I love finding characters I can relate (/project onto) within media. There’s something so comforting about seeing yourself on screen. I end up headcanoning most of them to be in-line with my identities (lesbian, wasian, autistic) because they are literally me in my head!!

Anyway here’s a long ass list of my favorite characters and why I head canon them as autistic for fun!! If you have any others you’d like to add I’d love to hear them. (And please note this is just my interpretation, and highly based on my experience with autism. I’m not saying they’re definitely autistic or that all the traits I listed are the dsm-5 criteria or something.)

Princess Bubblgeum from adventure time:

This girl is peak evil scientist autistic. Her intense need for control, the way she carefully observes the citizens she created, an outsider to them, not quite like them… god it’s so perfect. I read her as being somewhat low empathy as well, it’s hard for her to change her perspective to that of others. Plus the fact her brother neddy is a pretty obvious metaphor for higher supports needs autism. I think they of represent how autism runs in the family and appears in all sorts of different ways in different people. They’re sort of two different representations of the spectrum.

I mean this one is just obvious. The biggest nerd of all time. So obsessed with her RPG special interest that she literally sucks her and her friends into a fantasy world. She’s clumsy (just like me fr), very smart but super socially awkward, a little oblivious and naive. She’s terrified of change, especially if it means abandoning the few social bonds she’s been able to make. I honestly find it hard to believe this wasn’t intentional.

Another pretty overt example. I do have some issues with how she was portrayed in the show- (keeping her on a leash was weird.) but overall I really love her. She understands her tech, not people, and it can cause her to come into conflict with other characters. Their treatment of her makes me sad at times, but it’s realistic. I also love some of her other quirks, her love of tiny food, her exitable demeanor, ect.

Pearl from Steven Universe

Peridot is the more obvious example of an autistic character in SU, and while I agree she’s coded that way, I personally resonate more with Pearl. She is not very socially aware, and bothered by disruptions to her routine/ broader life changes. She doesn’t like to break rules (despite being a literal rebel lol.) I find it interesting how she seems to have the poorest understanding of life on earth out of the gems, despite having lived here for thousands of years. She is graceful, but has an almost sort of awkward gangly-ness to her that I relate to. Her neuroticism is also very similar to how my anxiety disorder presents.

Pearl has a tendency to infodump, without realizing those around her are uninterested. Even her relationship with Rose struck a chord with me. The hopeless devotion to her, the way she followed along at her side. It’s how many of my friendships have been. Obvious it’s not exactly the same considering Pearl having originally been her servant, but while not being an explicitly autistic trait, that sort of clingy, starstruck relationship is something autistic people are prone to developing. She does little hand stims at times too that I love to see.

Poison Ivy (specifically the version in the Harley Quinn animated show)

I’m surprised I haven’t seen more people mention poison Ivy. Fiercely intelligent and deeply introverted, she isolates herself from all people, and only connects with and understands her plants. (Which her deep affinity for can definitely be read as a special interest.) She very overtly has trouble forming relationships with others.

She’s blunt, socially awkward and a loner, has something of a flat effect and a monotone voice. Those around her initially read her as cold and impersonable.Her struggle with social anxiety as well as intense fear of failure/ low self esteem is also very relatable to me. She also often struggles to express/understand her feelings and emotions. Her radical political ideas and the fact that she’s literally an ecoterrorist paints her as having a very strong sense of justice and a somewhat black and white worldview. (Me)

Finally, her relationship with Harley just SCREAMS neurodivergent solidarity. Harley Quinn is (I think canonically) adhd, and they’re both outsiders in the world that found each other and just… get each other. She’s Ivy’s closest and only friend and amazing girlfriend and god it’s all so perfect.

They remind me a lot of the relationship I have with my best friend with adhd except theirs is gayer.

"Will you relax?" she said through a laugh as she hopped in the car beside Elizabeth. "We'll be long gone before those guys even know what hit 'em," she added with a widening of her smile.

Ivy glanced back at the bar as they drove off, ecstatic that her planned had worked. The two of them managed to rip off nearly every patron, both in their own ways - Ivy testing out her newly developed app running cards and Elizabeth with her swift fingers. It was only toward the end of their spree that someone started catching on and the two bolted.

"They're gonna let us live out best life until then," she continued, her adrenaline still running wild. "I'm thinking we need a vacation. You, me, and Charlie," she said with an uptick of her smirk, momentarily glancing Elizabeth's way. "All inclusive. First class. Room service. Living it up in the lap of luxury," she went on gleefully, scrolling through the information her app had downloaded. "And it looks like Mr. Grayson is more than happy to foot the bill." His limit was by far the highest, but they had plenty of other options if they maxed out with their splurges. "Now we just need to decide where we're jetting off to," she finally finished with a gentle, playful nudge to her friend. "Have any bucket list destinations you wanna check off your list?" she asked as she scrolled through flights.

Kars x Fem! OC (Ivy Joestar) Part 5: A JJBA Fanfic

Ivy Joestar couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Lord Kars, we cant stay here for long. Lisa Lisa has no sympathy for my feelings for you and my brother—-“

BANG. CRASH. The door flew open behind them, revealing angry German soldiers followed closely by Lisa Lisa and Joseph.

Kars whisked Ivy away from the door with his fast reflexes. He unsheathed his arm-blades, holding them defensively in front of Ivy.

“Kars!” Joseph said angrily, gritting his teeth and furrowing his brows.

“Jojo its ok!” Ivy said pleadingly trying to calm her twin brother and get him to not engage in a fight with her love, Kars.

“You! Fraulien,” a burly looking German soldier growled condescendingly. “Mind explaining where my gun went? You wouldn’t happen to have… taken it?” He advanced, not giving Kars a second glance until—

—Kars dashed forward, slicing the soldiers skull in half with two slashes of his blades. the rest of the German soldier’s body crumpled to the floor in a mess of spurting blood and limp limbs. Kars spat on the man’s corpse. “Hmph. Stupid mortal.” He scoffed.

Meanwhile the other soldiers except their leader Stroheim went running back into the hall in fear. Lisa Lisa undid her red scarf, looping it in a lasso as she edged around the corners of the room, eyes shifting from Kars to Ivy and back to Kars. Her breathing was impeccably steady, a sign she was ready to use her Hamon powers at any moment. Ivy knew Kars could handle himself. He was the most powerful of the three pillarmen, and also the most intelligent. She stayed standing in the corner of the room where he was guarding her from being taken back by Lisa and Joseph Joestar.

In one graceful gesture, Lisa Lisa tossed her scarf lasso to the side as Joseph approached Kars in a fighting stance from a different angle, ready to take his sister’s previous captor down with his hamon overdrive. The scarf (charged by the golden energy of Hamon) snaked across the floor, wrapping around Ivy’s left ankle before she could dodge and ensuring her in its tugging grip. Ivy cried out as she was yanked to the ground and dragged across the floor towards Lisa Lisa and under Kars blade. Kars had already started fighting Joseph and the combat was like a dance. Ivy couldn’t move from the hamon scarf that now had her tied up by Lisa Lisa’s side.

“Kars!” She wept, struggling to get free of the energy imbued scarf. From what she knew of Hamon, it carried the energy of sunlight. Something that Kars could only handle at great risk, due to his vampiric nature. However, Kars was busy now battling Stroheim and Joseph while Lisa Lisa guarded Ivy.

Stroheim unleashed machine gun fire at Kars but the bullets did no damage to the ancient lord. Stroheim taunted his opponent with wat ivy could only assume was the red stone of Aja, a gorgeously faceted stone of bloodied red hanging as a necklace pendant on a silver chain.

Kars didn’t seem phased by these attempts to insight his anger. He kept his eyes on the battle, blow after blow of hamon energy that was aimed at him from Joseph.

“Please! Joseph! Please don’t fight Lord Kars! I couldn’t stand losing either of you! This wont end well….” Ivy’s energy was fading as she continuosly pleaded with Kars and her brother. But she knew that their hatred for eachother was impossible for either to rise above. Joseph had killed Kars comrade Esidisi. Kars had taken Joseph’s beloved sister captive.

Lisa gave Ivy a disapproving glance and adjusted the hamon scarf so it covered Ivy’s mouth and muffled her cries.

Kars successfully sliced the German military leader Stroheim in half like he was a mere nuisance, leaving only Joseph to face him. The rest of the wall of the room was knocked down and destroyed by their fighting, the snow of Switzerland getting in and chilling Ivy’s bones.

Kars kept luring Joseph closer and closer to the snowy cliff with his taunts. Saying things Ivy could barely hear but could tell were low blows by his tone. Ivy remembered her nightmare she had experienced while in captivity. The snowy cliff… losing her brother… Kars abandoning her…. Could it have been a premonition? Surely not. Ivy had prayed if the two ever faced eachother in battle that she could convince one or the other to spare their opponents life. But she had no control. She was stuck as an onlooker as Kars took her brother down, snatching the red stone of Aja and knocking Joseph off the cliff. At the last second, Joseph grabbed onto Kars and dragged him off the edge with him.

Ivy shook with anxiety and grief. Kars would survive the fall, but she knew her brother was only human. Joseph would die from the height of his perilous descent.

Lisa left Ivy, rushing to the edge of the cliff with Caesar who Ivy had just noticed entering the obliterated remains of Ivy’s bedroom at the German army’s camp.

Lisa Lisa and Caesar made it to the edge of the cliff. Caesar shouted something to Lisa Lisa, who looked relieved as Caesar pulled Joseph up who was holding onto the edge of an icicle for dear life.

Ivy’s shoulders dropped. Jojo was safe. Her brother was alive. But her stomach sank when Kars didn’t climb the cliff to come get her and keep fighting for the stone of Aja. She got the feeling nothing was resolved. This fight would continue until one of her loved ones triumphed over the other and ended their enemy’s life. She would either lose Kars or her twin. There was no way around it. Tears welled up in her eyes as Lisa Lisa returned, loosening the scarf and freeing Ivy who collapsed in despair.

“You cant keep us apart, Lisa Lisa. He’ll come back for me. And his return might very well be the end of Joseph.” Ivy wailed.

Lisa Lisa frowned. “Quit crying, Ivy. Your brother is stronger than you think. For now? We have the stone of Aja. Kars cannot win without it.”

Ivy glared at Lisa Lisa. “At this point you’re just being cruel. You clearly dont care about me. LET. ME. GO.” Ivy hissed angrily.

Joseph came up the snowy slope from the cliff’s edge that Caesar had pulled him up onto. He was breathing heavily. But he still managed to look at Ivy and say, “He’s a killer, Ivy. You’re making this unnecessarily hard on yourself by taking that monsters side. Pick our side, pick family. I thought that meant more to you….”

Ivy sighed, exhausted. Her brother wouldn’t understand. ‘Maybe if Joseph had been in love he would…. But with his charisma he’s not going to woo any ladies anytime soon.’ She considered.

The juxtaposition of watching Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy to watching My Adventures with Superman feels very barbenheimer. Like I like watching Harley smash some brains in. But I also like how wholesome Clark.

On a real note, the adventures of Superman is great so far. The redesign of characters, animation style and heart of the show is something I can get behind.

Also his sailor moon transform to Superman is fantastic.
