Techwear General’s fashion challenge this month was titled “Current Year.” Both Akira and Blade Runner take place in the year 2019, so the idea was to take inspiration from both of those films that looks like it would fit in there, could be worn in our actual world, and also retain some somewhat technical properties.

Fashion in Blade Runner-World consists of people who are wearing their best, or at least, the best things they have available to them. That means older things are very worn and obviously durable, newer things are cheaper and obviously synthetic. My idea for this challenge was to look like a random office worker that was headed home after a regular 16 hour day at work in the capitalism mines.

Everything I have on (except the shirt and tie) I wear normally. Though in the case of the pants I usually pinroll cuff them so they don't fit so wide in the leg, but wider fitting formal-ish pants were important for that kind of neo-noir look that the men in Blade Runner have. At first I thought of wearing the shirt untucked to give a real rumpled look, and I wasn't really a fan of the integrated belt in the pants, but I came around when I tucked it in and the built-in belt seemed like something natural to occur in Blade Runner.

The shirt and tie aren't technical at all, but I think they're essential to bring everything together. I wanted the tie to be a little rumpled, so we didn't steam it flat. The shirt is a little too big since when I bought it I weighed a lot more than I do now, but I think that also adds to making it look a little more lived-in.

The field jacket was a natural choice, since it's a durable item and anything that's lasted that long should get worn until it can't be worn any longer.

The SFB's were also a natural choice, since they're chunky and appear to be vaguely office appropriate when pants are hanging over them.

Things changed when I put the fishtail parka on, and the vibe shifted away from being an office worker to looking like a detective. While we were shooting, someone gave me a lollipop and I think it sort of finished the whole look and gave it a little depth of character. Like I'd quit smoking so I replaced cigarettes with lollipops to keep the oral fixation occupied.

Anyway this was super fun to do, as I’m normally self-shooting myself with a phone and tripod for these challenges. So going out and shooting was great and the pictures came out just as great.
