We've done where we were. You know where we went. But where are we going?
By the looks of what is happening around the world regarding women's rights progress has slowed.
Although everything stated up until this point has not been the best of news, here is some good news....
"Growing Say in Foreign Policy. An increasing number of countries are incorporating advancement of gender equality into their foreign policy establishment and agendas."
"Increasing Public Advocacy. Women have also used their greater political voice to shed new light on harassment, discrimination, and violence through social movements, such as #MeToo, India’s #IWillGoOut for the unhindered right to go out in public, and Latin America’s #NiUnaMenos, spotlighting violence against women, and through myriad marches, protests, and on-line campaigns."
"International Recognition of Women’s Issues. During the past 25 years, countries have come together at the UN to pass several landmark agreements that protect and empower women, including the Beijing Platform for Action in 1995 with the goal of achieving legal gender equality, UN Security Council resolution 1325 on “Women and Peace and Security” affirming women’s vital role in resolving conflicts and maintaining peace, and the UN Millennium Development Goals in 2000, which included “gender equality and empowerment of women and girls” as one of its tenets."

Something that was inspired my sisters efforts as she makes feminism a force to be reckoned with. I admit I didn't give it much thought which is well nigh a sin, me being a woman and all. But I do think I've been fighting all along, in my own way.

This isn't the feminism movement I enrolled for.
A Youtube channel tells me to stay #Unblushed when referred to as 'the bitch'. A columnist repeatedly explains how being called 'a slut' is my rite of passage to be a woman of the 21st century. A world leader hurls at me and my clan as 'nasty women'; to which a Hollywood celebrity through spokenword celebrates the goodness of being nasty. I am slurred at as 'Western' by an Indian politician for my reluctance to give-in to the made-up cultural norms. And, 'This pussy fights back' are the inspirational boards I seem to see everywhere these days.
What is it that all of you are trying to tell me?
Ought I be Okay when abused at as a Bitch, a Slut, a Nasty Woman? That, I should Smile & Let go when my vagina is called out as Pussy, because that is the "lady-like" manner to handle it?
NO.
NO. Shaming myself to tell the world that ‘I can take the shit thrown at me by my stride' isn't the Gracefulness I possess. My Father raised me to be strong yet gentle. And, from my Mother I have learnt to be a nurturer and a hellraiser. So here I am raising hell, gently.
I am NOT a Bitch. I am NOT a Slut. Do NOT label me as Nasty. My vagina is NOT a Pussy.
I am a Woman. A Magnificent one. A Powerful one. Neither Western nor Eastern. I am who I am. Dare Not put a bright side to the slurs and abuses through Empowerment porn. I shall Not take it. I am Not meant for it. Its Not how I am built.
I do not need labels to feel proud or good about myself. Nor shall I ever be in need of them “empowering” slurs to feel more of a woman. This isn't the feminism movement I enrolled for. I am an Equalist. I am a Humanist. I am a Feminist. But, this isn't the feminism movement I enrolled for.

Women around India march in protest against the recent cases of mass molestation in Bangalore. Women celebrating New Year's eve were harrased and molested by the men present, owing to the fact that "they were wearing short dresses" and were "out late at night" This is not the only case to have emerged in recent years where men have thrown around such bullshit excuses for denigrating women and raping or sexually molesting them. Infact, women's safety is a HUGE problem in India. Men like to say that its our fault, so do the elders. Fuck them. #illGoOut

It’s a Violation of Human Rights Issue 🪧 Street Harassment is one the forms of sexual harassment and assault. Every woman deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Women should feel comfortable and safe in public places or streets without the fear of being chased and harassed.
Examples of street harassment: 🪧 ⇾ Catcalls ⇾ Sexually explicit comments ⇾ Sexist or homophobic remarks ⇾ Flashing ⇾ Assault
What does U.N. Commission say about the status of Women?
"The Commission expresses deep concern about violence against women and girls in public spaces, including sexual harassment, especially when it is being used to intimidate women and girls who are exercising any of their human rights and fundamental freedoms."

Two months ago, I decided to challenge myself out of my 9-6 routine life, and enrolled myself in a trip up north where all the travellers would be girls. I don't know how to put the joy of roaming around all over Hunza-Khunjerab-Mansehra-Naran with 18 other girls, in words. We trekked toFairy Meadows and Beyal Camp-- it was such a view! In Hunza, the highlight was staying with local families and eating Arzuk, a homemade bread, and jamming with the music students of Bulbulik music school all night long. The youngest among the musical gathering was only 13 years old, and the oldest 60 -- I felt our hearts young and fresh like never before. The people we met were susprised to see us on an all-girls trip, but were also supportive. It was so empowering, yaar. We claimed the streets and our space. And now when I'm back to Karachi, I have no words to describe how terribly I miss that freedom and clean fresh air filling my lungs. How I want to run away and sit on those jeeps and drink water from the springs, climb trees and eat apricots from them, have a tea on the roadside without anyone staring at me as if I'm committing a sin. I lived my life to the fullest in these 12 days at home away from home. ~Sakina Hassan #GirlsOnTheRoad #WhyLoiter #submission #IWillGoOut
