I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS.

SO mikulás is the hungarian word santa claus for anyone whos wondering. mikulás/santa day in hungary is on december 6th, and it's complerely separate from christmas. kids put their boots out in the window and receive treats and gifts in it! (yes i always put both boots out bc... choccy... i needed as much as possible...)

and u know how bad kids get coal in america or whatever? bad kids in hungary get smth called virgács. its this thing. it gets translated by google as like "rod" or "birch" its basically meant as like "u should be fucken beaten w this thing for being bad". from what ive always seen, most santa day packages have virgács in them lol but like, along w the treats. ive never seen a kid actually just receive that as like a punishment ajdjdk just as im sure not many ppl just receive coal for christmas

now christmas is totally different thats obviously on the 25th (in our household, the 24th, but we're the exception since thats normally just christmas eve) but... if santa came on the 6th then who brings the gifts, u might ask. BABY JESUS. ITS BABY JESUS! baby jesus brings the gifts...

as for some other customs, we dont do stockings as far as i know. santa and the reindeer are a popular motif and stuff but it doesnt quite make sense for christmas? it makes more sense for santa day on the 6th... idk as a kid growing up w hungarian traditions but A Lot of american influence, i kind of associate the reindeer and the sleigh with both holidays, but i also remember mixing them up and thinking baby jesus was going around in a sleigh- idk. weird times. kid brains do Things.

basically we have two separate holidays in december and on the 6th we get some chocolate and maybe some smaller gifts and then the actual big gift stuff comes on christmas. also leading up to christmas we do advent calendars which are also a thing in america i think. i always had so much chocolate in december bc i got TWO advent calendars with chocolate for every day from my parents and grandparents and then me and my brother also had an additional advent calendar that was a cloth thing that we hung up in our rooms with pockets for each day and every day some kinda treat would Magically Appear in it. so much chocolate.

also i have to tell this story- my mom unearthed some incredibly old letter i wrote as a kid to jesus (with my christmas wishlist). and listen... i had no idea where the man lived so i put down the address as heaven street 777... no further comment on the matter

oh also part of advent preparations is the advent wreath! we light a candle every sunday leading up to christmas. the one with the 3 purple and 1 pink candle is the traditional, the pink candle is lit on the third sunday. the colour purple represents fasting, repentance, and reflection. the pink candle is for joy and the virgin mary. separately, the candles in order symbolise faith, hope, joy, and love.

also if ur in church during the holidays (and ur catholic) then u know the priest also wears purple during the advent time (the other time he wears purple is easter and when ur one-on-one confessing). and he wears pink on the third sunday. thats just smth i mention bc i think its neat, i havent been to church in a decade lmao

bones and all + generational trauma

p.s lots of spoilers for the film in here !!!

this film is one that will never leave u. a breathtaking combination of utterly perfect writing, directing, acting and producing. i dont remember the last time a film made me cry as hard as this one did. ive seen many different interpretations of this film in various corners of the internet and wanted to write about them.

one of my favourite outlooks is that the characters' indescribable need to eat human flesh translates to generational trauma. both central characters (maren and lee) suspect they inherited it from one of their parents, and both were severely let down by them. maren was abandoned by her mother before she was old enough to remember her, and her father refused to tell her anything about her mother (and eventually abandoned her, leaving her birth certificate for her to find). lee's father was a drunk who snapped one night and hit lee and his younger sister kayla, and then tried to consume lee after kayla left to get help; revealing that he, too, was an 'eater' - the term the characters use to describe those with an uncontrollable urge to eat other humans.

the main story of the film focuses on maren and lee travelling across america together to find maren's mother based on the information on maren's birth certificate. maren tracks down her grandmother, and learns that she adopted maren's mother after she was found outside of a firestation as an infant. this insinuates maren's mother was abandoned because one of her parents knew what she was, knew that being an eater was passed down in generations and did not want to shoulder the burden - and ends up doing the same to her own daughter, abandoning maren with her father. maren's grandmother tells maren that her mother admitted herself to a mental health hospital.

maren reuniting with her mother is a harrowing scene for me to be honest. the suspense makes your hair stand up on the back of your neck until the camera eventually pans round to show maren's mother with two stumps instead of hands and wrists. this woman locked herself up and then ate her own hands ?!?!! we know from sully (a creepy old man eater who essentially stalks maren) that the need for human flesh only increases as an eater ages, so maren's mother has been driven slightly mad by this. the nurse gives maren a letter her mother wrote 15 years prior, in case maren ever came to see her. the letter is absolutely heart breaking. it ends with maren's mother trying to eat her in a desperate attempt to remove her from this world because she knows the pain of being what they are in it.

afterwards, maren and lee fight in the parking lot. lee tells maren their options are to eat people, kill themselves or lock themselves up like maren's mother. and maren states 'im not going to be her'. that was my OH moment. she sees what this condition does. and she decides, in that second, that she wont let herself be victim of it anymore. she wont continue the cycle. she wont release the trauma onto others the way her family has, which has only resulted in her taking the majority of the pain alone. and she deserves it. she never asked for it, cant control it, and it consumes her (sorry for the pun). in this scene i couldnt feel anything but joy for her. that she was choosing no.

and her and lee try SO HARD it nearly kills me. they do, they get a flat and get jobs and are happy. but in That Scene, that fucking scene, it all comes crashing down. they tried so hard to escape the cycle but it (sully) finds them anywhere and when it does, every scrap of happiness is wiped from their lives. its so unbearably tragic. they left it behind them, they chose no, they chose happiness but the universe was simply not kind enough. generational trauma cant be banished forever. it can be repressed and ignored but never gone forever, and it can and does destroy them.

this interpretation is not only found in maren and her family though. its very much found in lee too. his father was an alcoholic, hit him and tried to eat him alive. it would be quite impossible not to discuss lee when investigating themes of generational trauma in this film. lee takes his father and leaves him tied up in a barn for three days while the police investigate him. when lee returns to the barn, he could tell his father 'knew' what was going to happen, knew he was going to be eaten, so clearly lee got this condition from his father. i think lee is different from maren in the sense that he showcases how generational trauma can bring out the bad in those affected by it. he literally ate his own dad. maren, at first, was not angry with her mother, she wanted to know if she was alive, if she could give maren answers about their condition. but lee killed his father, using the pain they both bear as his method. he uses it against him, he turns it violent.

lee also has kayla to worry about. his little sister, oblivious to the fact that her father and brother are cannibals. she tells maren that her father ran away after hitting lee and herself - a lie lee told her. she also says that lee has spent almost all of the time between then and the present away from home. it's not stated, but it's my belief that lee did this to protect her. at the end of the film, sully returns. we learn in his first encounter with maren that he keeps a braid of the hair of all of his victims. he is actually soooo creepy it makes my skin crawl. EW !!!! anyway, after he's dead and lee is on the floor suffering from a stab wound, he picks up the braid that maren took out of sully's bag and sees kayla's hair on it. makes me sob every time tbh. he realises that it was all for nothing. he tried to hard to protect kayla from this, but in the end it destroyed them both. generational trauma can severely impact the relationship between siblings - trying to protect them but in the end you can't. it is so sooo sad.

all in all, it is a beautiful film. this is my own personal favourite interpretation, but i do appreciate some others too. i just love this one and wanted to gush about it online. anyways thanks if anyone reads this and makes it this far !!!

Synopsis: All of 141 is on leave and you thought you’d relax at your local and favorite café with the nice lady working there. Little did you know McTavish would take her place.

Notes: This was the most random idea ive ever had and the fastest ive ever went up with an idea like that 💀💀

Twice a year, unless of injury, all of 141 gets to go on leave. This was 1 out of 2 of those weeks. You laid in bed, wondering what you should do on your time off.

Normally, you’d sleep or only go out for groceries since no one else besides Laswell, from the task force was in America. You didn’t want to disturb her and her wife’s time asking to go out somewhere.

You decided to at least get up and take a shower. After you got home last night, you just striped and went straight to your bed.

While getting undressed, you remembered the café that you’d always visit on your time off. That’s when you decided to go there instead of sleeping the break away.

You got out the shower, dried off, and went to your closet. Since you hadn’t been home for a while, it never crossed your mind to do the laundry. You looked up to the tiny amount of clothes on the white plastic hangers to pick out.

You thought about going to the gym later, so you just threw on your compression shirt and some shorts. You grabbed your keys and phone and headed out the door.

As you pulled up to the café, you noticed the usual long line. The place had very few people come around, reason being why you loved it so much. You turned off your car and walked in.

What you didn’t expect to see is Soap panicking behind the counter with a red apron on and hair threw back into a mohawk ponytail with a scrunchie.

You couldn’t help but laugh, the sight almost making you belly laugh in the blaring café. You didn’t realize that you were next in line until you heard Soap clear his throat.

“Hello and welcome to Scottish delights how can i help you today?”

You finally looked up to him. Getting a good glimpse of him made your face warm. His scar down his eye shining in the early morning, almost afternoon.

“I didn’t know you worked another job, McTavish?”

“I don’t. Im here on my mama’s behalf.” “Your mom?” “Yeah, shes out sick. The flu.”

You had to do some mental mathematics in your head to calculate what he meant.

“Like.. Your mom is an employee??”

“No dimwit, she owns the place.”

You had to blink at him for a split second, but your small dick sized brain finally caught on.

“O-“ “Listen hurry up and order and i’ll explain more after my shift, I get off at 6.”

You ordered your usual and waited at a table patiently. You thought about the woman, finally noticing the smile so similar to Soap’s, the body language, the eyes, and most definitely the accent.

You can tell he got most of his traits from her too.

“number 65 with a black tea, 3 sugar cubes, and one cranachan.”

You heard Soap yell, he almost sounded like he was on the field.

Seeing peoples heads and faces turn startled was funny. You got up from your seat and walked over ti the counter.

“Hm, maybe I should meet your mother more personally?”

“Don’t sweat it, she doesn’t like dimwits like you.” “Really? Because every time i’d come here, she seems very fond of me.”

He started turning pink and shoved the bag and cup towards me.

“Just get the hell out and i’ll see you at your place later.” “Ok, seems like a date though. See you later!!”

You took your order and headed out the café towards your car.

Heey just wanted to tell you that I adore your art, especially the way you draw Barok. You humanised him in a way I've never seen an artist do. All your characters, but especially him, look like real, soft, approachable people. I can almost see their chests expanding, I can imagine them laughing and breathing, I can tell how in love your ships are, which is very special and very rare

I've been drawing for about ahhhh 16 years( 8 of which are actually like serious school stuff than just a hobby) but tbh its only really been in the last 3 where i feel like ive been making actual progress in improving my stuff. but thats my personal path in art and its always gonna be different for you or anyone else.

anyways 3 years ago i made some changes to my drawing habits and study methods that were like. real specific to where i wanted my art to go (cleaner lines, better foundations, gesture, etc etc). I worked on thing one at a time tho!! it can get overwhelming real quick if youre not careful. So the stuff im gonna give you is geared towards....well, me? both in content im searching for and just the classes that resonate how i like learning

OK BOOKS:

CLEANER LINES. I use to have a habit of making like EXTREMELY sketchy and unconfident lines. This is a landscape book that i literally just copied every single thumbnail. Helped me get into the habit of both using only a few strokes to get an idea across and breaking down complicated subjects into shapes

ANATOMY. Morpho series. Its not a how-to-book tho its just a compilation of an artists break downs. This one is my fav tho. And helped a lot when i was struggling to understand like ALL BODY PARTS

CLOTHING. This is probably my fav clothing book. Very short and published in the 1940s. Its helpful specifically to ME cause its clothing is closer to TGAA outfits(mens) than more modern books LOL

And now CLASSES. I do actually have an art degree from a university and let me tell you. I was left SEVERELY lacking any skills i needed to go into the industry I was interested in 👍 (not cause of the professors but cause the school itself was actively killing its art department :p) So i was kinda just left looking into online stuff on my own (AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!!! MY BELOVED AFFORABLE CLASSES )

NEW MASTERS ACADEMY. Its a subscription-have access to all the videos for a month to a year- kind of thing. cheapest is about $40 a month. REALLY REALLY helped my anatomy and foundations. Steve Huston: Good for entire step by step anatomy break downs. Micheal Mattesi & Karl Gnass: Gesture. I've watched a handful of other videos but these instructors were the most helpful to me

DRAWING AMERICA. A lot more pricey. Around $100-$300. but youre basically paying to own the recorded classes and keep them forever. I've only really taken Will Westons classes cause he focuses on BGS and props. But he also has some nice composition stuff thrown in there too.

(I've taken a LOT of online courses and the thing about a majority of them is that they arent really taught by professors or teachers so they tend to be more like a giant Tip video than an actual lesson plan. And if u haven't taken an art class before the difference is HUGE)

and i think thats it? i guess if theres anything else i can give u its this tip:

you mentioned my art is humanizing. Thats a comment ive heard a few times and i guess its odd to say but i dont really know what youre seeing? Like i understand the "ships in love" but cause i did go out of my way to draw sappy love faces 10 bajillion times until i was satisfied. But alive? hmmmmmm like THINK i might know what you may be responding to. Its a combo of the gesture and my effort in trying not to loose the energy of the original sketch when i go to clean it up. And what ive figured out is this. Youre not outlining or tracing your under sketch youre REDRAWING it .

i put the under sketch and clean up next to each other so hopefully this makes sense but like. when i do an under sketch im only really focused on building the figure. When u build a figure youre drawing out bigger shapes and breaking them down into smaller and smaller ones. Lines feel like they have more energy at this stage because the circles and cylinders are fully drawn out, making them have a continuous momentum. So then when it comes to the clean up stage. im not looking to trace the exact lines i drew out (if u notice my final isnt a 1 to 1 copy of the og) im trying to follow the flow of the original lines. thats why youll see lines go thru the figure sometimes, its me trying to keep the energy in that line even if its not suppose to be very long.

clippers are the product of american shipbuilders putting a packet ship-esque build on a larger merchant ship

a packet ship is a sort of ship that was small and fast, used specifically for trips from america's east coast to england, usually liverpool. these fuckers were the fastest ships when they were built, and many many sailors died on their voyages bc the captains tried to make em fast as possible

so. we've got tiny fast ship. we've also got large slow merchant ships used in britian for the china and india trade. we've got a man (donald mckay) who rlly likes building ships and is good at his job. puts a packet-esque build on a large-scale ship

for context: the british ships were referred to as 'kettle-bottoms' cos they had flat bottoms that were built mostly to avoid stupid tonnage laws (that the british put in place) (everybody fuckin hated the tonnage laws) and the clippers had a much more streamlined bottom & a differently shaped rudder. they also carried a fuckton of sail, had 3 mainmasts and around 4 sails on each of those

SO the clipper was built. first used for shit like the china trade in the 1840s, then later on until around 1855-56 used as transportation to california for the gold rush. theyre most commonly recognized for the gold rush stuff cos they had to swing round cape horn every single time & that place is fucked UPP for sailing

Trigger warning for homophobia and hate. For your last ask….I also think there is a huge difference in where and when you grew up with how it comes to how you perceive these types of coded words. I grew up in the 80s and 90s in rural America when children in my elementary school played a playground game called “Smear the Queer” and said you would go to hell for being gay. I remember the death of Mathew Shepard at the hands of hateful people crying gay panic and being told if you were gay you would die from AIDS and that HIV was Gods punishment. I remember hearing the word queer and twink and faggot being said with hate and derision. I remember being told twink was short for “twinkee” because a twink was “young, dumb, and full of cum”. I remember a limp wrist gesture being a deadly insult to the boys in my school. It took me many many many years to even admit to myself I was gay. I still don’t talk about myself or my partner with the people I work with cause even now I just feel like you never know who is hateful. I can’t imagine someone openly yelling out a gay slur in the street anymore, but I can imagine not getting a promotion at work. I feel very disconnected from the current generation and their use of gay coded language which my whole childhood was used with such hurt. It’s like homophobia went from what I experienced in my youth of being open and in you face to being all these coded cutesy terms. It sure feels like all the same insinuations are all still there just coded differently. Or maybe I’m just old and out of touch and letting my experiences color how I see things now. It’s even hard for me today to accept the reclamation of the word queer by the lgbtq+ community so I know my experience color my perception of thing.

no i think ur absolutely right. its not that ur old and out of touch, i think its that the younger generation is naive and overly comfortable. i have not had an experience nearly as intense as you in my childhood but i think growing up in quite a heavily homophobic country like romania and then moving to the uk was still quite a big culture shock to me. i kind of had the idea as a teen that romania as a whole is a homophobic culture and the west just isn't to that level (mostly out of jealousy for the things i was seeing on the internet lmao) and that perception deffo changed since ive been living here. essentially what i realised was that (especially) men were almost as shitty to women and gay people in the uk as they were back home, just way more covertly, because they knew how to say all the right things. so the only consequence of this for me personally was just that in the uk i am more likely to be negatively surprised by someone who i thought was chill, whereas in romania i was more likely to b positively surprised by someone who seemed like theyd have a horrible reaction to me coming out. but as far as i can tell british people themselves dont clock this at all, and a lot of them will just assume that if theres no overt discrimination happening then theres no discrimination at all. which is kinda scary from my pov but again, like u, idk whether to feel like im just reacting to my own circumstances and projecting

Daomubiji is the gayest "not written to be intentionally gay" I've ran into in the cwebnovel world. Like. In English? Yeah plenty of fuckers especially pre 2015 would make a story gay but never intend it to be read that way and yell at people who did (and some who didnt get mad but also didnt want to embrace that potentiality). Occasionally making something intensely gay. Nowadays most English stuff either is aware of how gay it wrote shit and therefore okay with itself as that, or is so unintentional it's just a baffling situation

Meanwhile in cwebnovels it's a pretty established genre to just put out gay content so usually if it's gay it's already fully aware it's writing in such a way (now cdramas are another story since it's the foggy land of some gay stuff being adapted to "bromance" meanwhile some purposely friendship stuff trying it's hardest to slide toward "bromance" to capitalize on that angle without actually being gay, then the ones in the middle happy to capitalize on the gay and playing hard and loose and not really confirming what their intent truly is -dmbj shows are Now Here-, and then original script "bromances" fully intending to be gay the way Xena was like Killer and Healer which I applaud for wanting to do gay in an impossible environment with no book to lean on as the reason it was made gay as it was - mriad also toed this, that tan jianci show recently did etc). So like usually if it's Not overtly gay as a novel I assume no intention was purposeful, at least not much. (Though to be fair maybe there are authors utilizing subtext and a bit scared to go overt gay cause of how that may affect them/sales/their future etc, which may be going on but I am not aware enough of everything in non-gay novel land to comment. Fair enough though that was certainly going on in Hayes code America in the film industry, with some people making gay threesome art films sliding past the radar on purpose, others making metaphor as literal wasn't alloved, others accidentally making subtext rather than on purpose, and I'd say to some degree novel wise that would have been going on as well. I didn't read many us novels from 70s-2000 but iwtv made gay implied and the sequel a decent time later made gay overt and I'd assume some bigger safety in writing gay characters was felt by authors later in the century).

Anyway, my point. Of the small amount ive read, dmbj is sure the gayest "not in the gay genre" cnovel I've found. There's The Kings Avatar, that's big, can anyone tell me if it's gay? There's Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, which has a gay side couple but that's not quite the same. There's LiuLi (Love and Redemptions novel), but a main character who's multiple genders and a bi love interest is just... not common in general anywhere so that's more of a one off thing (I'd love for it to be more common though). Mostly the big stuff that comes out that people interpret as gay out of cnovel land... IS purposefully fully intended as gay.

Meanwhile dmbj show wise, is at the point where scenes adapted from its own novel get cut for being too gay (oh wu xie u bastard cat ur too into xiaoge for censors to bear). Dmbj show wise, for a while, for baffling reasons post The Lost Tomb (because if you squint HARD there's non gay reasons to put in all the gay scenes as a speed run implied instant Platonic fondness/connection that's just using romance action tropes to speed it up to communicate to audience since it only has like 10 episodes... again, if you squint I can see an oblivious straight person somehow thinking it was straight). But then by The Lost Tomb 2 you've got the saving him in a tux in his arms shit, Ultimate Note you've got scenes Being cut for being "too gay" wu xie, in Reboot you've got the whole cast well aware of ships and nanpai Sandshu also WELL aware by that point so if there's any "bromance" now towing the line of gay it's at least likely on purpose and self aware they're on the line.

But then there's. The fucking novels. Wu Xie my dude. Iron triangle my guys. How did all this accidentally happen? Is this the beautiful outcome of npss starting fanfic with no idea where it would end? You genderbend a love interest, make the guy embody ur idea of cool so u have to have ur viewpoint character wu xie notice how Cool said Cool Guy is, and the gender ambiguous premise leads to romantic interest slanting framing of such character, leads to that entire structure continuing long after u decided emo boy is a dude, wu xie is into men now and ur in way too deep now to backtrack so pangzis commenting, now ur cool emo got Emotionally Attached to one person in this whole world and it's ur viewpoint dude, now he's sacrificing for him, now they're at Minimum as gay as Kirk and Spock and quickly hurtling to Xena/Gabrielle levels. And I'm googling pingxie having heard of dmbj, having never seen an episode, ans finding its one of the biggest Ships TM. Thinking it's some fan ship with no Canon basis like idk captain america/iron man, then I watch The Lost Tomb and no these fuxkers as gay as Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan to my assumption. Then I look up the books and it's. Odd. They're definitely soulmates, they don't date others, they retire together, xiaoge sees wu xie as The Person for his ass TM, and it's uh. It is what it is. But, if you watch the shows it's treading on "this Bromance is so close to/possibly Is Romance that we are being assumed as actual bl" line. Which I guess in show form is Xena/Gabrielle.
