I'm gonna give Fernsong a half hearted defense because I kinda like him despite the controversy surrounding him.
I think the fact that he was a queen in Ivypool's place isn't seen as as big a deal as it actually is. He didn't volunteer to do the bare minimum and spend *some* time with his kids, he took on the role of the stay at home parent in a society where it's essentially unheard of for toms to take on that role and a few generations ago it was completely normal for toms to not even be involved in parenting. Even if that latter point is disregarded as an element of canon that was abandoned by the second arc as the series found its footing, he still took on a role that is essentially never taken on by toms.
This isn't equivalent to a man in the modern day being a stay at home dad because that isn't a completely unheard of thing now, it's more roughly equivalent to a family in the 1950s US where the mom's the breadwinner and the dad's the stay at home parent because they want to be (only very roughly equivalent because of obvious factors like the fact that it was harder for women to make good money back then, I'm not saying that the two scenarios are completely equivalent I'm saying that in both clan society and in the 1950s US it is completely unheard of for the man to be the stay at home parent and the woman to be the breadwinner even if that's what they both want and would be most fulfilled by/suited for.) It was genuinely cool of him to casually suggest something that is completely unorthodox in his society for his wife's comfort, and the fact that he did that makes him a more interesting character in my opinion.
I've seen some people suggest that he didn't end up being the queen/stay at home parent in the relationship like he said he would because it's not shown in the text. It not being shown in the text doesn't necessarily mean that it didn't happen, especially considering that he's a background character and the family of POV characters tend to not be handled very well in the modern arcs, but also I'm pretty sure that it was shown in Spotfur's Rebellion. I can't find a PDF of it, but I did find this on the Warrior's Wiki.

I can see why some people are upset that Ivypool settled down with him, but I think that it's nice that she gets to rest and have some peace. I'm kind of a sucker for girl with a traumatic past and mental and physical scars from it x guy who wants to give her a better life and support her through her healing process though.

Final designs for now!!! (For the map)
Time to start the script & storyboard. Save me. Ignore that Icewing is missing her color palette, I fixed that on the official version. I think Whistlepaw has the most complex design... But to be fair, she's not going to be in many shots. If anything she'll be in the background!

cannon warriors content always leaves something to be desired especially with the overwhelming amount of incest in the family trees so here's one addendum to a ship I enjoy in my personal interpretation:
fernsong was a young loner who joined thunderclan by the name of whistle who then earned his warrior name in honor of ferncloud whose he's never met but lionblaze told about her and fernsong was inspired by her selfless and loving efforts as a queen that he becomes a king in the nursery. he's a effeminate tom who does the majority of care of his and ivypool's kits. he has a unique talent of singing and memorizing poems that he tells kits. he and ivypool are malewife x girlboss fr

ravenbarley not being explicitly canon and fernsong not being an actual queen is the Thing tho. books that are too afraid to depict the smallest sliver of unconventional relationships don't actually care about them. fernsong isn't some gamechanging perfect sah father because we're told he spends time with his kits more than most fathers, something he's then shown to NOT DO. show not tell. we keep getting told but we never see anything. other popular kids books like wof and even other harper collins kids series feature lgbt characters no problem but ravenbarley is the best warriors can do and we haven't even seen them in the same book alive in over a decade. that's not a coincidence. erins have literally gone on record saying the only topics too inappropriate for warriors to ever explore is drug addiction and homosexuality. they don't care! like if you're satisfied with fernsong's alleged lukewarm queen status that's great but people have every right to complain about it and ask for more than a random website article calling him one
I didn't say I was satisfied with it, I'm not actually that invested in this. I tend to be pretty flippant with canon and am a very strong believer in death of the author, so I'll just interpret what I want to based on what's in canon. With Warrior Cats canon is a mess that contradicts itself constantly, so I have a lot of leeway to take the stuff where he's said to be the one who took on the queen role and accept it. It's not good representation or writing at all and I totally get why some people wouldn't be satisfied with it. I'm not really satisfied with it either and I would've written it very differently, but I'm not that invested in Warrior Cats to begin with and I have little to no faith in the authors to produce a quality product.
