So, I read something beautiful yesterday that I wanted to share -

'A drama is not a mere sequence of episodes: "The King died, and then the Queen died". No, a drama consists in "The King died, and then the Queen died of grief". The cause of the action, grief, is what we care about. '

And the footnote on this point made the picture literally beautiful - 'This Aristotelian structure of narrative is sometimes criticized as being culturally conditioned, but there are reasons to suggest that it derives from something basic to human experience. The chemist John C. Polanyi says "Scientia is knowledge. It is only in the popular mind that it is equated with facts. That is flattering since facts are incontrovertible. But it is also demeaning, since facts are meaningless, they contain no narrative. Science, by contrast, is storytelling. That is evident in the functioning of our primary instrument, the eye. The eye searches for shapes. It searches for a beginning, a middle and an end. We sense this from personal experience. But we know it also from experiments... The eye, viewing a person's profile, does not scan it in mechanical fashion. It does not simply point, as does a camera; it paints. Since painting is a skill, so to is seeing." (Polyani, The Responsibility of the Scientist)'

I thought that was a beautiful way to depict our reality - a dramatic unfolding - action and its cause - of the artist's (read scientist's) view of the happenings around him

This is a beautiful photo. There is so much going on. The two of them lost in their own world, we see the hands at the bottom of the screen, desperately reaching out to them, desperately wanting to be part of the experience. Miles reaching out, Alex tucking in. Both of their bodies so taut. The observer has to know she is not seeing everything, but holy god, we are seeing a lot.
