Da rules
I go by Monst and I guess I’m writing again: I do read faster than I write so enjoy all the reblogs lol
I like the color orange it's not relevant, just thought I'd put it out there
Uh the bnha master list is definitely not up to date and needs a revamp (I will probably get to that eventually, someday...soon...) Speaking of it Here's the DC one
Here's the BHNA one.
Here's the Kinktober2024 one
Anyways if you're interested below is basically the what's what. Stick around if you want.
Okay cool! Let’s get to it:
All characters for nsfw stuff are aged up 18+ (If you’re one of those (Can't separate reality from fiction/fantasy) then the unfollow/block buttons haven’t moved from their location and you are free to use them at your discretion )
If you're a minor while I can't stop you from reading I will block you if I catch you interacting with any of my 18+ content posts. As a matter of fact for my peace of mind and your safety I would prefer you didn't reblog/comment on my sfw stuff too, they're are dangerous people on the internet so please understand and don't take it personally-Thanks💕
Moving on-
I’m cool with:
Requests- Hcs, Scenarios, thirst posts, Ya sending ideas and recommendations👀
For requests I might not get to all of them in a timely manner and I might not do some I’m not feeling. I write for F. Reader, GN. reader and M. Reader. Ships are cool too so you can request Character x character or poly reader- character x character x reader.-Genre: all of them tbh
I’m okay with dark content- (Dubcon, noncon, yandere, somno, etc.) and everything should be labeled appropriately. You can always ask that I tag something if it is missing. I do like a challenge/learning so even if I'm not personally into something I'll definitely give it a whirl (Kinks and or tropes)
Sfw- Fluff, angst basically anything that tickles my fancy and isn't risque or full on smut.
* In regards to requests the things I do fuck w might be prioritized 👉👈
I’m not cool with:
Scat
Underage/PDF
I'm generally cool w being uncomfortable, especially in regards to what I read or write whether it be by being grossed out or scared. I've always been ridiculously curious mostly to my determent but fiction is a safe way to explore shit so I'll give most things a fair shake in other words the sky's the limit but use your discernment⁉️
Extra:
Random shit- You telling me about your day, thoughts, opinions on whatever ig. ask for advice (trust me bro I got you✌️) or info dump👀 I love to chat.
Music! Tell me what your listening too! (Yes I'm one of those 'I listen to everything' I need new stuff to listen to)
Also! I miss the whole deviant art/Quizzilla shit so I might do a whole seven minutes in heaven thing lmao (This doesn’t belong here but scream at me about it cause I need it to happen for nostalgia’s sake)
Also, I'm kinda using this space as a chill/fun mostly nsfw diary? lmao so it's just mostly gonna be vibes :p That being said keep your fandom discourse and weirdo hate bs to yourself cause I will clown/ignore you if you come at me w some sideways ass energy. I'm just as nice as I am mean so don't try me ☯️❤️
So here’s the fandoms&Characters if you wanna request:
Mha-
Shocker, but I do have some old asks that are too good to just let’em go ya know?
Shinsou (I started this blog cause of him so.. yeah)
Villain/Yandere Deku sorry
Bakugou
Endeavour
Dabi
Hawks
Tokoyami
Shoto
Dc-
Please, please, please send me shit about Tim Drake. (Need him biblically) Literally hopped back on for him.
Jason Todd

Bruce Wayne
Selina Kyle
Poison Ivy
Joker (Nothing good is coming out of anyone requesting this I just know it)
Constantine
Diana (Wonder woman my beloved)

The letters are there when I get home from school one Friday. Three of them among a pile, innocuous white envelopes with my name printed behind the little plastic window. I snatch them from the floor as Ivy squeezes past me into the hallway and dumps her school bag right by the stairs.
“Hey,” I scold her absently, “bring your bag into the kitchen and finish your homework.” I turn the little stack in my hands, running my thumb over a logo in the corner of the top one, in case it’s a trick of the light, something I can brush away, but it’s real. From Amsterdam University of the Arts.
“I finished it at Ella’s house.”
I flip to another. Paris College of Art.
“You didn’t, Trisha told me you still have to finish that thing about… um…”
The third, Berlin University of the Arts.
My stomach does a flip.
Ivy heaves out the jaded sigh of an eighty year old and drags her feet back to her school bag, “It’s just a stupid thing, it will take five minutes.”
“Well then take five minutes, I’m going to go upstairs for a minute, and, um,” It’s hard to talk to my sister when I feel as though these envelopes are burning through my palm, “When I come back down you have to be done because we’ll need to go out.”
“Out?”
“Yeah,” I’m already halfway up the stairs, “I’ll tell you in a second.”
I boot the door shut behind me and tear into the letters like a starving beast. All restraint is gone now as pieces of the envelopes fly across the wrinkled sheets of my bed.
I seize the first one in a frenzy, Amsterdam. I impatiently skip the blocks of text to get to the good stuff.
....has approved your application...
I toss it aside.
Paris.
...of your acceptance to our art program...
Berlin.
...our great pleasure to notify you officially of your admission...
My hands are trembling, and with a steadying breath I force myself to slow down and read it this time.
Dear Jude Turner, It is our great pleasure to notify you officially of your admission to Berlin university of the Arts for the Autumn semester of 2010. We thank you for having chosen our program, and we are confident that you will have a wonderful experience in Germany’s dynamic capital city. Please read this letter carefully; it contains vital information on your course and housing placements! Information on payment procedures and schedules compiled for you in-
Okay, boring. I fold it up and shove it, along with the other two letters, into my blazer pocket and spring to attention. Do I need anything? I don’t think so. I burst into the hallway and down the stairs, through to the kitchen where Ivy looks up from her homework in alarm as I rifle through the kitchen cupboards.
“What are you doing?”
“Just getting something,” I shove a bag of pasta out of the way and seize the jumbo bar of chocolate stashed in the back.
“What? We have chocolate?”
“Yeah but not for you.”
“You hide it from me?”
“Yeah I’m supposed to. Come on, have you finished your thing?”
“No.”
“Who cares, let’s go.”
I grab her hand and lead her out of the kitchen and down the hallway where I undo the latch and put her standing outside while I lock up.
She looks stunned, “Don’t I need a jacket?”
I glance up at the ominous grey clouds moving in over the sea, “No, I think it’s fine. Come on.”

Season 2, Episode 8: the Stockholm Syndrome Caper
Liveblog for @csweekly
I’m so normal about this episode.
WE MADE IT TO THE ANGST. My serotonin is on full blast right now. I apologize right off the bat I might be so taken with this episode that I may not pull together all of my thoughts. This is the episode that made me go from “oh this is a fun iteration of CS!” To me sitting up wide eyed and going “the French Connection Caper was not a one off you have my full undivided attention CS 2019”
Since we are on my favorite episode, I want to stop at the title sequence for a moment and point out one of my favorite things I forgot to mention in week 1. It’s so neat that on the title card with the silhouette of Carmen with her voice actor credit, that she literally tips her hat to Player when they show his credits. Bestie moment, and homage to all of the players that came before this one.
Maelstrom is Done 24/7. He just wants to be evil and they have to make such mundane decisions such as MOVING and blowing up their current home 😕 I love how fierce Brunt and Cleo are about staying they are the definition of stubborn in the looks on their faces. Bellum doesn’t care she’s got a state of the art facility in the Himalayas.
Okay but Bellum is right about relocation being invigorating. After a change of scenery I’m always reinvigorated to write fic.
“Only a matter of time before invading forces come rowing to our shore” knowing what Devineaux is about to do makes this so funny.
Look at Julia being assertive at the beginning here! The Fashionista caper really gave her the confidence she needed after what happened at the end of s1. It…stings knowing how quickly it’s about to go down the drain.
Love that Chief’s obsession with catching VILE is her early downfall. Her single mindedness prevents her from patience and seeing the whole picture as Julia suggests. It’s her undoing in the s2 finale.
The way Carmen shows up at the perfect time. And she is NOT pleased.
“Those suits” the way Ivy is so smug about leading ACME on when she literally joins them at the very end. May you and Zack never change.
Okay, so Zack says that this is Carmen’s actual coat? This means that Zack and Ivy have their own haha. And I really love how Ivy responds “little tight in the shoulders, but powerful” please the way Ivy looks up to Carmen literally slays me.
Zack: does a bad imitation of Player info dumping
Player: laughs dryly, rolls his eyes, and then proceeds to do said info dump
Me: this will never get old
Honestly, it’s stated so many times that Player chats with the sibs during capers almost as much as Carmen. If this conversation is any indication, I’d have loved more. Just to hear how they fill the time. Talking about software and hardware updates for red drone maybe? Where are the forbidden video game nights?
“That’s a ton of bridges for trolls to hide under!” The best troll comes in s3.
Also good time to point out that the geography brief in every episode foreshadows future events and dialogue in the episode.
Lol Carmen has the pen. Also! She learns Chief’s name!
I love Julia this entire scene. She’s trying to be SO coy, playing to what she remembers of Carmen, that is a confident and witty thief, with her own wit and lighthearted banter. It’s the first time she’s had an opportunity to speak with Carmen sorta on her own terms with enough information. But Carmen for once isn’t having it because of the nature of this particular caper. It’s like, one of the few times Carmen is not excited about a caper. For good reason considering they’re NUCLEAR LAUNCH CODES. This screams Dr Bellum, though I see Maelstrom enjoying the psychological power play that he could work with, once again coming in clutch for heists that endanger literally everyone on the planet. Go big or go home.
And then Chief spoils everything. Again. And it’s literally right after Julia says trust me. I think she and Devineaux both have bad luck, but in different ways. Neither can catch a break when it comes to Carmen. The difference is that Julia can’t control hers where Chase’s is one of his own making.
The move Carmen pulls off the wall and over the agent and the agent knocks themselves out with their own gas. One of my favorites.
Zari right at the top, coolly giving Carmen a dose. *chefs kiss* revenge for Milan. Zari as an agent character is so cool.
It begins it begins it begins IT BEGINS. Carmen is drowsy and Cornered at the top of the bell tower. The PERSPECTIVE from Carmen, showing how heavy her eyes are, jumping from scene to scene as she takes each desperate step. That’s the kind of imagery writers dream of.
PLAYER’S MUDDLED and INCREASINGLY concerned voice from Carmen’s perspective. She can’t concentrate on anything.
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 2 (gassed/falling unconscious and chased/“betrayed”)
Player: 1
The way Ivy invites trouble by staying in character is delightful. Do it again.
Moose Boy and Otter Man are such underrated VILE operatives. TASER
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 2
Player: 1
Ivy: 2 (tased and kidnapped)
MORE ANGRY JULIA. You tell her.
Carmen unconscious in the snow.
THE SCENE
Quite possibly my favorite scene in the whole show.
“But if Carm’s MIA, too, who do I support?”
***Anguished silence***
“Go get your sister, Red knows how to fend for herself in a pickle”
This scene kills me so much. Player speaks with confidence and sureness but that brief silence and anguish on his face tells us all we need to know about his feelings. He lost his best friend for a whole semester while she was Black Sheep having to retake her classes. And now he’s faced with potentially losing her for good. He knows how serious the situation is. He knows she’s probably unconscious in the cold and he’s sitting at home in his room in front of the computer instead of being there physically. He could have told Zack to go after Carmen, but he knows he can’t. Ivy is the most important person in the world to Zack. And of the two, Carmen has the better chance of rescuing herself. He knows what decision he needs to make, but he can be sad about it. He takes the guilt and gives Zack his marching orders quickly and confidently, so that he can’t question Player’s pause or true feelings. Player, who has been ultra protective of Carmen since she left VILE island, is faced with the prospect that he might have failed her.
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 3
Player: 2
Ivy: 2
Zack: 1
The shot of Carmen banged up and lying in the snow unconscious. Super dangerous. Super amazing shot. The pen is intact but the communicator that was in her ear isn’t. So. Possible head injury/concussion then if she landed head first.
First thing she does is reach out to Player for help. 😭 “it isn’t getting any warmer” disconnected from her friends, cold, injured.
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 6
Player: 2
Ivy: 2
Zack: 1
This entire scene with Ivy is great. She really comes in clutch despite her situation. She’s cold and tied up and found out exactly what VILE is about to sell. And she is rightfully terrified.
She’s so clever though to figure out exactly how to manipulate Moose Boy and Otter Man both! And tease them! Either these two are fresh from VILE academy or they never hung out in the commons. This scene is simultaneously a comedy and so serious. Otter Man thinks he’s so smart but Ivy has him completely fooled. Where Moose Boy simply takes orders he’s willing to take Ivy at face value. It’s amazing to watch.
Also Ottoman LOL nicely done Ivy. "Sweden's coolest resort” idk Ivy, you kinda SOUND like Carmen. And very quick thinking to ask for the coat! Ivy knows the tools are there she made (assumingly) all of them.
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 6
Player: 2
Ivy: 4
Zack: 1
Carmen. Almost makes it to the top. : D and falls! :D immaculate. Counting that as two because not only is there the angst of almost making it, she adds to her injuries with the fall.
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 8
Player: 2
Ivy: 4
Zack: 1
And the geography brief comes in handy. Ivy uses the knowledge that Player gave her to earn rapport with Moose Boy. The great part about Otter Man is that he’s so focused on stopping Moose Boy from spilling the means, that he doesn’t realize that he can use that as his advantage. He’s basically confirming everything right now. But what if he were to give Ivy a lie? Then she’d be wondering which is true. It’s a great VILE character flaw. Otter Man does not see Moose Boy as a partner, just a lackey. They’d be terrifying otherwise.
Carmen realizing her choices are get arrrested or die. “Either way, VILE wins”. Absolutely screaming I love this stuff.
The horror on Ivy’s face when she finds out what the data crystal holds. Excellent dramatic effect.
LOL the chair does NOTHING
Literally ivy through the show:
Ivy: Carmen would do this.
Also Ivy: I am terrified
Also also Ivy: it’s the right thing to do *does the thing*
I love her for it so much.
The cool thing about Ivy’s part here is that she does it all her way. She took notes from Carmen but she ultimately succeeded because she’s herself!
Cool donning the red montage. Immediately slips and falls. Ivy ily
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 8
Player: 2
Ivy: 5
Zack: 1
Dgfggg the resigned and heartbroken look on Carmen’s face as she activates the pen. And she’s back in character as soon as Chief pops up.
Interesting to note that Chief must have reflected on Julia’s anger, because she is far softer on Carmen here than i expected the first time I watched this episode. Yes she’s professional, but she attempts a half hearted apology, which eventually devolves into genuine worry. Maybe it’s the cynic in me, but I wonder how much of that is caring about Carmen as a young person in trouble, or Chief’s ticket to finally catching VILE.
On Carmen’s side. It is interesting that she doesn’t trust ACME can take on VILE. I wonder how much of that is knowing Roundabout exists and just plain not trusting them to do it right after all the attempts to capture her. And then of course how much of it is Carmen putting it on her shoulders as her personal responsibility. Because it is telling that Carmen gives Chief the NASTIEST look when she points out that it need not be Carmen’s burden alone. She’s not even as angry at being chased that Chief is actually apologizing for.
In any case, Carmen waits until the last possible moment to contact Chief. Not only does it show her stubbornness and how much she values her freedom, but just how aware of her own body she is. She has just enough time to get information from Chief about how close they are to finding her…and then she can’t anymore. As soon as she knows they are coming, she gives out. Carmen plays her intel close, knowing now that’s her bargaining chip to stay alive, even if it’s in prison.
VULNERABILITY. : D in front of a not-ally (yet) Carmen can’t hold on she drops to the snow. And again it’s a bit hard to tell if Chief is legitimately concerned about Carmen or just the intel she has, but staying with her, talking to her, until help arrives most likely saved her life.
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 10
Ivy: 4
Player: 2
Zack: 1
That bartender is totally watching Ivy fall and not reacting at all like it’s a daily occurrence for guests to do that.
IVY DUBBING THE SALE PLEASE YOU ARE ALREADY PERFECT IVY you DID NOT have to go so hard so EASILY
LOL the lady just scoots away as Ivy crashes into the back of the chair 😂😂😂😂
SHE MISSED. And Carmen would be proud she covers it up.
Ivy has such a keen eye! She finds that data crystal so quickly. I think it’s because she’s used to working on small parts, like Carmen’s gadgets, and also the literal car she built from scratch.
Ivy: I need to summon courage
Ivy: SCREAMS as she does the thing
Moose is so great. The second Otter needs him he stops struggling and is like “okay I’ll just take the infrastructure with me”
“This is not what Carmen would do!” You’re right. It’s not. And for all you know, that’s why the caper succeeded. Because Ivy did it Ivy’s way.
And because Player told Zack to get his sister, he’s right there to pick her up and get away so she isn’t recaptured.
THE SIBLING HUG. One of the greatest scenes ever. Zack’s hopefulness and Ivy’s joy.
Ahhh and Zack is so focused he’s ready to go after Carmen. Look at Ivy’s increasingly horrified face. She had nO idea that Carmen was missing. The GUILT as she’s about to find out is so delicious
Angst/Whump Tally:
Carmen: 10
Player: 2
Ivy: 6
Zack: 1
Fhghcb Carmen’s resigned and peaceful face as the helicopter finds her.😭
And you think the siblings get there just in time but no.
It takes 44 minutes to drive from the airport in the northern end of Stockholm to the forested area to the south with water on both sides. Carmen is probably fortunate she didn’t glide long enough to get to the ocean. So, from picking up Ivy, estimate 45 minutes to get to Carmen. Add in half that time for Zack to get from the city center to north Stockholm. That’s the fastest, not counting traffic. Carmen was unconscious and alone in the cold for perhaps a little over an hour, as the sun is going down. That is PLENTY of time to get severe frostbite not wearing appropriate clothing for the weather, as she does.
Zari please she’s down 😭
Carmen can barely speak let alone put on any defensive airs. She tries to sound angry but she’s clearly not well it doesn’t work. She’s steeling herself to never be happy again. And at this point, it’s very possible Roundabout can pull the strings and get her to VILE. Gets my hurt/comfort loving blood boiling.
And things turn for the better. That’s a lovely last look that Carmen has as she looks Julia’s way. It’s not hateful or angry, it’s very reflective. As if Carmen is realizing ‘okay, Julia was actually trying to help. There is some merit here. I understood why she did what she did. This was not her fault’ after Chief offers to let her go. It’s a far more peaceful look than Carmen had just a bit before.
Ivy wraps Carmen up in her coat and holds her to keep her warm and talk to her I’m emotional here’s the comfort part! She and Zack are so worried for her I’m eating it up.
“What, by who?”
Ivy’s tears and smile as she says “Carmen Sandiego who else”
Carmen does nothing this caper. She successfully leads ACME off of VILE I guess so that Ivy can work but that was NoT the plan. This episode is all character development for Carmen. Slowly opening her eyes that she CAN trust more people. Ivy and Zack (building off of their two parter), Julia, and maybe Chief. And this trend continues in s3 and s4. There are even more civilians of the day, and Carmen leans on their help more than in s1 and s2.
And Ivy is so sweet. She’s letting Carmen know that even if she wasn’t there, her team completed the caper. “What would Carmen do” was Ivy’s single motivation. And it saw her through. Carmen wasn’t on screen at the caper but her presence was felt. That’s my takeaway anyway. It’s building on the ‘anyone can be Carmen Sandiego’ message that the finale comes to.
Whump/Angst Tally:
Carmen: 12
Player: 2
Ivy: 6
Zack: 2
These are completely arbitrary numbers I’d love to see how you all scored it.
And the end with VILE announcing their decision. It’s a good thing they decided to burn the Academy, I don’t think Le Chevre would be comfortable in burning the goat lol. I love the lightning effects though! A good thunderstorm always makes the mood.
Such a good episode. Excited to follow up on the comfort part next episode.

Old pics(plus a sketch dump) for TT Kid
So as a kid I made a Robin x Starfire kid, I dunno why but I just did.(I say that cause I barely used him after making him) Years later he'd be converted into my & my friend's version of Jake Grayson.
I found the old pics recently & decided I'd show them with an attempt at context.
Here's the old pic of him, I don't remember what year I drew this but I want to guess middle school or early high school. I don't know why his civilian name is Alfred Robinson(extra b is a mistake), I think the context was for whatever reason I didn't know Robin's name was Dick Grayson. His name being Alfred is probably cause I had nothing better & I think he named him after Alfred cause at the very least I knew Robin was part of the batfamily.
That's kind of a weird thing to say as the only members I knew of the Batfamily were Bruce, Alfred, Robin(as in the one from 2003 Teen Titans), Ace the bathound & Terry(Batman Beyond), at some point I was made aware Batgirl existed. I had no idea at the time that there was more than one Robin after Robin became Nightwing.
Here is the other drawing of Nightfire this time with his parents in civilian clothes.(Dick has long hair cause Teen Titans 2003 Nightwing) Nightfire is talking about I think pranking Beast Boy for some reason.
The person next to Starfire is an OC that use to be named Ivyfire(I dunno why her name is Ivy) who is meant to be Blackfire's daughter that chose to join her aunt's side. I have no idea why I dressed them like this, I don't exactly understand fashion.
With that out of the way I thought I'd also show some sketches I drew back in November of 2022. Some characters have been redesigned since then but I thought I'd show this still.
Left to right
Top:
-My friend's OC Emma, Mar'i & Jake's older half sister as a baby
-My redesign of Ivyfire(her name has changed I'm just not saying it here)
-My redesign for Ivyfire for the 2003 version of Teen Titans
Bottom:
-Mar'i & Jake/redesigned Nightfire
-Older Mar'i/Nightstar & Jake/redesigned Nightfire in their hero outfits mean to be in the style of 2003 Teen Titans(not the art style but based on the designs some)

Angel for Earth by Angel of Earth
Chapter 3 - Apartment
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
One Week Earlier
"Knock, knock, Mamo-chan. I'm here." Usagi walked into Mamoru apartment.
"Hi, Usako." Mamoru was sitting at a desk in the living room typing.
"Whatcha doing?" She walks over to him and gives him a little kiss.
"I'm typing up an add for the paper. I need to get a room mate. The owner upped the rent again and that extra room's just going to waste."
"I don't want you to get a room mate! We wont get anymore time alone, and what if they find out your Tuxedo Mask?"
"I already checked around for other apartments. Do you know how hard it is to find a good apartment in Tokyo this time of year? As for the whole Tuxedo Mask thing, I'll just have to be careful. I have windows I can always jump out of." He took off his glasses and threw them on the table. "Writing this ad is harder than I thought."
Usagi walked behind him and started to rub his shoulders.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Present Day
"Move over, Ivy. Your hogging the bed. Why don't you turn into something small that doesn't take any space?" Terra rolled over on the bed, making more room for the dog.
The dog started turning into a glowing ball and started shrinking; the glow soon faded and there sat a small silver cat with the earth symbol on it head.
"There, is that better, Terri?"
"Perfect." Terra spread the newspaper out on the bed, "We have to find an apartment. I can't believe how many rat and roach infested places there are around here. And everything is so expensive."
"Why don't you just ask them to leave?"
"Because the place was such a dump to begin with. Besides I don't want to have to ask them to leave just because I want to live there. I don't want to make them lose their homes. Hey, here's one, but their looking for a room mate. Ivy, how do you feel about moving in with someone? It'll mean you can't talk as much."
"I don't care. The sooner we get out of this hotel the better."
~*~*~*~
Terra walks up to the door and knocks. A guy, about seventeen, with midnight black hair and dark blue eyes answers.
"Hi, my names Terra Rose Childs, and I'm here about the ad in the paper."
"Come on in. My name is Mamoru Chiba."
"I just got this feeling. Have we met before?"
"That's funny. I just got the same feeling. I don't think we've met."
They sat on the couch.
"Why don't you tell me a little about yourself."
"Well, I'm originally from Tokyo, but moved to the U.S. when I was four."
"How old are you?"
"I'm 15, almost 16, and in tenth grade. I'm going to Crossroads High."
"What about your family?"
"My adopted parents are back in the U.S. I'm here on an exchange program. The family I was suppose to be staying with had to back out last minute so I've been living in a hotel."
"What about activities?"
"I haven't had time to join anything yet, but it all depends on the season. I want to be part of the volleyball team, swim team, and softball team. For clubs I'm hoping to join the art club, cooking club, nature club and a community service club, if there is one. I also take part in the school plays. Outside of school activities I like to hike, bike, skate. I have a part time job up at the stables where I give ridding lessons and help take care of the animals."
Man, she's one busy girl. That will be good for Tuxedo Mask. And she seems so familiar, like I've know her all my life. Mamoru set his cup of coffee down then asked Terra a few more question before telling her about him.
They talked for hours. It seemed like they were best friends and had know each other forever. After a while Mamoru showed Terra around the apartment.
"You can have the room if you want it, that is if you can put up with me."
"Sure I would love to have the room. Oh, by the way, can I have a cat? She's house broken and doesn't make a mess."
"Sure. My girlfriend is over here all the time and always brings her cat." What Mamoru actually meant was that the cat tagged along to watch them, but he wasn't about to say that out loud.
"When can I move in?"
~*~*~*~
Two days later Terra moved most of her stuff into the apartment and spent the whole day working on her room. It drove Mamoru nuts trying to figure out what was going on in there because she kept the door shut.
The walls were sponged a silvery purple. A water bed sat up against the wall in a corner with a hope chest at the end and a night stand with a lamp sat next to the head of the bed.
In front of one window was a desk with a computer, and in one corner sat a stereo system with a cd rack full of different kinds of cds. An easel sat in front of another window with some canvas. Plants were all over the room, some even climbing up the walls and ceilings and pots of white roses were near the bed.
A white dresser sat near the walk-in closet. Pictures of far away places were on the walls and ceramic mystical creatures sat on things in the room.
"So what do you think, Mamoru-chan? It's almost all done."
"Looks like it took a lot of work, Terri-chan."
There was a knock at the door. Mamoru opened it and there stood a delivery guy.
"I have a delivery for Terra Rose Childs."
"That's me."
"Sign here, please." the delivery guy holds out a board and Terra signs. "Its downstairs we'll just have to unload it."
Terra runs downstairs to the delivery truck with Mamoru and the man in tow. "It's here! It's finally here!" she turns to the delivery guy with a deadly face and red eyes, "If its scratched, chipped, or broken I will make sure you pay. I'll make you wish were never born."
The delivery man looks pale, "Yes, miss."
The other delivery men start to wheel out a object that is covered with a tarp.
"It's here, it's here."
"Terri-chan, calm down. What can be so important?" Mamoru looks down into Terra's eyes and got a shock. Bright yellow eyes almost impossible to look at, "Hey Terri-chan your eyes are yellow. I could have sworn they were dark blue."
"Oh they are. My eyes change color usually when I get big waves of emotions. When there yellow I'm hyper, dark blue is calm, black is depression, red is anger, purple is love, dark green is when I'm jealous, and emerald green is when I have a urge to garden, ice blue is when I'm in kind of a cold mood, brown comes when I'm in between emotions and orange is kind-of-hyper, but mean mood. Usually my eyes are dark blue because its a family color, but my eyes only change with emotions that are very strong. My mother's eyes changed too."
Terra turned to the object and tore off the tarp to reveal a black Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Mamoru's mouth dropped open at the beauty of it.
She hugged it then started to inspect it for scratches. "All in one peace."
"You can drive?"
"Yeah. I was allowed to get my license early, because I was leaving for Japan and I only have a few more months until I'm sixteen.
"When is your birthday?"
"April 30th. I'm a Taurus, one of the signs most connected to the Earth."
~~~~~~~~~~~A Couple Hours Later~~~~~~~~~~~
KNOCK KNOCK
Terra answers the door.
"TERRA ROSE WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?" screamed Usagi
"I live here, Usagi-chan. So you must be the Usako that Mo-chan's been talking about." Terra moved out of the way for the steaming bunny. "He's in watching TV."
Usagi walked past Terra and into the living room where Mamoru was on the couch with a small silver kitten.
"I'll let you too talk, I'm going out for milk. I'll be back in half an hour." Terra grabbed her car keys and walked out the door."
"You didn't tell me that your room mate was a girl!"
"Usako, calm down, Terra is only a friend. She's like a little sister. Usagi you should trust me."
"You're right. I should trust you two. I just can't help rushing to conclusions sometimes. Terra and I have been really close these last two weeks and she seems like a sister to me, too.
"Your getting so mature, my Usako. I love you."
"I love you too, Mamo-chan." Usagi leaned up and kissed him.
The cat looked kind of annoyed and left room, going back into Terra's room.
"When did you get a cat?"
"I didn't. She's Terra's and her name is Ivy."
They started kissing again. The kisses started going deeper when the communicator started going off.
"Not again." groaned Mamoru.
~*~*~*~
"I am Sailor Moon!"
"And we're the Sailor Senshi," chimed in the rest of the senshi.
"And on behalf of the Moon we shall punish you.!
"Mars Fire Balls Charge!" Mars launched her fire ball at a water youma. "It's time for you to become vapor."
The youma easily dodged the attack.
Mercury was typing away on her mini computer trying to find the youma's weakness.
Jupiter was throwing thunder and Tuxedo Mask was throwing roses at the youma, but neither could seem to hit it.
Venus threw her love chain and smacked the youma in the face.
The youma started to shoot out random blast of high water pressure and hit both Chibi Moon and Sailor Moon.
The youma was just about to shoot hot water at the two when a small white rose landed in the mouth of the youma, plugging up its hole.
The senshi gasped and looked up at where the rose had come from.
In a tree stood Sailor Earth. "I'm the Earth's Guardian. I was chosen by Mother Earth to protect the small, and the life on this planet. You can't come in here and try to take over. I'm Sailor Earth. And you're going to pay for attacking my planet."
The youma tore the rose out of it's mouth. "You think you can destroy the Black Rose, little one? You can't! We are stronger than what we once were. You might have gotten rid of us once, but now we're back and stronger than ever!"
"The Black Rose is going down." Sailor Earth started her new attack. "LIFE SEED..."
A small shape of energy appeared in her hand, a gust of wind blew at her back. It blew her hair forward, but left the mask on. The wind also picked up the seed and then dived down right when it got to the youma. The seed fell on the ground.
The youma looked at it and started laughing. "Is that all you got, little girl?"
"DRAIN!" Sailor Earth whispered the last word.
Vines exploded out of the seed and wrapped themselves around the youma. The green vines started to glow and they began to suck the energy out of the youma.
The youma began to scream and shrink and shrivel, until it was nothing but a small dried up corpse.
"Return!"
The vines began to pull back into the seed. The seed was now the size of a baseball. It floated up off the ground and then landed in the palm of Sailor Earth.
A strong wind blew through the park again and hit the corpse turning it to dust.
Sailor Moon was the first to speak. "Who are you? What is your mission."
"I am Sailor Earth and my mission is to find the Princess, and protect her and find the Sailor Elements. At the same time I must protect the Earth."
"What princess are you looking for? The Moon Princess? Because if you are we already found her."
"I'm not looking for the Moon Princess."
"What did the youma mean by Black Rose, and you tried to get rid of it once?"
"It doesn't matter. You best stay out of this or you will get hurt."
"We protect the Earth too! Why don't you join us? Maybe we could help you."
"I won't join you. Nobody asked you to protect this planet, but since you did, you have my thanks. You couldn't help me."
"Sailor Earth, come along now." a large black lab with an earth symbol on its head appeared.
"This is my guardian, Ivy, and you better stay out of our way. I don't want to have to hurt you just for being in the way, but I will."
A white mist surrounded the senshi again and when it had lifted the girl and dog were gone.
~*~*~*~
Terra Rose walked into the arcade. "Hi Motoki. How are you today?"
"Oh hi, Terra. I'm fine. I wanted to talk to you more the other day, but I figured with all the girls there I couldn't get close."
She felt fluttery, like she could soar a million feet off the ground. Rosie girl, stop it. Remember what happened with the last guy? She felt tears sting her eyes but held back.
"Its really weird, Terra, but have we met before? I feel as if I've meet you before. Only I can't place it."
"Well I use to live in Japan, but I moved away when I was four."
Suddenly it hit him were he had meet Terra before. "Angel?" "OH MY WORD! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"
She screamed and threw her arms around him.
THOUGHTS WHILE WATCHING GILMORE GIRLS: SEASON 3, EPISODE 3-“Application Anxiety" (Part 2)
bint. / (bɪnt) / noun. offensive, slang a derogatory term for girl, woman.
According to Mr. College Admissions Dork, the following fatal errors will guarantee your REJECTION! From Harvard. Bad handwriting (how quaint) Your chosen after school activities are considered boring to Mr.Dork. You don't have enough after school activities. Not enough means you're not trying hard enough. You take too many after school activities. Too many means you're trying too hard. As per Mr. Dork, nobody is interested in everything, and if you like too many things you will be !REJECTED! You submitted your application too early. You are a hopeless idiot if you believed the myth of "Early Admission". Ha ha! Dumb idiot kids! You're too intense. Hyper intense students will FAIL their admission interview! Mr. Dork along with his cohort, Mrs Dork, the delightful rays of sunshine they are, seem to find great joy in publicly dragging their own future students, mocking children who dare to dream of Ivy League admission and cover their walls in university paraphernalia, calling them "hungry and immature". These people are assholes. I think Season 1 Spitfire Rory would have pushed these admission dorks right off the stage. QUIPPY! Rory is wetting her pants and Paris is twitching. Let's flash back to early season 2, where Rory was contemplating some potential after school activities. *sparkly flashback music*
The extra cirricular/summer school options visible behind Rory were: Junior life saving, rock climbing, botany, contemporary art, hiking, loom weaving, local geology, role playing (????), field hockey, and Shakespeare. Harvard will be jumping to accept the applicant with a strong Role Playing/Loom Weaving background. I guess the Asshole is technically not wrong that the school newspaper seems passe* with those options available.
The Dot-Com Bust. How quaint. I'm old enough to remember hearing about it at the time (I was still a teenager) but thanks to GG I decided to do a little research on the topic and learned more about it. Thanks Emily!
The notion that college=guaranteed success? How quaint. And Rory majoring in journalism is the cherry on top of the Quaint Jello. It's okay, she couldn't know. The brutal and hilarious truth is that Jess (who didn't finish high school but is already a published author and running his own business by 21) and Dean (who ended up working in construction, which tends to pay very well) were more succesful than Rory with her Yale education in the end. In fact, Rory had the nerve to needle Dean in S4 about his construction job when she has an Ivy League education but won't even take a job waiting tables. Hell, it's even implied that Luke is sitting on a lot of money and he didn't go to college (although maybe not the best example, as that might have been an inheritance, I can't remember if it was ever discussed in detail). Hell, pretty much everyone in Stars Hollow didn't go to college and they seem very happy with their little working class lives. And if Jess didn't dismember Shane and dump her body in the lake she'd have made a good living as a hairstylist or makeup artist. In a later episode this season, Lorelai turns up her nose at the thought of Rory not going to the most elite college and implies that beauty school and community college are beneath Rory. But lemme save that special rant for when that episode comes along. However, in a few moments, Lorelai does tell Rory, "You HAVE to go to college." I get it, okay. I get what she's doing. She wants Rory to reach for the stars and do better in life than she did, get a good education etc etc. But this notion that attendance at an elite college as the only possible means to achieve success and anything less is just short of failure feels short sighted. Emily continues: the competition is fierce for admission, every student takes honors classes and works on the student council, a high GPA is not enough anymore, Rory needs to do something to stand out, extra cirriculars, etc, etc, we know, we know. Emily: Now even celebrities are going to college. I was watching that insipid Kate Hudson and even she talked about going to college. She's going to get in over Rory! Kate Hudson must have been a big deal in the early 2000s (I vaguely remember it) because they reference her a lot. Almost Famous came out in 2000 and How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days came out in 2003 and she made 11 movies total between 2000-2004. So that tracks. Back on her home planet, AmyShermanPalladino must have picked up an Earth People magazine and read about how Kate Hudson was popular with Earthlings. Really funny that Emily is more aware of current pop culture than any character under 35. Lorelai's still over here spouting references to Yo Yo and Dingus from 1973 or whatever. Lorelai: Don't worry about it Mom, Rory's special, she'll get in to Harvard. Emily: Of course Rory's special. She knows that, I know that, you know that, we all know that. Years of that "Rory's a special snowflake who can do no wrong" talk is definitely not going to have adult Rory up to her eyeballs in therapy bills. Rory shows up at Emily's and Lorelai, Rory, and Paris (on the phone) proceed to have a three way simultaneous Nuclear Panic Attack over the Harvard applications. The next morning at the Gilmore abode, Lane is visting and fielding phone calls about her rock band personal ad. Still no Rygalski.
If that's what you want.
A SMALL CHILD IN STARS HOLLOW! HOW DID IT BREACH CONTAINMENT!
This dapper gentleman addresses Luke as "Sir" , orders an "Egg cream" and offers to pay for his meal (so he's definitely an outsider). Another child and then a manchild (Kirk) followup with requests for other malt-shop items that nobody has ever ordered outside of a 1950's Archie comic. ,... Waaaaait a minuuuute. I know what's happening. These children are Taylor's operatives sent to scope out Luke's Diner. The "Taylor Opens an Ice Cream Parlor Next Door" plot will soon have liftoff.
Between telling a small child to go to hell and insulting Dean to his face for no other reason than he felt like it, I could not love Luke more in this episode.
Things googled while watching gilmore girls: *Passe (I definitely think I used this word incorrectly). Bint Common extra cirricular activities Dot com bubble burst Kate Hudson IMDB How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days Almost Famous
This is a short story that I put in my school’s literary magazine, titled “Kira’s Dream”, and I figured I’d dump it here. It’s a snippet from one of my WIPs, working title Hiraeth. It’s about a hardened woman in a post-Apocalyptic world becoming the caretaker to an eleven-year-old girl with amnesia— whose only remaining memories are scarily reminiscent of a time long, long before her own.
Fluorescent lights, white walls, brunette woman with big, round glasses.
Running. I was running through the spotless white halls, the tile floor squeaking under my feet. The florescent light was almost blinding, the light flickering. At the end of the hallway, stood the brunette woman with big, circular glasses. I ran into her arms.
I woke up.
Dang it.
I tried, desperately, to hold onto the dream. I couldn't let it slip away. Not something like this. I repeated the details over and over again in my head, as to not let them fade away.
Fluorescent lights, white walls, brunette woman with big, round glasses.
Florescent lights, white walls, woman with round glasses.
Florescent lights, white walls, woman... what did the woman look like again? Was her hair blonde, ginger, black? What shape were her glasses? I could have sworn they were square...
...
...
...
Who was I running to?
I smacked my head. The dream was gone. I had forgotten it. Again.
Forgetting. It seemed it was all I was good at. Some days ago, Artemis (or Art, as I called her) found me encased in some sort of vessel. I had no recollection of my past, nor who my parents were, nor where I came from. Art helped, albeit reluctantly; she clothed me, fed me, taught me the ways of the world I had awoken into. But she couldn’t help me get my memories back.
I sat up, scrubbed my face. The sun was just rising over the horizon, bathing the landscape in a dusty yellow hue. It poured through the large, broken window of the abandoned building we had taken shelter in. I looked over at Art, who was sprawled out on the open floor, her tanned, scarred skin slowly illuminating under the early morning light. She only had one sleeping bag in her possession, which she had given to me, so she had to use her backpack as a pillow and her jacket a blanket. It didn’t look all that comfortable, but she was snoring, so she must have been in a deep sleep regardless.
Art treated me kindly, but I think she really only tolerated me. Perhaps because she pitied me, or felt some sense of responsibility after having found me. But that would soon change. Yesterday, she told me she was bringing me to a commune (one of the few semblances of civilization there was left in this world), so that they could take care of me instead. Then she could leave me there, go back to her solitary life as normal. Free of me.
I shook my head and laid back down, drawing the blanket up to my chin. Maybe I could get in another hour or so of shut eye before Art uprooted my (albeit, very brief) life. I stared at the ceiling, studying every crack and dent and skittering bug. There was a rectangular slab of glass on the ceiling, surrounded by ivy. Inside of it was a long, thick white tube. It was a light. Or rather, what was left of a light, now busted and defunct.
Wait.
Light.
Fluorescent light.
That was the exact light from my dream.
I shot upright and looked around, the desecrated room starting to become all-too familiar. Memories of the dream came flooding back. Fluorescent lights. White walls.
Unable to contain my growing curiosity, I got up to examine the room further. Plants grew through the cracks in the floor, the ceiling, the walls, everywhere. Nature had surely reclaimed the building since it fell. The walls weren’t white anymore, instead a faded, yellow-ish cream. I ripped off a strip of peeling paint, revealing a bone-white layer underneath.
For the last piece of damning evidence, I crept further toward the back of the room, finding an archway with a staircase. They didn't even creak as I climbed up, but they looked to be made of a marble-like compound, so that made sense. When I reached the top, I saw it.
The long corridor I had been running through in my dream.
It didn’t come as that much of a surprise; dreaming about the place one fell asleep in was probably normal. But why was everything perfectly pristine in my dream? Why were the lights working as if this place wasn’t abandoned? Why weren’t the walls cracked, filthy, dilapidated, as they were now?
And who was that woman, not standing at the other end of the corridor now?
Perhaps my dream took place before the city fell, but if so, how did I know what anything looked like back then?
Was it… a memory?
“Up already?” I heard from behind me. I whipped around and saw Art, just now waking up. She sat up and stretched.
"Couldn't fall back asleep.”
“Mmm.” Art grumbled in response, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes. She was not a morning person.
“Hey, Art. I think I finally remembered something.”
That woke her up. Her ears practically perked up like a dog. “Really? What?”
“Well, it’s not really a memory. It was a dream. A dream about a memory, I think. But it doesn’t make much sense.”
“Do tell.”
“It was about this place. That hallway,"I pointed. "But it was different in my dream. It was nice and clean, like how it probably looked before it fell, I think. The lights were on and everything. And there was this woman, I can’t remember what she looked like, but I feel like she was important.”
Art looked as if she were listening to the ranting of a madman, but she didn’t interrupt me.
“Do you think maybe I lived here before the city fell? Maybe that’s why you found me here. What caused it to fall, anyway? Was there Earthquake or something?”
“Those are a lot of questions I do not know the answer to.” Art stood up, shrugging on her jacket. “But I do know that this city has been in ruins for over a hundred years. No way you could have seen it in its glory days in your lifetime. Sorry, kid. It was just a dream.”
Just a dream. My heart sank at the thought, but I knew she was right. It was just a dream. Perhaps I just had an overactive imagination– it’s not like I would know. Ever since I woke up, I wasn’t sure who I was, nor who I was supposed to be.
Well, I was back to square one again. No memories, no leads, no nothing.
“Yes, you’re right. It was... just a dream. Sorry for getting both our hopes up.”
“Don’t apologize, kid. The people at the commune can probably help you get your memories back. Better than I ever could, anyway.” Art rummaged through her bag, then abruptly threw a jacket at my face. “Speaking of, put this on. We should get ready to leave.”
“Leave? Already?” I shucked the jacket on, finding it way too big for me. It must have been one of hers.
“Yeah, already. The journey’s gonna take a few days. Best to leave soon as possible.”
She wants to get rid of me as soon as possible. The thought invaded my mind before I could stop it. I couldn’t help but look hurt.
Art’s face softened just a little.
“Listen, kid. I’d keep you with me if I could. I’m just…” Art faltered, a sudden, pained expression on her face. She swallowed, and turned away. “I’m not cut out for this sort of thing. You will be better taken care of there. It’s for your own good. Okay?”
“Okay,” I muttered.
Art cuffed my sleeves for me and put my purple hair into a ponytail. She gave me a bandanna to wear over my face in case we came across somewhere particularly polluted, which, according to her, was most places on this land. After gathering all of her belongings into her singular backpack, she slung it over her shoulder and turned to me.
“Ready to go?” She asked, extending out a gloved hand.
“I guess.” I took her hand and let her lead me out of the threshold. I took one last look at the room, the memory of the strange dream fading away by the minute.
“Goodbye,” I whispered to the building. And with that, we left.
Not related to the other two Bio!mom Harley AUs that I did. Just... similar. I wrote this instead of sleeping, as per the usual.
—*—*—*—*—*
“I need your help.”
No accent, no threats of violence, no beating around the bush (figurative or otherwise). No fighting or unconscious bodies.
Just Harley Quinn with her hair down, no makeup, and completely serious, in the center of the Bat Cave. Even though her usual exaggerated Brooklynn accent (circa 1950s) had become a pretty inseparable part of her personality over the years, every now and then she forcibly stuffed it down and used her mostly unaccented voice. The one reminiscent of days with less colors on her face, a high bun, and a pristine white lab coat.
Every single one of the Bats and Birds present, fresh from an interrupted patrol thanks to her, could count the number of times they had seen Harley like this on one hand. Bruce would have the most recollections, but everyone else would have plenty of fingers left on said hand. So they all knew, especially when Bruce willingly pulled down his cowl so he could look Harley in the eye, that this was the start of something they were not likely to forget. And maybe their chances of survival were slim too.
“Harley,” Bruce’s voice was still gruff, seeing as he was still mostly Batman at the moment, but his eyes were soft. “Maybe you should tell us what you need help with first. And sit down. You look exhausted.”
Sure enough, there were dark circles under Harley’s eyes. She let Bruce-man lead her over to one of their debriefing tables and sit her down. She let out a huge sigh, her fingers tangling in her loose blond locks.
“I have a confession, and it isn’t gonna leave this cave, capiche?” The slight return of her accent relieved a little of the tension, but not much. Taking this as their cue, the rest of the bats spread out into their usual seats at the table. Bruce stayed near Harley, keeping a hand on her shoulder in silent support. Harley didn’t continue talking until he gave her a solemn nod in agreement. She gulped— an action that immediately returned the tension.
“... fifteen years ago, back when I was still with Joker, I disappeared off the Gotham scene for a few months. I’m sure a few of you remember,” she looked up, and a couple of the older vigilantes nodded. Really, Jason has still been Robin back then. But the memory stuck out in his head now that he was thinking about it.
“Yeah, you were breaking away from him a little bit, which was weird at the time,” Red Hood mused aloud, arms crossed. “I think you helped us out a couple times and did some of your first team ups with Ivy before you vanished. Then a few months go by and you were back in action with Joker, so we mostly ignored it as you just being you.”
Harley nodded. “Ah, my Ivy’s a lifesaver, even back then. She helped cover up the timeline by keeping me in action for longer than I should’a been without putting me at too much risk.”
“Timeline…” Red Robin spoke up, eyes huge even behind his mask. “You don’t mean—“
“Harley,” Bruce breathed, having also caught on. “You were pregnant?”
The air went still. Harley sniffed, eyes watering even as she smiled.
“Oh yeah. Shouldn’t have been possible, ya know? Me ‘n Joker being dumped in that damn acid should have made us both more sterile than an operatin’ room. But I knew I couldn’t raise a kid, so after she was born—“
“You kept her?” Damian interrupted, earning a gentle cuff over the head from Dick. Harley just snorted.
“Yeah. Not gonna lie, I thought about abortion. But the baby didn’t do nothin’ wrong, and I was still in love with Joker back then so I was ecstatic that I was able to make something new with part ‘a him in it. Still, I knew a baby didn’t deserve to be raised in Gotham. Especially not my baby, not with my enemies and history. Not with who her father was. I knew he’d never want her, never let me keep her. So I spent the last five months of my pregnancy lookin’ around for the best possible family to take her in. And I found them in Paris, France. A sweet couple, both of them bakers. Sabine, she’s both adorably sweet and super kickass. Comes from a Chinese family that is crazy about teachin’ their women martial arts. But nothing shady about it, I triple checked. Just bonding through kicking people in the face. Which is perfect, I wanted my baby to know how to defend herself. I knew she’d need those skills eventually. And Tom, that’s Sabine’s wife, he’s a gentle giant. Same size as Bane, but as harmless as a puppy and makes the best croissants ever. Seriously, the best.”
“Harley,” Bruce gently prodded, but there was a tiny grin on his face. Seeing her behaving so… so normally, so proud and reminiscent, was a rare treat. Bruce would be lying if he said he wasn’t proud of how far the woman had come. How she had freed herself and become a better person, mostly on her own.
“Right, right. The point,” Harley took a breath, rubbing her forehead. “I came clean to Tom and Sabine, but apparently they knew who I was the whole time. They just didn’t care— did I mention they are perfect? Anyway, once I explained everything, they agreed immediately to adopting my baby. They’d been wanting kids, but it would’a been too risky for Sabine’s health. That’s how I found them anyway, they were in the market to adopt. We named her Marinette. She took Tom and Sabine’s last names, hyphenated. We decided Quinn would be her middle name. And after that, I came back to Gotham and told myself that she was in good hands and I needed to forget about her. Cuz I was no good for her. I knew that. I went back to my old tricks. And then…” Harley chuckled, but it was self-depreciating.
“Then a few years passed, and I started breaking away from Joker for real. Then we broke up, I blew up Ace Chemicals while you guys were outta town doing Justice League and Young Justice shit. I started dating Ivy. And—“ she smiled softly at the table, clearly seeing something the rest of them couldn’t. “Then Ivy convinced me to go see her. Visit my baby, see how she’s been. And I did. Marinette was seven years old, but damn it to hell she was gorgeous. And say whatever you want about me and Joker— most of it will even be true— but neither of us are stupid. And she inherited all of our intelligence. All of it. She got my blue eyes. But she got his hair, which meant Sabine teased me relentlessly about ‘are you sure she isn’t that Wayne’s kid?’ And don’t make that face Bruce, you’d be lucky to have a kid half as beautiful as my Mari-pie. No offense, Damian. Anyway. Anyway, this is the important part. Or part of it.
“She sat there and listened to everything I had to say. Everything. A little seven year old, who could barely understand English at the time, and she listened without interrupting once. She never threw a fit, she wasn’t angry or confused. I told her about the things I’d done in the past— well, G rated versions— and she didn’t care. She called me Momma Harley right away, said she wanted to meet Aunt Ivy sometime soon, and started telling me everything about her that I’d missed. From that day on, she became my sunshine. The light of my life, and I still call her at least once a week every week. When I disappear for a few days out of the city? I’m visiting her—“
“You’re banned from international travel, Harley,” Dick scolded, but he sounded way too amused for it to work. He knew she had her ways, anyway. Nobody could actually stop Harley damn Quinn from doing whatever she wanted.
“—Ugh, she tells me the same thing every time! Disappointed glare and everything. I don’t know how I gave birth to such a goodie goodie, but somehow I did. Not important though! The important thing is, I’m always the first to hear when something new happens in her life. And we had decided that she wouldn’t visit me in Gotham until she was at least eighteen, but apparently she disobeyed me— which I should have expected honestly— and entered you guys’ WE international scholastic competition.”
“Oh no,” Bruce pinched the bridge of her nose. “Marinette Dupain-Cheng? The contest winner?” He finally pulled out a chair and sat down. “The winner gets an all-expense paid trip to Gotham for them and their whole class.”
“Exactly!” Harley threw up her hands. “Mari told me last week, and I’ve been trying to talk her out of coming ever since. But she’s inherited both of our stubbornness too, and she isn’t budgin’ a bit. ‘Momma Harley, I wanna see you and Auntie Ivy though!’ And ‘Momma, Gotham’s nothing I can’t handle,’ or my favorite, ‘Maybe you’ll finally get to see me dropkick someone three times my size then, and I’ll prove it.’”
“So that’s what you meant by you need our help,” Tim said as he leaned forward over the table. “Joker just broke out of Arkham yesterday. You want us to protect her.”
“I’d prefer if one of you was with her outside of the mask too, as often as possible,” Harley confirmed. “I can’t stop her from coming here anymore, but I also don’t trust Joker for a second. As soon as he sees her, I’m afraid he’ll make the connection.”
“She looks like him?” Damian asked, scrunching up his nose at the ugly mental image of Joker as a teenage girl. Harley shook her head, solemn.
“She looks like a dark-haired mini-me,” she corrected. “She even keeps her hair in pigtails as her way of showing support for me. And I know Marinette can kick ass, Sabine’s trained her well. But Marinette inherited more than I’d like from me,” Harley ran a hand through her hair. “I didn’t notice it until she was thirteen. She got a crush on a classmate, and it was almost like watching videos of me back during the early days of— well, of Harley Quinn. Just without the crime and insanity. She didn’t even realize that she was almost stalking the poor kid until I pointed it out, and luckily I was able to put my doctorate to good use and we nipped that right in the bud ASAP. She never meant it that way, anyway. As soon as I explained things to her, she was horrified and immediately asked me to help her learn how to have a healthy relationship. That was a fun discussion,” Harley grimaced. “But she still gets attached to people really, really easily. Once she grew out of her crush on that boy, she adopted him as her unofficial brother. She already calls Selina “Auntie,” even though I’ve barely mentioned her to Marinette. She gets attached fast, and deeply. And I’m afraid that even after all the warning I’ve done, all the stories I’ve told her—“
“You’re afraid she’ll get attached to Joker just like you did,” Bruce finished for her, closing his eyes. “Because she knows he’s her father.”
“Yes,” Tears were slowly dripping down her face already, her hands curled into fists so tightly that her knuckles were paper white. “You know how he is. If he finds out she’s his biological daughter, he’ll immediately try to take advantage of that. And he’s far too good with his words for people like me and Mari. I’m worried outta my mind. Please. Help keep my baby safe from him.”
“We will,” Jason no longer had his helmet on, or the domino mask that he usually wore underneath it. All of them knew masks were merely formality with Harley nowadays. And he needed to look her directly in the eye so she could see how serious he was. “I can sign up as a bodyguard for the class. It won’t be weird, seeing as they’re tourists and this is Gotham. They also have several rich kids in their group if I remember right.”
Bruce nodded, agreeing with Jason. “That’s a good idea. I can lead the class on their tours of WE personally. That’ll serve the purpose of keeping an eye on her and shutting up the investors that keep begging me to make more public appearances for the sake of the company. Marinette’s name is already released to the news as the winner of the contest, so we can’t keep her out of the spotlight long. Tim, you’ll have to keep an eye on any and all pictures of the class. Try to erase or doctor the images with her in it well enough that connections between her and Harley can’t be easily made. Dick, you and Damian will be in charge of keeping an eye out for any activity from Joker. The slightest hint, and you notify all of us. We’ll decide on a case-by-case basis who is necessary to stick with the class and who goes after the clown.”
“She’s gonna sneak out of her hotel to stay with me and Ivy,” Harley admitted, bringing the (now slightly judgemental) attention back to her. She raised her hands up in surrender. “She didn’t tell me that, and I didn’t approve or suggest it! I just know my baby too well to not realize that that’s her plan. Could ya provide an escort?”
Bruce sighed. “This is gonna be an eventful month.”
“BATMAN!” (#6): Digital Re-Draws
1) Joker: Few ever want to tussle w/ the insane clown, the Joker for how unpredictable he is. Only one person in all of Gotham dares to do such a thing, the Batman. Joker is a prankster who loves causing chaos and above average mayhem in the city of Gotham. He finds enjoyment out of pranking unsuspecting citizens and committing crimes in general. The Joker, despite his insanity, is quite intelligent and is capable of creating and coordinating his schemes w/ incredible efficiency. Joker the colourful opposite of Batman. He’s a brightly coloured, loud, over the top, and loves being the centre of attention; while Batman is quiet, swift darkly coloured and prefers sticking to the shadows. The two are yin and yang, one cannot exist w/o the other. This interpretation of the clown prince of crime is sort of a mix of the Adam West Joker, Jim Carrey’s “The Mask”, the 2004 version from “The Batman” (the one I grew up w/ and watched on occasion), the Gremlins from the film franchise of the same name and Judge Doom after he reveals he is a toon. Joker’s design is based on old school clowns.
2) Robin: An orphaned boy wonder and acrobatic, and eventual partner of the Dark Knight. Has a brother-sister dynamic going on w/ Batgirl. Excellent at parkour and a bit of a show off too most days. Otherwise he tends to keeps to himself. Has taken to making origami art as a hobby and pastime. Smart and among the top of his class, only being rivalled by another student at his school, Edna Nigma (being his arch nemesis both in and out of costume as, The Riddler).
3) Poison Ivy: In her past, she was a genuinely nice girl to be around. She took to gardening as a hobby and as her profession. She had a fascination w/ nature and her magnificent creatures; plants and all. Pamela Isley was a determined, intelligent, and resourceful young woman and was the prodigy of her hometown. Under the suggestion of her peers, she moved to Gotham for potential career opportunities. She had the hope of making a difference in the world. That was rather difficult as people cared very little for her ideas. This didn’t stop her from trying. One day, to her horror, discovered that the runoff a nearby chemical plant was not only destroying what little wilderness there was left in Gotham, but it was all being covered up by them under order of the mayor. Seeing her chance to finally make a difference, took action. She snuck into he plant to collect evidence of their cover up, but was caught. They quickly made short work of her and shot her dead. They dumped her body in the very same swamp their harmful chemical was polluting. Not long after, she was reborn. Her resurrection left her genetic code completely altered to that of a plant. All she wanted was revenge against not only the people responsible for her death, but all of humanity for the injustice and lack of respect for mother nature. Pamela Isley was gone, and all that was left was poison... Poison Ivy, that is. For Ivy’s design, I went w/ a more “unassuming, friendly gardener” type of look than her usual “seductive & sexy”, as to differentiate this version of the character from others. And I also gave her two carnivorous plant companions that live atop her sunhat.
4) Mr. Freeze: Victor Friez was abused emotionally and physically by his parents as a child. His only comfort was his loving and caring grandmother. She died when he was at the age of 5. They made the decision to immigrate from Germany to America shortly afterwards. There, he met and became friends w/ Barbara Gordon and her own friend Nora. A few months later, Barbara had noticed that something wasn’t right and informed her father about the situation and child services was alerted. Victor, now in foster care, was given a new home with two loving parental figures. For the next 9 years, life seemed almost perfect. He became a skilled technician and engineer and by the time of high school, he and his childhood sweetheart, Nora had been dating for 4 years. Victor’s adoptive parents were tragically killed in a car crash. Again, his close friend and girlfriend were there for his support. As high school was drawing to a close, Victor had made the decision of proposing to Nora. Babara was completely ecstatic about it and was more than happy for him. Before he had the chance to do so, Nora was struck by a car fleeing from the police. Barbara, as Bat Girl, chased after the crooks. Heartbroken and alone, Victor (after a night of drinking heavily) broke into a nearby facility and attempted suicide by ingesting the experimental cryogenic chemicals. As he was succumbing to the effects, he toppled over onto a nearby table holding the other experimental cryogenic chemicals. Victor was soaked head-to-toe in the substance. There he lied for the entirety of the night. The result was not death, but he was far worse. Victor was no longer capable of living in temperatures above freezing. His condition left him forever trapped in the cold. With nothing left to lose, he turned to the life of crime to fund his efforts in freezing all of Gotham along w/ the rest of the world. In this interpretation of Mr. Freeze he is much younger and knows Barbara Gordon (as she was the one to introduce him to Nora) and has a dynamic w/ Bat Girl similar to Batman and Two-Face’s dynamic from the old animated series. On occasion, they see eye-to-eye as they both miss the deceased Nora. I thought it’d be interesting to go w/ this direction and have Bat Girl be centre stage whenever the three go up against him. I don’t know, let me know what you think of this change.
5) Scarecrow: In her youth, Joanne was constantly tormented by bullies for being easily scared of pretty much everything. She grew bitter as the years passed and wanted revenge on her tormentors ever so badly. One fateful night, she was pressured into seeing Nightmare on Elm Street and found the film fascinating, conceptually that is, it scared the living daylights out of her upon first viewing. She had enough of their scares and plotted her revenge. She took inspiration from the very film and donned a scarecrow costume and a real scythe. That night, she went from house to house giving her bullies a taste of their own medicine. She enjoyed terrifying others as opposed to being the one getting terrified. She found it invigorating. As the night drew to a close, she arrived at the last house to finish the job. However, she took it too far and by accident she killed the bully. The parents were absolutely horrified when they found a scarecrow standing over their dead son’s body impaled w/ a scythe and w/ various slashes all across his body. She quickly fled the scene and vanished into the night. Joanne didn’t mean to do what she did, but brushed it off as she felt he had deserved it and that she was in the right. News of what happened quickly spread, and the bullies, now a bunch of nervous wrecks, were too preoccupied w/ talking about how their close encounters w/ the scarecrow and that it killed their friend the same night. For weeks they lay awake in terror and their health slowly deteriorated. This was satisfying to watch from Joanne’s perspective. She was never caught or bullied again. She found herself finding enjoyment in being the one causing the terror instead of being the one being terrified. Years later, Joanne Crane began working on different methods of causing fear. One was w/ the use of chemicals that trigger certain parts of the brain that causes terrifying hallucinations to the victim. Joanne worked as a psychologist at Arkham Asylum for a good couple of years, testing out her fear-inducing chemicals on the patients there. She left before anyone suspected her of any wrong-doings. She is a skilled acrobatic, intelligent and had ingenuity w/ making her devices. She later works as a professor at the same university Barbra Gordon (a.k.a. Bat Girl) is studying at as a professor of psychology and phobias. Barbara suspects her of criminal activity later on. One of her higher ups begins to suspect her of embezzling money from the university, and she is fired. Wanting revenge (and a chance to test out her new batch of chemicals) she dons another scarecrow outfit and by the end, her higher up is lying on the floor a nervous wreck. Once again, she found it invigorating. She got cocky w/ her power and wanted to face Batman to prove she was superior to him and be forever known as the one who brought the Dark Knight to his knees. Her plan went accordingly at first, but was eventually thwarted by Robin and Bat Girl. Joanne was arrested and sent to Arkham Asylum w/ the other loonies of Gotham City, some even recognizing her as the one who performed the terrible fear inducing experiments on them. Now they could be the ones who could get their revenge...
6) Two-Face: A wealthy man and politician, Harvey Dent was respected for his helpfulness in and around the community. He is a close friend of Bruce Wayne and Commissioner Gordon. The seemingly perfect model citizen of Gotham has a dark secret however, as he suffers from a split personality. For years, he’s been able to keep that side of him under control, but it’s presence remains nonetheless. It all changed one day when his entire left half was badly burned in an explosion. The mental and physical trauma is what caused him to finally snap and become the crime boss known as Two-Face. On his Harvey Dent side, he is much more calm, collected and is a smooth talker. Two-Face, on the other hand (or in this case, side) is much more brash, violent and aggressive. Sometimes he’s more Harvey, sometimes he’s more Two-Face. On rare occasions, both. He, for the most part, sticks close to the Two-Face from “Batman:The Animated Series”. He completes the thematic trio: Batman = outside the law, Gordon = within the law, Two-Face/Harvey = his own law. Not much else to add or say.
7) Catwoman: She brings a whole new meaning to the term, ‘Cat Burglar’. Cat-woman enjoys the thrill of stealing the most valuable of jewels and trinkets from the most heavily guarded of places, all for the sake of because she can. Unlike Batman who has a array of gadgets at his disposal, Cat-woman has to rely on tech she has at home for her heists and all stored in her trusty backpack w/ great efficiency. Batman has his Bat Utility Belt, Cat-Woman has her Cat Backpack.
8) The Riddler: In my take, Edward Nigma (now Edna) is a foe for Robin to face — both in and out of costume. She is a child prodigy who goes to his school. Both are always getting on eachother's nerves. Edna is extremely smart and has grown the habit of puzzle solving anything and everything to the point of obsession. One being the greatest mystery of all. Who is Batman? Has a double-life where she commits crimes (not big crazy ones, but big enough to grab Batman and Robin's attention) as The Riddler. Usually he sends Robin to deal w/ her. Her costume is homemade and her ponytails meant to resemble the “?”. Character wise, I’d have a few personality traits/quirks and energy similar to Jim Carrey’s portrayal, only greatly dialled back of course. Maybe a bit more peppy. I had made this decision as to 1) greatly differ my take w/ others and 2) keep in the theme w/ my take w/ all three having their own foes they can face: Batman has Joker, Batgirl has Mr. Freeze, and now Robin has Riddler. Let me know what you think. 👍
9) Penguin: The Penguin is a crimelord and carries out his crimes in secret. He is a sophisticated (well, that’s how he sees himself anyways) man of culture, a classy lifestyle and a lover of the fine arts. His vast wealth (both inherited and stolen) allows him to have these luxuries that he is privileged too. To keep his image clean in the eyes of the public, he regularly donates to charity and hosts parties at his nightclub The Frozen Tundra. Oswald Cobblepot is his real name, but is referred to by Penguin as that is what he prefers to be called when engaging in criminal activities. Penguin has the tendency to loses his cool though whenever his physical appearance is mocked. In public, he’ll simply laugh it off as nothing, (and express his anger later in private), but will not hesitate to end you otherwise elsewhere. Out of Batman’s many adversaries, he is the only one who is declared legally sane. He is sent to the Gotham Penitentiary instead of Arkham Asylum like the others whenever he gets caught in the act.
...
Be sure to reblog, and let me know what you think. 👍
Steve Harrington is a liar.
He always has been.
Nearly everything about him is a perfectly crafted facade.
From the story of his family’s move to Hawkins when he was eight, to the smile that slides easily onto his face when he tells Robin I’m fine.
Steve is a liar.
But it's all out of necessity. All for the greater of some good he isn’t all that clear on anymore.
It was always about protection.
Protecting his friends and everyone in Hawkins from the truth about Hawkins National Laboratory.
Then it was about protecting himself from his powers.
From the way his words had a knack of worming their way into someone’s brain. Of setting up shop inside and clanging around until they could do nothing but bow to his suggestion.
Just because he could get his way with the right inflection and the telltale shiver down his spine, didn’t mean that that was okay.
It was drilled into him the first night he arrived in Hawkins.
After his file was stamped with a large red mark that read defective, he was given to one of the scientists and her husband.
The Harringtons.
A normal new family from Eastern Oklahoma.
That’s what they told everyone.
That’s what they made sure Steve parroted to everyone in his brand new school.
His new father took a cigar to the tattoo on his wrist, welting the flesh with an ugly burn. He ignored Steve’s screams and tears.
You have to fit in here, Steven, he had said, the cigar smoldering between his fingers, Steve clutching his wrist, eyes shining with tears. You have to fit in and be normal.
So Steve lied.
He smiled and told everyone he came from a normal family from normal Oklahoma. He said that he lived in a normal house, and read normal books, and played normal sports.
And he tried, and failed, to convince himself the lab was a dream.
-
“We should do something after this.”
Steve was careful to keep his voice casual. He didn’t want to let Robin in on how much he was dreading returning to his empty house tonight.
Robin didn’t acknowledge him. She was sorting the returned movies, placing them in piles of genre so they could easily be returned to their proper section.
Steve quietly lifted his leg, and lightly kicked her hip.
She glared at him.
“Quit ignorin’ me. Just say yes, or no.” It’s not like if she said no it would crush him or anything. No. It’s fine.
“I just have a bunch of homework that’s all, like, due tomorrow,” she said it slowly, as though telling him a beloved relative had died.
Was it that obvious how lonely he is?
“Don’t worry about it, Buck.” Robin took school real serious. She had perfect grades every year and had already applied to sixteen colleges and universities, including four Ivy League options.
So Steve didn’t blame her for not skulking around with him.
With college-less, nowhere bound Steve.
“I’m really sorry,” she began, getting that sad look in her eye like that night in the mall bathroom when Steve spilled his drugged-out guts. Literally, and metaphorically.
“Nah, I was just lookin’ for something to do. It’s okay, Robin. Really.”
And it was.
Almost.
It’s just that, Steve’s not got a lot going for him right now.
He’s got a big empty house, and a brain that likes to give him excessive nightmares, and one age-appropriate friend in the whole place.
But he doesn’t wanna talk about all that shit.
And Robin looked like there was something on the tip of her tongue. Something her teeth were barely holding back.
So Steve just scooped up the stack of neatly ordered Action films, and made his way over to the far shelf, taking himself out of the situation before it would get to a place that would only make him lie more and more.
Robin means well. He knows she does.
It just feels like a lot of her well-meaning chats end up with Steve lying through his fucking teeth and Robin nearly in tears of frustration at his lack of openness with her.
She feels like being tortured and drugged together gives them a close kind of kinship very few share.
Steve feels like he’s got just too much fucked-up baggage to dump on her.
Not when they’re trying to put the Upside Down behind them.
Not that Steve could ever put it behind him.
He felt something build in his gut. Something hot and heavy. Something that always meant his powers were scraping at the walls of the neat little cave he had shut them in. Something that meant his skin would burn until he unleashed some of his pent-up energy.
He took a deep breath, blowing out the air slowly through his nose.
He had rules to his power. Rules he had given himself, mostly. Things he’d never use his powers for.
He tried to avoid his powers at all costs, but he had seen what could happen if he tried to tamp them down. It was less dangerous to open the lid of the box just a tiny bit.
Especially if he did it right.
He made his way back over to Robin, finding that spot in his brain that made a shudder zip down his spine. The spot that was made of cold and electric heat.
It was always too simple when he let the power take over.
Locate her feeling. Let him consume him.
And then just, twist it as much as he wants.
“Robin,” he spoke slowly, honing his suggestion. “You don’t have to feel bad about not spending time with me tonight.”
He felt her sadness and guilt about the evening recede about as fast as the tide.
She really shouldn’t feel bad about ditching him, especially not when her education is the main priority.
He matched her lazy grin, wiping his nose discreetly, only a small drop of blood smeared against his hand.
The rest of the shift passed without incident, and the roaring feeling in Steve’s gut had been sated enough for the time being.
So he pushed it back out of his mind, and returned to his empty house.
He was saving up to get his own place. He really was. But it was easier this way. He didn’t pay any bills, had lots of space to himself, and a pool in the backyard (that he never used).
And it’s hard for him to explain, but there’s something tugging him back into this house all the time.
He doesn’t know if it’s because it’s the only home he ever knew after the pain and fear that was his childhood in the lab, or if it’s something else that makes him feel tethered to the too-big house.
Sometimes he thought there was a sense of safety in the old place.
With parents that spent excessive amounts of time doing research for things he didn’t understand but was sure were important, it was largely an emotion-free place.
Which was good for Steve.
High emotion situations made his power boil up and spill over the edge like a pot of water on the stove.
A place like his empty house, he could keep everything in check. Not get his feelings tangled with those around him. Not catch thoughts that were just beginning to be molded into something brand new.
He clambered into bed, punching his pillows around in a way that was decidedly not petulant.
There was a steady silence in the old house. A silence that was as depressing as it was easy on his brain.
And there wasn’t silence.
Creaks.
Creaks issuing from downstairs. From the floorboards in the hallway.
Footsteps.
Steve was out of bed in a second, bat held aloft in as close to ready position as he could maintain while bolting down the stairs in his socks and faded green gym shorts.
He knew how to navigate the house without a sound. Practice of tip-toeing around a volatile not-father kinda ended up giving him something useful.
The creaks were still progressing, moving up the hallway from the back of the house, where his parents’ empty bedroom sat still.
The person was getting closer, lumbering slowly as if they were trying to be quiet themselves.
Steve adjusted his grip on the bat, taking proper batting stance, ready for the intruder to round the corner into his section of the hall.
First sign of a person, and Steve would swing.
No questions asked.
The floorboard before the bend in the hall gave a loud sound, and he could’ve sworn he heard someone curse under their breath.
He closed his eyes, and swung.
His bat sailed through the air, and connected with, not an intruder.
And then he was filled with an overwhelming sense of fear. A completely feral state of fight or flight made him nearly bare his teeth in an animalistic growl. He felt fear, and dread, and pure stubborn, stupid resolve.
It nearly blinded him, the emotions were so thick and clear.
And then there whooshed out of him, as though being sucked up by a feelings vacuum, leaving him empty and confused.
His top lip was covered in blood.
He had a lot of fucking questions as he stared at the bat, hanging by it’s long nails in the hallway wall, the ominous creaking moving past him towards the stairs.
The footsteps that were caused by no one.
It’s official.
Steve’s lost it.
He’s fucking crazy.
He’s hearing footsteps and voices swearing quietly, and he’s going mad and completely batshit and should be tucked away in a padded room for the rest of his life.
He didn’t even bother to wrench the bat out of the wall as he stumbled after the imagined footsteps.
He clearly needed to get a good night’s sleep, and to forget that anything happened at all tonight.
-
Billy hates Harrington’s house.
He doesn’t, really. It’s given him excellent shelter while he pulled himself together, and it’s out of town enough to serve as a good base for the little gang of Lost Boys he had accumulated.
It’s just that, the old house likes to make a lot of noise.
It keeps him on edge.
Every squealing door hinge, and every creaky floorboard sets his teeth on edge and makes him whip around in a frenzy, expecting to see a demogorgon snarling at him from the sitting room.
He nearly had a heart attack when he heard the thuds coming from upstairs.
He generally liked to avoid the top floor of the house.
Harrington’s bedroom was up there, and it wigged him out something fierce. He’d only been in the dilapidated version of it one time, his first night in the house he had claimed for safety.
He didn’t intend to stay the night in there, he had just stumbled upon it, and curled up in the bed.
He remembers not sleeping the entire night. He was so scared after coming to in the library, something slimy and disgusting slipping its way out of his throat.
The whole place had been screaming, as though the Upside Down itself was alive. Alive and being horrifically murdered.
He didn’t know what it was called then, all he knew was that Harrington’s house was the first one he came across, and that Harrington’s room was depressingly empty and impersonal.
But, there was a thudding coming from that general area, and if some kinda shitty creature was making its way into the house, he needed to hedge it off before it did any damage.
He took hold of his ax, never far from his side these days, and slipped out of his cot.
The floorboards in the hallway were creaky, and he tried to walk slowly, muffling his footsteps as much as he could in his heavy boots, not wanting to warn the monster he was coming for it.
He cataloged the crew in his head: Hopper had his troop of three in the basement where they were resting up for the supply run tomorrow. Timothy was on nightwatch with his team of five. Billy was in a pack with four others; Heather Holloway, her mother, Janet, and the two boys they found skulking around the library the same night everyone seemed to wake up. One of the boys was called Andrew. The other hadn’t spoken a single word the entire time they’d been trapped.
Billy liked to call him by different names each time he referred to the kid. Trying to get him to laugh. He couldn’t’ve been more than seven years old, and he was trapped in this fucking hellscape with the rest of them.
Andrew was thirteen. Billy didn’t like to look at him much. Andrew reminded him of Max. Which made Billy feel empty and achy in a way he didn’t think was very productive for survival.
But Andrew took a shine to Janet Holloway. Probably missing his mother and needing more comfort than his thirteen-year-old self was willing to admit.
The Holloway women were a hell of a lot feistier than Bill originally gave them credit for, saving his ass in a scrap just as often as he had been there for theirs. Heather and Janet were equal parts caring and soft, with the right amounts of clever and bossy to take point on their team.
Billy let himself be the muscle.
He let himself be the watchdog and attack dog. He took nightwatches and never let his weapons out of his grasp.
Everyone had a role.
And that was perfectly okay.
They had to keep together in this world. They wouldn’t survive it otherwise.
They’d all lost enough people to understand that.
One of the boards gave a hefty creak under his left foot, and he breathed a quiet fuck through his bandana, listening for more of the thudding.
It had stopped about forty seconds before, Billy had counted, and he couldn’t hear any other sounds of something forcing its way inside. Plus, the nightwatch hadn’t sounded any alarms.
He took another step, ax held ready and aloft in case he came face to ugly face with one of the horrible creatures that prowled the night.
He rounded the corner, and there was a loud bang on the wall next to his head.
He jumped as paint chipped off the wall and flew all over him.
He was hit with a feeling of intense fear, and adrenaline rush that caused all the blood in his ears to rush. He looked wildly around, seeing, nothing.
Billy bared his teeth, ready to go down fucking swinging.
As long as he took the fucker down with him, that’s all that matters.
Save the rest.
And he stood, ready to fight, ready to die.
And there was nothing.
Nothing in the hallway. He was all alone.
None of this shit made any sense. He hadn’t dreamed the wall cracked beside his head, and looking back, there were holes in the wall, and a big dent that had splinted the white paint and drywall beneath it.
There was some fucked up shit going on, and Billy didn’t like it one bit.
He continued down the hall, creeping to the stairs to check the original source of the noises that had woken him up.
Harrington’s room was pretty much just as he remembered it from that first night in the house.
It was sparse and sad-looking. The covers on the bed were all jostled and thrown around, the horrible spindle-like vines covering nearly every surface in the room.
They had cleared the tendrils in other rooms, cutting them and burning them back, ensuring the vines didn’t start creeping over them when they weren’t looking.
Billy didn’t fancy being covered and tethered by the slimy black vines. He was pretty much over all this Upside Down shit.
He took a cursory look around Harrington’s room, not noticing any signs of forced entry from a creature, really nothing was out of place.
The meager school trophies on the bookshelf next to the closet looked rotted and tarnished, just like everything else in this absolute hell called a parallel universe. There were few pictures in this room, much like the whole house. It had taken Billy a long time to notice the lack of inhabitancy the house had. The way it seemed to feel so cold and empty, it would be that way in the real world too.
His eyes swept over the dilapidated dresser, cataloging the room quickly for anything that should worry him.
Billy deemed the whole scene safe, and made sure to close the door tightly as he retreated back downstairs.
Steve’s going fucking crazy.
He was still in bed, his alarm clock ringing angrily at him as it had for the past six minutes.
He hadn’t slept at all last night.
Something just felt. Off.
The feelings in his chest were scrambled, and they felt foreign to him. Like he had taken in somebody else’s emotions.
But proximity was the key to his power, and he was alone. Alone alone.
Like, the closest person was Mrs. Gardfeld in the next house, all the way across their combined, much too big, yards.
It felt like. It felt like someone was in the house with him. Someone was in the house with him, and they were scared, and stubborn, and tired, and a flurry of things that made Steve feel ill.
And he couldn’t push them out.
He couldn’t find the chasm between this slew of someone else’s shit, and his own messy cocktail of feelings.
The other feelings were like those awful vines in the tunnel. Snaking around under his feet, wiggling up his ankles and keeping him stuck in the mud. Wrapping around his own emotions and squeezing until they just merged into one.
He’s lost the metaphor.
Doesn’t matter.
His feelings are fucked and his brain is fucked and his day is fucked.
And he has to work a double at Family Fuckin’ Video.
He found his way out of bed. Not going very far, just standing next to his warm nest of blankets, debating getting back in and hiding for the rest of his life.
He was going to be late for work.
He didn’t really give a fuck.
Keith would be all smug and probably make some remarks about Steve not even being worth the less-than-minimum wage he was making.
He took a shower, not so much cleaning himself as letting the lukewarm water cascade down on him and hope it got rid of the stench of sweat and anxiety and bad sleep that was clinging angrily to his skin.
His brain was empty.
Empty save for the pounding otherness that were these horrible fucking feelings.
Robin didn’t even have the heart to call him out for being nearly half an hour late.
“You look like shit.”
No, she just called him out for looking like shit.
“Y’know, it’s really wonderful to have such a caring and thoughtful friend in these trying times.”
She rolled her eyes. He always told her one day she was gonna get stuck like that. With her eyes permanently fixed towards the ceiling in exasperation.
“Drop the attitude, Steve Harrington. Just because you didn’t sleep doesn’t mean I have to suffer.”
Sometimes it was hard to tell if she was joking. Steve just clenched his jaw and stared at her blankly. Either she would get mad at him, or sigh and roll her eyes.
She sighed and rolled her eyes.
Bingo.
She wasn’t actually mad at him.
“You okay?”
“Jus’, some weirdness. Bad vibes.”
He couldn’t give her more than that. Couldn’t say I can feel someone else in my house and I don’t know if someone is hiding in my house or if I’m going crazy, oh and by the way, I was one of those freaky lab kids and I can manipulate and feel people’s thoughts and emotions, by the way.
That’s too much for a slow shift on a Saturday morning.
That’s too much for really any time of any day.
No, Steve fully plans to take all that shit to the grave. Like a real man, his dad would say.
“Well, if you could take your bad vibes back to rewind duty, that would leave all the good vibes up here to me.” She shooed him off with her hand, landing a quick slap square on his left asscheck when he groaned and dragged his feet dramatically on his way to the back room.
Not that Steve would ever actually complain about rewind duty. Steve preferred doing it to anything else in the place. Especially re-shelving. That was just asking for someone to come ask him for a movie recommendation. Steve only watched the same five campy old westerns and when he recommends any of those, people seem to wanna get out of his face right quick.
No, rewinding was dull and monotonous and solitary, all the shit that Steve really needed on a day like today.
There was a strict routine and he didn’t have to think or do anything.
Just sit. New tape. Rewind. Put in case. Put in re-shelve bucket. New tape. Rewind. Put in case. And again and again and again until all the tapes were ready to go.
Hawkins tended to take out a lot of movies on the weekend. Not much else to do when you aren’t sixteen and ready to hit up any party you could possibly weasel your way into.
So, Steve had about fifty some odd tapes to rewind from the past few days and he was feeling benignly excited about sitting in the small room for most of his shift.
It was easy to pass the shift like that.
Sitting with the quiet whirring of the tapes being tracked back to the beginning. Not having to deal with anyone’s thoughts except his own tedious ones about when he should take his lunch break and reminding himself to check the TV Guide for anything good tonight.
It was an odd emptiness that took hold of him throughout the day. And he almost felt, well.
Lonely.
He almost felt lonely.
Which is fucking bonkers because that horrible feeling of someone else had well and truly fucked him over last night, and well into this morning, but he kind. Missed. The other presence.
He’s officially crazy.
Someone find this boy a padded fucking cell because Steve Harrington has officially gone all kinds of batshit bananas wacky.
He’s feeling lonely because the horrible not his feelings of fear and anger and betrayal and desperation aren’t clogging up his little brain sink. Even when they were, the brain sink was threatening to burst and leak all over his brain kitchen.
Or something to that effect.
He let his eyes unfocus, watching Jaws at double speed and backward for the fourth time that day.
There was something about the foreign feelings he just couldn’t quite wrap his head around.
Something twinging in the back of his brain, screaming at him to open his eyes and pay attention.
But that’s never been Steve’s strong suit.
-
“Stupid. Fucking. Vines .”
Hopper muttered to himself a lot.
It was usually too muffled underneath his own bandana face covering and the hefty beard he had been sporting to discern whatever he was thinking, but it’s not like hating the awful black tendrils of gross plant/monster/everything-that-made-up-the-Upside-Down hybrid of vine-ish tentacles was something that just Hopper experienced.
It was a sentiment they all shared as they hacked away at the new growth in the dilapidated Bradley’s Big Buys.
They had already ransacked the general store five times over, and took as much as they could salvage from the wreckage of the other-dimensional mall.
Supplies were needed, and they had to be smart about it.
Things had been quiet lately.
Not many beasties out and about since the night they all seemed to come to.
Hopper had said something about the gate closing and the brain being cut off from the body.
Billy hadn’t listened.
He’d been scared off his ass and all that had really registered was clear for now.
So, they made supply runs. And poked around town for any survivors left to take back to Basecamp Harrington. Only Billy called it that.
They had the runs down to a system.
Pry away any vines they could, burning them back as they went, making enough room to slip into the bargain store, gather as much canned food and grimy medical supplies as they could manage, and book it back to the relative safety of the big house on the edge of the forest.
Nobody talked about what they’d do when they ran out of supplies. When they’d exhausted their resources and were stuck with nothing but the vines on the ground and the spores in the air.
Billy got it.
It’s not like he wants to hear he’ll probably die of starvation and/or a gangrenous infection before he’s eighteen.
They just. Make do.
Ration food and keep each other safe.
Always thinking about the minute they’re in and the minute coming up. Not looking too far forward.
There’s nothing to see too far in the future.
Billy crashed the blunt end of his ax through the sliding door at the front of the store, clearing away as much as he could.
Janet and Andrew would slip inside first go, taking as much as they could carry with them. Next round, Heather would take the little one and gather anything left.
Billy would keep watch.
He always kept watch.
Things had been too good for too long.
After the first wave of those who didn’t make it, the whole broken side of the Earth was too kind to them. Not sending horrible fleshy monsters to nearly suck out their very souls.
Billy didn’t think this could last for much longer.
Heather took the little one by the hand, rushing past her mother and Andrew as they returned with their supplies. Billy did a quick scan of them, noting no new injuries. Nothing out of the norm.
Supply runs were choreographed down to the minute.
Should the group not return in forty-five minutes, a search team was sent out.
The small group trudged back to the Harrington safehouse, keeping in the shadows, not a single one of them daring to speak. Billy walked slightly behind the others, never letting himself relax for a single second.
Things were too quiet.
-
The feeling hit Steve over the head like a sack of bricks being whacked against his skull.
Walking into his home was like walking into a stinking den of fear and anxiety. The air was clogged with so many emotions Steve felt like he was choking on them, slowly being crushed under their weight.
Whoever was emitting all these, Steve felt sorry for them. He can’t imagine living with this much bad energy taking up space in someone’s brain. He could barely cope with his own terrible bullshit. He doesn’t know how someone could cope with this.
He tried to move through his evening to the best of his ability.
He nearly set the house on fire when he left the tin foil covering on his frozen meal, causing the microwave to spark angrily at him, the potatoes underneath the corner of foil that had nearly caught fire to smolder and blacken.
Even in the shower, the water as hot and steamy as he could stand, he felt that prickle he couldn’t get rid of.
Like if he could just close his eyes and reach out far enough, his fingers would brush someone else. Someone nearby.
He’s felt it before. That there was a person just out of reach. A person he could feel clear as a bell, but couldn’t alter. Couldn’t manipulate. Just had to experience everything that was going on inside and try to hold on for the ride.
He wore headphones to bed, blasting a mixtape Robin had made for him last month. Something with a lot of heavy guitars and girls wailing about society.
He doesn’t think it was all that good, but it helped. Helped him feel like maybe the person wasn’t seeping into his own soul.
And the whining synth of Patti Smith finally let him get some goddamn sleep.
“Hello?”
It was his house.
But it wasn’t his house.
It was a blank void. It was nothing. It was nowhere.
But for some reason, his brain kept telling him it was his house.
“Harrington?”
It was Billy. Hargrove.
But it wasn’t Billy.
He was dirty, covered in soot and horrible black sludge that made Steve’s stomach churn.
“Why are you in my house?”
Billy looked around the blank void all around them. Water sloshed on the floor, lapping at Billy’s black boots. Steve observed his own toes.
He was barefoot, but he couldn’t feel the water.
“This is your house?”
Steve didn’t want to explain.
“You’re dead.”
“Could be soon.”
Nothing Billy said made any sense. But then, Billy never made much sense when he was alive, either.
He was an enigma to Steve. A big question mark all wrapped up with a gorgeous face and perfect body.
“Where is this to you?”
Why was Steve’s brain so adamant on declaring this place his house?
“Somewhere safe.”
-
So.
That’s something.
Dreaming about Harrington.
Not necessarily something that Billy wanted to have happen to him while he was experiencing the worst possible time in his life.
Or maybe he did.
He’d said it in the dream.
Somewhere safe.
It’s what he felt in that blackness.
Safety. Warmth. Hope.
All the shit he hasn’t felt since he opened his eyes in the rank-ass library.
That darkness was like a harness, keeping him grounded to something real. Tucking him in gently at night and kissing him on the head.
It made waking up that much shittier.
Knowing he’d be on nightwatch with Heather and Janet tonight, he used resting up as an excuse to lay on his cot, hardly moving in the clouded air.
He needed to process.
There was something so fucking weird about that dream.
It felt real in the moment, and he didn’t question anything that had happened.
Why there was water on the ground at his feet? Why Harrington was there wearing pajamas Billy could only describe as skanky? All of this made perfect fucking sense to dream Billy.
Awake Billy, had some fuckin’ questions.
Mostly, those previously listed. As well as: what the fuck?
He blames seeing Steve specifically on being in his house. That makes sense. You tend to think about a guy quite a lot when you’re living in the broken shell of his family home. He blames seeing Steve in those itsy-bitsy shorts and a homemade cropped t-shirt on the well repressed sexual interest he refused to admit he felt towards the guy.
All that made sense.
But everything else.
Steve said he was dead.
Was he dead?
Was this Hell?
Purgatory?
He’s read The Divine Comedy, and this doesn’t quite match up with any of the shit Dante waxed on about.
And dream Billy didn’t think that was a weird thing to say to someone. To accuse them of being dead. He just said could be soon and then acted like that was a normal fucking response.
His head was spinning out of control.
The only thing that made sense was when Billy said they were somewhere safe.
Because, they were.
Even in the void place, he knew they were safe.
There was a small tapping sound on the wall next to the open door frame.
The door had long since rotted right through.
“Miss Janet sent me to see if you’re alright.”
Andrew was always calling Janet Holloway Miss Janet.
It makes Billy wonder if manners like that were beaten into him by a father like Neil.
He hopes not.
He likes Andrew too much for that.
Andrew hovered around while Billy swung himself out of his cot.
He changed out the bandana over his mouth and nose.
Most of them slept fully dressed, even with their shoes and socks still firmly on their feet.
You had to be ready to go at the slightest sound of Bad in this place.
Plus, everything was so goddamn dirty, what’s a little mud in the sheets in the grand scheme of things? And the rancid rotting smell of the Upside Down did wonders to cover the smell of body odor.
Billy followed Andrew down the L-shaped hallway, to the sitting room where he found Janet and Heather huddled together on one couch, the little one between them.
“Apparently something happened on the run last night.”
Billy’s blood ran cold. He couldn’t make out Janet’s expression under her face covering. The little one got up from his spot on the couch, standing in Billy’s shadow. He liked to do that. Billy figured he felt safe behind someone so much bigger and stronger than him. Someone with a big fuckin’ weapon that was never too far away.
“Who’d we lose?”
“No one. Everyone’s okay. Hopper just called all of us for a discussion, then went to the basement.”
The basement was Hopper’s domain with his little chunk of the crew.
He had found some busted up H.A.M. radio from somewhere he refused to explain, and spent all the time he wasn’t watching over his shoulder for threats or gathering supplies from smashed grocery stores, trying to fix it up, tuning it to different crackling stations, and yelling into it.
El. El, I need you to copy if you can hear me. El!
-
The pillow was a mess of blood the next morning.
It was congealed and cracked and tacky against his face and made the pillowcase stick to his cheek and his bloody upper lip in a way that kinda made Steve wanna puke a little bit.
His nose had bled in the night.
He never got nosebleeds.
Unless he used his power.
And that dream.
That blank void space and that mucky scraggly Billy lookin’ like the hunky star of some apocalypse movie.
Wait.
Blood forgotten, smeared on his face and neck, Steve tossed himself towards the phone on his nightstand, smacking his shoulder against the wooden corner and tumbling to the floor, his legs still tangled in his sheets on the bed.
He couldn’t deal with anything, snatching the phone up and punching in the only number that was grinding through his head.
“ Pick up pick up pick up pick up pick up, ” he muttered into the receiver.
His upper body was still flopped over to the plush carpet, legs twitching and shaking on the bed with his anxiety.
He’s had some massive fucking realizations and he needs backup.
“This is the Byers.”
“Put El on the phone.”
-
“Oh. Steve’s covered in blood again. The Upside Down must really be back,” Dustin said in complete monotone as Steve opened the door.
Steve couldn’t give less of a fuck right now.
He felt like he was on the verge of a major breakthrough, all coming in the neat package of a major breakdown.
He felt manic and shaky and so what if he forgot he was covered in the aftermath of a superpower-nosebleed-explosion?
“Shut up. Just get in.”
El had rallied the old troops from St. Paul, calling everyone at the ass-crack o’fuck in the morning and saying something about catching some weird Hawkins vibes all the way from Minnesota.
It was a fucking weak excuse, but explaining the whole Steve situation was just not really in the cards today.
He’s got an agenda and they need to stick to it.
Robin said she’d gather Max on the way to Steve’s place, and Nancy was probably hauling Mike and Lucas over faster than a speeding gun or whatever that expression is, so all Steve had to do was get his story straight.
“And maybe you should think about putting on a clean shirt? At the very least. I’d say, maybe just start over. Take a shower. Powerwash your face, even.”
“When the fuck did you become sarcastic ?”
“Right after you became friends with the coolest chick on the planet and then decided you’re too good for her.”
“ Chick. Don’t call Robin a chick. And I’ve told you, we’re just friends. I’m not too good for her.”
Really, Steve thought she was too good for him.
Well, that, and there’s the whole part where she’s super totally not into guys at all.
“So, what’s this all about, anyway? Mike said on the phone that El called him and left a really cryptic message.”
“Look. She called me to explain and ask if everyone could meet here,” Steve lied. “I’ll give you guys a recap once the rest of the gang shows.”
“But she thinks there’s something going on with the Upside Down? Again ?”
“I think she knows there’s something going on with the Upside Down.”
The more Steve sat with the memory of how Billy looked in that dream, the more he was certain of where he was.
Billy had been ratty. His normally perfect hair was long and limp, greasy on top and matted around his face. He was sporting a patchy beard, nothing like the fuckin’ pornstache the guy had been rocking all last summer.
And he was filthy. Covered in grime and dirt, and Steve’s sure if he’d looked harder, he would’ve seen traces of that viscous black goo that only meant bad news.
There was a squeal of tires, an alarm signaling the arrival of Nancy in her mother’s station wagon, toting her brother and Lucas.
“I’m in this now, Lucas Sinclair!” came Erica’s voice from the entryway.
Steve was tapping his foot impatiently.
“Erica, you accidentally found out about all this!”
“So did you!”
The Sinclair siblings’ bickering was only cut by the sound of the Wheeler siblings snapping at one another in turn.
“Am I the only one that thinks it doesn’t make sense to meet up this early? El and Will are like, seven hours away!”
“Mike! It doesn’t matter. We all have to talk and figure out what’s going on.”
The sounds of arguments all quieted abruptly as the four people rounded the corner and caught sight of Steve.
“Oh, Jesus. Who kicked your ass this time?” Mike snipped at Steve.
Oh, yeah. He keeps forgetting he’s covered in his own nose blood.
“What? It’s nothing. I kicked my own ass. Just take a seat.”
“I told you to-”
Steve didn’t wanna hear it.
He loves all these people, but his head kinda felt like it was full of mushy jelly and runny pudding and all the loud talking wasn’t doing much to help.
He stepped out onto the porch, snagging the pack of cigarettes he kept stowed in the flower box next to the door.
It took two to finally tame his nerves any.
Sitting there with all the people in his house waiting for an explanation, he kinda felt like his haphazard plan was shit and going to fall through immediately.
Just tell them El called. Tell them she saw Billy in the nowhere place and she thinks he’s alive. Easy as pie.
The tell-tale sound of a skateboard making its way closer and closer announced Max before he saw her.
Robin was pedaling next to her, helmet lopsided on her head and not buckled underneath her chin.
They were talking animatedly to one another, their laughter dying as soon as they saw Steve waiting for them.
“Fuck. So this is real.”
“Why does everyone think I got the shit beat outta me?”
“Your ass gets creamed every time some spooky shit goes down in this place, Harrington,” Max informed him.
She was a little Billy replica, all the way down to the way the corner of her mouth twitched up when she said his name.
It would’ve been sad. The way she tried to become her brother after losing him so violently last summer.
But something like relief settled into his bones, strong and real and wait ‘til I tell her Billy’s not dead and he was laughing. Curling in on himself cackling so hard his stomach had already begun to get sore
“Fuck. He’s lost it,” Robin sighed, ditching her bike next to Dustin’s and heaving Steve up, both hands underneath his armpits.
-
Nobody dared speak.
“And you’re sure? You’re positive you heard one of those things?”
Janet had her arms twisted over her chest, her jaw tight as she watched Hopper’s every move.
“It’s not really a sound you forget.”
Billy’s hand was shaking, he was gripping the ax so hard.
“So, we’re fucked,” Angela said harshly. Her cold voice sent ice down Billy’s spine. “If those things are back, we don’t stand a fucking chance.”
Hopper scrubbed his hand over his brow, sighing through the cloth over his mouth and nose.
“It just means I have to try harder. I can get to El, I know I can.”
Hopper said that a lot. But he never explained what getting to El meant.
Heather had explained she met El once, but she said it was weird and she only saw her like some kind of shadow, a figment in this dark empty place. Somewhere as cold and broken as the Upside Down felt.
The little one was leaned up against Billy, his left hand balled in the edge of Billy’s leather jacket. He stood like that a lot. It was grounding for Billy. Kinda like holding Max’s hand when she was young and still thought he was the coolest person she’d ever met.
“But, you only heard something, right? So it very well could be nothing.” Timothy was good at keeping mediator. He always kept a level head and talked slowly and calmly. They needed someone like him in this nightmare.
“They make this noise. This kind of wet chirping. Like this gurgle that just sounds like they’re watching you, ready to pounce out at any time, shrieking and attacking. It’s not a sound you forget.” Hopper had this horrible haunted look on his face, and Billy fucking believed him.
“Then we up nightwatch. Stick together,” Billy offered. He never usually piped up with strategy, but that’s the best he’s got, and frankly, he thinks it’s the only way they’d all be able to make it through.
“Exactly. We move in a pack now. Keep track of everyone together, and stay aware of what’s around us. I think we should do a major run and then lock up for a few days to see what goes down.”
Hopper leaned back in the ratty armchair he was taking up, looking around to see if anyone challenged his ideas.
Billy had given up his alpha male attitude the second Hopper yanked his upper arm and nearly screamed at him, asking Billy if he was ‘one of the flayed’ all while aggressively checking him over for injuries.
First time any of Neil’s lessons actually sunk in.
Respect and responsibility.
If that fucker could see Billy now, doing nothing but respecting authority and taking responsibility for all these peoples’ lives.
“We should rest up. Take a run tonight. Get a lay of the land,” Timothy said with an air of finality. Nobody argued.
Hopper nodded.
Everyone broke out from the Harringtons’ living room, milling around to get prepared for tonight’s run. Taking stock of what they needed to keep going for the next few days.
Billy was itching to slide back into his cot and try to seek out that space if he can. The empty space where Harrington and that warm feeling of safe existed.
The little one stayed clinging to his jacket, and Billy took a loose hold of his wrist, trying to provide some kind of basic comfort to the tiny kid.
“You wanna go raid the cabinet?” The kid stared up at Billy with big eyes. Billy could never tell what color they were in the gloom. He thinks maybe green.
The cabinet was a large door, built into the wall of the sitting room, and clearly where the Harringtons kept their games.
They had these excruciating couple thousand-piece puzzles, the pictures peeling and faded on the pieces. They had Trivial Pursuit and backgammon, and all kindsa shit.
The little one went and pulled out the checkers board. That was the only game Billy knew how to play anyhow.
He and Max used to sit for hours, playing with this dinosaur-themed checker game Max’s dad got for her one birthday.
It helped, playing a game. Helped pass the time. Help bait the anxiety.
Helped them all feel a little bit closer to human.
-
“I don’t. Get it.”
Apparently, Nancy was not the only one, if the blank stares Steve was receiving from around his living room were anything to go by.
“Yeah, why did she call you ?” Mike’s snitty tone was really grating on Steve’s fragile nerves.
“She said, she called to make sure everyone could come over here before she told you all to just show up this early on a Sunday morning and then she kinda explained what happened.”
Max was white as a sheet, tracking Steve like he was playing a horrible joke on her.
“And she saw Billy. Billy Hargrove .”
Steve nodded at Dustin.
“Why does she think he’s in the Upside Down?” Robin asked, perched on the coffee table, sitting closest to where he was standing nervously.
“She just knows .”
It was frustrating, trying to impart the seriousness of the situation without just spilling his guts.
He rubbed absentmindedly at the cigar burn on his wrist.
“I just don’t believe this. I talked to her three days ago, and she’s still having trouble with her powers. She can barely move a book, and hasn’t been able to get to the void since July, and you’re saying she accidentally saw Billy Hargrove, who we all saw murder a bunch of people and then get killed -”
“Shut up! He wasn’t himself!” Max shrieked out over Mike, the only time she’d even opened her mouth since Steve had mentioned her stepbrother’s name.
“Even if he is alive, El couldn’t have seen him! It doesn’t make sense!” Mike’s voice rose over Max’s, and Steve has a fucking headache and he’s over it.
“It was me! I had a dream. I went to the void. I saw Billy in the Upside Down. I called El to say she saw him.”
Everyone went dead silent, staring at him.
“Steve,” Robin began, searching his face.
It was like all the wind that had been filling up his sails, powering his energy ship, had suddenly quit blowing.
Steve was tired.
He sank to the floor, crossing his legs where he sat.
“I need you all to shut the fuck up for a moment and let me explain, because I only wanna say all this shit once.” He covered his bloody face with his hands. “I’m like El.”
That statement hung in the air for a moment.
And then there was a roar of noise.
“How could you keep this a secret?” Dustin shouted.
“Not in a million years !” Lucas decided. Erica yelled something back at him, vaguely defending Steve, which was nice.
“You mean you came from the lab?” Mike had a look on his face like he’d swallowed a particularly bitter lemon.
“Everybody, shut the fuck up!” Max roared, glowering at each person until they were silent again.
In all this Robin hadn’t said a word. She was pale, staring at Steve.
“Look, I don’t wanna go into it because it fucking sucks to think about,” Steve still hadn’t uncovered his face. “But yeah. I was in the lab. I got out because they decided I was a failed experiment. My mom worked at the lab and she took me and we pretended like the three of us moved here from Oklahoma and my dad told me never to tell anyone. And I haven’t. Didn’t even tell El. She recognized me from then. Don’t even know how, I left when she was like, three. Doesn’t matter. I’m a freaky lab kid and last night I fell asleep and saw Billy in that-what’d you call it? The void? Yeah, I saw him, and he’s covered in dirt and gross black Upside Down shit, and he’s fucking stuck there, and now we’re here.”
There was another silence.
Steve didn’t dare to look at any of them.
He didn’t want them to laugh in his face. Tell him he was making all this shit up and leave him alone to deal with Billy trapped somewhere else.
He wanted them to take his word for it. To quietly believe this crazy fucking shit of a story because the scared other feeling was back and clawing at his spine and making him want to burrow into the ground and find somewhere safe and secure and-
“Okay.”
Of course it was Robin.
It was always Robin.
Steve let himself look at her.
She was pale, but she was smiling at him.
“Just like that?”
“Just like that.”
Steve nodded once.
“Okay. Uh, great.”
“Wait, if you’re defective, no offense, then how did you see Billy?”
Steve stared at Max weighing his answer carefully.
“Because, well, the defective thing, that was all, I didn’t mean to, that was before I really understood what I could do. Don’t get me wrong, it really worked out, but it was an accident.”
“Spit it out, Sailor Man.”
“ Erica .”
Erica just rolled her eyes at Lucas.
“Okay. Uh, before I explain, just, just keep in mind that I have rules, and I don’t use my powers if I can avoid them, and I’d never use them to be a creep, but-”
“Steve!”
“Fine!” The words were right there, ready to tumble out of his mouth and ruin his life forever.
There was no going back after this.
The second they knew, everything would be different.
“I can feel other peoples’ emotions and, like, change them.”
Another silence.
“I don’t understand.”
Nancy was the last person he’d ever want to have this conversation with.
He knows what she’s thinking. He knows that the great anger brewing inside her is because she assumes he made her like him. Made her attracted to him.
Made her want him.
“I don’t use it like that. I would never, put something there that shouldn’t be there. It’s just, When someone feels something near me, I can tap into it. Let it become my own feelings. And then I just, change it. Just a little.” He cast around for a harmless example because so far, everyone was staring at him like a goddamn creep. “Robin!”
She startled slightly when he yelled at her.
“Okay, so Robin. I’d never, ever make you feel something not true to you. Like, I’d never make it so you were into me when you’re totally not, right?” He cast a glance at Nancy. “But, like, the other day, when you felt really shitty when I invited you over and you were studying, I just, I made it so you wouldn’t feel bad. I felt all this guilt you had for leaving me alone when you thought I was having a shitty day, and I made it so you didn’t feel guilty because you shouldn’t. That’s the kinda level I allow myself to work on.”
The look Robin was giving him was breaking his fucking heart.
Worse still, was the feeling of betrayal that began eating away at her.
“So, right now. You can tell what we’re all feeling?” Even Lucas, ever the level-headed one, couldn’t look him in the eye.
“I don’t want to. I don’t try to, but I can’t really avoid it. I just try to ignore it. But sometimes, sometimes if I bottle it all up for a while, it comes crashing out of me, and that’s when bad shit happens. If I don’t use it occasionally, it only wakes things worse, and I-”
“I can’t hear this.”
Robin’s anger crashed through Steve like a wave, nearly knocking him over. She stood, towering over him.
“When we were in that bathroom, all drugged out of our minds. I-” she sniffed, rage tears pooling in her eyes. Steve likes her eyes. So crystal blue. “Are we even really friends?”
Her last question was nothing more than a whisper.
And it made Steve wish he was never born.
He gaped at her like a dead fish.
“Rob, of course we are! I would never-”
“Because I hated you. And then one summer. Two whole months where we’re close enough that you can get all up in my brain, and suddenly I’m telling you shit I’ve never told anyone before.”
“It wasn’t, Robin I swear, that whole time, I never once used-”
She held up her hand, cutting him off.
A sob caught in his throat as she turned on her heel.
She slammed the door closed behind her.
Another fucking silence.
Steve couldn’t look anyone in the eye.
Their feelings were enough for him now, betrayal and anger and disappointment rushing into his lungs, drowning him. Choking him.
“You’ve used them on all of us.”
It wasn’t a question.
It was just a statement. The coldest he’s ever heard Dustin sound.
“I just want everyone to be happy.”
“Jesus, Steve. You realize that’s actually totally fucked up, right? You can’t just make us feel whatever you want,” Dustin bellowed at him, standing up like Robin had done, looking down at Steve where he sat pathetically on the floor.
And, when it’s put like that.
Sure.
It’s kinda fucked up.
But he’s only ever meddled in a way that’s good. He only ever tries to make his friends feel the positives. Hell, on the night of that stupid Snow Ball, he’d given Dustin enough self-confidence to make Madonna seem insecure.
All he does is try to help.
“All I do is try to help.”
More fucking silence.
Steve was so goddamn sick of silence. All he had was silence. He had the nothing, empty quiet. And he didn’t want it from the people who were supposed to make his life loud.
“El won’t be here until later tonight. I think we should just meet up then.”
Steve buried his head in his hands, biting back sobs as the small group filtered out of his house.
This is why he had wanted to take this secret with him to death.
He told everyone who he really is, and now they all hate him, and he’s completely alone, and wherever Billy is he’s fucking scared and-
“Steve?”
Max’s voice was small, mirroring the way she was curled in on herself in the plush armchair near the wall.
“Do you really think Billy’s alive?”
Steve nodded at her, desperately begging her to stay. To help him.
“I know he is.”
“I have an idea.”
-
He doesn’t remember falling asleep.
Doesn’t remember much of anything in this place.
He studied the water lapping at his muddy boots, dragging his toes through it to make the water wave and ripple.
It didn’t make a sound.
“I want to help.”
Billy knew Steve was there even before he spoke.
Something about the warmth he brought to the void place.
The safety.
“Don’t know if you can.”
Steve’s lips twitched into a ghost of a smile at that. His face was covered in blood, dried and flaking away from his skin, painted all the way down his face and neck, some staining the collar of his shirt.
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me.”
“That happens when the only interactions you have with a guy are to beat his ass.”
Steve cracked a real smile at that. Something big and bright that made Billy’s gut twist in a way he didn’t quite like.
“You’re forgetting all those other times we spent together. You’re not very subtle, you know.”
Yeah, Billy knows.
Mostly because he wasn’t trying to be subtle.
He had talked to Steve about his bitchy ex while they both had their dicks out in the shower. He was trying to be very much un-subtle.
“Wasn’t trying to be.”
“I know.”
Oh.
Steve knows.
And all he had done was stare blankly at Billy.
Nice.
“I need to know where you are.”
“Why?”
“Because I can help.”
Billy just blinked at Steve.
“Do you know El?”
Something funny happened to Steve’s face. He kind of gave a little smile that flickered into a frown and landed on something a little pinched and awkward.
“Yeah. How do you know her?”
“Hopper keeps saying he needs to get to her. None of us know what he’s talking about.”
And with that, Steve’s eyes went huge, and his jaw dropped. The water at Billy’s ankles sloshed quietly.
“Hopper’s there? Chief Hopper? Jim Hopper is there?”
“Jesus, yeah. Been here since we all woke up.”
Steve acted like Billy had told him that Farrah Fawcett herself was on her way to shave his head.
Meaning, he looked struck fucking dumb.
“I’m gonna need you to explain.”
“I don’t know. Don’t remember much. Crashed my car on one of your shitty backwoods roads, and then everything is just, kinda, gone. I woke up in this shithole version of the library and Hopper found me here and we’ve kinda set up camp.”
Billy shrugged lamely. Something was dripping, he could hear the sound of it far behind him.
“There’s more of you? How many?”
“Not as many as there should be.”
Steve’s mouth pinched, and his big droopy eyes went all sweet and sad.
“Where are you? Where’s the camp?”
Billy was suddenly embarrassed. There was a sound like a stream flowing over rocks.
What’s he supposed to say? The hellscape skeleton of your house oh and by the way all your stuff is here and I slept in your bed once because I was scared and sad.
“Someone’s house. Don’t know whose.”
Steve huffed some air out of his nostrils, his mouth pinching again.
Billy hadn’t realized someone could make so many different expressions just by pursing their lips in different ways.
“Find out. We’re coming to get you.”
A crash of a wave, and Billy was back in hell.
-
Steve sucked in lungfuls of air, tossing the towel that had been covering his eyes to the ground.
“You saw him.”
Max was sitting in front of him, the t.v. playing static behind her.
“Yeah. He’s okay. I mean, he’s really gross. Like, he’s-sorry. He’s okay.”
Max was still staring at him like she didn’t quite know how to proceed.
“But he’s in the Upside Down?”
“Yeah. And there’s others. He said Hopper’s there, that he’s been trying to contact El.”
“Wait, Hopper? He’s alive?”
“Billy said all of the flayed woke up after the Fourth of July in the Upside Down. He doesn’t know anything that happened in this world, and Hopper was there and they’ve set up, like, some kind of camp, or whatever. He said they’re in someone’s house. He doesn’t know who.”
“ Fuck .”
Yeah, Steve agrees with that sentiment.
This whole thing was like, kind of a lot.
And deep inside him, those other feelings had yet to leave him alone all day.
There was some kind of disappointment knocking about in his brain.
He knows it’s Billy.
All of those other feelings, it’s whatever Billy is feeling right that minute wherever he is.
And it only happens when Steve is-
“Max, he’s here.”
She whipped around behind her, staring at the front door like Billy could waltz through it at any moment.
“No, no not here, here .” She clearly didn’t understand. He used the towel to wipe the fresh blood from his upper lip, still having yet to clean himself up any. “The camp, the safeplace, it’s here. They’ve set up in my house!”
It felt like a revelation on par with the greatest inventions. Steve felt like the scientist that landed the man on the moon or the very first person to melt cheese onto fries.
A genius.
“So, he’s, I mean, he could be, just, here .” She looked over the room wistfully, and Steve knew how she felt. Like she wanted to pierce her hands into thin air, tearing a hole in between the two worlds and ripping Billy straight outta hell.
(Really, she just filled him with a wave of fierce determination, but Steve likes to take poetic license on other people’s feelings sometimes.)
“And you can feel him.”
“Yeah.”
“Is he, okay?”
And he knows this question.
Not the okay he assured her of when he first saw Billy. Soothing that he wasn’t missing any internal organs or possessed by any monsters.
She wants to know if he’s held it together.
“He’s scared. He’s always scared. But he’s really fucking stubborn, and he- I don’t know why he feels these things, but sometimes he gets kinda sad. Almost like he’s lost something, and sometimes, it feels like he’s caught fire, and his insides are just going up in flame and he gets overwhelmed by them. And sometimes he feels-” He hadn’t meant to continue.
“Tell me.”
He’s pretty sure Max knew what he was going to say next.
She just wanted it confirmed.
“Hopeless. Sometimes he feels hopeless.”
She sniffed, her eyes shining as she looked anywhere that wasn’t Steve.
“But, we know now. He doesn’t have to be hopeless anymore. We’ll find a way in, and we’ll get him out.”
He didn’t want to manipulate her.
He didn’t want to cross the boundaries everyone clearly thought he already had.
But he was positive he would find a way to Billy. He was positive he would get him out and get him home.
He sent a wave of that determination and hope and conviction to her.
“Yeah. We’ll get him.”
-
“Hopper, man, some funky shit is going down.”
Hopper whirled around quickly, halfway to his feet and asking who's been hurt before Billy raised both hands, acting like he was calming an anxious horse.
“Nah, sorry, shoulda worded that better. I just mean, something’s happened to me. With me, maybe. I don’t know. Just hear me out. This shit’s gonna sound, insane.”
Hopper didn’t say anything as Billy explained, beginning with that night when the wall shattered next to his head, and ending with his most recent trip to the void place.
Billy shrugged lamely when he finished explaining.
“So, Harrington, huh? Never woulda guessed he was like her. You sure you didn’t see a little girl anywhere in the blank place?”
“No. It was just us. Both times.”
Hopper leaned back in his chair, scratching a hand through his thick beard.
“The first time one of the demogorgons showed up on our side was behind Steve’s house. Took Will Byers from his shed. They live some few miles away. Second time was in Harrington’s backyard. Took Barbara Holland.” Hopper sighed, looking in the direction of the busted radio. Billy could more or less see the cogs turning in his head. “If you see him again, tell him where we are. Tell him I think the walls are thinnest here. That maybe he and El could tear through. Better yet, tell him to find me if he can.”
He clapped Billy on the shoulder, looking right at him in that way he did sometimes. It always made Billy feel like a little kid.
“Thank you, kid. You might’ve just saved us.”
Billy felt awkward and didn’t really know what to do with his face. Thankfully, Hopper turned away from him, cutting the moment short and moving back to fiddling with the old radio.
Billy ducked his way up and back to the furthest bedroom on the ground floor, taking a seat on his low cot and digging his palms into his eyes.
He didn’t know how the void happened. If he could only get there in his sleep, or if it was Steve’s doing somehow.
“C’mon, Steve. Where are you? Come find me, Pretty Boy. We gotta talk.”
When he moved his hands away, he was in that blank place.
Billy was taken aback a bit, thinking somehow he had created the place around him.
Until he saw Steve, standing nervously and staring at Billy.
“I felt you. What’s wrong?”
“Sorry, you felt me? What in the fuck’s that supposed to mean.”
“Don’t worry about it. What happened? Are you guys okay?”
Steve wasn’t covered in blood anymore.
In fact, he looked freshly showered, his hair slightly damp and soft-looking without product.
It’s how he always looked right after having a post-practice shower. Clean and warm. Soft and inviting.
“I talked to Hopper. He told me to give you a message.”
Steve’s eyes lit up, and he took a step towards Billy, the water rippling where his foot disturbed the surface.
“He said, well. He told me where we are. Apparently, we’re at your place.” Billy tried to smirk a little, act like this was brand new information to him.
“Yeah. I gathered.”
“He thinks the walls are thinnest at your place. Said that maybe you and El could tear through easily. That mean anything to you?”
Steve nodded so hard his bangs flopped right into his eyes.
He pushed his hair out of his face, tucking some behind his ear. Billy tracked the movement.
“We’re going to try tonight. Maybe around six. Can you guys be ready by then?”
“We don’t have any way to track time around here. Don’t even know if it’s day or night, really.”
Steve bit his soft bottom lip, looking at Billy like he wanted to cry for him.
“Then I’ll come and get you before. Warn you when we’re about to start. Make sure everyone stays close. I don’t know how long we’ll be able to keep it sustained, and we want to get everyone out if we can.”
“Steve, man, what in the fuck is going on? I’ve been shut up in this place for, for I don’t even know how long, and all of a sudden, you just start showing up in my head and telling me that you’re gonna take point on this big fuckin’ rescue mission.”
Billy doesn’t want to admit it to anyone, least of all Steve Harrington, but he’s scared, and confused, and he genuinely wishes that he had died in that library instead of waking up.
“I’ll explain it when you get back.”
And Steve smiled at him and the corners of his eyes crinkled and Billy didn’t quite feel like he wanted to die anymore.
-
“Where are they?”
El didn’t even say hello when she pushed Steve’s front door open, just made straight for Max and Steve in the sitting room.
“They’re all being dicks,” was Max’s answer. “Steve told us about how you two know each other, and everyone kinda freaked.”
“I mean, it’s pretty freaky.”
“Yeah, sure, but they didn’t need to be such shitbirds about it.”
Somewhere between feeling harshly angry at Steve and his powers and hearing her brother’s voice crackle through the television speaker, Max had pretty much ensconced Steve as her sidekick.
Which he didn’t mind in the least.
It was kinda odd seeing the Byers in his house.
Jonathan looked. Exactly the same.
Like literally. His hair had grown out since his mother had taken a pair of scissors and a bowl to it last summer, and he looked just like the Hawkins Jonathan Steve was used to.
It was kinda nice.
At least one thing hasn’t changed.
Especially because Will is pretty much unrecognizable.
He had shot up, growing until he could nearly look Steve in the eye. And thank God, he must've followed Jonathan’s footsteps and stopped letting Joyce cut his hair.
It was longer, adn shaggier, but it made him look so grown up.
Nearly as grownup as El, her hair nearly down to her shoulder blades, the top of her head coming up on Steve’s chin, showing off the signs of her own growth spurt.
Even Joyce was sporting a new look. Longer hair with bangs that were swept off her face.
She gave Steve a comforting hug, and those were just the same.
Unease filled the room.
Nobody knew what they were walking into. El had to have given them the basics, and Steve figures she explained some on the long drive back to town, but there had been even more developments since the last they had spoken this morning.
Steve sifted through the borderline panic of Max and the Byers, clinging onto the fierce calm that El was radiating. Probably for his benefit more than her own actual experience.
“I know where Billy is. We talked. I have an idea.” He took a deep breath, bracing himself for the feelings. “Hopper’s alive.”
It took a second.
El’s carefully maintained calm wavered for a moment.
And then it crashed down.
Disbelief, relief, denial, anger, hope, joy.
Everything a person could possibly feel at once poured out of El and Joyce both, nearly knocking Steve off his feet with the sheer velocity of the emotions.
“Saw him?”
“No. But Billy mentioned him. He said he’s been trying to get to you.”
El’s eyes filled with tears, and Steve could feel the satisfaction, the pride, welling up in her that Hopper was still thinking of her. That he was trying to reach out.
“My powers,” she trailed off.
“Yeah. I know. But, he said, well, he told Billy to tell me, he thinks the walls are thinnest here. Maybe in the woods outback. He thinks we can do it.”
Sorry,” Joyce interrupted. She had gathered herself somewhat, but her feelings were still shaky.
She always felt like she was trembling emotionally. Joyce felt everything nearly as viscerally as Billy did.
“I think we’re not on the same page. Steve, you spoke to Billy? El said she sensed him.”
“Steve is like me. From Papa.”
“You mean, from the lab?” Jonathan clarified.
Everyone was staring at Steve again and he felt like burrowing a hole right through the floor and hiding underground forever.
“Yeah, I got out when I was a kid. My parents were pretty hell-bent on hiding it from everyone. But. You know. Cat’s outta the bag now. But yes, it was me who saw Billy. He’s in the Upside Down. A bunch of people are. Including Hopper. It sounds like they were all taken and the flayed people out here were like, fake. Like evil twin versions.”
Sure, it’s a shitty explanation.
It’s the best he can do, okay? Leave him alone.
“So, what’s his plan, then?”
That’s the good thing about the Byers, though. They get the whole, priority thing. Now’s not the time to focus on shit like Steve’s fake life. Not when the Upside Down is concerned.
“Billy didn’t say much. Just that he thinks maybe El and I could like, band together to open it. I don’t really know how, I mean, I haven’t thought about it much, I just spoke to him, but that's the idea. I told him I would meet him in the void or whatever before we go so he can gather everyone and get ready.”
“So, is it just us?” Will asked quietly, biting the inside of his cheek. He was disappointed. His friends not being where they were needed. Not being there to see him for the first time since his family moved away months ago.
Steve shrugged.
He was battling his own disappointment and hurt at everyone ditching him.
“No. Let’s start calling. We need to stick together for this one. Billy hasn’t said anything about how bad the Upside Down has been, and we need to be ready to fight off anything that tries to get through.”
“Max is right. They should be here.” Will was already making his way to the phone placed on the side table. “They need to be here.”
Jonathan caught Steve’s eye, jerking his head slightly to the hallway.
Steve followed him, already knowing the line of questioning that was about to hit him.
“I knew you called El. I picked up this morning. Now the story makes a lot more sense, I guess.”
“Yeah. I’ve been getting this weird feeling for a couple months, but I finally put it all together. Probably would’ve happened faster it is was El.”
“I don’t know. She’s been struggling a lot. She practices every day, but,” he sighed” I don’t know if she’s strong enough to make this work.”
He’s worried, adn scared, and has that exact same tremble-feeling that his mother does.
“I know. I just don’t think we can leave them any longer. Billy said they’ve already lost people. I don’t know what it’s been like for them, but they’ve been stuck for fucking months, and-”
This time, it hit him so hard he really did blackout.
His vision clouded around him, and his whole body burned with the raging fear inside of him.
He could hear something, could hear someone screaming, adn something, something that sounded horrible, and so very very like a-
-
“Demogorgon!”
It’s like it had come out of nowhere.
This towering figure, long and thin in all the wrong fucking ways.
And the sound. Billy realized what Hopper meant about how it’s not something you forget.
They were in some form of a ready position.
Billy among the front of the group, holding his ax he had never let go of in the first place.
His heart was pounding.
We’ll be out soon. We’ll be out soon.
He didn’t believe it.
How could he?
How the fuck is Steve Harrington going to get them out of the worst place ever? No offense to him or anything, but the guy could barely make a goddamn milkshake without spilling something on the sticky tile floor of Scoops Ahoy! and now, Billy’s life is in this guy’s hands while he stares into the jaws of a monster that looks like it stepped right out of H.P. Lovecraft’s wettest dreams.
It’s not like this is the first time he’s had this realization, but he is in way over his fucking head.
“Steve,” Billy grumbled to himself through gritted teeth. “If you can hear me, get us the fuck outta here.”
The thing ahead of them wasn’t moving. It stood in the line of the trees behind Steve’s house.
It was staring down the clump of people on the other side of the backyard.
The air was still.
Billy’s ears were ringing.
He stared the thing down.
Its long fingers twitched.
Someone screamed.
And the thing charged.
It roared like nothing Billy had ever heard before. A shriek that seemed to vibrate Billy’s bones and tremble the earth underneath his feet.
It charged.
Sprinting forward on long thin legs, it loped with a grace that turned Billy’s stomach and made his knees wobble and threaten to give out.
Plant your feet.
It rang through his head, Steve’s voice from, some time Billy couldn’t remember. Or maybe Steve was just the little voice that commanded his bravery now.
Either way, he dug the balls of his feet into the cracked ground, and waited.
Don’t stop fighting.
He swung.
The ax clocked right into the side of the thing, barely cutting into its thick leathery skin, but it slowed it down.
Well, actually.
It made it change course from attacking the group as a whole, to honing in on Billy.
Which was less than awesome.
Billy wrenched the ax out of its tough body, thick, sticky black goo connecting the ax with its entry point as he drew it away.
He swung again, nearly hitting the same place.
The thing cried out, roaring over the sound of screaming and gunshots.
Hopper had his rifle trained on the flowered head of the one Billy was furiously chopping into like a tree.
There were two more, two he hadn’t noticed in his preoccupation with the one in front of him.
He didn’t know who was who. Which gunshot belonged to which gun, which shriek belonged to which animal.
He didn’t know if the cries of pain were from the awful beasts or the people in his camp. He was hoping the former.
He swung again. There was a sickening sound of the metal blade connecting with something solid. Something like bone.
Hopper shot it, once, twice in the head.
It was whining, making a high-pitched noise as it staggered about.
One last blow to the side of the thing, and it was finished.
The monster flopped onto the ground, dark liquid oozing out of it, its body nearly split in half where Billy had hammered it with his ax. A great gaping wound that showed sticky dark entrails.
Billy turned.
His brain was working in slow motion as he charged into the battle still raging.
He didn’t know how many of the things had arrived.
All he knew was taking them out.
His arms were sore from the force he was putting into each blow with his ax. His muscles threatened to give out at any moment.
Drive them back. We’re coming.
The thought was shoved into his head. He didn’t know where it came from but he believed it.
“Help is on the way!” He shouted to no one and everyone.
He had taken down two more demogorgons with the help of the others. One was missing its body, a petal head lolling on the ground, getting trampled on in the fight.
-
Steve had felt the demogorgon before Billy saw it.
It was an odd feeling, almost like it was a black hole sucking up everything he thought and felt before he could cling onto it.
It made him feel cold, and empty, and just like the Upside Down felt.
“We don’t have time!”
El was insisting on contacting the others. She was livid with them for abandoning Steve, but things were taking a turn for the small group trapped in that hellscape.
“Steve’s right. If there’s a demogorgon there, that means the Mind Flayer has gotten some strength back, wherever he is.”
Steve nodded at Will gratefully.
“But, what’s the idea? You two open the gate. Then what? We wait for those things to come through to our side?” Jonathan asked, kinda harshly, if you ask Steve.
Steve rubbed his eyes, his fists pressing against them so hard he was seeing odd shapes.
“No. I go through. I get them. I bring them back.” His head was a fucking mess. Billy was all over the place. Fear, desperation, and a horrible calm that only came when things looked like the end. Plant your feet, he thought, trying to get his feelings to Billy through the thin dimensional wall. Don’t stop fighting. “For the past few days, all I’ve been able to feel is somebody else’s fucking fear and this stupid stupid stubbornness and I know it’s Billy, and I know he’s in trouble. Like right now. The demogorgons are coming for them, and he’s so scared. He’s so fucking scared and he thinks he’s gonna die, and he’s trapped .”
He looked at each person individually, glaring at them all in the eye.
“We don’t have time.”
So it was decided.
He brought El outside, and stared into the shimmering water of the pool.
The pool where a demon came out and dragged Barbara to her death.
It gave him the fucking creeps. Well, it more gave him the severe anxiety, but there was something about it that made it seem like it was the best place to try and rip the fold between himself and Billy.
Drive them back. We’re coming.
He wanted Billy to have some hope. Something like a lifeline that would keep him fighting the monsters.
He had wrenched his nail bat out of the wall it was still planted in from a few nights ago, and stood next to El, ready to try.
“To be honest, I don’t know how to help you.” It was the only thing that scared him about this plan. “I don’t have the same powers as you. The telekin-the moving stuff around. I don’t know how to open this.”
She looked at him thoughtfully.
“In Chicago. Kali. When I’m angry my powers are better,” she took his hand. “Make me angry.”
Steve closed his eyes.
He tried to push Billy to the side, clinging onto the first bit of El he could sense.
Her anger was like a melted core running through her. Driving her in a lot of ways.
He grabbed onto it.
Papa. Everything he did to your mama. Being locked in isolation. Fights with Hopper. Being trapped in the cabin. Feeling alone and not knowing how to fix it. New kids at school being mean. Techs in the lab that treated us like rats. The smell of skin burning. Parents that called you a freak.
He didn’t know when he had stopped using El’s ready-made rage, and began siphoning his own straight into the beating heart of her fury.
His gut began to feel white-hot, and he could feel the blood dripping down his lip.
Lying to everyone. Being abandoned for the truth. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.
Steve was livid.
He’s never felt an emotion consume him like this. Felt one feeling take over so completely it’s like there was nothing else in the world.
He opened his eyes.
There was blood flowing steadily from El’s nose, and he knew his was doing the same.
He could feel his heart pounding against his ribs, his body going into overdrive to divert all of his energy to his powers.
The rift glowed red through the clear pool water, splitting open like a seam on a well-worn shirt.
The burn on his arm ached, and he pushed into it.
He remembered being held down on his father’s desk. Remembers the cigar being forced against his skin, bubbling up and disfiguring the tattoo beyond recognition.
He remembers his father, this is for your own good, Steven. You’ll tell everyone you had an accident. People won’t question a burn like they will a tattoo.
Like no one would take one look at the quarter-sized mark and know what would make it.
He remembers getting the tattoo.
It was nearly the same process.
He was strapped down in a chair, his screams going ignored as the needle drove into his skin over and over, leaving a neat black number behind.
001
Number One.
The first in a series of children bred for something more, and beaten into acceptance.
His head felt like it could explode. He didn’t know what was going on around him, was barely aware of El’s sweaty hand in his, and the bright red light coming from the cracked bottom of the pool.
It was open.
Number One took a deep breath, and dived into the pool.
-
It was the little one that noticed it.
Billy had been trying to yell at him to get back inside, to keep himself out of harm’s way.
They had killed six demogorgons, and more were certainly coming.
The trees in the forest were rustling in a way they never did on their own.
The little one was pointing frantically, his eyes wide and scared.
Billy turned, and his blood ran cold.
Something was moving in the pool.
It was making the thick non-water slosh around dangerously, the dark liquid lapping over the sides and staining the concrete.
There were vines crisscrossing over the surface of the liquid, and Billy approached it carefully, hoping whatever was coming out would be trapped underneath them.
“This is the last fucking thing we need,” Hopper gritted out, cocking his rifle and aiming at the sludge.
And then Billy’s head felt like it had been cracked open.
He was blinded with pain and rage and
Help me, Hargrove!
He started swinging his ax wildly at the vines. Trying to break them apart enough for a body to fit through.
His heart thundered in his chest, and he dropped to his knees, ripping at the slimy black tendrils.
He shoved his left arm in.
It was like dousing his arm in ice. Like the liquid was made from the purest essence of cold.
He searched frantically with his hand, finding something solid and yanking with all his strength.
He had to put both arms in, grabbing hold of whatever he could, using his body weight as leverage to extract Steve from the cold.
He was limp when Billy finally got him out, but breathing heavily.
He opened his eyes, wiping his face free of the goop and blood covering him, and grinned at Billy.
“Told’ya we would get you out.”
They shepherd him inside, most of the gang speechless and struck dumb from the events of the past while.
Steve was given a change of almost clean clothes, and allowed to use some of their bottled water ration to clean the freezing black fluid from himself.
He wasted little time, and was down in the Upside Down version of his living room with everyone else.
“We can’t be long. El had to use a lot of strength to open it, but she’ll need her strength to close it, too.”
Nobody knew what in the fuck Steve was going on about.
Nobody but Hopper, that is.
He still had disgusting pool sludge all over his front from when he pulled Steve into a tight hug when he had gotten his bearings back from his journey through the rift.
“We can’t send people through that shit. It took all of Billy’s muscle to get you outta there.”
“So we drain it,” Steve insisted. “My parents drain it sometimes, I know how to do it.”
“I’ll keep watch. Make sure nothing tries to make itself known.”
Billy had barely wiped himself off.
He didn’t care anymore about how freezing that shit was, he just wanted to surge forward, and get back the fuck home.
Hopper studied them both.
“Bring weapons. Yell if you need help.”
Billy nodded once, and turned on his heel, following Steve out the back door.
Steve led him to a wooden shed on the side of the house. Billy had to clear the vines away from it before Steve could pry open the doors.
It was full of pool equipment, and it didn’t take long for Steve to locate a large grubby pump. He knocked it against the wall of the shed until the filter attachment clattered off, leaving bigger openings for the sludge to, hopefully, run through.
“Shit. This thing is electric. You got electricity?”
It was the first time Steve had really gotten a good look at Steve since being in the Upside Down.
He looked exactly as he had in the void place. His hair had a lot more disgusting black fluid in it, and he overall looked kinda shitty with the flecks of grime and blood on his face, but he looked bright. Alive. Strong.
“How did you do it? Take me to that place. Figure out we were here.”
Steve flushed. Billy had become overly aware that his face was completely covered under his bandana. Steve should cover his face.
He drew another one of his back pocket, and, he didn’t know why, but he tied it around Steve’s face.
Seriously, he could’ve just handed it to the guy and called it good there. But no. He had to set his ax on the ground, propped against his leg, wrap his arms around Steve’s shoulders, and tie the bandana like this was some intricate ritual.
All while Steve just stared at him with those fuckin’ eyes of his.
It’s a long story.” Billy could barely hear Steve speak through the dirty cloth now covering his mouth and nose. “I’ll tell you when we’re back. When we’re safe.”
“I’m holding you to that, Harrington. Can’t have a guy poking around my dreams and shouting in my head without knowing his intentions.”
It was as close to flirting as Billy dared right now.
Right before they tried to journey between worlds.
“Good to know you heard me. I was trying to give you something of a pep talk.”
“Well, it worked. I would’ve just put my arms out and let those things rip me to shreds if I hadn’t have known.”
Billy didn’t know what Steve’s face was doing behind the cloth, but his eyes dropped, and Billy imagined that little cinch of his mouth that he had noticed Steve doing so much in that void place.
-
Billy meant it as a joke.
He really did.
And the Billy that was torn to bits in the mall wasn’t this Billy. Wasn’t the real Billy that was made out of real Billy materials and real Billy personality.
But it still made Steve feel queasy, thinking about his arms spread wide, black goop pouring out of his mouth and nose as the Mind Flayer decimated him.
“We’ve got a lot to talk about, Billy. Just, not now.”
And Steve turned off, hauling the pump back to the pool and taking calming breaths.
The pump sank without much effort, like there was some kind of gravitational pull at the bottom of the pool.
Steve had connected the thickest hose he could find, adn sent Billy off with the extension cord to find an outlet that didn’t spark and threaten fire.
Before no time, the pump was humming, and pushing black slime through the hose and onto the dead grass.
They didn’t need to get it all out, just as much as they could shove everyone through.
Steve closed his eyes, trying to reach El like he had Billy.
We had a hold up. Shouldn’t be long.
He could feel her on the other side.
She promised she would stay close enough to the rift that Steve could get in touch with her.
He could feel something slither down his spine, a wordless confirmation from her.
The liquid in the pool was slowly edging down, leaving a stain on the once-white walls of the pool.
“Gather everyone up. Tell ‘em to meet out here. Tell ‘em to leave it all behind.”
Billy was still staring at the edge of the forest when he commanded Steve.
It was odd, being in his house that’s not his house.
Everything was so. Wrong.
From the way the house seemed to be crumbling down, reduced to its studs in some areas, to the way it was still clearly his house. Paintings his father had bought. Elegant furniture his mother selected.
It was all there. Just under a thick layer of dirt and nightmares.
He thought idly about his bedroom, wondering if it would look like it did on his end. A little messy, the sheets typically rumpled and unmade.
He resisted the urge to wander upstairs, reminding himself he was on a mission.
“It’s time. Don’t bring anything. It’ll probably be ruined along the way.”
Everyone looked grave. Steve tried to smile at them, tried to push through some calmness to them all. He had forgotten Billy’s bandana was tied around his face. He sent one last wave of quiet confidence around the room, and led the group through the kitchen.
They had barely rounded the corner of the kitchen island when they heard a strangled yell from outside.
Steve put his head down, and sprinted through the shattered glass doors, skidding to a halt in the threshold.
Billy was staggering backward, his ax forgotten on the ground and his left hand was clinging wildly to his right shoulder.
His jacket was in tatters, thick blood dripping bright crimson down his arm, standing out like neon against the dark, dirty ground.
Steve didn’t feel himself moving forward. He didn’t feel his hands raising in front of him.
He just felt anger. The same anger from before that had ripped through him like a raging forest fire and straight into El.
The thing shrieked.
It backed away from Billy, twisting and writhing as its horrible screams filled the air, making the hair on the back of Steve’s neck stand on end.
Fierce fury was exploding out of him, and he grit his teeth against the pounding in his head.
“You don’t get to hurt him,” Steve barely barked out.
All went still, and the demogorgon snapped into pieces.
Steve felt like he could pass out where he stood.
He had never felt so wrung dry.
His vision was waning at the edges, and he felt an arm around his waist, coaxing him toward the red light now barely shining through a thin layer of slime in the pool.
“Hold your breath, Pretty Boy.”
-
Steve was limp against him, and Billy was doing his best to ignore the searing pain in his right shoulder as he held Steve close to his side. He had fumbled off both of their face coverings, moving clumsily through the pain of his injury.
He took one last breath, and jumped into the rip between worlds.
He plunged into the water, the crystal blue of a chlorinated pool.
It was the best feeling in the world.
Being covered and surrounded by clean. The heated water doing more to soothe Billy’s frayed nerves than anything in his life.
He kicked hard, swimming one-armed to the surface, Harrington a dead weight in his injured arm.
His head broke the water, and he took in deep lungfuls of clean, crisp air.
Someone was tugging at Steve, and Billy, for the first time in his fucking life, was glad to see those kids Max was constantly hanging around.
A woman Billy didn’t know was fawning over Steve, feeling for a pulse, and looking relieved when she felt his hot breath against her palm.
“There’s more coming,” Billy coughed.
He barely managed to get the words out, dripping muck and grime on the cement by the pool, when it felt as though he was hit from the side by a speeding train.
He buried his nose in bright orange hair, hugging Max back as tightly as he could manage.
He was exhausted, and feeling her there, alive and okay, was all that was keeping him standing.
“I thought, I mean, we all thought you were dead. We saw it. That thing killed you .” Billy realized, with a whole lotta horror, that she was crying. Sobbing outright into his dirty chest.
“Yeah, I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.” How could they have seen when that monster just came at him?
“Oh, you’re bleeding.”
And if she only just realized he was hurt?
Max frog-marched Billy inside, to a very pale-looking Nancy Wheeler, sitting ready with a first aid kit.
Billy had to peel his clothes off his body, the fabric stuck to him like a second skin.
Nobody was speaking, and more of the people locked in the other place came traipsing into the room, fluffy towels wrapped around their shoulders.
Hopper was the last to come in, holding the woman tight to his side underneath the striped pool towel.
“Steve and El are closing it back up.”
There was a quiet murmur around the room.
Nancy patched up Billy’s shoulder, Max still stuck to his side like glue, the little boy from camp pasted to his other side.
He had no idea how much time had past when Steve finally came traipsing into the room with Max’s little friend, both of them sporting matching bloody noses.
Steve looked like shit.
His face was covered in blood, old and new, and he still had some of the gross not-liquid in his hair from the Upside Down.
But Billy doesn’t think he’s ever been happier to see someone in his life.
“I’m sure everyone has questions,” said the woman tucked against Hop’s side. El, Billy assumes, had taken her place on Hop’s other side, wrapping the towel around her shoulders as well.
The woman launched into a story that made Billy feel like his brain was oozing out of his ears.
A monster. One they had all met before. Playing body snatcher in their sleepy little town.
Apparently, one had been wearing a Billy meat-suit and wreaking havoc around town, which made Billy wanna throw up until he died.
Which, not-Billy, had died. Fuckin’ brutally. And in front of everyone. Which sure as shit explained why Max wouldn’t let go of his sweaty hand.
The story made Billy queasy, and he took to studying everyone in the room instead.
All the kids were there, even the one that had been following Steve around like a little shadow, but they were all glaring in the very much opposite direction of Steve.
Steve himself was pressed almost against the wall, looking like he’d collapse if the wall weren’t supporting him.
“What’s up with the cold shoulder?” Billy muttered to Max.
“They’re mad at Steve right now. He’s been lying to us all.”
It was all he got out of her before everyone started moving around.
The woman, Joyce Byers, he’s learned, had finished her story, and the group from the Upside Down had begun clamoring for rides home, or maybe something to eat.
Billy just saw Steve manage to slip away before he followed him.
It took some doing, shaking off the little one, who still wasn’t speaking, and looked ready to burst into tears when Billy told him to stay behind in the living room.
But Janet Holloway took the kid’s other hand and gently led him back into the living room.
Billy nodded at her, and sped up the stairs.
It was weird, being in Harrington’s actual room.
It was messy, and looked like Steve spent most of his time here tossing clothes on the ground or twisting up in his bed covers like a tornado.
But it was oddly comforting.
Being in Steve’s real room, and not some perverse dirty copy.
Steve was standing, facing the bed, peeling his borrowed jacket from his shoulders and leaving it there on the floor.
“I never said thank you.”
Steve startled at Billy’s voice.
“Yeah. No problem.” Steve’s tone was light and airy, but Billy heard him sniff.
“Max said the little shitbirds are mad at you. Something about you lying.”
Steve turned around, giving Bily a watery smile.
“It’s a long story.”
“I got time.”
So Steve told him.
About the lab.
About the experiments.
About the torture.
He explained that he had rules. Never making anyone feel something they already didn’t. Never altering someone’s opinion of, or feelings towards him.
Billy grit his teeth as he imagined Wheeler giving Steve a hard time about that.
Steve was silent for a moment, not looking at Billy.
“It’s okay if you hate me. I mean, everyone does now.”
“You'd be able to feel if I hated you. You and those powers of yours just saved my life, Pretty Boy. I’m pretty sure I’m feeling the farthest thing from hatred just about now.”
It was as close to a confession as Billy would let himself get.
But if Steve knows what he’s feeling at any given moment, then that means that he knows, and he didn’t-
“Quit it. Insecurity isn’t a good look on you.”
Steve sounded tired, and he flopped back onto his bed, staring at the ceiling with his arms out.
At first, it didn’t sit quite right with Billy.
He had barely even begun to identify what he was feeling when Steve swooped in and just point blank told him what the emotion was.
Billy spent nearly all of his time being a big fuckin’ facade.
He tried his very best to hide any emotional tell from anyone around him.
He prided himself on being a chameleon. That nobody would ever truly know how he felt in any given situation.
And here’s pretty boy Steve Harrington. Who is feeling just as, if not more, strongly as Billy is.
But, it takes out all the parts of emotions that Billy hates dealing with.
Showing them. Talking about them.
He’d never once had to grapple with the words to explain how he feels to Steve.
Steve would just.
He’d know.
And god, that’s kind of a nice idea.
Billy sat down gently on the bed.
“Alright.”
Steve’s head popped up to stare incredulously at Billy.
Billy just grinned at him.
OKAY I saw your Instagram post things and I just want to know what are your headcanons for that universe?? Is there any specific AU you imagine the Instagram AUs happening in or do you have specific rules for your own ideal version or
somehow, surprisingly, you're not the only one to ask this !!
okay so funny story at first I literally just drew the instagram things bc I thought yeah harley would be so loved by all of internet generation gen z college kids (as an internet gen z recently graduated undergrad myself)
but then as I made the posts more and more intricate with the comments and stuff it kinda...grew into something bigger? like they actually have a particular AU for them now!! so that's fun
here's what I'm thinkin I want in my social media AU:
world building wise:
neither of them are really "heroes" but they aren't outright supervillains either—like they're anti-heroes that dont give a shit about corporate & capitalist culture
aka they can, have, and will continue to steal from big market names and threaten CEOs, but will also pool money to pay small business and support local folks
much like the vibes of the harley quinn animated series, harley and the rest are literally Just People and go to coffee shops and just hang out in public (the fuck is GCPD gonna do for them drinking coffee, send em to Arkham??)
this makes them really well liked by Gotham's general public
also because ivy has and will kill rapists and bad men on sight and harley has on more than one occasion been linked to crimes where abusers have mysteriously turned up dead or beat to a pulp with a blunt object suspiciously shaped like a bat or sledgehammer
there's this specific tattoo shop harley really likes that she goes to whenever she wants a new piece done, and because of her instagram they've become the most popular place in Gotham, in fact if you go there on any given day you have a 25% chance of seeing harley
also I wasn't kidding when I said harley really would have her own psychiatry clinic and continue to treat people (mostly college kids and criminals) for free because harley says fuck the US health care system and helping others would be really fulfilling to her
harley advertising on her instagram story: hey yall I'll be having a trauma processing session tonight at my clinic please stop by if you want to make an appointment or listen to my lecture
oh also harley has a podcast and the episodes vary from "workout routine" to "breaking the glass ceiling of female supervillains and the male gaze in crime" to "why stealing is sometimes okay" to "studying for the mcat and quick tips" to "perhaps marx was right" to random tangents that go on and on and on
pam on the other hand is not only a feared ex-supervillain but now a revered member of Gotham's city-revitalization planning committee
in between heists for rare floral specimen she plans climate protests and tree-planting events and in general does her damn best to try and bring some sort of green to Gotham in a "legal fashion" (a news source once said this and ivy almost killed the news anchor on the fucking spot from how much rage pumped through her veins in that moment)
characters & dynamics wise:
harley and ivy have been living together and literally married for like, a year now by this point
selina is over so often she might as well be living at their apartment
the gotham city sirens and the batkids are besties!! as they should be (this used to stress bruce out to no end but after the third family dinner dick planned with "aunty harls and pam" he had to eventually give up)
in fact jason and harley often get involved in stupid shenanigans and dick is almost always there with them and literal seconds from being implicated in their scheme somehow
jason is often at harley and ivy’s apartment and can greatly relate to harley in many different ways (from growing up in a crime riddled neighborhood to having intense trauma courtesy of the joker and ivy finds it endearing that he trusts harley enough to let people in (and there is a visible, tangible change in him after he starts getting closer to harley, everyone can feel how much happier he becomes)
harley and ivy are 28 and 32 respectively but because ivy literally has the interests and name of a 90 year old everyone just teases her by calling her "grandma pamela"
the batkids refer to them as aunty harley and aunty (sometimes grandma) ivy and ivy fights every time for a different name but just gave up sometime after tim joined in
ivy and tim get along really well, surprisingly
also alfred literally loves pam because she helps the plants in bruce's neglected green house thrive and ivy really enjoys his company because he's on the same wave length as her and "knows when to shut the fuck up and just bask in the quiet unlike literally all other men"
I think I want babs and dinah to be dating bc have you seen their chemistry and dick and kori to be dating bc again have you seen their chemistry but I'm kinda torn and in between and idk
bud and lou are great cuddle bugs and ivy secretly loves it but pretends she hates it to harley's face bc a girl's gotta save some semblance of dignity right
details:
harley has adhd and you can't convince me, someone with adhd, otherwise
harley has both shitty tattoos that she gets for no other reason other than that it's funny or that she hyperfixates on them super hard for half a second and suddenly there's art on her again and ivy's just ?? when she gets home. she also really meaningful tattoos that she has multiple consultations about
she had two ribcage tattoos before the joker, got three tattoos commemorating him during their (highly abusive) relationship which she immediately covered with new ink upon leaving him, and gets a lot of patchwork style tattoos down her arms and thighs
she has a giant flower tattoo going down her entire spine and it's ivy's favorite thing ever
ivy actually also has a (singular) tattoo and it's a diamond with a stem and leaves as if it were a flower
it's still very much a work in progress but since multiple people have asked me about this I thought I'll dump all my thoughts here
Rosey Inn
Summary: Ten years ago you left your small town and small-town boyfriend believing you were destined for bigger and better things. But when your mom passes away and leaves the family Inn to you, you’re forced to face all you left behind.
Pairing: Roommate!Bucky x Reader
Warnings: Maybe two curse words, fluff, angst, loss of parent
Word Count: 6.5k
A/N: This was written for @wxntersoldiers 6k AU Challenge, I had the prompt Roomates!AU.
Also a huge thank you to @starbxcks for beta reading this. Love you to pieces. (PS spot the gilmore girl reference and i’ll love you forever)
This was not the plan. None of this was the plan. Your entire life had meticulously put together to reach one goal. And now? Now you’re sharing a house with a boy you haven’t seen in a decade, back in your home town, and owning an inn.
Talk about cliche.
The town of Rose Hill is quaint. One supermarket, one high school, everyone knows everyone’s name quaint. The people are kind and overly lax in security and come together for events. It sits near a beautiful lake and is known for its tourism. The kind of place people dream of living. The perfect American lifestyle.
Just not your dream. Since you were little you wanted one thing. To be a big shot New York lawyer. The kind that people know will get them off for any crime, and anything. You were going to be the success story of Rose Hill, the one to get out. The one to make it.
And you did. Got accepted into an Ivy League, finished school, and joined a practice. Until you got the phone call, that your mom passed away and left the family business to you. There went all your plans, all your dreams, everything. You were right back where you started in Rose Hill.
The Rosey Inn was a landmark, built long before your grandparents were even born. Passed down through generations of L/Ns. Each owned/managed the inn and raised their families in it. You spent your childhood hiding in the maids closet, tasting the chef’s recipes, tending to the front garden, and reorganizing the books in the front room.
You didn’t play alone though, you had Bucky. Bucky Barnes was your best friend and eventual boyfriend. His mom was a maid for the inn, and the pair of you grew up together. He was your everything and first love. But when you left for New York you wanted a fresh start, one that didn’t include the boy who’s life aspirations were to own a hardware store. So you dumped him and left, without saying goodbye.
Your past was but a distant memory. Until you were back and looking at the familiar inn.
“Y/N! Oh, how I missed you!” you hear the voice of Wanda, your best friend say.
“What are you doing here!” you ask greeting the red-headed girl. She had moved here Junior year of high school and you became fast friends. She was the only one you had contact with after leaving.
“Well, I took over as nighttime manager. And when I heard about your mom I decided to fill in on daytime until you could move back. I’m so sorry about her Y/N,” she says with sincerity in her voice.
“She’s been sick for a while, I’m just happy she’s out of pain now,” you say and pull her into a hug.
“I’ll let you settle in, then tomorrow we can go over the inn and what needs to happen.”
“Thank you Wanda for everything,” you say and head to the house.
The inn set back from the road, with plenty of space in front for parking and picnic areas. Behind it sat a large outdoor eating area, and a gazebo. But if you take the trail to the left, it leads to your childhood home. A three-bedroom house, with two floors and far enough to not be part of the inn, but close enough you could be there in case of an emergency.
You expected the place to be overgrown and in need of a cleaning, but it looked as new as the day it was built. And a car was out front.
When you get closer to the house the door opens and you swear you jump ten feet into the air, only to hear the voice of the one person you hoped to avoid.
“Been a while sugar,” he says smiling.
James Buchanan Barnes looks as good as he did ten years ago when you abandoned him. No scratch that, he looked better. The years did him good, his jaw was more chiseled and light scruff covered his face. His arm filled out and he wore a button-down. He looked refined, older but damn good looking.
“Sure has handy boy,” you smile back. “What are you doing in my home.”
“Must have your lines crossed, I live here now,” he says mischief across his face and eyebrow raised.
“In my childhood home?” you ask perplexed.
“Your momma was having a tough time the past few years and needed some help. She said I could live here if I helped her out. And when she got sick she put the house in my name too, saying you would need just as much, if not more, help when you got back.”
“So we’re roommates?” you ask hoping this was all a joke.
“Sure are,” he smiles, “let me help you with your bag.”
“I have movers coming in a few days with the rest of my things, just brought enough until then.”
You walk into the home and it’s not the dusty and doily place you remember it. The furniture is all-new, and the decor is modern. The living room has a grey fabric couch with navy throw pillows and a coffee table with a cookbook and tray on it. There’s a sleek floor lamp next to it and a flat-screen tv across atop a tv stand with movies neatly packed inside. A soft rug is on the floor with a diamond pattern on it. The entire room looks like a page from a catalog and if your suspicions are right the rest of the house is as follows.
“I took the guest bedroom when I moved in, so your old bedroom is still yours,” he says and you nod heading up the stairs following him to your childhood bedroom. When he opens the door you see it’s the one room that hasn’t changed. It still looks as it did when you were 18 years old and leaving to be on your own.
“I’m gonna have to update this room!” you say pointing to the outdated poster on your wall.
“Your mom didn’t want to change it, she insisted it remains the way you left it,” he says with a sad smile. You may have lost your mom, but that didn’t mean he didn’t lose her too.
“So many memories in this room,” you say and let a few flood back. Bucky’s cheeks heat up and you look down ashamed. He had to be thinking of the time the two of you first made love. You were 17, had the house to yourself, and did what you could on the small twin bed.
“I’ll leave you to settle in, then we could get dinner?” he asks and you nod. You unpack the few outfits you brought along and mentally map out what furniture you’ll replace with the one from your apartment. After getting a little bit of the initial shock of being back, you sit down and take a deep breath. Not only were you going to be running an inn, but apparently you were going to be roommates with the only man you’ve ever really loved. Life really does throw curveballs, doesn’t it?
· · ──────────·🌹· ───────── · ·
The rest of the night was slightly awkward. Bucky ordered pizza and the two of you made idle chit chat while eating it. He offered to hang out with you, but you wanted to get up and going early so you decided to retire to your room instead. He gave a pained smile and wished you a good night.
The next morning you woke up at dawn, a habit you had from being in law. Late nights and early mornings. After showering you get dressed in nice pants, a blouse, and some sneakers since you would be walking a lot today. You made a mental checklist of what needed to be done: meeting with Wanda and looking over the inn, visiting the safety deposit box, and arranging for a storage unit for the rest of your furniture.
When you got downstairs Bucky was already dressed, in dark jeans and a flannel shirt over a faded t-shirt.
“Morning,” he said and slid a cup of coffee your way.
“Thanks,” you say and take a sip from the mug.
“I took the day off from the store and figured I could help you out today.”
“You didn’t need to do that. You’ve already done way more for my family than you ever needed to.”
“I love your family, even used to think they’d be my family one day,” he says. The last part comes out quieter than the rest and you feel a flood of guilt.
“I’m meeting with Wanda in twenty minutes, but after could you help me run errands around town?”
“Anything. I gotta fix up the back steps to the inn this mornin’ anyway. Might as well do them now,” he says lowering the coffee cup. He goes across the counter to where his glove is and puts it over his hand.
Back in high school, he was attempting to make a table for his ma. He got distracted though and sawed into his arm. They had tried to save it, but the damage was done. Word had gone through the town and one woman told her fiancee (who just happened to be Tony Stark CEO of Stark Industries) and Bucky got a state of the art metal prosthetic. But you guess he was still embarrassed by it and hid it around everyone. Everyone but you it seems.
The meeting with Wanda was exhausting. She went over everything from payroll, to linen deliveries, to the filing system. There was a wedding scheduled three and a half months from now that took the majority of the time, as your mom was originally in charge of the day. But everything seemed manageable with help. You moved Wanda to the official daytime desk manager and promoted Clint Barton to the nighttime manager. Wanda said he functioned best at night anyway. She introduced you to the other members of the team, Vision (her husband) was the head chef. Scott Lang was the bartender at night and events, Peter Parker was the bellhop on duty at the time. She said you would meet the rest of the staff at a later time, and that there weren’t any bad seeds in the bunch.
The two of you ate lunch together in the dining room and she filled you in on the staff gossip, little things to help run the inn better. Like how Clint needed coffee or would forget he was even alive, or how Peter Parker could usually lift more than you’d think but if MJ (his girlfriend walked in) he would almost always get distracted and walk into a wall.
After lunch, you texted Bucky (he had given you his new number last night) and met him at his car.
“How was lunch,” he asks, walking up to you. His sleeves were rolled up now and he had sunglasses on. His hair is a mess and his undershirt has paint stains on it. He’s got his toothy grin plastered across his face, and it’s the exact same one you fell in love with as a teen.
“Good, you fix up those stairs?” you ask and get into his car. He had a dark green pickup that was in desperate need of a wash. There was a toolbox in the back, but the front was spotless.
“Yeah, even painted over them too.” Bucky was always the fixer. Helped out whenever he could, and didn’t mind getting a little roughed up in the process. It was always the biggest difference between you. Your life was carefully crafted and there was no room for mess.
The ride is quiet. You don’t even know what small talk to make with him anymore. Do you bring up sports? Ask about his mom? Tell him about New York? It all seemed too stiff and meaningless.
You finally get to the bank and he offers to pick up some tea for you and him while you go to empty your mom’s safety deposit box. He knew this was something you needed to do alone, so he gave you your space.
The bank had one small room of the locked boxes, and the teller came with you holding the second key to the box. Once the box was unlocked you moved to a small table and chair surrounded by walls for privacy. The bank teller leaves you alone with the contents and you take a deep breath in.
Inside the metal box are a few papers, your parent’s marriage certificate, and the deed to the house and the inn amongst them. There are also a few family heirlooms, two necklaces, and a ring. Your great grandpa’s watch is also in the box. But what sticks out is a letter with your name on it. You pull it out and read it.
“Dear Y/N,
If you’re reading this then I’m gone. We both knew this day would come and would bring you home to where you belong. Years ago you left, and I know you needed to do that. You had dreams of a better and bigger life, but you have to know in your heart that Rose Hill is where you need to be.
I’m sure by now you have seen that Bucky lives in the house. He moved in a few years ago to help me out, and I told him to stay after I go. Y/N, I know you don’t want to hear this- especially from your mother, but he is the one. You two were meant to be. As soon as you stop running from that, you’ll feel at peace. He’s a good man and you need to let him have your heart again.
I trust you’ll handle the inn with grace and hopefully not sell it. It’s been in our family for many lifetimes, and I want it to continue that way. But if it’s too much give it to James. He’s family whether the pair of you are together or not.
Be kind to yourself dear.
Love,
Mom
You place the letter down and let the tears fall. It was too soon, you should have had her longer. And despite your best intentions of coming, staying a few months maybe a year and finding new owners you know you have to stay for good now. And for Bucky, you don’t even know. Bucky was the past, wasn’t he?
After you left the bank you went by a storage place then back to the room. The past three weeks have been a blur. The wedding was in less than three months and the bride decided to change the entire decoration scheme to be more ‘woodsy than classical’ and you were still figuring out what that even meant. Besides that, you were trying to figure out how to run an inn. People required directions you didn’t have so you were overwhelmed.
Between the running around you were spending all the time you could reading articles and going through the binder your mom kept. You never really understood how much time and energy your parents put into running this place. Growing up you just thought they greeted people and were friends with the staff. It never dawned on you that running an inn is more than just owning the property.
The spare minutes you had left were spent settling into your old life. Originally you planned to come back for a year and then move back. This was going to be a blip on the radar of your life. But you know now that was unrealistic and this is where you belong. So you officially list your place rather than lease it for a year. You formally quit your job, and you’d still have to fly back eventually for cases next year but that was a ways away.
In the mornings you shared a coffee with Bucky, and at night the two of you ate dinner together. It was comfortable but awkward. Which was your fault. You knew it was your fault, you broke his heart and left. But you just didn’t know how to fix that.
Most mornings were silent. You weren’t a morning person and Bucky wasn’t a talker. But today he had something to say. It only took three weeks, but better late than never.
“Natasha and Steve invited us over,” he says and you nearly drop your cup.
“They got back together?” you ask completely shocked.
While Wanda was who you stayed in touch with and one of your closest friends, Natasha was your best friend beside Bucky. The two of you met in dance class and became close. In middle school, she started dating Steve, who is Bucky’s best friend. They were the perfect pair, she was the fiery redheaded dancer and he was the timid but loyal baseball player. However, in Junior year of high school, they broke up after Natasha got drunk at a party and admitted that Steve wasn’t her first.
He had felt betrayed that she lied and broke up with her and she sobbed on your shoulder for a whole week. You and Bucky got in a fight about it too because he had taken Steve’s side and said she shouldn’t have lied. You fiercely defend Natasha though. It wasn’t her fault she had a hookup with an asshole that she tried to forget.
“Yeah. After high school, Steve and I got a place together while we went to the community college. One day we decided to go to a party at the university in the city. And the next day Natasha was in my kitchen. They had a ‘benefits’ only relationship for a few months before realizing they were idiots and got back together officially. Tied the knot maybe four years ago?” he explains.
“I’d love to see them again,” you say cordially. Hopefully, they didn’t resent you for leaving.
“We’ll go over for dinner?” he asks and you nod.
“I’ll see you later.”
“Good morning!” Wanda sings when you see her. She’s awfully cheery today and dressed up. She has a black lace dress with a high neckline. She’s wearing a pair of velvet burgundy heels and looks stellar.
“You are way too happy and look amazing today. Why?!” you ask laughing and she laughs with you.
“I may have an appointment with an adoption agency today,” she says smiling.
“WHAT! Oh my god! Wanda, that’s so exciting!” you say and pull her into a hug. Wanda’s wanted kids since you were 16 and found out a few years ago she can’t get pregnant.
“I don’t want to get too excited because it’s going to take a while. But we’re starting the process,” she says.
“I wish you and Vis the best. I’m so excited Wan.”
The day went by in a flash. Wanda had to leave early so you were on your own for part of the day. But it went good and you were finally feeling like you had this in the bag.
You get back from work and change into more casual clothes. When you get downstairs Bucky is waiting in a leather jacket. You can tell he’d showered since work because his hair is still damp and he isn’t covered in his signature dirt and sawdust.
“Ready?” he asks and you smile.
“As I’ve ever been,” you say and he leads you out to his truck. Your car had been brought here two weeks ago so you didn’t have to rely on him to drive you everywhere anymore but it made sense to go in one car for this.
The Rogers live in a nice house with a large backyard across town. It’s no more than a 15-minute drive, and you arrive at the house with a flower garden outside and scattered kids’ toys in the yard.
“They have kids?” you ask your eyes widening at the idea of Natasha Romanoff with children.
Bucky laughs, “Twins! A happy surprise though. You’ll love my godchildren.”
“You’re a godfather?” you ask trying to not let the sadness of all you missed seep in.
“Yeah, why they hypothetically trusted me with their literal children I don’t know.”
The two of you walk up to the door and before you can open it a flash of red hair is seen and then you’re encompassed in a tight hug.
“I really missed you,” she says and the two of you move in a circle without letting each other go. A few tears fall from your face but you wipe them away.
“Hi Natty,” you say and she smiles pulling apart. She moves your hair from your face and tilts her head at you.
“If it isn’t my best friend finally. You look amazing. I really missed you,” she says and pulls you into another hug. It seems she holds no malice against you and a weight leaves your shoulders.
“I missed you too Mrs. Rogers,” you say and tilt your head smirking.
“C’mon in Steve’s cooking and I have two people for you to meet.”
When you walk into the living room you’re greeted by two three-year-olds.
“Y/N meet Sarah and James,” she says motioning to the two blondes. “Sarah and James meet your aunt Y/N.”
The two kids wave and smile and say hi synchronously. They were adorable and had Natty’s eyes.
“No hello to me?” Steve says coming in the room and you walk over and give him a hug. “We missed you here, big shot.”
“I missed you guys too. All of you,” you say and look over at Bucky. He lets a small smile cover his face but drops it when he sees you looking.
Over dinner, they fill you in on what you missed. After school, Natasha took over the local dance studio and turned it into a competition studio that was doing fairly well. They were winning titles and having girls travel just to be taught by her. Steve on the other hand became a teacher and is teaching high school history as well as coaching the baseball team. It’s as if no time had passed and the four of you are talking like you did growing up. The kids warm up to you and sit next to you and draw pictures with you.
When their bedtime comes Bucky and Steve wrangle them and agree to read stories, so Natasha pulls you outside to the patio.
“So,” she says and you give her a confused look. “What’s it like living with your ex-boyfriend?” she says and you gulp.
“Oh. That,” you say. “That is bringing up feelings I don’t want.”
“I always thought you two would get married at 19. He was so lost after you left. We all were but especially him. And he still looks at you as if you hung the moon.”
“I broke his heart, it’s not fair of me to do this to him again,” you say and she grabs your hand.
“Babe, you were young and messed up. Don’t let that get in the way of your happiness.”
· · ──────────·🌹· ───────── · ·
Natasha’s words hang on your conscious for a while. Every time you look at Bucky for the next two weeks you think of them.
The two of you start talking over coffee in the morning, and there’s definitely long wanting gazes and the need to be close. He’ll touch your hand when handing you something, and you’ll fix his hair and lay your head on his shoulder while watching movies.
He tells you jokes over texts and you send him gifs every time he complains about a customer. You were falling back into the way you used to be and you are so happy.
On Friday he asked if you guys could talk after work. Which was his right, he needed answers and you needed to ask about your mom. It had been two months now since you returned and you needed to air it all out. But knowing this made you feel jittery all day long. You kept spacing out or walking into the wrong room and everyone could tell you were a mess. It got to the point where you were doing more harm than good and Wanda sent you home.
It turns out that Bucky had finished early that day too because when you got home he was there.
“Hi,” you say awkwardly.
“Hi sugar,” he says smiling.
“You finished your day handy boy?” you ask and take your jacket off and hang it on the hook.
“Sure did. Only had a few customers at the store and figured I could close up early. And there was no fixing to do at the inn so I figured I would come back and relax for the night. How about you?”
“Wanda sent me home. Said I was ‘hurting her flow’. You wanna order some food tonight?” you ask trying to keep up some small talk.
“What I really want is to get drunk and have you be honest with me,” he says bluntly forgetting the politeness his mama taught him.
“Well, Okay. That- We can do that. Still need some food I’ll order some Chinese.” you say pulling out your phone to order delivery from the shop down the road.
An hour later the two of you have eaten and are both slightly tipsy.
“Why’d you break up with me Y/N?” he asks finally.
You turn to him and shrug, “I wanted to be successful and I thought I needed someone who wanted the same success as me. I wanted to leave the past behind and that meant you. But I was too chicken shit to tell you. James, I regretted it every day.”
He gulps audibly and takes a long swig from his drink.
“I was so lost. I was going to marry you. Move up north with you. I knew that was where you needed to be and I wanted to be who you needed too.” he says.
“You were who I needed. Still are if we’re being honest. I just didn’t know that then.” you say and look down embarrassed. I thought you’d have moved on now. Settled with a nice girl, maybe Maria or Darcy. Had a few kids.” you admit.
“Can’t settle down when you’re still hung up on a girl,” he says and you look at him.
“Bucky I still love you. But you don’t deserve me. You deserve someone better.” you say.
“I deserve you. And as much as I want to show you that we’re both drunk and you’re still dealing with grief,” he says.
“So what now?” you ask.
“Now we wait. Make sure this is right and not just unresolved feelings,” he says.
“And if it is?” you ask.
“Then I move out and we pretend this never happened,” he says and downs the rest of his drink. You follow suit.
“Can I ask something?” you say after a few moments of quiet.
“Anytime sug, I’m an open book.”
“Was she mad? I didn’t come home when she got sick and I barely talked to her after dad died. I should have come back. I was a bad daughter,” you say and a tear falls down your face. He grabs your hand that was peeling a label off the bottle.
“Honey, she wasn’t mad. She was so proud of you. Told everyone about your cases and watched the news whenever you were mentioned. You made her so proud.”
“Thank you for being there for her.”
“She was my family too. I think we should get some rest though. It’s been a long night,” he says and you nod and head up to your room.
The next morning you wake up with a headache but see medicine and water on your bedside table. It’s then you decide that you were gonna try to make it up to Bucky. There was a chance to mend this and have the relationship you once had, and you had to take that chance. No way were you losing this man again. Once was hard enough. So you decide this time around you have to court him.
When the pair of you were young, only 13, Bucky had learned from Natasha through Steve at the time that you liked him. So he made it his mission to properly court you. It had started with notes and small trinkets, and after two weeks he knocked on your door with two bouquets of flowers (one for your momma and one for you) and asked your parents if it was alright if the pair of you dated.
They had of course said yes, knowing Bucky his entire life and planning your wedding with his parents when you were still kids. But back then you didn’t break his heart. Now you needed to figure out a way to mend it.
· · ──────────·🌹· ───────── · ·
There were two weeks until the wedding and you decided you needed to ask Bucky to be your ‘date’ there. He was obviously already invited because he was needed to make sure nothing broke and if it did it could be fixed. But you wanted him there as yours.
You woke up the next day early and went into town to get his favorite bagels and a rose. You got back to the house just as he made it downstairs and gave him the flower and food.
“Thank you? Why go through the hassle when we have food here?” he asks.
“I’m wooing you.”
“Doll, you do not need to woo me. I’m already wooed!” he says laughing.
“No, I messed up. And you deserve to be properly apologized to. So I’m wooing and you’re going to let me.”
“Okay,” he says shaking his head and taking a bite from his bagel.
Day one: success.
Day two starts when he gets back from work. You tell him that the pair of you are going on a date and tell him to wear a good pair of shoes. He gives you a weird look but agrees. You bring him to a club outside of town and once he sees it he can’t stop laughing.
When you and him were 16 you decided to try and get into a club. You both had horribly made fake ids and dressed up to look older. You were obviously turned away, but his car had refused to start after all that effort. So you both danced outside to his mp3 player while you waited for AAA to show up.
“I figured we could recreate that night, without AAA and the awful heels,” you say and he nods his head. You pull into the abandoned lot you spent hours in years ago. After parking, you grab your phone and put on a playlist of songs that were popular at that time and spend the next two hours just dancing. Completely embarrassingly and in a way nobody your age should. But it’s nice and the pair of you just let go.
Days three and four aren’t that eventful as you both have a lot of work. So instead you hide little notes throughout his things both days. They’re nothing special, just enough to let him know you’re thinking of him and how much you like him.
Day five you greet him after he closes the hardware store with a vintage Brooklyn Dodgers hat. His grandpa had loved the team and told Bucky all about them. You had to scour online for the hat and it was worth it when you saw the look on Bucky’s face. His eyes widened and he pulled you into a close hug. You would never admit it to him but you took a deep inhale of his scent.
Day 6’s plans were changed when Steve called and said Nat didn’t feel good and wondered if you would take the twins for the day and night. You told them you had to check with Bucky but would head over as soon as you heard from him.
Bucky of course was over the moon to have the kids over so you went and grabbed them after hanging up with him. When you got there Steve had packed each kid an overnight bag and handed them to you with their blankets and stuffed animals. Apparently Bucky bought them for the twins when they were born and they refused to sleep without them.
The twins were ecstatic to sleepover ‘aunt y/n and uncle Bucky’s place’ and babbled to each other the entire drive. You got there and saw Bucky’s truck so you figured he took the rest of the say off for the kids.
The rest of the day was spent running around the yard and showing the kids the inn and it reminded you so much of your childhood with Bucky. You wouldn’t mind your own kids playing here too you think to yourself.
After getting the kids to eat dinner and putting them to bed in the guest room you’re wiped and fall asleep with Bucky on the couch.
You wake up early the next day to little hands patting your shoulder. You manage to get up without waking up Bucky and bring the kids to the kitchen. Day 7 would be breakfast in bed you suppose.
· · ──────────·🌹· ───────── · ·
It was one week now until the wedding and you were stressed. The mothers decided to come in now and make your life a living hell by trying to undo everything the couple had done. Thor and Jane had made it perfectly clear to ignore their parents and you were doing your best to.
You told Bucky to meet you at the inn today since you couldn’t make it out to him, and when he arrived you had Vis make your lunch and the two of you picnic in the garden.
Day 9 was a big one because you were asking Bucky to be your date today. You lit candles around the house and had a big sign asking him to be your date. It mimicked how he asked you to prom all those years ago.
You got dressed up and waited impatiently for him to come home. When you heard his car you dimmed the lights in the house and held the sign for him to read. He came in and smiled at your setup.
“Doll, of course, I’m going to be your date,” he says laughing and pulls you close to him.
“You know you don’t need to do the rest of your wooing. We can just make it official now,” he says and you shake your head.
“James Buchanan you let me finish my last 5 days.”
“I just want to kiss you,” he whines and you laugh at his frustration.
“Soon Handy Boy I promise.”
Day 10 you go to the old drive-in theater with him. Wedding prep is just about done and you had the night off. You fill his truck with blankets and pillows after telling him the plan and having him grab snacks and drinks for you both.
The place is playing Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice in a Tim Burton back to back showing and it’s a good excuse to spend the night watching good movies and snuggled close to the man you love.
Day 11 and 12 you bake for him. The first of two nights cookies, the second muffins. He thanks you for both but asks if you’re trying to Hansel and Gretel him.
Day 13 was the day before the wedding and the entire family had come into town. The entire inn was rented out to the Foster-Odinson clan. It was all hands on deck and it was the fullest you’ve seen the inn yet. But despite the craziness, everything runs smoothly.
Midway through the day Wanda gets a call she was approved to adopt and was so excited she yelled it out. The entire place let out collective squeals (even people who had no clue who Wanda was) and the day just had a good tone to it.
For the last day before the wedding, and your last night of the ‘wooing’ you cook Bucky dinner. He’s surprised by the fact the house doesn’t burn and compliments your meal at least ten times. You tell him about Wanda and Vision.
“Do you want kids?” he asks and you nod.
“I want a bunch of kids. I want to raise them here too. With you,” you say and he chokes on his drink.
“God Doll, I want that too but don’t be that blunt about things. I’m getting older, don’t need a heart attack.” You laugh and he smiles.
· · ──────────·🌹· ───────── · ·
After what feels like a lifetime the day is finally here. You’re up and out of the house before Bucky even wakes. He’s sleeping in since the store is closed today and he doesn’t have to be at the inn until 11 am.
The bride and her bridesmaids are all drinking coffee and nibbling on light pastries when you get there. The makeup and hair team she hired should be here in around an hour. Jane has gel eye patches beneath her eyes and one of the bridesmaids still has their hair in a towel.
After checking that they’re all there and everything is running smoothly you check in on the kitchen staff. They all say things are on schedule and you nod and go to find Scott to ensure that the bar is fully stocked.
On your way to check with Scott, you find Peter carrying the suits up to the groomsmen and he wishes you a good morning. Scott, you find a few minutes later organizing the liquor. Everything seems to be running smoothly.
A few hours go by and it’s an hour until the wedding starts. You thank your lucky stars that everything runs smoothly as the guests start showing up. You feel a tap on your shoulder and turn to see Bucky in a suit. He looks fantastic and you practically drool.
“How’s my favorite wedding coordinator,” he asks and you smile.
“She’s fantastic. How’s my favorite handy boy,” you ask in return.
“He wants to know if he’s waited long enough for his kiss.” You laugh at him.
“He has. He should know that there’s a certain girl fully in love with him who would die for a chance to be his girlfriend again,” you say laying it all out.
Bucky smiles widely, “I love you too Y/N. It would be an honor to be yours again.”
Before you can reply to him he pulls you close and smashes his lips against yours. There’s so much want and need in the kiss and you can almost feel the years lost in it. He doesn’t hold back at all and reaches one arm around you to pull you as close as possible. The other holds your hand and he keeps his lips moving in time with yours.
And you know that it’s everything you need. He’s everything you ever need.
