Sophie Turner talking about the real Joan Hannington
Sophie Turner may be known for her star-turning role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, but playing former criminal Joan Hannington in ITV's true crime drama about her life proved to be the biggest "thrill of [her] career".
The actor spoke of her admiration for her real-life counterpart at a press conference for the new drama, saying that she found the ex-thief to be a "magnetic woman" in person. ITV's new series is inspired by Hannington's memoir I Am What I Am, and recounts how she became the UK's most notorious jewel thief in the 1980s alongside her quest to reunite with her daughter who she was forced to put into foster care.
"It was amazing, it was the thrill of my career," Turner said at the event. "To be able to play someone like Joan, who's so multifaceted and is so funny, but [has] gone through so much trauma — she's so ambitious, and she's all these things, 'mother, lover, liar, thief' but there really is so much to her.
"She really is so much in one person, and I just felt it would be the biggest treat to be able to play her, and it's just remarkable that it's all a true story... inspired by."
"We actually didn't meet until really quite close to filming started. I kind of had an idea of what I was doing with the character, I pretty much had it because there's so much in Joan's book and it's so written in her own voice. I kind of soaked that up, I read it about 9-10 times, so really the last piece of the puzzle was meeting Joan.
"The minute Joan walks into a room she is the the star of that room, she's the diamond. It was her mannerisms that I hadn't quite got, and it was just the essence of her that I was missing.
"And when I finally met her I saw this magnetic woman and I really, truly understood why Boisie [Hannington's husband, played by Frank Dillane in the series], why so many people, were drawn to her the way she was drawn to her jewels."

Vogue Gets A First Look At ITV’s New Drama Joan
ITV transports viewers back to the thrilling 1980s in Joan, the new series inspired by the life of diamond thief, heist “godmother” and fashion aficionado Joan Hannington, played by the inimitable actor (and British Vogue cover star) Sophie Turner
18 September 2024
“Mother, lover, liar, thief,” is how costume designer Richard Cooke describes the roles he had to consider when building a wardrobe for the titular character of ITV’s Joan. Together with hair and make-up artist Nic Collins, who echoes his sentiment – “Joan has many personalities and characters” – Cooke speaks exclusively to Vogue about the process behind the fashion looks seen in the episodes. While Hannington’s actual style contributed to the fashion and beauty moods of Turner’s character, both Cooke and Collins looked to a vast array of references – the expansive Vogue archives, Debbie Harry and Mandy Smith, to name but a few especially for the different disguises she takes on. “You always start with the script,” explains Nic Collins of the preparation stages of bringing her interpretation of Joan Hannington to life. “Sophie Turner is beautiful, the tiniest little bit of make-up just pops, so the transformations were really easy.”
Tumblr media
In line with Turner’s character arc and the way her roles and responsibilities develop – from a soft young mother to completing her first heist – there is a noticeable shift in the costume, hair and make-up, cleverly curated by Cooke and Collins. For instance, the more confident she becomes, the shapes and silhouettes become “stronger and cleaner”, and the more successful she becomes, the “sleeker” her bags become. And when she assumes the role as a thief, her approach to hair and make-up is rebellious. “She decides to create her new image for herself,” Collins says of the pivot. “We took inspiration from Debbie Harry and we gave Joan an ’80s peroxide bob, black eyeliner and her classic lip. We decided to keep red as her signature lip colour. It was her taking control of her life.” “When we first see her, she’s very provincial,” says Cooke of the viewer’s introduction to Hannington. And as her journey as a thief goes on, Cooke wanted to give Joan layers to her personas. “It’s about creating armour, something to protect herself,” he says. “It’s about her creating something that she can kind of hide behind.”
Tumblr media
One of the most pivotal moments is when Joan gets married, for which Cooke created a tailored look inspired by Bianca Jagger’s iconic Yves Saint Laurent wedding suit. “This is the closest I’ve ever got to creating something perfect,” Cooke tells Vogue of his masterpiece. Here, watch Collins outline the journey of creating such a complex character, and glimpse behind-the-scenes shots of Sophie Turner as she transforms into Joan. Stay tuned for Vogue’s exclusive video with Cooke, dropping soon.
Joan will be on ITV1 and ITVX from 29th September at 9pm

BEST BRITISH SERIES EVER🔥🔥🔥

It didn’t make any difference though, did it? All I’ve done is give people something to talk about. And when they get bored, and the dust settles, he’ll go home. Those people will forget and… then he’ll do it again. To someone else.

Have you ever noticed by u/loufribouche
Have you ever noticed Have you ever noticed how those two gladly accept humiliation when it comes from US media?I have several examples....Ridiculous treatment of Meagain on Ellen Degeneres. The humiliating Backgrid's response after the "near catastrophic car chase"The humiliating "lazy fucking grifter" commentThe humiliating Bloomberg article outing Harry as a stupid knob who wanted to interview the Pope. The humiliating "flop era" article in Rolling Stone. The humiliating "not any kind of talent" comment from by top Hollywood agent Jeremy Zimmer. The humiliating failed mic grab at Kevin Costner's party. etc....I could go on and on with Southpark, Chris Rock, Osbourne, etc... but you get the gist. And you know what I noticed in all this?! They NEVER clap back! They go bersek about the british media, british personalities like Jeremy Clarckson. I mean..that wrench personally called ITV boss to have Piers Morgan apologize and fired if he wouldn't apologize....but in the States? They act like scared little rats. They just take it all. They can have a thick skin when they want to. They can have a thick skin when they know that people won't tolerate their crap. They can have a thick skin when they believe it's in their best interest. They chose not to when they were working royals because they always wanted to leave and were just looking for an excuse. You just can't tell me that the british media coverage is so unbearable for you that you have to leave and at the same time being totally fine with an american media that "near catastrophically chases" you, then calls you liars about the chasing and finally humiliates you via their lawyers when you request footage of the said "chase". They are a duo of cowards and liars. Wasn't "lazy" the worst thing Harry thought he could be called? (Probably because William was called that and he wanted to indirectly say that William has been called worse names than him) ...And now....he has been called just that and his lousy ass knew to keep quiet. If it was in the UK, he would already be doing interviews to clap back and talk about his persecution. Those two are a joke and only the ultra progressive zeitgeist saves them for being exposed as the lying opportunistic cowards that they are. post link: https://ift.tt/34YZucT author: loufribouche submitted: October 23, 2023 at 11:53AM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

The first signs of a new remake of The Forsyte Saga appeared on production listings at the beginning of April 2024. While there had been rumors before about the series returning to television, the pre-production announcements were the first sign the project was getting off the ground, with Mammoth Productions most likely behind it. However, it was unclear if the show was a BBC series, an ITV series, or a series made for PBS or Masterpiece, or a combination thereof. But with filming now about to get underway, details are out, and Masterpiece is the one taking the lead on the project, with a stellar cast lined up to star.
The Forsyte Saga is considered the British period piece that allowed the WGBH folks to launch the Masterpiece anthology series as PBS launched nationwide. The series was first aired in the U.K. on the recently launched BBC 2 in 1967, a network most TV viewers did not have yet. It proved so popular that it was rerun on BBC One a few months later, making it technically the first show to make the jump from network to network due to rising ratings. The series then transferred to the U.S. and aired on local PBS stations across the country (which were at that point not under a national umbrella as yet) and proved a massive hit, bringing in numbers that beat out the "Big Three" networks of NBC, CBS, and ABC. Its success proved an appetite for the best of British programming, presaging Masterpiece's launch two years later.
It's now 55 years later, and though Masterpiece aired a new version in 2002, nowadays, it is no longer just an importer. The streaming wars have made it so that the anthology series must co-produce and sometimes take the lead on commissioning shows. The choice to make its own The Forsyte Saga is unsurprising, considering the show's history and its reputation, which means that it has pulled in quite an impressive cast.
One reason Masterpiece has taken charge of the project? This way it can dictate how many seasons there are and when it is renewed. Make no mistake, this is planned as a multi-season venture. Here's the series logline:
The first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on John Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition, and betrayal.
The series cast stars Francesca Annis (Flesh & Blood) as formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann; Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co.; and Jack Davenport (Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James. The next generation down features Danny Griffin (The Gentlemen) as Jolyon Sr.'s bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey) as Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love. Joshua Orpin (Titans) plays James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son, Soames; Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) is Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with, and Tom Durant Pritchard (Miss Scarlet) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.
Outside of the titular family, Josette Simon (Broadchurch) will play Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family; Jamie Flatters (Liar) is architect Philip Bosinney, Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) plays lawyer Isaac Cole, and last (but certainly not least), OG 1967 The Forsyte Saga star Susan Hampshire OBE plays Lady Carteret.
Debbie Horsfield (Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale) will pen all six episodes, with directors Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) splitting helming duties and Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow) producing. Horsfield and Gaur executive produce along with Sheena Bucktowonsing, Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece.
The Forsyte Saga Season 1 is expected to debut on most PBS stations in 2025.
