if its because they need to protect their queer identity, i can understand how it would be awful to view that and potentially field nasty comments. i just stopped engaging in provocative content with people who would upset me like my family in that case. esp since its just entertainment and something you can control. tv should be fun to watch, you know? its not politics or something important that needs dicussing at the kitchen table. although it IS a great way to open up conversations that might be prickly because if the fam like the show and characters, their opinions might be swayed. good storytelling will do that sometimes <3

Yeah, this is one argument that genuinely makes me kinda 🙄 but I do also sympathize as well.

How nonsensical to want to dictate storytelling for an individualistic mindset that is stringent upon one specific moment in your life? As if for the rest of time the television show will only exist in stasis of having watched it with your family. I think this is just coming from much younger people than me so it's like, ok, I'm not here to influence teenagers and tell them how to live their lives, but it's still a mindset that needs to be broken. Or maybe people are living with their parents as adults which is a valid thing, but at that point, you have to make your own decision. Watch it on your own. I saw this argument constantlyyyyyy about so many different media back when I was suffering on twitter, the anti-sex in media brigade going on and on and on about not wanting sex in tv and movies because it's awkward to watch stuff with their parents. Well!! That's a personal problem! Either watch less stuff with your parents or act mature about it or or or. I don't know. But that's a personal issue. Shouldn't dictate the entire catalog of media and art for all people just because of your home life situation.

Yes, and then I can definitely understand not wanting to hear vitriol about queer story lines if you yourself are queer and not out and in a situation where you cannot be and you're around your family. And yes it SUCKS to censor yourself and hide your interests, but you really don't have to put yourself in a situation if it's going to cause problems and force the issue over a TV show. i was going to dump this into @time-and-space​‘s inbox, but then it spiraled out of control and became super long. so im making it into a post. heres some thinking abt doctor who/torchwood/class/merlin parallels ! (specifically abt the parallels between tenrose/janto/charlie x matteusz/merthur) (keep in mind that my knowledge on merlin is not so good) (also feel free to correct me if im wrong or add anything on) (also this contains spoilers for ... all the shows. pls watch them, theyre good)

ive been thinking about the whole theme between charlie and matteusz where theyre like ?? scared to lose each other ?? and how it totally parallels to the other things like .... we have one character whos different and immortal and alien (not to mention the trauma they've been through-), but another who is supposedly "normal" and human. so, they work with it right ?

but then theres the ever-present danger of what they have to go through daily, and the fear that its going to leave them alone. i mean, they've already been left alone, but now that they've actually fallen in love, its different. its harder now.

consider the following lines:

"i think of it every day, and the only thing that stops me is you." (class, e6) 

"i take it all back, but not him!"(torchwood, s3e4) (theres probably a better quote but no think, head empty)

"i could save everyone, but lose you." (doctor who, uhhh idk but i swear the doctor said something like it at some point, pls correct me if im wrong)

and yes, theyve felt this before, the pain of their entire race being wiped out, no one left but them, and everyone seems to leave them in the end. but for one second, they stop and actually think they have a chance for a while. someone who might stay.

ALSO it works as like .... the normal person is scared of the other, scared of what they can do and how they are ....

consider the following lines:

"im afraid of who you are, of what you're capable of, of what you will do" (class e6)

"you like to think you're a hero, but you're the biggest monster of all." (s1e4)

"what about you, doctor? what the hell are you changing into?" (doctor who, s1e6)

the person who has been through so much is capable of doing so many things, and sometimes it scares the other one. but they witnessed genocide ! and theyre probably traumatized over it ! theyve probably done some terrible shit as a result of it ! both of them are so valid in being that way.

and another parallel i have just thought of, mentioned a lot already, but the recurring theme of killing off an entire race and how that affected the alien character ....

consider the following situations:

doctor who - the time war, in which the doctor participated, and eventually ended. // when 9 was planning to kill off the last of the daleks in the parting of ways, hesitating for a bit, knowing that it would end up destroying earth in the process, making them no better than what the daleks are

torchwood - jack's planet and how it got invaded, how his parents died as a result and why his brother did everything that happened in exit wounds. // ummm i think maybe how willingly jack was able to give the girl up to the fairies to save the human race, like hes seen what the fairies are capable of, hes seen what disasters mass murder can bring. he doesnt want to see it again. 

class - well, the shadowkin invasion, both on rhodia and when it happens on earth (both times) but also the invasion with the flowers ? // how much he really wants to just kill the shadowkin like ! he even mentioned it once ("i want to murder the shadowkin. every last one ...." e6) and he just wants to do it out of revenge. but “we shouldnt avenge genocide with genocide” (we're not going to talk abt how the only thing stopping him is that he would lose matteusz in the process)

but yeah ! theyve seen first hand what it like, and when prompted to do the same thing themselves, they end up hesitating, eventually choosing the other option instead. (well... except charlie. he does it once at least.) 

and finally, immortality. this ties in a lot w my first point abt losing the other person .....

doctor who - pretty easy to think about, the doctor has had so many companions over the years, and each time they end up leaving them. even after he meets rose, who wished to stay together forever ("how long are you gonna stay with me?" "forever.") but then she ends up leaving, the doctor is left to continue on for so much longer ..

torchwood - pretty same as above, jack never commits himself to a relationship, he knows everyone will leave him anyway. but then he meets ianto jones. and it all changes, he falls in love, which he said he would never do, and thats why he doesnt ever say "i love you," because once he says it then he cant deny it any longer. once he says it than he will have to admit that ianto, someone that he does love, is lost to him.

class - ok, charlie isnt technically immortal from what i know, but i am assuming he probably has a longer lifespan than humans (basing this off this line - "you want to know who would be the last one standing out of the five of us? i would." e6) so ! its mentioned a lot (and is the main theme, as i said earlier) that matteusz and charlie dont want to lose each other. i want to specifically point out the line “every day i think, please dont go where i cant follow.” (e8) because it just so implies that charlie is different. he can go places, live longer than matteusz ever can. 

going to add this onto the end here, but i just thought that actually merlin kinda fits into this too ! 

loss - the loss of his father, of his one childhood friend (will?), the knights of the round table (pretty sure a lot of them die too, correct me if im wrong) and even arthur who leaves in the end. everyone around him just seems to leave or turn bad 

fear - we all know merlin is powerful, right ? i mean i swear it says somewhere hes like ... the greatest sorcerer to ever live or smth. and yes, arthur doesnt technically fear him, but if we think about what would have happened if merlin revealed his magic earlier, when camelot was still under the rule of uther and arthur was still scared of ppl w magic .... idk abt this one ndjnsjd it works in my head okay

trauma - had to get some help from @a-confused-contradictory-mess​ here and she brought up some good points ! when he was younger, because of his magic, he never really fit in. his mother made him hide, because she feared what would happen if he found out. (i ... think?) imagine what that does to someone, having to hide something about yourself for so long.

immortality - after everyone leaves around him, theres kinda no escape. he has to live with it for all the years that his immortal life goes by. this ties in a lot w how jack and the doctor feel, with everyone around them making them left all alone. 

tldr: losing the one person they always thought would stay, one being scared of the other's power, the trauma affecting one of them, immortality and the price that comes w it are all some really good parallels between these ships/shows and genuinely kill me inside

- travis and connor stoll r way too underrated. the two have been head counselors of the hermes cabin since luke was revealed as a traitor, can u imagine the stress? luke, the person they probably looked up to as a brother, betrayed them. and they didnt even have time to process this when they were  thrown the roles of being hcs. that would have been so stressful and i would probably have broken down if i were them. the stoll brothers taking turns to wake up at ungodly hours because a new camper is crying and homesick and terrified, the stoll brothers having to comfort and take care of new campers, having to deal with the amount of people in that cramped space because not enough campers are being claimed fast enough. having to resolve issues between campers in the hermes cabin all the time. the stolls arent just comedic relief, and we need to stop treating them as such

HOWEVER, i have seen multiple posts BY pocs talking about how they didnt really like rick’s representation of piper, and thats an issue. pocs have been and are still oppressed and discriminated against by many. as a white cis man, we cant really blame him for not knowing (tho he could have done a research,, asked some pocs,, idk), but by representing pocs in that manner, hes influencing impressionable kids/teens into thinking “oh pocs wear feathers in their hair all the time” etc, which isnt true. the pjo/hoo series is extremely successful, and kids who read the books will probably start forming inaccurate opinions on pocs. the amount of fan art that depicts piper with feathers in her hair dont help either. “but rick said so in the books, so its canon” yeah well rick isnt a god and he can get some things wrong at times. im not saying we should cancel him, im saying we should start educating ourselves and not spread false info like pocs wearing feathers in their hair all the time. also that snake song shit where she sang Summertime was just- yeah. bc heres the thing you can be racist, and still include minorities, but portray them in a racist way. And even then, ignorance isn't a thing to admire. Getting those facts wrong still has a major impact. It continues to perpetuate racist stereotypes.

- the fact that most of the strong female characters in the series refuse to be “girly”, and ngl i dont really like that. just because ure girly doesnt mean u cant be strong. 

- piper would have been a great way for him to start making the strong characters act girlier, but instead he went with the “I’m not like other girls” trope which is quite obnoxious to hear constantly, and I don’t think it’s necessarily great for younger girls to read that idea growing up.  the closest we've ever had to a strong female character who was also into "girly" things was Silena. when I was younger I admired Piper's "I'm not like other girls" thing, but then I got older and realized that the whole mentality of "not like other girls" is super obnoxious, and a little bit toxic

I've been thinking about coming out to my mom and dad about being non-binary. I know my moms stance, she accepts LGBT. She won't let testosterone into my system til im 18 and know exactly want I want tho lol, which is fine! I'm transfem and I can understand why she thinks that. Thing is, I don't know my dads stance, though that'll be for a different ask.

Thing is, is that I use it/they pronouns. I'm sure I can tell them how to use both. Like, 'it went to the park, but ended up playing by themselves', things like that. My issue is that I don't know how they'll react to the 'it' pronoun. They might completely shake their heads and go 'we're not calling you a thing' or whatever. I can live without being called 'it', but I feel like I should still say it just in case. I don't want to suddenly go from 'oh im it/they' to 'shit im it/its' and have them call me 'they' and make me uncomfortable. i think telling them i use it/they is a better decision, but i'd really hate to see their reactions

Aaaanyways, so you wanna go by it/they? I can totally play devil's advocate and see why your parents wouldn't want to do the whole it thing. I'm gonna be real with you, I personally don't understand how it/it's would work as a pronoun, so like I can only really speak from on side. However, if that's what you want, then I'd say go for it. You can't control how people react no matter what. Nothing you do is going to change how they eventually react, so you might as well get that part out of the way as soon as possible. I think they're just going to have to adjust to it. Like I think the explaining thing is a really good idea. It might take them a hot sec to get on board and understand the whole thing, but practice makes perfect.

Back in ye olden days, which I think was like, five years ago so not that old, they/them was the thing to be weird about, and now they/them are being accepted more often. I think that's gonna be the way it works for you. I'm not saying that it'll take five years, I really hope not, but you might have to play the long game. Correct them when you need to, explain how you feel that way, so on so forth. It really boils down to what you think is the right move is, and what you're most comfortable with. - So in addition to that, he had always been a very active, youthful and energetic kid which was pretty much something he got from his dad since he sort of kept things playful and always did the best that he could while his mom was on the stricter side but instead knew how to teach him things that were important !!

- So growing up he always made friends very easily because of how open he was ( except that time when he brought this girl home at the age of 7 because he thought she’d make a cool pet ) and because he was always vERY friendly, even if he had a tendency to be too nice at times and just got upset when people didn’t like him ?? which is honestly still the case

- Of course he loved being popular which is kind of his aspiration in most things nowadays?? he seeks to be liked so much it’s sometimes a lil sad but he will legitamately try anything to make you his friend and he wont care if ur bothered because at least then he’ll get a reaction out of you !! but yeah it’s something he never really learned bc he’s used to getting validated from his parents so he genuinely doesn’t COMPREHEND meanness ://

- It was when he was around ten ( 10 )  years old when his dad randomly moved to New York ?? which was honestly super scary to him but his mother assured him that it was for a special job which was definitely weird for him because that was the only thing she ever said when he asked her about his father and ofc zane wasn’t dumb just a little idiotic !!

- They still visited his father often where Zane was able to get to know America and New York a little better, which he definitely enjoyed even though he sort of preferred Canada always because he likes snow a lot and the fact that it kind of melts when you pee on it but anyway he was getting a bit more suspicious as he grew older

- Then on his sixteenth birthday he was able to visit his dad once more to which he then was revealed that his dad was the ring leader of a spy business !! WOW to which Zane was baffled of course bc his dad ??? who tripped over his 7th birthday cake because Zane saw a squirrel and started to chase it ?? exactly !!

- So of course, Zane wanted to start working there !! Not only because of curiosity but school was kind of boring ( ngl ) and he missed his dad a lot so while his mother was not happy about his choice at all she always believed in people doing whatever they wanted so without much time passing the male moved to New York and started working for his father !!

- it was quickly noticiable that Zane wasn’t great at spy work, considering he was incredibly clumsy and was always distracted by everything and almost shot off his left toe ONCE okay it was only onCE !! Anyway his father got a little frustrated with his chaotic energy so he gave him the jobs were he was usually with someone else so they could babysit him which was honestly better for him too bc he could make friends !!

-  So when he was around 19 that’s when he got to know his boy Landon, his main squeeze, one could even say the love of his life ( only he would say that ) but they immediately vibed with Landon being his driver even though they lowkey ended up doing stuff that completely wasn’t what his dad wanted but Zane was honestly just loving life and just doing a bit of shady stuff with his buddies was bonding ??

- HOWEVER NOT ALL THINGS CAN BE SUNSHINE AND CAKE; so they often kind of got into trouble ?? they were good at hiding and sort of running from the cops a couple of times but honestly not that much of a big deal as Zane would say but once upon a time, these assholes rlly got caught ahead of their time to which Landon then got away in time with someone from Gallagher helping while Zane honestly didn’t know what was happening n got caught ??

- To which he then ended up in jail for a year !! love carrying contraband while being high as fuck !! anyway, it was a very self reflecting time . even though he sort of learned nothing ?? anyway not even his dad could bail him out, only shorten the time if he in return joined Gallagher, a school where he would learn how to behave and use his spy knowledge to some good instead of just causing trouble !!

- Which he honestly didn’t vibe with so much because he was kind of scared of these spy kids ?? legit all of them could kill them w a look he wasn’t sure was his dad was thinking but that’s also why he chose medicial training, in order to not get hurt and if he did, he would be able to take care of himself which honestly wasn’t that much of a help when he was about to bonk this girl but ended up hitting his dick against the ground as they rolled around ?? he doesn’t wanna talk about it

- Anyway, he sort of grew into Gallagher for the most part, since he is a very adaptable person in general and was looking forward to making friends with people who were way cooler than him which was honestly a plus !! he just vibing y’all there ain’t no problem at all at all

PERSONALITY & LITTLE QUIRKS

- He’s super chaotic and all over the place, loves talking about anything and everything and sort of philophises over the most mundane things because its fun to talk about life y’all

- He has a super colorful taste in clothing and decoration and is pretty extraordinary in most things in life, whether its sunglasses or flowers on his backpack and shirts and stuff that’s way too big

- Is a slow talker and also doesn’t understand people who talk fast

- Has a habit of interrupting people mid-conversation and doesn’t realize that it could appear rude

- Loves everyone, is also super affectionate and always has an arm around his friends or will at least ask for conSENT bc that matters to him but he will most likely touch u some type of way im sorry

- Probably because he is super fidgety too, he legit has his hands everywhere all the time because he doesn’t like to stay still

- Somewhat of a class clown and certainly does not enjoy studying or any school related work so he’s kind probably always on the verge of failing ?? idk how he does it you guys

ok ok jokes, ill go more in depth... some of this is taken from things ive written before but not posted. also for anyone reading this im non bee nary so know that im not trying to describe the experiences of different identities in first-person, i’m basing this off of both my own and my friends’ experiences... none of this is “OMG YES CHARACTER ANGST >:))” but rather depicting personal struggles in fictional characters, so just know that  the more difficult subjects that may be covered are not there just to see the character in pain, but rather to think about their eventual resilience against it and development afterwards

for geralt and yennefer i have more specific reasons why i think being transgender actually fits with their canonical characters & related story arcs, and then for the rest i have headcanons and maybe some reasoning but not a lot.

geralt: geralt already represents how a struggle with toxic masculinity and expectations of masculinity can influence one who wants to be seen as masculine to deny and bury their emotions. him being trans develops upon the aspect of his struggle with emotions, ive seen my friends who are transmasculine / myself when i used to ID as transmasculine struggle with showing emotions bc of feeling like you’re going to be misgendered if you shed a single tear. in canon, we already learn that kaer morhen has a bit of a macho culture (just fyi eskel and lambert and coen are trans too now, don’t go getting any idea that those guys are cis) and i believe that the “witchers have no emotions” thing is like 5% actual biology and 95% being raised to fight and not to feel. vesemir is a good father but he just wasn’t very emotionally nurturing, it’s the caste’s way of raising kids that geralt breaks out of.

i think geralt’s self-image also speaks a lot to the feelings of harsh internal transphobia. he constantly others himself from others and feels like people view him as different, which is metaphorical for any marginalized group under the sun, but also is very common for lgbt ppl. again this is smth ive really struggled with within the past few years so im just projecting/know what it feels like and feel that how geralt sees himself in canon is similar to a view suffering from internalized transphobia.

geralt's character already redefines manhood because he has to learn what it means to be a good father. and i think him being trans would be representative of his constant learning and growth as a person, yet also somewhat involved with his self loathing and feeling like just Him Existing is an affront ... but of course he unlearns this with time and love from others and all of his character development

yennefer: yennefer’s whole backstory revolves around defining who she is and defying the people who mistreated her and told her she was nothing. canonically yennefer of vengerberg is the story of the successful self-made woman... her life as janka she would rather forget, no one calls her by that name, and no one ever would because its not who she is nor who i think she ever was. 

shes incredibly strong-willed and knows what she wanted from life but some things are terrifying to reach out for, like love and acceptance. yennefer has a conflict with love and being loved because that was never a safe topic for her ... (also sapkowski handled this specifically poorly imo, but:) yennefer canonically struggles with being loved for who she is. i think she deals so much with her previous abuse and again, expectations from parents, and coming to terms with the fact that she survived it all. also this isnt even touching upon her arc regarding motherhood. wanting to give a child your everything and everything that you never had... the love and kindness that no one gave you...

ciri: ciri hesitated to ever identify with “girl” or “boy,” she’s also i think the representation of childhood in general, she’s naturally curious about gender presentation as she ages and just never really cares to commit to gender. i think she’d say she was a girl but only reluctantly bc she just doesn’t care much.

ok in a more serious context i think he’s a nonbinary guy, i think him being trans might explain why he has way more friendships than relationships with family members. dandelion, like yennefer, is also someone that had to define who he was for himself, i mean for one his stage persona of dandelion is entirely an artist’s creation/hyperbole of himself, i think he also had to think abt his inner identity too

his gender is also just “your friend that comes to your house and eats all ur chips and drinks all ur beer and passes out on top of you on the couch”

milva: ok unfortunately i currently think milva is the token non-trans friend (she’s nonbinary just doesnt think of herself as trans) but it’s only because her major arc in baptism of fire revolves around her pregnancy and miscarriage and just bc she is not trans doesn’t mean she doesn’t go through her own difficult struggling process surrounding her womanhood. she struggles enormously throughout the series and in her backstory with defining herself between two rigid identities: the feminine maria and the cutthroat milva. in her talk with geralt, she reveals how she feels trapped between these two identities and feels like they cannot coexist. i feel like she’s a nonbinary/gender non-conforming butch* lesbian whose struggles with sexuality intersect her struggles with gender and what it means to her to be a gnc woman. also you have to consider that milva was raised in a small village in lower sodden so she understood gender in the very strict roles ascribed to men and women, so she felt like she couldn’t be a woman unless she was this very traditional idea of what a woman is “supposed to be like,” which she’s both been trying to shape herself to be and also running away from simultaneously. she learns to accept herself within the hansa bc they love and support her for who she is, and she doesn’t need to be strictly feminine or masculine to be understood by them

* i know the terms nonbinary and gnc and butch didn’t exist in the 1260s tyvm, i’m just saying this as how i interpret her in a modern context

regis: gender is a human sociological construct so basically don’t ask him unless you’re prepared to listen for 20 minutes. vampires can exist noncorporeally so they can exist without gender, also i hc the telepathic vampiric language is nongendered as it’s a transmission of pure thought, will, and force, so it doesn’t even use any grammar. i also hc that vampires just appear the way they feel in terms of appearance and age (e.g., regis at around 300 when he died still looked 25 bc he was as stupid as a 25 year old, now he’s calmer and understands more, so he looks middle-aged). when chilling out with humans regis will be referred to as a man bc that’s just how he appears but it’s an identity he had to learn about and adopt, not something he was assigned. most vampires look androgynous anyways bc they just feel androgynous, how are you gonna feel a gender when you don’t know what a gender is... if you HAD to understand him with human labels / put it in a modern context (like if i was making an modern real life AU) i’d say he’s a nonbinary trans man. 

cahir: much like geralt i think cahir’s story is one of living up to expectations, but cahir’s actually takes it a step further because his major motivation in his backstory is trying to prove to his mother that he can be a good son that will make her proud and gain honor for the family... he seeks validation from external sources but faces ruin when he learns that war is not the way to prove one’s prowess and skill

angouleme: shes trans and i simply say so bc shes very cool and funny and i dont think a cis person could be this cool and funny. also i think the story of a runaway teen who was abandoned by her biological family and found solace in a new family is both very good and featured in a lot of trans ppl’s narratives. she kind of exudes this “im finally at a point in my life where i’m safe and cared for, i can start HRT now, let’s gooOOoooOOooo” energy.

When I started learning to drive at 17, I decided to buy my self a cheap car so that I'd be able to get more experience behind the wheel, pass my test quicker and have a car as soon as I passed my test. I was insured on my provisional license with an insurance company which specialised in learner drivers. However, I ended up getting 3 points on my license the week before I passed my test, in what I still think were pretty unfair circumstances. My house doesn't have a drive or a garage and so I had to park my car on the road in front of my house, or on a street round the corner when there were no spaces. As it was my first car I was really excited, and without understanding that I could get in trouble for it, I used to sometimes sit in my car and listen to music with my friends. The week before I passed my test we were sat chatting when a police car came down the road and pulled up behind us. Someone had broken into some allotments nearby and they were questioning us as to if we had seen anything. They searched my car- for tools that could suggest we had done it I presume, and when they found nothing they ran my license and obviously realised I only had a provisional license. I still at this point didn't realise I had done anything wrong, I wasn't driving the car, simply sat in it so I didn't realise I had committed an offence. The police informed me that because the engine was running, I could have been driving or about to drive and on that basis they convicted me for driving without a license. I only got 3 points and a 60 fine due to the fact I wasn't actually driving and at the time I accepted that with relief, I was terrified I'd get a ban or lose my license or get a massively unaffordable fine. I could have appealed but that would have meant going to court and I was only 17 and that terrified me. I declared the points to my insurance company straght away, but due to the nature of the offence my insurance was invalidated and void. I've only just now realised how serious having insurance voided in the past is. I'm supposed to be moving a 5 hours away in a few months for a job, and I have plenty of money saved for car insurance and a car, as without a car, the move is completely unrealistic. Without a car I won't be able to get to work as the hours are unsocial and my job isn't very well connected with public transport at all and so relying on public transport or taxis is simply not an option. I found a car, went to get an insurance quote, and found out that getting insurance is practically impossible when you've had insurance voided in the past. The points don't seem to be a problem, when I tell companies about my points but not about my insurance voided in the past they happily give me a quote. They're expensive, but affordable and it's what I was expecting. However, as soon as I tell them that my insurance was voided in the past they refuse to even give me a quote. I'm completely out of options and I don't know what to do. I need a car, but I can't get insurance as much as I try. I know I was in the wrong, but it seems like the voided insurance is more of a punishment than the points are and surely that isn't right? And the voided insurance will stay with me for the rest of my life, so does that mean that driving will never be an option for me? I'm sorry for the essay, I just really don't know what to do! Im Jaebum x Reader

Summary: The one where Im Jaebum’s cold heart melts, just a little.

Author’s Note: This chapter was going to be much longer, but it felt too rushed so I kept this short. Not entirely sure anymore where I want this story to go so this is so shitty wow sorry bye

Chapter 1

Safe to say, Jaebum wasn’t expecting that answer. He wasn’t actually sure what he was expecting asking something like that, but it was definitely not that one. To him, her reply only meant one thing. She knew what it felt like to be all alone when you’re not okay.

From his peripheral vision he could see her walk to a bench a little to his left, sit down and light something, which he could only guess was a cigarette. He sighed to himself, why did he always have to be so harsh? How many people wanted to make some stranger at a park was doing okay because they knew how it felt to be alone when you're not okay? He appreciated whatever it was in people that made them care. He appreciated it because he was so void of it.

Reaching to his right to retrieve a cigarette for himself, he almost groaned out loud when he noticed that he was all out. He must have not realised that his pack was almost over before leaving his dorm. For a little while, he just sat staring ahead, wondering if he should try to find a convenience store nearby and risk buying it himself. Usually their staff would buy it for them, risking an idol buying cigarettes wasn’t good for business. Then an idea struck him.

She was lost in her music, trying to drown out the thoughts that made it difficult for her  to breathe. There was so much she needed to still figure out; about her life, her interests, what she really wanted to do after she was done with her studies, so many more questions than she had answers for. And to think she used to believe that leaving her family home would be enough. It was good to be living alone without her extremely slightly overbearing parents, to be able to make the little decisions for herself without having to explain it to them, but what it didn’t do was give her the answers she was looking for.

She didn't even know how she had landed up in Korea, when she applied to a Korean university over 2 years ago, she hadn’t ever thought she would actually get accepted. But next thing she knew, she had her acceptance letter in her hand and everything was a whirlwind until she landed here and reality hit her. It wasn’t like she stuck out too much, she had a couple of more tattoos than the ladies on the streets would like, but nothing about that was new to her. That was actually the part that made her feel less homesick.

But homesickness is something no one warns you about and it transpires in the weirdest possible ways. For her, the feeling of an unknown city was exciting on the good days but on the bad days it was a mixture of being homesick, missing her go to comfort foods and her comfort people, and an overly anxious mind. Nothing about such nights helped her depression either, and she its not like she could afford therapy here. She was a college student, and even though she could probably afford it if she picked up an extra shift at work and got a little help from her parents, she already felt she was a burden enough to ask for more.

So that plan had been put on the shelf until she had a more stable means of earning as well as less student loans to pay off; and until then, parks, cigarettes and music would have to suffice.

She had a great bunch of friends, very in number but they cared for her like family. But she hated bringing them down with her, so running away and being alone was the best solution she could think of to avoid that, and also get her own head in order.

He approached her park bench, unsure of just how to go about a conversation with someone he had brushed off so harshly. He wasn’t used to this, simply because he usually would never do this. But he really needed to smoke, and she was right there. And somewhere in his cold, dead heart (as most people referred to his heart as, and he agreed) he felt bad about how harsh he had been. He could see that she had earphones on, and her cigarette was forgotten, she was zoned out. That ruled out his initial plan to clear his throat from a safe distance to catch her attention and see how it went from there.

He decided on getting her attention by tapping her shoulder, hoping the action wouldn’t surprise her too much. She jumped a little at his touch, but nothing too dramatic. She took her earphones out as she looked up at him, mouth slightly agape.

“You..You’re…”

“Im Jaebum, yes” he interrupted her before she could say anything else. “Will that get in the way of me bumming a cigarette off you? I’m all out”

He showed her the empty packet he still held in his hand, and she took a moment to collect herself.

“You being Im Jaebum won’t get in the way of that” she started to say, and Jaebum physically relaxed, before she continued, “But you being a rude ass will”

He smiled sheepishly at her, she was headstrong, and she wasn’t going to give into him just because she realised who he was. Whoever this weird girl making sure other strangers were ok in parks was, he liked her.

“I apologise for my behaviour, I am known to not have the best reactions to…well, most things in life. It’s a handicap if you will”

She was quiet for a moment, just looking up at him to gauge whether his apology was honest or not.

“Okay”

She grabbed her own pack from the bench and held it out to him. He took one, and took a seat besides her.

“Is it like a normal thing for you to go up to strangers in parks?” he asked before he proceeded to light his cigarette.

She gave him an incredulous look before she looked ahead and sassed answered him.

“So much for being nice to the heartthrob of Korea”

He snickered. He wasn’t sure what his reaction would have been if someone else said the same things as her, but for once he didn’t mind being talked to like an actual human being instead of this perfection that could do no wrong.

“Well, thank you for that compliment, but in case you haven’t noticed, Korea isn’t really into this heartthrob”

It was no secret that GOT7, including Jaebum, weren’t all that popular in Korea. Their international fanbase was much larger than their home fanbase, and he had come to appreciate the freedom that brought. Not that he didn’t sometimes feel bad when they didn’t win as many music shows as other groups, but he had learnt to deal with it.

“Doesn’t stop you from getting mobbed if I remember correctly” she pointed out.

He couldn’t argue there, she had a valid point. He nodded, not sure of what to reply.

“Is it normal for you to be smoking in abandoned parks?” she asked.

“Actually…it is. That’s kind of sad huh?”

“Not really. Its pretty common for me too” she admitted, smiling at him for the first time.

He smiled back, nodded, and then they both fell silent. They sat in each other’s presence, surprisingly comfortable in the silence, trying to figure out their own minds.

After a while, she spoke up.

“Do you ever not know where your life is going? I mean, you are successful and you have a path you’ve chosen, but do you get lost anyway?”

He thought about her question for a while, and if he was being honest, he was always lost. He snowballed into this life instead of actually making a conscious decision about it. One thing had led to another, but he started out as just someone who loved to dance.

“I think I’m still lost” he answered honestly. “I know it may seem I am on a path but I don’t even know what it is. I'm supposed to be this escape for people, but I'm not sure what I am to myself”

She didn’t reply, mulling over what he said. She didn’t relate to him entirely, but she could put herself in his shoes. The kind of pressure he must feel, how lonely it must get being an idol.

“That was too deep wasn’t it?” he asked

“No, I’m just thinking”

He nodded, asking a question of his own, “What made you ask me that?”

She sighed, “Well, I’m lost too. I thought coming to Korea would be a great thing, thought it would give me the answers I was looking for. And don’t get me wrong its been a pretty great 2 years but I’m still searching for the same answers. I thought I would have at least some major answers by now, but I’m still stuck somewhere or the other”

“And what are those answers if I may ask?”

“You sure you wanna know? Most people hate this shit”

When he didn’t reply, just waiting for her response patiently, she continued.

“I am looking for answers to what I really wanna do in life. I’m not even sure what the meaning of my existence is, and I don’t just want to live an absolutely meaningless life. To be honest, when I got into kpop, I was almost jealous of your lives. Because whatever it might be, it was more productive a life than the one I was leading. And I know that is unfair to you because I can’t even imagine the hardships of being an idol, but yeah, selfishly I am jealous”

He thought over what she said. He was a little surprised to know that she was jealous of what she was jealous of, and not the fame and money.

“Too rambly wasn’t it?” she said, letting out a small laugh at herself.

“Yeah it was, but it makes sense. But I don’t think anyone ever finds out the meaning of life. I think we keep searching for that much longer than we realise”

“Touche”

The rest of their night was spent talking about existential things that most people found too heavy or too depressing to talk about. But there was a strange comfort in talking to a stranger about such things. When they noticed daylight breaking, he offered to walk her back to her dorm if she was okay with it, and she agreed.

On the way, she offered to buy him coffee for dropping her back and that is how it began; their weird, existential friendship. And that was a year ago.
