Getting my playlists sorted for the big Move to....... my iphone......
Ick!!!
#For context:#I have multiple old phones that I've basically held onto over the years#and I try to repurpose them to give them new life and all that#One of them was a Samsung phone with a stylus that I called my Venti Phone#It was#as you might have guessed#a phone I used to play music on#like an overglorified Mp3 Player#it was great until the files on my phone started to get corrupted#So I switched to making yt playlists for a while because I just could not figure out the corruption glitch#and finally I was like “Nah I miss offline music” and was looking into getting an actual Mp3 player#turns out mp3 players suck now a days though#so Celest told me to just buy a dongle for my iphone (no headphone jack because Apple sucks) from the official Apple store.#So I did that.#And now I'm fussing about with a program that can download entire playlists off of YT#and itunes#I don't like this btw#I like having more than one “point of failure” AKA like#if my phone dies then I'll have a backup of my music and stuff for example#so I compromised and decided to buy a wallet for my ID and cards#I know this sounds like a weird compromise but I wanted to remove a point of failure from my phone#which is in a wallet case because I'm a disaster about dropping my phones and breaking screens so this plus a screen protector helps#and I usually keep my cards and stuff in the phone wallet card slots#but since I'm going to be using my iphone as a music playing device now as well....#I decided that I would buy a wallet to remove that point of failure#So that way if one gets stolen I still have the other#again I really don't like having everything on one device. And maybe one of my older phones could be a better Mp3 player.#But... bah!!#I'm mad about no headphone jack mostly tbh#Still!!!

I got my first mp3 player when I was 13. I still have it. It came with 100 free downloads from a site that probably doesn't exist anymore. I downloaded 100 songs, and listened to them nonstop for two weeks. On day 15, every one of those songs "expired", and were no longer playable. That experience has been in the back of my mind ever since, and that's why I have refused to pay for anything digital (with a couple of notable exceptions), and every bit of media I purchase is a physical disc.

I was about to complain about iTunes not having the Evolution movie soundtrack. But it turns out that my iPhone isn’t as obsolete as my iPod Touch device.

Music Discovery
Tumblr media
I enjoy music. I sometimes might even go so far as to say I love music. However, I don't think I love it as much as some people do. How do you determine if you love something? I've been to concerts. I've bought albums. I follow some bands online. I own t-shirts. Is that love? Regardless, I enjoy music.
A few years ago, I had discovered this new genre of music that I was really into but didn't know many artists within that genre. I very much wanted to listen to more of that kind of music, but I didn't know how to find some. Luckily, I eventually discovered that SoundCloud had a built-in feature that would let you listen to other songs like the song you were listening to.
I eventually came to refer to this as "music discovery". SoundCloud proved to be an excellent way for me to discover new artists within that genre and I was off to the races. In a very short amount of time, I became quickly familiar with many artists that I very much enjoyed.
I would discover new artists and songs on SoundCloud, then I would look for their music on Apple Music. If I couldn't find it there, I would look for it on the iTunes Store. If I couldn't find it there, I would look for them on bandcamp. I would almost always find them on bandcamp for this genre of music. Once I owned the music on bandcamp, I would download it and then upload it to Apple Music. And so this process would go on for a while of me bouncing around between SoundCloud, bandcamp, and Apple Music. It was a little bit of work, but I was like a kid in a candy store, it was an amazing time full of great, new musical discoveries.
In August 2023, Apple launched their own music discovery feature with the Discovery Station. Based on what Apple Music already knows about your tastes, it starts to play songs from various artists it thinks you might be into. This was like what I had been doing before, but now the loop was a lot shorter: I didn't need to bounce around between several places. I could immediately add anything I liked directly to my music library from the Discovery Station.
To be fair, it's a great effort and I'm glad Apple made it; but It isn't perfect, but I don't think music discovery can be.
I think if you're a music enthusiast, you need two components for enjoying music in 2024: a service for discovery and a service for listening. For years, I used SoundCloud for discovery (I could have just as easily used YouTube, which is also a legit way of discovering music you might like. In decades prior, people used MTV or the radio for music discovery) and I used Apple Music for listening. Today, I use Apple Music for both and I'm glad.

the fact that so many websites now require you to make an account and sign in to access any portion of them makes me legitimately unhinged
