music: weekly roundup (our favorite submissions of the week)
Simon Lynge- Paper Thin
'Paper Thin' by Simon Lynge is a beautiful raw masterpiece that the world wasn’t ready for. The lyrics talk about the struggles the artist faces with being happy but wanting to get better. He sings "I'm gonna juggle whatever life throws at me as soon as I muster the courage to get myself up out of bed." The beautiful harmonies heard throughout the song leave the listener wanting to keep pressing replay (and we don’t blame them.)
John Muirhead- I Can Sleep Anywhere
‘I Can Sleep Anywhere’ by John Muirhead is the musical embodiment of determination and passion. The lyrics talk about how the artist would sleep anywhere so he could play his gigs. He sings "I'll sleep in a car, I'll sleep in an empty bar, as long as I keep singing then it's alright." With a talent like this, it’s safe to say the world will be swooning over the artist in no time.
Vxn- November Blue
For all the hopeless romantics looking for new music, ’November Blue’ by Vxn is the way to go. The lyrics talk about missing someone and not wanting to be without them. He sings "in this path we're taking I don't wanna fake it without you." These sweet-talking lyrics are layered on top of an energetic yet tame beat and it's a combination the world can't help but love.
Clapper the Rapper- Half Full
‘Half Full’ by Clapper the Rapper might just be our favorite pick-me-up song yet. The lyrics talk about finding the positive in negative situations. He speaks these truthful lyrics to the tune of a catchy beat with a melody that will seep into your brain in the best way possible. The message behind the song is one everyone should follow and that's why it’s our weekly recommendation for you.
Timothy- Pendine
The mysterious composition of the track is one the world didn’t know it needed. It has a captivating sound that will transport the listener to another realm of sadness, allowing them to feel what the artist was feeling. The lyrics evoke intense feelings from the listener and the emotion heard with each lyric sung only makes them more poignant. As best described by the artist himself, it's a "melancholic indie song with ambient soundscapes."
Lakelands-One Life
This song talks about the hardships one may face and how they shouldn't give up because they only get one life to live. He sings "You only get one life. Make it a good life." He layers these truthful lyrics on top of a feel-good beat. The track has a message that everyone needs to hear and that's why it's our weekly recommendation for you.
Handstand Parade- Beloved
Handstand Parade has truly raised the bar for the indie-pop genre by releasing their track ‘Beloved’. The lyrics talk about a love gone toxic. He sings “She said you’re making me feel like I’m not good enough. I know we should be picking up the pieces.” The beat is energetic and brings the whole track together into a tune the whole world can jam out to.
Preacher and Daisy- Over Lake Erie
‘Over Lake Erie’ by Preacher and Daisy can only be described as art in the form of a song. The imagery described with the lyrics allows the listener to picture exactly what the artist was going through. The instrumental is passionate and goosebump-inducing, allowing the listener to take in the song in all its glory. It takes the listener on a tragically beautiful melodic journey along with the artist.
IVOURIES- What Did I Say
‘What Did I Say’ by IVOURIES is the definition of an electric and groovy song. The catchy chorus has a melody that will seep into your brain in the best way possible. The beat has a way of evoking a care-free feeling from the listener and we can’t get enough of it. From the interesting instrumentals to the catchy lyrics, this song is definitely a must.
Mike Edel- Challenger
‘Challenger’ by Mike Edel “presents a moment in a time when the world felt out of control, and left us with a collective sense of confusion and disorientation,” said best by the artist himself. He sings “What is the future, if this is now?” He speaks on these issues to the tune of an ear-pleasing, indie-pop beat. The catchy beat and thought-provoking lyrics makes this song a must.
RUBY- The Swell
The lyrics tell a story about how the artist won’t continue to support someone who doesn’t want it. She sings “You remain the same. You blow it each time. Don’t ruin the moment,” and “I can’t be your crutch anymore. I can’t hold you up anymore.” She layers these truthful lyrics on top of a catchy indie-pop beat and we can’t stop hitting replay.
Listen to all these songs on our playlist!

INTRODUCIN’ #114- TOTEM CITY
Salt Lake City’s artful pop duo Totem City answer some questions about how they met, their sound and some of their favourite artists!
01. Hello. How are you doing and what are you up to? We are up watching Spy Kids 2 at 1:17 AM.
02. How did the band come together? We met over social media and collaborated on an EDM track that Nick produced. After working together for a few months, we decided to just be a duo.
03. What was the inspiration behind your name? Totems are spiritual devices that provide protection. Music is like that in a sense. Music can save lives, spark change, and unite the world. Without it, we would be lost.
04. Where are you based out of? What are some of your favourite things about your city? We are based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake is honestly so underrated. The music scene is so diverse here! The restaurants are unique and full of good food. However, we both agree that our favorite thing about Salt Lake, and Utah as a whole, is the scenery. From huge mountains to to cool lakes; there are so many sights to see here, its insane!
05. What was the name of the first song you wrote together? What was it about and did you ever have a chance to perform it live? The first song we ever wrote was called “Tell Me”. The song is about falling in love with someone who is poisonous. We have never performed it in front of a live audience simply because of how our music has evolved. It’s a chill song, but just wouldn’t fit in with our current stuff. It can be listened to on SoundCloud for free.
06. What can we expect from musically this year? We are working on a music video for our song “Prequel” and are wrapping up on a new single. Both of those are expected to be finished and dropped before June of this year.
07. What are some of the bands that you were into growing up? Any artists in particular that made you want to get into making music? Luke: I was raised on the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Eyed Peas, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Queen. All of those bands/artists have helped me discover myself as a songwriter. They set the bar for what it takes to be a musical icon. Michael Jackson though, he was the one who made me want to pursue what I do. The costumes, lights, effects, singing and dancing; it looked like so much fun. So I gave it a try, and instantly fell in love.
Nick: I listened to Queen growing up. Freddie Mercury made me want to be a rockstar, but it was Skrillex that inspired me to get into DJing and producing.
08. If you could work with any artist in collaboration who would you choose? Luke: I would want to work with Lady Gaga. She is so out there with her creativity. She uses music to provide a voice for those too afraid to speak up. She is a genius.
Nick: I would work with The Piano Guys. My mentor and neighbor is their producer. It’s one of my life goals to work with them in the studio.
09. Any local artists that you are into and would love to share with us?Luke: I love IVOURIES. Their songs are full of catchy riffs, beautiful vocals, and sick guitar solos over triphop beats. It’s unique and I love it.
Nick: Radius, Crook, and Malixe. Radius and Crook are hip hop artists and provide some substance to the local music scene. Even if you’re not into hip hop, you’ll like them. Malixe is a local dubstep producer, and is really good.
10. Any sleeping tips for us? Luke: I have a hard time going to sleep at night just because of how wired my brain is. I have a night routine that helps me prepare for bed and gets me in a sleepy mood. I want to make a YouTube video about it sometime.
Nick: I don’t sleep. Late nights are when I work on music the most and when I’m most creative. So, when starting out in the music business, get a job that is flexible and lenient with your hours.
11. What has been your most memorable touring experience? Luke: We have actually not gone on a tour, but we have played some rad shows around Salt Lake City. Hopefully we’ll have some funds saved up for a tour in the future. My favorite experience at a show however, would be watching the audience clap and dance to our music. Some people even knew the words. It was a dream come true.
Nick: My favorite concert experience was the first time I grabbed the mic and sang with Luke. Me and Luke are best friends and I consider him a brother. I grabbed that mic and was singing along and I could feel this connection with
