Happy 46th Birthday Alistair MacDonald, born January 14th 1979 in Glasgow, he was Scotland's first test tube baby.
Alastair was born after his mother, Grace Montgomery, received the first round of the pioneering medical treatment IVF which has now helped conceive millions of babies. The embryo was created by Professor Robert Edwards with surgical procedures being performed by Dr Patrick Steptoe, or ‘Uncle Patrick’ as Alastair knew him. The men were also behind the birth of Louise Brown, the world’s first test tube baby born on 25 July 1978. After being told she was infertile in 1972, Grace decided to take part in Dr Steptoe and Dr Edwards’ medical trials at Oldham General Hospital.
She started the treatment programme in 1975 but it wasn’t until 1978, on the second cycle of treatment, that one egg was successfully fertilised. Grace stayed in Oldham for two months during her treatment and told her family she was receiving special treatment for cancer because the trial was perceived as controversial at the time.
It wasn’t until after the birth of Louise Brown that she realised her son would be the second test tube baby to be born. Alastair was kept out of the spotlight and, as a result, didn’t know of how he came to be until he was nine years old and saw a report on the death of Dr Steptoe which featured images of his “Uncle Bob”.
If you get the chance look out for a film a film about the efforts of Robert Edwards and his team about his team, whilst the main story doesn't cover Alistair's birth, he does get a nod in the end credits
Pics are of proud mother Grace MacDonald, with Alistair aged 3 weeks and a pics of him and his mother a few years ago., the final photo is Alistair with "Uncle" Bob Edwards.

'I'm scared I'll be heartbroken if they don't let us adopt him" to "Maya helps Carina navigate some difficult news." I have 2 scenarios based off those pictures, 1. They don't let Carina adopt Liam because she just has a green card OR 2. So Maya is showing off pics of Liam embracing motherhood but what if the adoption falls through completely. Ita kind of like how people are superstitious naming their baby before it's born. A 3rd might be that Carina is at an IVF appt and can't get pregnant.
I'm definitely scared of any of those possibilities now that they're out in the open (even though I'm so glad we finally got to hear them voice their fears to each other lol) but my problem with any of those being options is that why is the wording making it seem like it would only affect Carina then? If it's anything related to Liam, it would be something they'd have to help each other navigate through, wouldn't it? Which is why I'm leaning more towards it either has to be about the lawsuit or maybe the green card does come into play regarding her being able to adopt Liam or it's something to do with whether or not Carina can get pregnant. Because if the adoption fell through completely then that's also difficult news for Maya. Though any of these options do also affect her to an extent too.
#asks#anon#i'm wondering if carina in that parking garage is her on her way back from an IVF appt or something?#it would've been nice if maya went with her but maybe she couldn't cause of work#like maybe she was getting tests done or something

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Director: Ben Taylor Writers: Jack Thorne, Rachel Mason, Emma Gordon “You’re aware they’ll throw the book at us? The church, the state, the world. We will unite them all against us.” “But we’ll have the mothers. The mothers will back us.” In the early 2000s, when my brother and I were still school kids, we heard about a couple in the family whose daughter was a…

At what point does PGT in ivf just become eugenics I wonder
#els.txt#pregnancy cw#eugenics tw#i mean I get severe defects incompatible with life#but when you get to thinks like. Down syndrome. cystic fibrosis#that doesn’t sound like caution that sounds like eugenics#especially because the whole selling point is ‘we’ll test for these conditions so you WONT get a baby with it’#feels gross I think (NOT IVF to be clear)

The Feminist Birth of the Home Pregnancy Test
Margaret Crane, inventor of America’s first home pregnancy test, in 1965. Credit: Anna Kaufman In 1965 Margaret Crane was a young designer creating packaging for a pharmaceutical company. Looking at the rows of pregnancy tests she thought, “Well, women could do that at home!” and so she made it a reality for potentially pregnant people to be able to know about and take control of their own lives…

wedding was wonderful but I’m very happy to be curled up in bed with the dogs now listening to the rain and finishing a novel. I give myself full permission to be a hermit all afternoon and then I think I’ll hang out and cook with my sister tonight. tomorrow I get bloodwork done in the morning and then will probably have a busy social day with liz + sam which is good as it’ll prevent me from being glued to my phone waiting for the results. at this point I don’t even know how to feel. I’ve read enough journal articles and forum posts to know that the odds are against me but that there is a small chance I’ll be one of the lucky ones whose body just follows a different course than your average pregnancy. I’m expecting to learn that I’m going to miscarry but obviously hoping against hope that I don’t… and also hoping, in a more clear-eyed realist sort of way, that if it has to happen it’s via miscarriage rather than an ectopic pregnancy, and that the process itself doesn’t take too long (so I can start again this summer instead of having to wait weeks or months). but ah well—I need to settle back into waiting mode, as I probably won’t get the test results back until tuesday morning and can’t change anything or make anything happen by obsessively googling in the meantime.
#I think I’m going to switch doctors too if this one doesn’t stick#IUI tag#tw miscarriage#I feel like I’m just having to constantly bug her to make changes to our approach#and I don’t really have a ton of confidence in her to adjust her approach or even notice when it needs to be adjusted#like my thyroid levels jumped a ton since we last tested which ups the risk of early MC#and she didn’t even notice? I had to show her the jump on my lab results#and then had to follow up three times to get her to prescribe the medication#and when I pushed for an IUI at 36-48 hours instead of 24#which seems to be what multiple studies suggest is most effective#she was kinda resistant and then was like well it doesn’t matter bc the sperm will be there waiting for 4-5 days#and I was like no that’s with fresh sperm. the research indicates frozen donor sperm only lives 12-24 hours max maybe less#and then the first time we did a 36 hour cycle I got pregnant 🙄#and then this week I asked for a progesterone test or supplements#and she was like we would never do that for an IUI that’s for IVF only#and I was like that’s just not true! like the research seems to be slightly mixed on how much it helps but most clinics I’ve looked at#list it as a fairly standard part of their IUI cycle protocol#idk!!! just not feeling super confident in her and also I feel like she gets annoyed with me when I’m just trying to like#understand the medical reasoning behind stuff instead of just doing what I’m told#bleh#whatever#I just want someone to blame but I think even setting that aside#there have been enough frustrations that I might just switch anyway

I still like to headcannon that ava is martin's bio kid, think about it they got two kids which for them is enough and decide to stay like that, was far gloria is concerned no more children will come out of their relationship but them ava happens and this changes the dynamic because turns out that small possibility of a bio kid from him became true and plus that makes the only logical motive to a affair with arthur completly pointless.
#headcanons#h&h#harmony and horror#Btw i did some research and blood testing during investigations became a thing around the end of the 80s#And it got perfect in the 90s same for parental testing#Funny enough IVF became avaliable in the end 1970s to the turn into 1980s#so there's that#gloria greywhinder#martin greywhinder#Ava greywhinder
