Roman Emperor Caligula's 2,000-Year-Old Garden Unearthed Near the Vatican

The gardens overlooking the Tiber river in Italy once belonged to an infamous Roman emperor.

Construction workers in Italy have discovered a 2,000-year-old garden that once belonged to a Roman emperor.

The travertine walls of the garden overlook the banks of the Tiber, a river that cuts through Rome and sits east of Vatican City. The ruins were unearthed as workers constructed a new overpass at Piazza Pia, according to a translated statement from the Italian Ministry of Culture.

As archaeologists removed debris, they found a lead water pipe with the following inscription: "C(ai) Cæsaris Aug(usti) Germanici." Researchers determined that the engraving referred to Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Caligula (aka "little boot," a childhood nickname given to him by his father's soldiers).

Based on the inscription, researchers think the garden likely belonged to the infamous Roman emperor. Not only was Caligula known for being a tyrannical and ruthless leader, he was also a sadist who humiliated his senate. Caligula assumed the throne in A.D. 37, and in A.D. 41 the Praetorian Guard — the officials who were supposed to protect him — assassinated the emperor.

This conclusion is supported by a passage in the ancient text "On the Embassy to Gaius," penned by Egyptian philosopher Philo of Alexandria. It describes how Caligula had met with a representative of Jews living in Alexandria, Egypt, at a large garden along the Tiber, according to the statement.

At that time, Jewish Alexandrians and the Greek-Alexandrian population were in a "crisis that had manifested itself with violence, brawls and episodes of religious intolerance." However, Caligula rejected the Jews' requests for religious autonomy, instead siding with the Greeks.

Alessio De Cristofaro, an archaeologist at the Special Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Art and Landscape, a government agency in Rome, said the find is significant because Piazza Pia is in the same area as the "Horti Agrippinae," the garden of Agrippina the Elder, who was Caligula's mother.

The pipe is also similar to another one, found in the early 1900s, that's inscribed with the name Iulia (Julia) Augusta, the second wife of Augustus and the grandmother of Germanicus. Researchers speculate that the property was inherited by Germanicus and later passed down to his wife, Agrippina the Elder, before going to Caligula.

In addition to the pipe, archaeologists found slabs of Roman-era pottery and terra-cotta figures of mythological scenes that would have decorated rooftops.

My Latin is pretty rusty, but I know enough to say that it's a bunch funnier, so let me take a stab at translating. I'm breaking down the original so if I make any ridiculous mistakes through not having taken Latin in 15+ years, other people can correct me.

"Salvete, Gaius Iuli'us Caesar sum" -- Greetings, all! I am Gaius Julius Caesar

"et pilorum album quam nivem habeo et aureos," -- and I have spears that are whiter than snow and golden

"sed interdum virides lauros" -- but sometimes green laurels

"et imperium Romanum construxi" -- and I built the Roman empire

"et eius eram quasi primus Caesar (sic merui nomen meum)" -- and I was, like, its first Caesar (that's how I got my name) [note: a more literal translation is "thus I earned my name", but it's obvious that this is a direct reference to the line "that's how I got my name" in the original]

"et multi indicant mihi me Marcus Crassus similem esse (si non scitis Marcus Crassus, vobis opus est pecunia)." -- and many people say to me that I seem to be like Marcus Crassus (if you don't know Marcus Crassus, your work is money). [translator's note: "your work is money" is not a phrase I'm familiar with. Google Translate suggests "you need money" as a more idiomatic translation. My best guess is it might mean something like "you work for your money instead of being a patrician with a family inheritance".]

[note: I'm more familiar with the Lamia as a Greek female monster similar to Scylla but with only one neck. Spomenik Sibinjanin Janku in Belgrade, Serbia In July 2019, a monument of Hunyadi János was given to Zemun as a gift from the Hungarian government. The sculpture was given to commemorate the anniversary of the Siege of Belgrade in 1456, in which the  Kingdom of Hungary and Serbian Despotate held off the Ottoman Empire with help from crusader peasants and local gentry. The siege ended with a Hungarian victory, forcing the Ottomans to withdraw to Constantinople.  The creator of the monument was Hungarian sculptor Madarasi István. But after the grand opening, the moment was locally renamed to Ser Žile, since it looks like Sir Giles animated character from the 1941 Disney cartoon The Reluctant Dragon. Today Ser Žile is more of a local attraction than something foreign tourists usually visit. I gave up translating interviews lately, mostly because there’s not much to say, and if it is, it raises my pulse and I already have issues with that, but huge shout out to @airforcejuanaurelius​ for showing me Forminte’s latest interview and making my day. Gotta admit I missed the entertainment, because if you ignore the absurdity, he is quite the funny guy and below’s proof.

(Forminte mentions having 10 seniors on the NT, names 9, says he’s forgetting someone, moves on, 2 minutes later remembers Crisan) 

Golgota will go to Doha and Baku WCs to prepare for Euros. Everyone skipped Jesolo because of the flu which delayed their training. Euros Team will probably be Golgota, Ghiciuc and Iacob, or maybe a miracle will happen with Berar and Puiu and they can get up to date with their training to be able to perform.

Golgota is the only healthy one, Mihai has been out with elbow pain for 2 years - eventually had surgery, Crisan has been struggling for 2 years with a twisted ankle - turns out she will also have surgery (‘to do something to her, I don’t know what, 'cause I’m not a doctor’ - Forminte). Berar and Puiu have been out for 6 months due to ‘common pains’ (‘I’ve never seen such a generation before’ - Forminte).  Later on, he brags about how girls don’t get injured in Deva, apparently all the issues are from before, when they trained at the club.

He names several things contributing to the state of gymnastics, like how gymnasts aren’t as strong as before, you know, due to nutrition and Chernobyl (yes, he actually said that). Also, narrow selection pool, parents being too involved, no choreographer, no doctors on the NT (he has a point with the poor medical staff, though), etc. 

He mentions how, usually, when they have requests to local authorities, they usually get the standard response - ‘there’s no money’, but goes on to say that ‘fortunately, gymnastics can’t complain, as it has everything it needs to function, but we struggle with the staff, such as a choreographer, or a doctor.’ - Idk if he genuinely thinks they can’t find them in all of Romania, because, apparently, it’s not about the money?

The interviewer says he read about Larisa trying to come back and asks Forminte for more info, to which he responds ‘why would you think I'd know more about it?’ Turns out he read from the media that Larisa had the 3rd surgery and is trying to find a solution to train in Bucharest or Izvorani. She didn’t get in touch with him, so he doesn’t know what’s up with that.

Blames others for keep saying that there’s no hope for this generation which makes the girls and their parents lose motivation, totally ‘forgetting’ how he said that himself idk how many times.
