As they karaoked love songs, walked New York City streets hand in hand, and jetted off on a London getaway together, they looked every bit the picture perfect couple. "I think a lot of the time, you still have feelings for an ex, and sometimes it doesn't matter how long it's been," Harry tells J-14 exclusively. "Sometimes you feel like you have unfinished stuff, and it's okay to get back together with them." "No one will ever be perfect"

Is Harry Going Solo? From a solo album to a major movie role, J-14 investigates rumors of a One Direction breakup!

When Harry Styles arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on May 1, carrying a brown bag over his right shoulder, a purplish phone in the left pocket of his jeans, and his grey shoes loosely tied, one thing was missing—his bandmates. For the first time since One Direction achieved international fame, one of the members had flown solo to L.A., sparking rumors that Harry was exploring other career options, including the possibility of leaving One Direction for a solo career.

Harry was all smiles stepping off the plane at LAX without the rest of 1D, fueling speculation of a band breakup.

Early Performances

Growing up, Harry always loved performing. He wore his sister's grey tights to play a mouse in a school production of Barney and dressed as Buzz Lightyear for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Singing Elvis Presley songs on a karaoke machine gifted by his grandfather was a favorite pastime with his cousins.

However, it wasn’t until eighth grade that music became his true passion. That year, he made a new friend, Will, who asked him to join a band.

"I was really nervous," Harry says of those early days. "I’d only ever sung to myself in the shower or the car. I knew I could carry a note, but I didn’t know how well I’d do in front of others."

Harry’s natural talent quickly shone. He won school competitions and became the lead singer of White Eskimo, performing at local weddings. "I loved being on stage, and I wanted to do it more and more," he recalls.

Solo Ambitions?

Harry had always thought about auditioning for The X Factor as a soloist, but he didn’t consider himself a solo artist. However, his mother, Anne Cox, saw his potential and took action.

"My mum filled out the application form and sent it off for me," Harry says. "I’m so grateful she did."

While Harry earned early praise as a soloist on The X Factor, he found his true calling as part of a group.

"The best moment for me was when we were told we’d be put in a band together," Harry says. "I remember thinking, ‘This is going to be a lot of fun.’"

Stronger as a Group

When rumors surfaced that Harry had flown to L.A. for secret meetings about a solo album—or to play a young Mick Jagger in a movie about The Rolling Stones—his mother stepped in to clarify.

"What a load of rubbish," Anne tweeted.

The truth? "Harry was on vacation in L.A.," his representative confirmed.

Harry brushed off the rumors, knowing he’s happiest as part of One Direction. "Very early on, we realized that this was the best thing for all of us. We’re stronger as a group," Harry told J-14. "We can take on whatever is thrown at us—together."

Rumors: Fact or Fiction?

RUMOR: He punched a photographer! A story claimed Harry punched a photographer at the Men in Black 3 premiere. Harry set the record straight: "I definitely didn’t punch anybody," he told J-14. FALSE

RUMOR: He’s dating Taylor Swift! After Taylor Swift was spotted enjoying One Direction’s performance at the Kids’ Choice Awards, rumors swirled about a romance. "We met," Harry says. "She’s very nice and very talented. We’re friends." FALSE

RUMOR: Harry died in a car crash! A fake story circulated online about Harry’s death in a car crash on Route 80. Thankfully, it was entirely untrue. FALSE

Harry’s #1 Girl? His Mom!

Despite being linked to various women, from Caroline Flack to music video co-star Emma Ostilly, Harry’s top priority is his mom, Anne.

"My mom and I have always been close," Harry says.

Whether texting or tweeting sweet messages, Harry ensures his mom knows she’s his number one.

"I’m such a mommy’s boy," Harry admits. "We’ve become better friends than I ever imagined."

im just thinking abt how tipsy-alex, right after watching june dancing w henry in the royal wedding, is thinking abt the first time he saw henry in that j14 magazine when he was twelve. and hes thinking abt how perfect prince henry was in that candid photo of him all sunny and warm smile and confident. how he's so drawn to that henry that he keeps on sneaking into june's room just to stare at that picture and run his finger on poster-henry's hair "as if he could somehow feel the texture if he imagined it hard enough". how he wud think of that very picture the more his parents climbed political ranks and wished he had poster-henry's confidence. he even thought of taking the poster right out of the magazine but he ddnt bcs he knows he's going to rip it w his stubby fingernails. he ddnt even want to potentially ruin the poster like that's how he held that poster so special to him.

and then he actually met prince henry in rio and all of that expectations shattered. ruined. he felt a bit betrayed. disappointed. which immediately turned into dislike. he thought that rio-henry is the real henry. snobbish, arrogant, cold. and he cldnt blv himself that he wanted to be like "that".

but in actuality, henry is more similar to what alex thought abt j14 poster henry. warm smiles, humorous, blue-eyes and laugh that crinkles the corners of his eyes. confident henry (the first kiss! their first time!) henry all "pretty and flung-open" for alex. and alex fell in love with this henry.

what im getting at is that alex was alrdy obliviously drawn to actual-henry from the start. theyre written in the stars, soulmatism, together forever and in every universe.

HOLY SHIT THIS TOOK ME ALL NIGHT

1. The truth is… : Firstprince

Henry laughs a little when Alex finally tells him about the J14 magazine, the object of his confession sitting on the bed in their room in the lake house, still glossy with baby Henry’s photo after all these years. He was kind of planning on taking this secret to the grave. Okay fine, maybe not to the grave, he can’t do that to Henry. He’ll tell him eventually. Maybe after marriage though? But when he opened his suitcase during their weekend vacation in his dad’s lake house just to see the magazine that started it all lying on top of his packed clothes, with a post-it note in June’s handwriting “You’re Welcome :P”, and for Henry to walk in just to see Alex trying to figure out how to deal with the cursed magazine, scrambling to hide it behind his back, cheeks red and flustered, well, the explanation is demanded much sooner than he’d like to. So Alex flips open to the page with the first sight of Henry he’s ever seen, tracing over the faint grease marks left by his fingers throughout the year, and tells his side of the story, of being to oddly entranced by the little prince smiling on the page, sneaking into June’s room just to touch his hair, wondering how it would feel like underneath his fingertips, soft, golden locks twirled around his chocolate skin. The truth is, it felt kind of embarrassing to tell Henry that he has actually, subconsciously beaten Henry in the “who fell for the other first” competition. After all, he was kind of the person who started their initially antagonistic relationship, and he was the one who was too stubborn to admit that he liked talking to Henry when they were becoming tentative friends. He was also the one to tease Henry when his prince admitted he’s been in love with him since the day they met. But after he stammers through his confession, Henry just giggles, the sweet private smile when his ducks his chin. The last of the day’s sun shines through and highlights his hair, a golden crown, on the world’s most beautiful prince. Light pink dusts his cheeks, light sparkles in his eyes, and Alex is in love again. And all the stupid worry dissipates. The truth is, it doesn’t really matter who fell first. They’re here now, and no matter what they will always find their way towards each other. And that’s the universal constant.

6. Everything is telling them not to. : Taynick

“This is a dangerous idea.” Nicholas whispers.   “I know.” Taylor answers back. There are a million reasons why this is a bad idea. He hasn’t dated in years, and for a good reason, both emotion-wise and practicality-wise. His career is finally taking off in a direction he can be happy and even proud of, he’s been taking project after project, his schedule is filled to the brink… and that’s just the list of his personal concerns. There’s the issue of co-workers getting together, the issue of their personal relationship getting in the way of this production, the issue of neither of them being in a position where they can come out without their career being affected… And what happens if this doesn’t work, the memory of a beautiful summer tainted with the blood of a broken heart. Everything is telling them not to. Except their hearts. He didn’t expect to like Taylor this much when he took this project, or when he met Taylor in their chemistry test, or they were rehearsing intimate scenes, limbs tangled up while they tried not to laugh at their compromising positions. Truthfully, he really did see an immediate friend in Taylor. He didn’t expect to see more. It’s getting simultaneously harder yet clearer to draw the line between Henry and himself. Taylor is charming, and charismatic, and kind. That’s lovely, but that’s nothing new that Nick hasn’t realised as a friend. But Taylor being protective of him, being so caring and careful with him; that’s new. It’s different. And it’s… it’s making his heart beat faster and something warm in chest expand. He doesn’t know if it’s some sort of character bleed, of Alex’s attitude towards Henry creeping into Taylor. But a month into shooting, Taylor starts remember his breakfast orders, bringing his latte to set for him. During emotional-challenging scenes, he checks on him after every take and hugs him after they wrap, long arms around him, pressing him into his broad chest. He picks up the phone no more than three rings when Nick is rolling around on his bed, plagued by insomnia, It’s… nice. It’s not that Taylor’s pampering or babying him or anything, nothing of the sort, but it’s very endearing. And safe. There’s something so comforting about the way he and Taylor just connects and clicks, like a puzzle piece in the tapestry that makes him up finally finding its match to create another special thing. He can feel it, it’s precious, and rare, and miraculously beautiful. And Taylor can feel it too. Seeing as earlier today, two weeks before they wrap, he asked Nick for a dinner date to talk things out, figure out what are they going to do with this magnetic attraction.   Which is where they are now. “I’m in if you are.” Taylor says, his voice steadier than ever, and despite everything, Nick feels so, so safe, with his hands in Taylor’s larger ones, warm and loving. “We’ll figure this out. Step by step. Just like they did.” He faintly wonders if, in some weird, twisted arrangement of fate, they’re some sort of reincarnation of Alex and Henry, always tied by a red string of fate in every universe, in every name and identity. But regardless of whatever unknown forces are at play, right now, he’s Nicholas Galitzine, he’s an actor, he really likes his co-star, and he really, really wants to try this out. “I’m in.” Taylor smiles, brighter than a million suns. “Then let’s fucking do this, baby.”

Yeah I feel like I lost it at the end with the Taynick one... but hopefully this is okay?

The words that made Harry cry

Harry opens up about the shocking news that shattered his world. Harry Styles thought he had the perfect life growing up in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, England. "I loved it," he says. "I sometimes get flashbacks of when I was a kid. Everything seemed so big." Playing with his older sister Gemma and listening to Elvis with his dad, the idea that his happy family could ever be torn apart never crossed Harry's mind.

But when Harry was just seven years old, his familiar world suddenly came crashing down. One day, out of the blue, his parents sat him down and told him the horrifying news: "We're getting a divorce." Harry recalls, "I didn't really get what was going on properly. I remember crying about it."

That summer, as Harry struggled to come to terms with what the divorce meant, he, his mom, and sister moved out of their house and left his hometown for a new life in a more rural part of the Cheshire countryside. "Our new home was a pub, and my mum became the landlady," Harry says. Without his dad around, Harry had to find a way to fill the void in his heart. "There was this boy called Reg living nearby, and he was the only other kid in the area," Harry recalls. "We used to go every day to Great Budworth Ice Cream Farm—it's the same ice cream farm I later took all the [One Direction] boys to when they came to stay before The X Factor boot camp."

Gaining a Stepfather

A few years later, when Harry was 12, his family moved back to Holmes Chapel. But things weren’t the same as he remembered from his childhood. Life changed even more when his mom met a man named Robin Twist. "I really liked him," Harry says. "But my mom wanted to make sure that Gemma and I were okay with him being around. She worried about it a lot." Harry reassured her, knowing Robin wasn’t trying to replace his real dad, and he loved having him around. "I used to text him and tell him to come over because I thought he was a really cool guy," Harry says.

A few years later, Harry was "really pleased" when Robin proposed to his mom. "I remember getting a call from my mom and how happy I was when she told me they were going to be getting married," Harry says. "I've always got on well with Robin, and I still do now."

Harry knows that no matter what changes his family goes through or how far apart they are, his parents will always support and love him. And although Robin and Harry's mom hadn’t set a wedding date at the time, one thing was for sure: "I don't think it's very likely that One Direction will be playing at the wedding!" Harry joked.

1D relationship status

Harry caused a stir when he was caught kissing 18-year-old American model Emma Ostilly in New Zealand in April. But Harry quickly shot down the rumors. "She's just a friend. She's working over here," Harry says. "I prefer not to talk about it." Harry and Emma became close after she appeared in One Direction's music video for "Gotta Be You," which they filmed in Lake Placid, NY, last October. Harry's also been linked to Taylor Swift after the two hit it off at the Kids' Choice Awards. "She's very talented and very nice," Harry says.

Liam Payne was the reason I got into One Direction. I was a massive fan of theirs since 2010 or 2011, gone to multiple concerts, the theater for their movie, and even had dozens of posters covering my wall from head to toe from j14 magazines and such... The boys quite literally were my world as a preteen/teen.

I stopped following Liam's career and though I can't say I admired what I heard about him after the band broke up, I also can't deny the fact that Liam Payne was my original favorite... I remember buying everything purple and getting reinvested in Toy Story, trying to talk my mom into getting a turtle... I remember swearing that I would never talk of dreaded spoons.

It's crazy how tragedy brings back forgotten memories. I find myself missing the "old days" a lot more, this year...

I lost my Mom in May. She was my everything (and that's putting it lightly). I wish she was here with me today. If she were, she'd be sad too. She loved the band and went to the concerts with me. She would have held me and comforted me.

Instead, I found out late (and from a fucking supernatural meme). This year just feels so unreal.

I'll forever look back fondly on my years listening to 1D. I hope you can rest peacefully now, Liam. ❤️
