A regional public health department in Idaho is no longer providing COVID-19 vaccines to residents in six counties after a narrow decision by its board.

Southwest District Health appears to be the first in the nation to be restricted from giving COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccinations are an essential function of a public health department.

While policymakers in Texas banned health departments from promoting COVID vaccines and Florida’s surgeon general bucked medical consensus to recommend against the vaccine, governmental bodies across the country haven’t blocked the vaccines outright.

���I’m not aware of anything else like this,” said Adriane Casalotti, chief of government and public affairs for the National Association of County and City Health Officials. She said health departments have stopped offering the vaccine because of cost or low demand, but not based on “a judgment of the medical product itself.”

The six-county district along the Idaho-Oregon border includes three counties in the Boise metropolitan area. Demand for COVID vaccines in the health district has declined — with 1,601 given in 2021 to 64 so far in 2024. The same is true for other vaccines: Idaho has the highest childhood vaccination exemption rate in the nation, and last year, the Southwest District Health Department rushed to contain a rare measles outbreak that sickened 10.

On Oct. 22, the health department’s board voted 4-3 in favor of the ban — despite Southwest’s medical director testifying to the vaccine’s necessity.

“Our request of the board is that we would be able to carry and offer those (vaccines), recognizing that we always have these discussions of risks and benefits,” Dr. Perry Jansen said at the meeting. “This is not a blind, everybody-gets-a-shot approach. This is a thoughtful approach.”

Opposite Jansen’s plea were more than 290 public comments, many of which called for an end to vaccine mandates or taxpayer funding of the vaccines, neither of which are happening in the district. At the meeting, many people who spoke are nationally known for making the rounds to testify against COVID vaccines, including Dr. Peter McCullough, a Texas cardiologist who sells “contagion emergency kits” that include ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine — drugs that have not been approved to treat COVID-19 and can have dangerous side effects.

Board Chairman Kelly Aberasturi was familiar with many of the voices who wanted the ban, especially from earlier local protests of pandemic measures.

Aberasturi, who told The Associated Press that he’s skeptical of COVID-19 vaccines and national public health leaders, said in the meeting and in an interview with the AP that he was supportive of but “disappointed” in the board’s decision.

He said the board had overstepped the relationship between patients and their doctors — and possibly opened a door to blocking other vaccines or treatments.

Board members in favor of the decision argued people can get vaccinated elsewhere, and that providing the shots was equivalent to signing off on their safety. (Some people may be reluctant to get vaccinated or boosted because of misinformation about the shots despite evidence that they’re safe and have saved millions of lives.)

The people getting vaccinated at the health department — including people without housing, people who are homebound and those in long-term care facilities or in the immigration process — had no other options, Jansen and Aberasturi said.

“I’ve been homeless in my lifetime, so I understand how difficult it can be when you’re ... trying to get by and get ahead,” Aberasturi said. “This is where we should be stepping in and helping.

“But we have some board members who have never been there, so they don’t understand what it’s like.”

State health officials have said that they “recommend that people consider the COVID-19 vaccine.” Idaho health department spokesperson AJ McWhorter declined to comment on “public health district business,” but noted that COVID-19 vaccines are still available at community health centers for people who are uninsured.

Aberasturi said he plans to ask at the next board meeting if the health department can at least be allowed to vaccinate older patients and residents of long-term care facilities, adding that the board is supposed to be caring for the “health and well-being” of the district’s residents. “But I believe the way we went about this thing is we didn’t do that due diligence.”

Am seriously considering mental or physical impairment too, because I'm concerned that the fact that he's still bringing up the pericarditis that I was cleared of simply because it was mentioned in the cardiologist note as the reason I was referred might indicate confusion. I'm also considering inappropriate prescribing but less sure on that one. He prescribed me Levofloxacin for an extremely mild UTI where I had almost no symptoms at all (and it was my first UTI ever, not a recurrent one), which is an antibiotic with a black box warning because of an increased risk of tendon rupture and tendinitis. I'm not in the higher risk group (over 60), but everything I read (on actual legit medical sites, not FB) basically said it was indicated in complex UTIs when other treatment courses had failed, and shouldn't really be used as a firstline treatment for a mild case. I called the clinic to try and get the prescription changed, but the doc was already gone for the weekend, so I decided to go into an urgent care clinic and explain the situation and see if the doc there would call in a different antibiotic for me. When I mentioned which one had been prescribed, his eyes literally widened and he yelled, 'No!' and said that you absolutely should not use that as a firstline treatment in such a mild case, specifically because of the risk of tendon rupture and that it's not worth the risk when there are several other antibiotics that are generally very well-tolerated and have a much lower risk of serious side effects. That doc had a really strong reaction to it being prescribed in this case, but it IS indicated in the treatment of UTIs, so I don't know if it's technically inappropriate. He's also promoting the use of Ivermectin for Covid treatment and prevention, although he hasn't personally prescribed it to me (I am wondering if he would if I had gone to him for Covid treatment, though). And doctors in this state HAVE been disciplined for that; he spent part of my last appointment venting about a doc a couple of cities away being 'persecuted and prosecuted' for prescribing Ivermectin for Covid and also has told me multiple times that he takes it several times a week himself. So at the very least he's legitimizing using it for an off-label use that has already been pretty robustly proven to be ineffective.

Misdiagnosis of condition would fit because at the very least I don't have chronic fatigue syndrome since 'excessive fatigue' is kind of a required symptom for that to be suspected, and I don't have that anymore after several weeks on iron supplements. So I started the Accutane process with the understanding that a month from now I might not even want it, and I'm back to considering more laser-type options even though I previously spent $4,000 on a procedure that temporarily made things worse, and then left me back at square one. But like I'm in a situation where at least once a month I have to do a public thing before an audience of up to 100 people, and it's one thing to just look ugly--I mean that's just a fact of life--but it's a whole other thing to have skin that's shiny with medication and covered in purple welts and other people are making it really clear that they think you're drunk or having a panic attack and they keep going CALM DOWN OK?! when you're just sitting there minding your business. My problem is that NO information is reliable. In Costa Rica, where I live the Ministry of Health spent months saying the masks were not mandatory only for later to turn out they said that because they didn't have enough masks; they spent actual years selling cloth masks only to more recently to be revealed those were basically useless and you do need a clinical mask; governments who nominally were taking measures against COVID (again, like Costa Rica) would claim partial lock downs were enough even though they absolutely weren't; the USA, including maskers, were defending the Pfizer vaccine even though there's proven irregularities in the approval process; in fact Pfizer was literally saying that the virus had to become endemic so they could sell more vaccines; speaking of vaccines, different sources defended and attacked different vaccines so I don't know which ones are reliable or not; Nicaragua was less restrictive than Costa Rica and they didn't have widely different rates of COVID; liberals treated Ivermectin as poison even though many countries in Africa and Asia used it to treat the virus with great success, and at a tiny fraction of the cost compared to the USA; there's some evidence that COVID might actually have been created artificially (and released accidentally, they're not that smart) and yet that's dismissed entirely as a conspiracy theory; the number of necessary shots keeps increasing, and I have heard from reliable sources that getting COVID once counts for a shot of the vaccine, but not everyone agrees with that; we have actual evidence of people getting bad side effects from the vaccines at rates that are actually worrying but that's dismissed; people are defending fucking Pfizer (I'm not letting that one go, Pfizer run literal unethical experiments in Africa, they are not the good guys under any definition)
