In my mind, I was flashing back to Lazarus Rising and seeing him walk through the barn with the sparks flying and all of the sudden all of these clips in my mind of Castiel and walking into the lake, and all of these things that are ingrained in my memory and seeing this now character have to say goodbye, but also knowing that my friend was in there having to struggle with this as well and I just thought he did such an artful job and such an incredibly nuanced performance in that moment that I was really proud of." x

Azul grips the sleeve of your pajamas, lower lip wobbling as you stroke his hair. There was no need for you to come out here just for him, and now he has to compensate you somehow even though you’d never accept his payments and that was just so confusing but it wasn’t like that matters anyway because you’re here now and he can’t just shoo you away.

“Don’t you have better things to do?” Azul asks, not because he wants you to leave but because he also does.

“Than be here for you? No.” you answer, and it’s so sincere that Azul feels tears spill over his red cheeks.

His sniffling must have reached your ears by now but you just keep holding him, cradling him like he isn’t disgusting or ugly but lovely and wonderful and treasured. He wants to be those things so bad for you. But more importantly, he needs to be those things for himself.

That’s what you’d say. He knows you would.

“Love is a song that never ends, life may be swift and fleeting...” you hum, breaking him out of the walls he’s constructed around his heart, “Hope may die, yet love's beautiful music comes each day like the dawn...”

He doesn’t understand.

He doesn’t understand how you see a sniveling little octopus in your arms and decide to sing a song about love to him.

He doesn’t feel ready to understand. So he shuts his eyes and listens to you sing, feels you encase him in your love, and drifts off into the most peaceful sleep he’s ever had.

The world is an ancient society in modern day. Perhaps buildings and ruins have been around since the ancient Greeks, it’s as if New York had been around when Odysseus had. A full-fledged city with settings of ruins and current families are descendents of heroes and rulers of long ago. There are modern weapons, there are guns and such weapons like those… But in a city so ancient, magic lies beneath, and often on the black market as well. Spell books, specialized items, enchanted weapons–arrows that aim true, swords that reflect the next move in their steel–they’re priceless, and often killed over, and as a result often end up in the wrong hands. Elite families have to gain power in a city like this somehow, and it is never via kind deeds. These elites enjoy the cover of being tech or business empires, using the glow of future prospects as a shield to hide their interests in more ancient and priceless powers. 

That said, some families are powerful in other ways. They’re called the Inclined, and they are exactly that: inclined to the ancient magics under the streets and subways of modern New York more than others. Spells can be uttered rather than studied, certain blades that act as an extended arm rather than a responsibility to be practiced. These individuals are rare, and are safer kept hidden- since often, they can become a weapon in the wrong hands as well. 

So the rich families have the luxury of paying for and hoarding these items that are either dangerous, or stolen from other families who can’t afford to come forth and claim them without disappearing. And, also, those at the top are much too fucking rich for anyone’s liking.
