Christmas Post with an idea I love but never finish the rp

Harvey sat another box down by the tree with a sigh, he looked over to see the blonde little boy with his chest pressed to the back of the couch watching the snow through a foggy window. He smiled softly at the sight, "Laying down hard out there, isn't it?"

Oliver nodded gaze locked outside for only a few moments longer before he looked at Harvey from over his shoulder, "Uh huh! Glad 'm here, not out there!"

The comment made Harvey freeze a moment in surprise before forcing the expression away to nod instead. He knew about Oliver's already shaky past, never having a stable home in the chaotic lifestyle of the notorious Joker and Harley Quinn, still the statements always seemed to catch him off guard.

"Yes, well, I'm glad you're here too," he finally stated, smiling gently.

"We both are," Gilda assured, coming in to sit next to Oliver. The little boy wiggled almost in an uncomfortable manner but a shy smile that peeked through showed otherwise.

The couple chuckled softly at the little boy, "What do you think Santa brought you?" Gilda hummed gently.

Oliver furrowed his brows lightly, then shrugged, "Dunno, he's never come to me before," he mumbled, "...probably cause 'm bad.." he added in more of a mumble. The tense and awkward silence came over the room once more and after it settling Harvey came over kneeling to our knee in front of Oliver.

"You aren't bad, Oliver," he murmured reassuringly, "in fact you've been so good the entire time you've been here, I bet Santa's going to bring you lots of presents."

Oliver's eyes lit up at the prospect, only dimmed lightly by some hesitation, "You really think so?"

"I do," Harvey murmured, resting a hand gently on Oliver's knee and putting it a moment or so before raising back up to his full height, "Now then, do you want to help decorate the Christmas tree?"

Oliver blinked looking up at the fake tree, by now with its wired limbs stretched out, boxes laid open revealing colorful and sparkly ornaments of all sorts of designs though most predominantly in circles. Finally, he nodded a little bit, sliding off the couch.

"Sure," he mumbled, "though I still dunno why people keep trees in their homes..!" his voice perked up, edging either curiosity.

Harvey felt another sting but Gilda seemed to know the right thing to say as she stood up too, guiding Oliver closer to the boxes, "I'm not sure either, but it is fun to decorate," she smiled softly down at him. She bent down fishing out a red ornament with a glittered white stripe across the middle and handing it to Oliver gently.

"Now... where would you like to hang this?"

The decorating went well, Oliver truly seeming to get into it, especially when Harvey lifted him up to add the star at the end. After some more time of showing Oliver some traditions and reading a Christmas story book to him, Gilda was tucking Oliver in, Harvey by his bed.

"Have you thought about what you want from Santa?" Harvey asked.

Oliver blinked bleary-eyed, offering no answer right away almost making Harvey believe the blonde child hadn't heard him. He was willing to drop it, not wanting to pressure the child, there was still time to shop and, if all else failed every kid liked toys, Harvey figured. Suddenly however, the little boy murmured, "What's Santa like?"

Gilda paused glancing to Harvey to see if he was going to answer, sure enough, Harvey heaved himself down to the floor next to Oliver's bed.

"Well Santa is a big and jolly... he likes spreading happiness to the children of the world..."

Oliver contemplated on this information before finally humming, "Maybe he really will come this year.." Oliver decided. Harvey chuckled as Gilda pet his hair.

"You think so, tyke?" Harvey hummed.

Oliver nodded, "Uh huh... or maybe he already did... cause this is all the happiness I need," the little boy's words slowly started to slur, but he added all the same, "I like being here... it's my favorite so far.... I dunno if I could thank Santa enough..."

Harvey felt his heart clenching already at the child's words, "Uh... well.... Santa likes cookies. We'll make him some to eat Christmas Eve together... how's that sound?"

Oliver nodded, "Really good... wanna make him the best cookies.... for the best present.." Oliver's words faded slowly into silence, even and at ease breathing.

Harvey and Gilda traded looks, the same thought on their minds.

It was cat and mouse for as long as you could remember. 

You were a well known model, walking for Versace, Gucci, and Mugler since 2004. You somehow got roped into the Jackass crew when you had went to the first premier of the movie which was a backyard BBQ with celebrities left and right, playboy models and hustler girls walking around everywhere you looked.

Youd shown up with friends, Knoxville stealing you to say hi right after youd grabbed a drink.

“Big fan” He smiled, god that smile

“Likewise” you spoke, shaking his hand.

I watched you change, into a fly

I looked away, you were on fire.

It was breaking up and making up, every few months. Youd fuck, youd fight, youd see him in the tabloids with a new blonde the next day. Then after your declaration of finally being “done with him”...He’d show up backstage of your latest runway show.

I watched a change in you, It's like you never had wings

Now, you feel so alive, I've watched you change

Bam Margera had invited your best friend to come to the bar the Jackass Crew and himself were at in New York City. You knew he would be there, and you told yourself no…don't feel into his ego…don't show him, he still had you wrapped around his finger.

“Come on, Y/N, seriously…for me? You know ive been into Bam lately…And you know all those guys anyways! Who cares if Johnny will be there” Your friend, Melissa, had a big grin, batting her lashes at you.

You looked at her and let your head fall back as you sighed, 

“Fine…Mel, alright I'll come. For. An. Hour” You pointed in her face, walking to your suitcase to pick out something to wear.

She landed a big kiss on your cheek, and you laughed. 

“Y/N, holy shit I love you, I will totally owe you a drink at the bar!” She gleaned, running to put her shoes on. 

You looked at yourself in the mirror, fluffing your hair. You'd thrown on your outfit Finishing the look with your harness motorcycle boots, and that one final…accessory.

His belt

God, you'd stolen that belt from him two years ago and he hasn't asked about it back since. The jewelry around your neckline and wrists clanged together as you reached for it. 

It was black, some studs, and his old red Waylon Jennings belt buckle on it. You were wearing it, you had to. Mess with him a little, tease a little, maybe piss him off…who knows what wearing this belt would do to you. 

I took you home, Set you on the glass

I pulled off your wings, Then I laughed

You and Melissa walked into the dive bar in Brooklyn. You had looked around, spotting Wee-man hand standing on the bar while also funneling a beer. 

You and Melissa couldn't help but to groan while laughing, what the hell did we get ourselves into.

“Well, well, I knew you’d be here.” You hear a familiar, Pennsylvanian accent slur.

Melissa turned around, and smiled, giving him a hug. You still had no idea if he had said that to you, or his date who’d finally arrived.

Bam smiled and hugged Melissa, then looked up at you in their embrace, and spoke

“Yeah, I'm talking to you.” He laughed, and Melissa pulled away. “Good luck” He said, accent prominent, and pulling Melissa on his arm towards the other guys.

Melissa looked back and cringed, mouthing ‘Sorry’ as she continued to walk with Bam. A few minutes later, youre standing at the end of the bar, chin in your hand, waiting for your much needed gin and tonic. 

“...So that’s where my belt has been, huh.” You heard that voice, his voice, shit, compose yourself a bit, dont turn around yet.

You kept yourself facing the bartender, feeling Johnny’s looming figure just inches behind you.

“Yeah, well…” You turned around, straw in your lips.

“I always thought it looked better on me, no?” You tossed your hair over your shoulder, taking another sip.

I watched a change in you, It's like you never had wings

Now, you feel so alive, I've watched you change

He looked down at you, and tilted his sunglasses down.

“I take it back…you look quite lovely tonight, Rabbit.” He said softly, taking off his sunglasses fully.

That nickname, he's playing a dangerous game, but he's playing it just right

“Starting already, Knox?” You couldn't help but to smile, you two were like magnets whenever you were five feet within the same space together. 

“Whaaat, Y/N…you’re being mean tonight…are you breaking up with me?” He joked, smiling after his last few words. 

“Don’t you wanna catch up?” His arms slapped against his thighs, grabbing his beer from the bar and taking a sip.

“What to hear about the next blonde youre seeing?” You rolled your eyes, “Dont think im too interested, Knox. 

I look at the cross, then I look away

“Hey…come on now, that's over with…” He stepped closer, you're now trapped between him and the bar. “Come have a smoke with me…” He grinned, pulling a pack of cigarettes from his shirt pocket. 

I'm in for it, and now I'm crossing a path that's near impossible to turn around on.

He lit your stick, then his. You had your back against the brick wall, him leaning on the wall on his side, on arm holding him up above his head. 

You both took a drag, making eye contact, not breaking with the other. He exhaled his smoke, stepping closer, his hand with the cigarette stroking the side of your face, thumb going over your lip. 

“I always forget how gorgeous you are, rabbit…” he pulled up your chin as you took another drag

“How do we,” You exhaled the smoke, “always end up like this, huh, John?” 

Your mind was fuzzy, you had a buzz, desire.

“Maybe this is just…meant to be.” He took your cigarette and put it out, grabbing your waist and pulling you in for a smoldering kiss.

You gasped, usually you're able to fend him off for at least another hour. But, the inevitable is going to happen. 

You pulled him in by his belt buckle, whining into the kiss. The feeling of his tongue shooting straight to your core. He tasted like beer and cigarettes, your favorite.

I watched a change in you It's like you never had wings

His right hand sneaked down, and grabbed a handful of your ass slowly, and he groaned. You took this opportunity to stick your tongue between his lips and grab a handful of his hair.

“PJ” You whined…taking a breath

“Baby, come on, baby, if you call me that you know this will be a long night…” He grabbed you by the chin.

You held his belt buckle, teasing the trail of hair leading down under his dickies.

“So let be long, Knox…” You smiled.

“Pleaseee come with me” Chris was begging over the phone

“I don’t know how to ice skate though” I said back to him

“Dude I can teach you” he said in a dumbfounded way

“Why don’t you go with Nate, Matt and Nick?” I asked him

“They don’t want to go with me, and I really don’t want to go alone PLEASE” he yelled the last part

“Chris my ears..” i said to him

“Sorry! But please come with” he said sounding sad

“UGHH fine” I told him feeling defeated

“YES! Okay I’ll be there in 15” he said before hanging up on me

I sighed, and decided to get dressed. Waiting for Chris to come get me. Finally I heard music blasting and tires screeching to a stop, so I knew it was him. He just got his license, and for sure did not know how to drive still

I ran out the door, and into the car

I gave him a side hug as I got in the car

“Hey Chris” I said after I pulled away from the hug

“Helloooo ready to bust your ass” he asked as he put the car in drive and literally skirted off

“Ummm if we make it there, Jesus who was in the car with you when you took your test? A blind person?” I asked laughing at him

“Excuse me that’s not nice” he said looking at me with a sad face

“I’m sorry, but I’m also very serious,” I told him, laughing in his face.

The rink was only 10 minutes from my house. So once we pulled up and parked we hopped out, and headed inside

“Damn there is no one in here” I said as we walked up to the booth to pay for our ice skates

“Well it’s 12pm on a Monday afternoon….who would be here” he asked after paying

“You weird ass” I told him

“Well you’re here with me too, so that makes??? TWO WEIRD ASSES” he said, and we just laughed about it as I shook my head at his stupidity

I put my skates on, and immediately started to regret it…how the fuck am I supposed to skate on ice in these?? Let alone walk to the damn rink

“CHRIS” I yelled as I tried to stand up

He ran over and helped me balance myself

“I’m going to eat shit while we skate, and then you’re going to not be paying attention and skate right over my fingers, and then I’ll have no hands” I said trying to not go skate

“Y/N be for real right now….this is not final destination” he said pulling me with him to the ice

“I’m so scared” I said gripping onto him tightly

“Calm down and relax before your knees lock and you pass out” he said laughing at me

“This is not funny asshole” I said smacking him lightly

He helped me onto the ice and immediately I almost fell

“You are like a newborn deer” he said holding onto me

“In case you haven’t noticed because I know you don’t like to listen, but now you don’t like to use your eyes apparently…IVE NEVER DONE THIS” I told him sarcastically

“I’ll let you go” he said started to back away

“NO! I’m sorry” i said pulling him in tighter

“Take me to the ledge I’m going to hold on” I told him

He brought me to the ledge and I held on, I took my phone out of my pocket, and opened up TikTok

“Since I can’t skate let’s make some tik toks” I told him, at first he rolled his eyes, but then agreed

I started to film the tik tok, and slowly backed away from the camera

“Oh my god I’m doing it” I said as I looked back at him. The countdown went down and we started to lip sync to “I’m real” by Jlo and Ja Rule. I back up into Chris and he grabbed me putting his arm over me to hold me while we lip synced

A few tik toks later I was getting more comfortable skating a little bit.

Chris had it recording and I came up skating behind him, but I got a little wobbly, and I went to grab Chris, but I was falling and I ended up pulling him down with me. Both of our legs went up into the air, and we started dying of laughter. Chris got up dying of laughter and was trying to help me up, but he could not stop laughing

Finally he got me up, and I had hit stop, and slid the phone back into my pocket

“Okay let’s go to center so I can teach you some more” Chris said pulling me to the center of rink with no protection around us

“Okay so first move is how to stop” he said so he started to skate and stopped

“Do exactly that and you will not fall” he said smiling

“Oh my god yes that is so easy” I said in the most sarcastic way

“Just do it” he said rolling his eyes

As I went to stop I continued to slide, and fell right on my ass

“OUCHHHH” I said groaning and trying to get myself up

“Well how about we try a spin?” He asked

“Bitch? A spin? I just ate shit trying to stop and now you want me to become a figure skater” I told him

“It’s easy watch” he did a small spin, and I will say it looked easy, but Chris knew how to skate

As I went to do the spin I lost my balance, and as I went to fall back Chris caught me in his arms.

I looked up at him, and our eyes locked as we stared into each others eyes

“You’re not falling for me now are you?” He asked with a smug expression

I just rolled my eyes and got back up

“Way to ruin the mood” I said looking at him

“There was a mood?” He asked with a dumb look on his face

“Chris can’t you see I like you?? The way I just looked into your eyes, and practically melted” I said looking at him

“Ahhh so you do feel something for me?” He asked smirking

“Chris….” I said sighing

“What if I told you the feelings were mutual?” He asked skating closer to me

“I’d probably kiss you” I said looking at him

“Well in that case I really like you too” he said smiling at me

I turned and crashed our lips together pulling him in by his coat. We both pulled away

“I could do that all day” he said

“What is it with you and corny ass pick up lines” I said laughing at him

“Because they make you laugh, and I love how you look when you laugh” he said back to me

“Stop” I said trying to skate away as I was blushing, but instead I lost my balance and I took Chris down with me again

As we hit the ice with a thud we started laughing. He looked over at me, and kissed me, and I kissed back

“We’re going to have to work on these skating skills if you’re going to date me” he said helping me up

“Well good thing I have a good teacher” I said kissing him on the cheek

“And I have a good learner,” he said, kissing me back.

there id this trend on tik tok and its basically people posting their parents to 7rings (god I hope that’s the right song title) but the lyrics go “I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it” and to every part they add like when they first noticed the person and stuff basically how they got their partner i really hope you’ve seen it cus this is so badly explained but basically imagine either five star posting that trend about luke or luke about five star or generally like some sort of couple video cus I think they would’ve done one of them

Honestly, it feels like people just hate on him way too much lately. The posts ive seen on twitter, on tik tok, on tumblr... Do people just not like him anymore? Why did everyone turn against him so suddenly? I've been hoping it's something temporary, just a trend, but. I don't know anymore. People mock his disability, spit on his trauma, wish death on him and interpret everything he says or does in the worst possible way. I saw someone crying about how entitled he was because he took aang's seat when watching the play just the other day lmao. Another person wrote about how mysoginistic he was because he didn't remember katara's name when asking about kya's death to sokka? There are those who even call him a colonizer on the same level as iroh lmao. It seems their justifications for all the salt they throw his way are along the lines of "he's been loved for too long, aang stans have suffered way more, people just watched the show again and realized how bad he actually was, he's catching strays since his fans keep setting him up, his fans paint him as perfect and erase every bad thing he's done" etc etc. I'm all for criticism and deeper character analysis, but this is just said in bad faith. I also think it has a bit to do with how different engagement has become in fandom spaces recently (things people support in fiction need to be morally correct) and well, zuko was the perfect target. He's done bad things, sides with the villains for a good portion of the series, redeems himself but there are things he still has to work on... I don't know, it's been getting to me. There are many other harsh things ive read said about him (like implying how every single member of the gaang hates even after redeeming himself), but i honestly don't have the energy to delve into each and every one. His arc was poorly executed and his development was badly written now, apparently. I kind of just ranted here, i apologize. Im very happy to read the posts of someone who genuinely likes him and doesnt throw him under the bus to defend or elevate other characters...

hi! i'm glad you're enjoying my blog <3 and no need to apologize for the rant, i'm always happy to talk about zuko!

about to theorize a bit as to why it seems like maybe zuko has become a more contentious character, but it should be noted i have not been exceptionally, actively involved in the fandom very long. i loved atla as a kid, have retained fond memories, have witnessed some discourse from the fringes over the years, but only recently has it overtaken my brain to the point of making a whole blog about it. lol. so, like, grain of salt, etc.

i think a big part of it is what you said - in the last few years of fandom in particular, it feels like there has been a huge upswing in purity culture, moralizing liking/not liking certain ships or characters, and an overall increase in very black-and-white thinking. there's also an emphasis on "holding people accountable" (good in theory), often without specifying what, exactly, that looks like (less good). the idea then becomes that if you've done harmful things, there's no way you can ever make up for them and should just, like, hate yourself for all eternity and also die, probably, which is not actually helpful to anyone.

so, i think for those who ascribe to that mindset, zuko is a prime candidate for them to criticize. and while there's nothing wrong with criticizing a character or their arc or writing if you truly have a problem with it, as you've said, a lot of the time, criticisms against zuko don't seem to be made in very good faith. after all, a big part of zuko's arc is having to unlearn some very black-and-white thinking. also, zuko is not a real person. he is a character, and therefore a narrative tool, and if we want him to be 'held accountable', we need look no further than the story itself, in which he is probably the character the narrative holds the most accountable for his actions due to his prior status as a villain.

(it reminds me a bit, actually, of another favorite character of mine: alec in the tv series shadowhunters. he starts out the story already in a heroic role, unlike zuko, but a big part of his narrative is unlearning some prejudiced cultural mindsets and challenging not only his previous ideologies, but his conception of himself and the people in his life as well. as a result, alec can look sometimes more obviously flawed than the other main cast, but the point is that the narrative asks him to examine those flaws and change and introspect and grow in a way that it doesn't always ask of other characters when they are showcasing their own flaws. which does make me thing about zuko vs. aang in the atla narrative.)

the other thing i think is contributing to zuko's more contentious status in the fandom is how long atla's been in the cultural consciousness, and how common it is for things that used to be popular to cycle through to people starting to criticize or actively hate it to people saying "no, actually, it's still pretty good, you just don't want to like a popular thing" (this is me rn), to maybe eventually getting popular again/at least in certain subsects of the audience. zuko was probably one of the most talked-about aspects of atla for a long time, and while i can understand how that could get frustrating (because there are some other really great characters and aspects of the story!), that's not, like, for no reason. people connected with and admired his story for a reason, and many still do, and (in my humble opinion) that is because it is one of the most thought-out, intentional, and nuanced character arcs of the show.

the ableism, i think, really gets to me because like... even if every criticism from the people who hate him were 100% accurate and said in good faith (they're not, but let's pretend for a minute)... that still wouldn't be an excuse for ableism against a character with a prominent facial difference (or making fun of abuse survivors for the permanent injuries they sustain from abuse.) if zuko had never redeemed himself and stayed a villain, it would still be wrong to talk about his scar and abuse the way some of his detractors do. and the show agrees with me! you know how i know? the only two characters to ever make fun of zuko's scar are villains in the narrative: zhao and azula. ("make fun of" might not be quite right for zhao, since what he said - "you have the scar to prove it" - is far more matter-of-fact than azula imitating him by covering her eye or "make sure they get your good side", but he's absolutely being a huge jerk about it.) other characters react to zuko's scar in all sorts of different ways, even when he's still in a villain/antagonist/anti-hero role: zuko's crew is horrified to learn how he got the scar, song sees a point of connection and tries to reach out to him, but, while i think well-intentioned, she breaks a major boundary by trying to touch his scar when he hasn't conveyed he's okay with that, jet makes assumptions about his background because of it, lee, the kid from zuko alone, asks with curious, childish naivete how he got it, only for his father to reprimand him for asking, aang reacts with annoyance/boredom to azula's ableist joke, and katara trips over her words to correct him when zuko thinks she's essentially calling him "scary to look at". not all of these interactions are positive, but the characters (all of whom are written as pretty sympathetic, even if also flawed) aren't outright trying to make fun of him for it, and the narrative never implies he deserves to be treated as less than because of it, even before his redemption.

anyway. if people don't believe in characters' (and, hell, irl people's) capacity for growth and change and don't want to have nuanced discussions about how trauma can impact these things, i mean... that's their prerogative, but i don't understand why they enjoy the show, because those are big parts of it (and not just wrt zuko.)

i know it can be frustrating, anon— trust me, i get very frustrated. but i promise you, there are plenty of people out there who a) still love zuko and his story and b) are capable of and willing to talk about things with nuance and in good faith. i'm happy to be part of that corner of fandom, and i bet you can manage to carve out a space where more people like that exist, too! <3
