into the veil. Several centuries later, she returns, riding on Aithusa with the head of the giant King in her grasp and an axe in hand. She flies directly into a group of Trick or treaters.

My ideas for the PB&J duo halloween costumes. Mikey would do a great Jack'o Lantern because he shines and Donnie would be a daddy long legs because his battleshell arms make him look like a spider

I want Athia to have pumpkins. And I want Frey to teach the kids how to carve jack'o lanterns.
I want Cuff to be deeply annoyed by this but also secretly amused by it.
Edit: I also want Frey to carve a starling pumpkin.

Jackal Lanterns
The seeds of smashed Jack'o lanterns, if not swept up and thrown away, may take root. The twisted gourds mature over the course of a single year, until they rise to hunt the following Halloween.
Those in costume are invisible to Jackal Lanterns, though the stench of tricks will still draw them to their prey.
Prompt and process under the fold
Midjourney can't make a jackal lantern. It's current parser can't beat the 3 basket problem enough to put a pumpkin on a dog's head, maybe in v6.
Rather than use Dall-E 3 (because its slow as heck as I type it and I have another project baking there) I used the new in-painting tool. First, I generated the Jackals:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prompt: a painting of a supernatural jackal, orange fur, glowing green spots, breathing green fire, running down a country road, moonlit night, spooky, horrifying, painting by wayne reynolds and wayne barlowe, side view :: a jackal runs through a haunted forest at night, filled with floating green spirits, bare trees, halloween scene
I then inpainted the heads and muzzle areas, and a section around the head big enough for an appropriate gourd, and changed the prompt to:
Prompt: a jack o' lantern, breathing green fire, spooky, horrifying, painting by wayne reynolds and wayne barlowe :: a jack-o-lantern with sharp teeth, glowing with green fire

im on my annual rewatch of Over the Garden Wall and i really love how the second episode subtly sets up the whole premise of what the unknown is. if you dont already know what the town's name is pulling from (Potter's Field), then the reveal that everyone in the town is pretty much dead is a total surprise upon the first watch, but when youve watched the show before, you'll notice that it perfectly sets up the idea of what the unknown is: its purgatory.
a lot of the plot and dialogue further alludes to this if you pay a little more attention:
beatrice refers to Pottsfield as a "ghost town" when first entering, which isnt entirely wrong
"arent you a bit early?" has the double meaning of both wirt not being a skeleton (therefore not ready to join pottsfield) and not being dead (therefore not ready to be in the unknown permanently, which is a big reason why he's looking for a way home)
the whole concept of the skeletons in Pottsfield using jack'o lanterns as a means of decorating themselves could be read as a play on how jack'o lanterns were originally made to ward off malevolent spirits- the folks in Pottsfield aren't malevolent, so they use them to celebrate.
"youll join us some day" meaning wirt and greg will eventually die.
