Monday, May 22: Kreator, “Civilization Collapse”
Phantom Antichrist was generally well-regarded upon release, and it proved to be the midpoint in a rather remarkable creative run for Kreator: although Hordes of Chaos was a bit inconsistent, Mille Petrozza, Ventor and crew barely made a false move in the 20+ years since the hard reset of Violent Revolution.  And “Civilization Collapse” fell right within their sweet spot, working with precision and a strange catchiness while also hovering on the edge of chaos.  Petrozza’s frazzled croaking aptly conveyed the freakout he was aiming for, and overall this was Teutonic thrash of fairly high order. “Civilization Collapse” didn’t reinvent anything for Kreator, and in some respects was rather interchangeable relative to what they’d been doing for the last decade, but that spoke to how they maintained such a lengthy hot streak.

Tuesday, April 12: Kreator, “Escalation”
After Mille Petrozza reoriented Kreator back towards its roots on Violent Revolution, every subsequent album proved to be more successful than the last, and each one played a role in helping the band achieve new levels of popularity, to the point where they actually became bigger than they were during their well-regarded run on Noise Records.  This unlikely ascension- literally nobody was expecting Kreator of all bands to break through like this some 20 years after their inception- became apparent with Hordes of Chaos, which despite not being really any different from the preceding Enemy of God somehow gained more traction commercially, building on the underground success of its predecessor (which itself proved to be bigger than what came before).  So “Escalation” proved to be an apt title: even though the track wasn’t unique to the band’s 2000s discography, it was fully in their sweet spot, with Petrozza’s frazzled Muppet howling perfectly complementing his serrated riffs and Ventor’s precise yet relentless drumming.  There was really no reason for something like this to take hold the way it did, since there was nothing remotely groundbreaking or imaginative about it. But Kreator was so phenomenally good at what they did, and arguably nobody else was playing this kind of thrash at this level of confidence and power, so “Escalation” along with the rest of Hordes of Chaos seized its moment and continued elevating Kreator on the international stage.
