Pine for You by J.M. Leigh & Alexis Layne
Tumblr media
Rosie Atwood is overwhelmed. Christmas used to be her favorite time of year, but everything changed five years ago when her best friend ghosted her right before she could tell him how she really felt. And it’s all gone downhill since. When her sister dies, and Rosie’s left in charge of her young nephew, she’s willing to do whatever she needs to protect him from the Atwood curse. Including becoming a surrogate for her oldest sister in exchange for meals and a place to live. Her last dream is to turn things around for Waldvogel Farms. Holden’s grandparents are the best family she ever had, and she refuses to let them down. But being pregnant and thrust into the role of parent doesn’t make it easy. Then Holden Moore shows back up, ready to reclaim his spot in her life like nothing changed. Rosie thinks things can’t get any worse. Until someone starts sabotaging all the work she’d done to save the Farm. Is Holden behind the damage? Using it as an excuse to get close to her? Or is there something more sinister at play? Holden Moore never intended to leave Pinesbury behind. He just wanted to be a soldier. And he wanted to be the kind of man his best friend could love. But a close call on his first deployment made Holden reevaluate everything he’d ever known. Afraid he wouldn’t be there for Rosie or his family back home, Holden cut ties. Now he’s back in town, five years later, and ready to leave combat behind and right his wrongs. It’s just too bad Rosie isn’t ready to welcome him back into her life. But Holden is determined to change her mind. When things start going wrong at Waldvogel Farms, Holden finds himself blamed by the town that helped raise him. Juggling the hunt for the mysterious saboteur, rebuilding his relationship with Rosie, and fighting his status as Pinesbury’s Fallen Golden Boy wasn’t how he planned to spend his first Christmas back, but when an innocent gets caught in the middle, Holden has no choice but to tap into his old training or risk losing everything. With Happily Ever After on the line, will Rosie and Holden be able to heal old wounds and save Waldvogel Farms in time for Christmas? Or will it all go down in flames?
Review
Even though I’m not a fan of Christmas or Hallmark movies, I’m so glad to be able to read this Christmas-y breeze from J.M. Leigh, paired with Alexis Layne, on this story more than ready for the holidays and good enough to pair up with a great cup of hot chocolate. Being part of an ARC team has its perks, eh?
It was new to read J.M. Leigh in something different than her Anderson Security series, not at all surprising because there was also romance, and it was a nice gift to see that the security company wasn’t that far away. I obsessed over this point, hahah
(Best) friends to lovers will always be a huge trope for me (and one I would never live myself), executed with perfection in these pages. There was nothing to say (in reality, there was a lot, I don’t forget myself that I’m incessantly vouching for communication over all things), and it definitely could have been better the other way (by talking, of course), but there were some heavy and valid reasons and what matter most is that everything ended well. They both knew each other and understood why they did what they did, so there was nothing to hold against themselves. In fact, if they dared to hold something against the other, they would have been stopping the perfect future they never thought (or maybe they did?) they would have against themselves! And I’m definitely not into that kind of trope.
It wasn’t easy, and it could have been worse, but the thread connecting them was more than enough to help them overcome the situations surrounding their separation.
There’s nothing better (as bad as it can be) than a crisis to lead people to where they should be.
I personally hope that sentence doesn’t come back to bite me on my behind…
If there’s something that drove me mad while reading was the purposely evident (or at least to me) evil of the story. It was right there before my eyes and there was nothing I could do to help them! It would have been so easy to spot in advance if things weren’t as they were, and I’m going to believe that that was the trick. Overwhelmingly glad of the outcome, though, really hoping for our Anderson Security girl to get the opportunity she wants. Both of them, heheh
This story was a delight and it surprised me how little annoyed I felt about Christmas here. Everyone likes a little miracle, right? Why not take this one and spend a cozy holidays?

BOOKS
tagged by @saritasoyyo thank you!
Rules: in a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you.
ok, so i’ve read a lot crap... and sometimes i question my taste in books. so, don't think of this as recommendations. what so ever. Also, I don't tend to read solo books, and 9 out 10 times I accidentally pick up a series.
ASOIAF by grrm. I have a tattoo of the House Martell sigil enough said.
Six of Crows by leigh Bardugo. I first listened to this on audible and I know shocking... but if you've never experienced the audio version, it's such a good listen to. But also it's good on it's own too! I read/listened to this after reading a miserable series and it helped me out my depression. So say what you want about audiobooks lol
Wallflower verse by Lisa Kleypas. Did the series age well? No. But did this insp my love of historical romance? Yes. Also, I have read all of this series... there's a lot. I'm unashamed.
Scarlet Scars Series by J.M. Darhower. Tbh this is a spinoff of a pretty awful series and none of this should work for me... but there's something about reading this when you're in a depression or self-destructive mood that put things in an interesting pov.
Sweep series by Cate Tiernan. I read this when I was 14 going on 15. And oof reading it now it tough but I did love it as a kid and have three complete editions of this specific series.
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. This list doesn't have to be good lol I have the longest history with this series and it's just part of me... whether or not I like it.
Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. Such a promising start that left me hate reading by book 8. but did i finish the series? yes.
Gemma Doyle Trilogy by Libba Bray. I debated on adding this because I don’t know if it stuck with me for the right reasons, but i think about it sometimes and I even did a reread a few months ago.
The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot. I read this as an adult™ and the entire time I was like Meg definitely didn’t know how to write a character with depression respectfully and it shows. But I think for what it’s worth, as I’m not the targeted audience, it’s a fast and somewhat charming read. And the reason why I can never watch PD2 again lol
Beautiful Creatures Series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. This is another one that i was not the targeted demo, but it stayed with me in a way that some of the books I was reading around this time didn’t *coughs in romance novels*. I love the potential of the world and what it could have been. And I think about that potential a lot.
did you all need an explanation? no. but i was in a mood to talk about my weird book choices lol i did not follow the rules *looks away*
tagging (no pressure): @totchipanda @linearao3 @whatanybodygets @genuineformality and anyone who wants to talk about books

Misinformation by J.M. Leigh
Tumblr media
All Chloe Grant has ever wanted was to be a pillar of truth in a world of lies. Her hunt for answers led her to a career in investigative journalism, and that led to a relationship with Luke, the sexy Air Force pilot with a quiet wit and captivating smile. Everything was going great, then one breaking story opened a chasm so wide, neither had been able to build a bridge. Not that he’d been able to stay out of her bed, though. Which only made things worse. Luke Miller has only ever dreamed of flying. He escaped in the sky. Countless flight hours earned him a spot flying in the Air Force’s Special Operations Command, until one op-gone-wrong grounded him permanently. But he was quickly recruited into Anderson Security, and back into the cockpit. He got to fly, he got the girl. Everything was going great, then Chloe sunk her teeth into a case that jeopardized everything Luke had worked so hard to regain. But it wasn’t enough to for him to leave her permanently. And that was a problem. As Alpha Team rushes to capture their next best lead taking down a ruthless arms dealer, Chloe and Luke discover that only honesty can ensure a safe landing. It’s up to Luke and Alpha Team to decipher the secrets written in the sky.
Review
I can’t start without saying that I’m really happy to continue being part of J.M. Leigh’s ARC team. The first book (you can find my Misdirection’s review down here) was a blast, this second one was heartbreaking almost until the end. I’m writing this review because I enjoyed this journey as much as the first one, if you like military stories and women who break the natural order, you should consider reading it.
I won’t lie, my favorite character here was one of the main characters from the first book, because goddess, the change he went through after finding the love of his life is incredible, my favorite parts almost all have him being a loving partner. But I didn’t know how much I wanted to know about Luke until I started his story.
I will always love watching men being in love. Their thoughts, their doubts, their actions… They can be absolutely stupid (we, women, as much and as well) and do the total opposite of what they should and want, but there’s something so, so sweet about them being vulnerable, understanding their feelings, and deciding to feel them. Sooner or later, they will fall for them, and even when Luke was unnecessarily fighting against it, he was still doing acts of love (he can say he can all he wants, but he couldn’t deny it).
I would have very much liked it if he stopped fighting against it and finding excuses to not flow with it and just let himself feel it and do the correct things he should be doing from the start (he knew what they were, he just was consciously doing the exact opposite on PURPOSE), but I also understand the lengths they go to when there is fear. Fear is a powerful motivator to do things even against love.
I can crucify Luke, but Chloe wasn’t a saint either. She was as difficult as him, both of them being strong heads going against the exact thing they wanted. People, communication can build more than enough bridges, but more than the same amount can be burned down when there isn’t. I suffer so much when there isn’t, and more so when they’re avoiding it on purpose, but I at least got a proper and satisfying development at the end.
There is A LOT of (unnecessary) drama, they had the opportunity to fix everything and just made it all worse, but that’s totally human, completely understandable (sadly). Even when we know what we seek, we go against it for some reason, so they didn’t drive me as crazy as it was possible. The situation wasn’t good for them either, with more than one life-or-death moment to overcome (and just one is much more than enough). So, though I don’t really believe they both did the best they could at the time, they got lucky enough to be able to change it after it all.
Phrases that I liked so much that I marked them while reading
«I shifted in my stool so I was already smiling up at him when he turned to face me. Six-foot-too-many-inches—Seriously, how does he even fit a plane?—hovering right above me.» — Prologue.
«His smile could have lit up the room.» — Prologue.
«“I know it’s an Air Force base, Chloe, but you need to lock this door.”» — Prologue.
«I tried to keep my bouncing legs under control. Tried to mirror his neutral stance. But it was hard to be neutral when I was meeting with the actual President of the United States. I looked to my team leader, Theo, waiting to hear his response. Theo was sitting forward, hands folded on the table. Relaxed, but alert. Madi, Theo’s girlfriend and the newest member of the Anderson Security family, sat next to him. I was sure one of her hidden hands was on Theo, that had to be why he was so calm. Then again, he had met President Parker before, so maybe he just was calm.» — Chapter Two.
«The situation he was referring to happened a little over a month ago and brought Madi and Theo together. And then he almost lost her at least five times because her psycho ex and her former handler at the CIA decided to try to kill her at the same time.» — Chapter Two.
«I dropped Theo and Madi off at Theo’s place two hours ago and I was still parked outside the condo. I knew for a fact If I turned the ignition, I’d find myself pulling up to Chloe’s townhouse within five minutes. I had two choices, sit out here all night, or go back and talk to Madi. Although, she’d probably tell me to go to Chloe; but, if we talked long enough, it’d be too late. I was working on a minute-by-minute basis here. Trying to survive twenty-four hours in the same city as her.» — Chapter Two.
«“I love you, but goodbye,” Madi stopped him from coming closer with a kiss and turned him around.» — Chapter Two.
«“A job is a dumb fucking thing to give up happiness for.”» — Chapter Two.
«I lingered awhile and finished my own beer before I left, locking Madi’s precious reinforced door behind me. The thing was heavy as hell, and probably pointless, but Theo installed it because Madi had one single episode. The man would go to the ends of the earth, and jump, for that woman.» — Chapter Two.
«“Hey.” “Luke,” I whispered, by way of greeting. “I just came to talk,” he spoke quickly, cutting off anything I might have said next. Not that I knew what I was going to say next. “About?” “Us.” One word, two letters. Millions of emotions laced inextricably through them.» — Chapter Three.
«The woman put me through hell sometimes, but the look of pride on her face made it worth it.» — Chapter Five.
«“All right. Let’s get inside and see if Carter has any footage from this,” Theo directed, swooping down and scooping Madi up before walking toward the elevator. “Put me down,” she demanded, pushing back at him as we trailed behind, “I can walk.” “Baby, you’ve just been shot. Again,” he gritted out against her squirming. “Not in the legs, Teddy. Put. Me. Down,” he stopped walking and we all stopped, too, a few paces behind, looking uncomfortably between each other. I couldn’t see Theo’s face, but Madi’s looked steadfast and stubborn. It softened as Theo dropped her back to the ground. “Thank you,” we heard her say and watched Theo’s head tip forward in a nod before we all started walking again. Madi made it about two and a half steps before stumbling and Theo caught her. “I thought you said you could walk, baby,” he chastised softly. “I need to walk on my own, Teddy,” she started sternly, then finished more gently, “But that doesn’t mean I don’t need a little support.” Oh.» — Chapter Six.
«She said, then leaned forward, resting her elbows on the desk and rubbing her face in her palms. Theo found his way over behind her and dug his knuckles into her shoulders.» — Chapter Six.
«“Tell Chloe I’ll make her favorite lasagna if she stays with you,” another muffled voice added.» — Chapter Seven.
«“Okay?” His look of relief was combined with a fair amount of disbelief. I sort of didn’t believe it myself.» — Chapter Seven.
«Scared? Yes. Giving up? Not a chance.» — Chapter Seven.
«Luke was already shaking his head before Theo finished, “I don’t want Max in her underwear drawer.” “Luke,” I cringed. I didn’t entirely disagree, but he didn’t have to use those words exactly. “I’ll go,” Madi happily chipped in. Luke groaned, “I don’t know if that’s better or worse.” I looked at him questioningly. How could it be worse if she went? “Baby, no. It’s not safe. You need to go with Chloe,” Theo pulled Madi back away from me. “I’ll be fine, Teddy,” she leaned up and kissed him, “I came here, didn’t I? Max will go, too. We’ll be okay, we’ll meet up after.” “I don’t like it,” he said, shaking his head. She pressed her palms to his chest, “I know you don’t. I love you.” “I love you, too. Text me when you get there.” I blinked, surprised when he agreed instead of arguing more like he obviously wanted to. “Okay,” she agreed. “And when you’re leaving,” he added. “Okay,” she said again. “And if anything seems weird,” he kept going, worry blanketing his expression. “Okay,” Madi just smiled up at him patiently. Theo took a deep breath. “Okay,” he repeated on an exhale.» — Chapter Seven.
«And before I knew what I was doing, I found my fingers were kneading away the knots at the back of her neck. She tipped back into my palm and I dug a little deeper.» — Chapter Eight.
«“Please, Teddy, we'll go right now.” I tried to hold back a grin. An honest one. Her nickname for Theo made no sense to me at first, but the man did get all soft when he looked at her. Like right now, he looked like he was about to give in.» — Chapter Nine.
«I didn’t sleep at all last night. Not with Chloe right there, one wall away. Never, in the years I’d known her, had we ever slept in different beds under the same roof. Somewhere, in the back of my mind, a voice was telling me I was making the biggest mistake of my life.» — Chapter Ten.
«“Luke,” she glanced up at me, “you’re in or you’re out, decide now.” Shit. “In,” I didn’t even think about it.» — Chapter Ten.
«If she was out in the world right now, I was right there with her.» — Chapter Ten.
«Max was ambling down the stairs when the door swung open. “Need any he—Hey, watcha got there?” He cut himself off at the sight of the two girls cradling the kittens. “We found them,” Chloe said, “Obviously abandoned. We couldn’t leave them.” “But we need you to go back down and get cat food and stuff. The tourists were appearing,” Madi complained distastefully. Max plucked the kitten from her arms, “Sure. I’m supposed to meet Charlie halfway back later to get some gear. I’ll grab it then.” He turned and marched back up the steps with Madi’s eyes glaring daggers into his back. “That’s my fucking cat,” she muttered, ripping off her boots, and stomped up after him. “Max! Give me back my kitten!” “I think her name should be Muffins,” I heard him say. “No, Max, her name is Juneau,” Madi retorted. “Yeah, I don’t like it,” his voice carried over the ledge. I could hear shuffling feet and the sound of a pillow being tossed across the room. “Jesus,” Theo muttered, then trudged up the stairs behind them. “Stop. Don’t… Don’t freak out the cat,” he called wearily once he got up there.» — Chapter Ten.
«I had too many questions to figure out a question to ask.» — Chapter Eleven.
«He let me go and pushed himself up into the aircraft and sat on Madi’s other side, kissing her cheek and then making a call.» — Chapter Twelve.
«Gabriel turned his head, opened one eye to scowl at me. He wasn’t on Team-Tell-the-Girlfriends-Everything, but when the issue came up, he did tell me to tell Chloe as much as it took for her to not push the story. I thought I had.» — Chapter Twelve.
«even though I couldn’t see her, I could imagine the bossy look she’d have on her face, the one that made Theo do literally anything she asked, no matter how much he hated it. I didn’t get that, he did all this to keep her happy, so when did he get his happy?» — Chapter Fourteen.
«What if I die and she loses me? What if she dies and I lose her?» — Chapter Fourteen.
«It was the kind of line that worked on women like me, I was sure. Women who should consider themselves lucky to have his attention. And, maybe, once upon a time, it could have worked on me. He could have sucked me in, had me wrapped around his finger. But I’d already met my person, I knew what love looked like. What it felt like at that first moment, and this was definitely not it.» — Chapter Fifteen.
«I didn’t want to let her go. I never wanted to let her go again.» — Chapter Sixteen.
«Still, Theo was coming out without Madi.» — Chapter Sixteen.
«his weight leaning against Myles which I hadn’t expected, and I knew I was right. I was looking at a man who’d probably just lost his whole world.» — Chapter Sixteen.
«“Fuck the mission, Madi. I need you.” “You wouldn’t—” “I would, baby. I would. If the choice is the mission or coming home to you, I’m coming home.”» — Chapter Seventeen.
«“There will always be another mission, Madi, but there won’t always be another you.”» — Chapter Seventeen.
«“When you have to choose death or coming home, I want you to come home.” “That’s really what you would choose?” “Yes, baby, always.”» — Chapter Seventeen.
«No amount of aspirin had helped, and I refused anything stronger. We were still in danger, and I might have had to fucking fly. Not that we had the helo anymore, but I was unwilling to risk it. The refusal to put anything in my body that might jeopardize the mission still a fierce instinct. The fact that the pulsating migraine was just as debilitating as pain medications seemed to have escaped me.» — Chapter Eighteen.
«“You should have come to me a long, long time ago, Luke.” I’d never had a dad like that. One who’d tell me when I’d fucked up, then give me advice to fix it. I swallowed another lump of guilt, “I know—” “Do you?” Damn, the man was in the mood to interrupt tonight. I glanced over at Theo who had an eyebrow raised. Sighed, “I do, now.” “Better late than never, I guess.”» — Chapter Twenty.
«“Luke, Madi kept a secret she knew would scare Theo, but by keeping it she just hurt him, right?” “Yeah,” I answered. Unsure where he was going with this. Theo wasn’t sure either, and he squirmed uncomfortably. Obvious distaste at being used as an example. “Look at Theo. Tell me, what’s worse? To be hurt or to be scared?” “Well,” I started, looking over at my friend trying to swallow his own tongue, “now that he knows, I think it’s both. When they happen together.” “Exactly,” I could picture Anderson nodding. “And he had to go through both, when he could have avoided one by just making her feel safe enough to be honest with him.”» — Chapter Twenty.
«“He’s crazy about you. Crazy being the operative word.” “I know,” she grinned, “Isn’t that great?”» — Chapter Twenty-Eight.
«“Madi, you wanna try to come back in here? It’s clear now, everyone’s free.” “No,” I heard Theo’s answer immediately in the comm. Then, “Yes,” as Madi’s voice was live again in my ear. “Baby,” Theo’s broken plea followed in my ear. “I can do it, Teddy,” I glanced up to see Madi’s shadow near the door. “It’s clear. Let me face the thing that scares me.” Fuck, I owed her and Chloe so much credit. Madi’s slow steps entered the room, darting around in fear and anxiety. Her tactical training taking the back burner to the stress she was feeling. Theo edged in behind her, one hand on her hip, the other on his rifle. His head moving in a much slower, much more analytical swivel. Checking the room to protect her.» — Chapter Thirty.
«“Max, shut up,” Madi groaned, emphasizing every little syllable, and adding a few extra, as she spoke. “I didn’t say anything that time,” I’m not proud of it, but my voice notched up an octave. “Your little finger tap, tap, tapping is real annoying.” No way she fucking heard that.» — Epilogue.
