Maryland Opinion
Ok, so. It's late, but I have to share my thoughts. This is spoiler free at first:
- first of all, I am BLOWN AWAY. I loved every minute of it
- it was rather slow and pretty much completely character-driven, but gods, I could not stop watching until I had finished it
- Eve has been chronically underused in most of her roles, but this show really drove home just how much. The acting of literally everyone was phenomenal, but Eve's and Suranne's especially. There was just... so much raw emotions.
- pretty much from the first minute I loved Rosaline, and the character development was hella satisfying
- despite it being mostly tragic all-around, there was a lot of humour, mostly through Rosaline. So I really enjoyed that. And it was the sort of humour that shouldn't crack you up, but does
- all in all, it's a really good show and everyone involved should get awards for it, but I'm not sure how much general audiences will like it. Like I said, it's gripping bc of the characters and not much through the story imo
Here is the spoiler part (episodes 1-3):
- I can't help myself...I'm shipping her with the taxi driver. The scene at the lake might have been slightly cheesy but I totally melted. And the way she talked to him at his house...about her sickness. That really hit me hard.
- then there is the fight between her and Becca, where all the burried resentment comes out and she screams "this conversation makes me want to kill myself". I forgot to breathe for a moment. At the time we still didn't know that the cancer hadn't returned...
- when they read their mum's letter...the way she sobbed. Ngl it broke my heart... completely.
- when they identified their mum's body ... I just knew how their characters would react even before they got there. That's how well they established them in the first like 10min. Also...that tear...pls end me
- the way that I found most of their feelings and reactions so believable...loved it.
- but I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of love declarations and the sort of messages that their mum wrote them, or the discussion between Becca and her husband at the beach. That's the only stuff that seemed slightly artificial to me. The rest was really life-like in my opinion.
- and my concluding statement: Eve looked stunning. That's nothing new, but it had to be said.
Thank you for your attention.
#eve best#maryland#itvx drama#i loved this so much#Rhaenys and Farah have all of my heart but this is Eve's best performance imo#pls tell me your thoughts i need to know

Vogue Gets A First Look At ITV’s New Drama Joan
ITV transports viewers back to the thrilling 1980s in Joan, the new series inspired by the life of diamond thief, heist “godmother” and fashion aficionado Joan Hannington, played by the inimitable actor (and British Vogue cover star) Sophie Turner
18 September 2024
“Mother, lover, liar, thief,” is how costume designer Richard Cooke describes the roles he had to consider when building a wardrobe for the titular character of ITV’s Joan. Together with hair and make-up artist Nic Collins, who echoes his sentiment – “Joan has many personalities and characters” – Cooke speaks exclusively to Vogue about the process behind the fashion looks seen in the episodes. While Hannington’s actual style contributed to the fashion and beauty moods of Turner’s character, both Cooke and Collins looked to a vast array of references – the expansive Vogue archives, Debbie Harry and Mandy Smith, to name but a few – especially for the different disguises she takes on. “You always start with the script,” explains Nic Collins of the preparation stages of bringing her interpretation of Joan Hannington to life. “Sophie Turner is beautiful, the tiniest little bit of make-up just pops, so the transformations were really easy.”
In line with Turner’s character arc and the way her roles and responsibilities develop – from a soft young mother to completing her first heist – there is a noticeable shift in the costume, hair and make-up, cleverly curated by Cooke and Collins. For instance, the more confident she becomes, the shapes and silhouettes become “stronger and cleaner”, and the more successful she becomes, the “sleeker” her bags become. And when she assumes the role as a thief, her approach to hair and make-up is rebellious. “She decides to create her new image for herself,” Collins says of the pivot. “We took inspiration from Debbie Harry and we gave Joan an ’80s peroxide bob, black eyeliner and her classic lip. We decided to keep red as her signature lip colour. It was her taking control of her life.” “When we first see her, she’s very provincial,” says Cooke of the viewer’s introduction to Hannington. And as her journey as a thief goes on, Cooke wanted to give Joan layers to her personas. “It’s about creating armour, something to protect herself,” he says. “It’s about her creating something that she can kind of hide behind.”
One of the most pivotal moments is when Joan gets married, for which Cooke created a tailored look inspired by Bianca Jagger’s iconic Yves Saint Laurent wedding suit. “This is the closest I’ve ever got to creating something perfect,” Cooke tells Vogue of his masterpiece. Here, watch Collins outline the journey of creating such a complex character, and glimpse behind-the-scenes shots of Sophie Turner as she transforms into Joan. Stay tuned for Vogue’s exclusive video with Cooke, dropping soon.
Joan will be on ITV1 and ITVX from 29th September at 9pm

According to The Sun, a second season of Red Eye has been confirmed!
A TV insider said: “Having a follow-up series is a no-brainer for ITV, though it is somewhat unusual to be asking for a sequel before the debut series has finished airing.
“But bosses can already get a sense of how well it has been received by the viewing figures on their streaming service, ITVX.
“It’s been quite a coup for them getting Richard in a big drama too, because normally he’d be fronting one of multiple thrillers for streaming rival Netflix.”

CHARACTER BIOGRAPHIES
Jo Marshall (Sophie Rundle)
Jo’s a woman of action; she has to be doing. She joined the police to make a difference; commitment to her community is in her blood - her dad, Brendan, was a detective. They’d talk about the cases he was working on; he said she made interesting connections - and when he died - three years ago - an overwhelming ambition to follow in his footsteps really gripped her. But it’s not an ambition her overprotective husband Pat is happy about. Jo has an extremely close relationship with her own mother Molly - and since Brendan’s death, she has looked at Mackie as a surrogate father figure. Having spent her entire life in Waterside, she knows this community inside out, and they all know her. So, when it transpires that there may be a killer among them, Jo’s commitment to solving the mystery and protecting her town is dogged and unwavering. However, although her intentions are pure, her adherence to the rules is less so - and her determination to get to the truth often gets her in more trouble than she anticipated.

Yorkshire Post photographer Simon Hulme captured the shoot on location at flower shop Perfumed Garden on Harrogate Road, which has been transformed into a florist’s called Forget Me Not.
The cast – whose star names have yet to be confirmed by the producers – were seen filming scenes inside and outside of the shop on Monday.
The series is based on Louise Doughty’s bestselling novel, which is narrated by the ghost of a dead character who was in a coercive relationship with a seemingly perfect man. She witnesses a significant event on a platform at Peterborough Station which is the crux for triggering her memory.
