Nys can’t sleep.

Through Lillian’s steady, sleeping breaths and the filtered moonlight of the window, he can practically feel the clock ticking, the hours wasting away. And they know, they do, that they should be trying, at the very least, to sleep. To close his eyes, and quiet his mind.

But his brain is restless, and so’s his body.

So he counts the time between each of Lillian's breaths (7 seconds on inhale, 8 on exhale), and the number of knots in the wood grain in the planks of Lillian’s bunk (3, one in the top left corner, and the other two middle-right), and he even tries counting sheep.

Nothing works. His mind is still in overdrive.

It’s been a long day. Since waking up in the hospital, their memory had been fragmented, mixing up what happened when and how. And Nys’ brain has seemingly decided that this is the perfect time to try and process it.

He replays and organizes his thoughts and memories, staring at Lillians bunk above them.

The fight. Lillian brought him to a monster fight to distract them

At some point, they fell. No, they were pushed, some guy had shoved himself to the front, breaking the railing and pushing Nys in. Asshole. At least he left his glasses in their room, so he didn’t have to replace them.

Then they’d been face to face with the beast, and it’d had that look in its eyes.

The next part is fuzzy: lurching forward, a sword to the chest, terror, pain, darkness. And then they’re in hospital, and the guy who stabbed him is his nurse, somehow, and the doctor who healed him up just had to fucking comment on Nys absorbing her fucking magic.

Nys gives in to the ever present need to move, and performs one of the only acts of magic he can. 

Their feet hit the floor soundlessly, and as Nys paces, he feels the telltale trickling, like sand through an hourglass, of each creak and groan from the floorboards being absorbed. His chest and back twinge from the movement, but Nys needs to move, and at least like this, there’s no sound to wake Lillian, and no one to comment on Nys doing magic.

Because that’s the thing, isn’t it? Everyone always has to comment, always have to act like the truth isn’t so glaringly obvious that it makes them look stupid when they act like it’s all a matter of trying.

“Just do it, it’s not that hard.”

“You just need to try harder.”

“Just light the candle.”

“You’re just being lazy.”

Just, just, just.

Nys is always just being something, being difficult, being weak, when it comes to magic.

No one ever wants to look at someone like them and think that, maybe, just maybe, subtractive magic is a thing that regular, everyday people have. That, maybe, no, he’s not being difficult, he quite literally can’t just do it, he can’t just light the fucking candle, he can’t just do magic the same way it’s done with balanced magic. They can’t do it because it would use up a dangerous amount of his energy.

He can’t just do it.

He’s just tired.

But as much as Dr Vult’s comment had grated on him, the conversation Nys had had with the high priestess that morning had eaten at them more, had since they left for the fight.

Because the Order of Lantern’s didn’t want them anymore. Didn’t want him, because they thought Nys had gone too far. 

Because “Violence is never the answer” and Nys “should have known better, should be better”.

Really, Nys should have known better to think that anyone would ever want them once they caught a glimpse of the terrified, angry, violent thing that lived in his chest.

No matter how justified it had been.

Fuck, he’s tired.

So Nys tries, once more to sleep, to shut his eyes and shut the world out.

And yet after everything, after after being fucking stabbed, it’s still the look in the beast’s, the lion’s, eyes that haunts him. It’s burned into their eyelids.

He opens his eyes, and he lays there, splayed out as much as he can and eyes wide open.

Cal had said the beast would be locked up until the morning.

Lillian had said that they wouldn’t be doing anything tomorrow (today?).

The window didn’t lock.

The decision came easily, and suddenly Nys was getting dressed, shuffling out the window, and sprinting through the cool night air. He had a monster to find.

i really wanna hear more about the 2ps possessing their 1ps?? do they swap bodies or does their original body just go limp?

a) it's not quite a "body swap." the phrase i've used in past writings for it is "overwriting." i think "suppression" would also be appropriate. the 1ps are, if all goes to plan, "put to sleep". they essentially become a repressed memory. oliver set it up like this because he didn't want the 1p nations trying to constantly win back their body. even so, some nations put up a real fight as they're overwritten (and maybe even a little after if they're strong/stubborn enough... ahem ahem america) italy is not one of them though, partially because 2p italy got him in his sleep.

b) yeah they just go limp lol . they're empty husks, now. free meat. england would try a bite if it canada would let him

I hate the stretch lines in the front of Curly's uniform because that means the devs rushed to make a model in like a month or so and thought "They gotta at least know he has huge knockers, gotta know he's got back pain." Cause like what is the thematic importance of his tits having overhang?

What responsibility is that representing? Breast reduction? It shows an inherent greed in his character due to the excess and heshouldletmeholdone and that he clearly is blinded cause if he tries to look down his damn ladder all he's seeing is his own cleavage.
